Noob here in need of help

I'm not a noob to Android, but I am a noob to this whole ROM scene, or whatever you want to call it.
Basically, I wanted to make my phone able to install apps that i downloaded from my PC. Some quick research told me ok, I gotta check off an option "allow unknown sources." That option isn't there. I do some more research and I find out I gotta root my phone. Ugh, I didn't want to get into this stuff but fine, I'll do it.
This is the tutorial that I followed, to the T. briefmobile [DOT] com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
So I root my Atrix, yay, I should be able to install this neato app I got my SD card now right? No, that "allow unknown sources" option still doesn't exist. What gives?
So after scouring the internet (including a long time lurking this forum) for hours, attempting to use SuperOneClick and freeze one me 3 times, 2 factory resets, and doing bundles of research I've come to the conclusion that I'm completely lost, and scared of doing anything else that I don't know how-to and bricking my phone. So I come to you gentlemen for help. Please don't just post a link to a sticky (which I've probably already read) and send me off reading more gobbly-gook. Please, just help a bro out here.

try this one then. does the same thing as the other one just only does the sideloading.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1017373
Edit:
also on my atrix there is no option to toggle it, but i can still install apps from astro etc. so it could just not be showing up. give Astro File Manager a go to install the APK
^^^^^^^+1.
just follow that. im not sure if you will have the option to check "allowed unknown installation" but you shouldnt need that.
oh yeah and update to 1.83 if u want faster upload speeds..

[Q] Tethering on S4 Active

Is there any software that monitors our usage of tethering (snitching to AT&T for those of us without a tethering plan)? If so, what is it?
Software will prevent you from tethering without a tethering plan (or code to bypass those checks).
The only way AT&T knows if you are tethering is if they decide to investigate packet data. They can tell if the requests originated from your device or some other system (like a PC or tablet). AT&T will look deeper into your packet data if your usage raises a flag for them.
not my method, but ES file explorer will bypass checking your tethering provision and create a hotspot.
1. make sure you have WiFi off, the app won't do that automatically.
2. launch es file explorer.
3. press the menu button > tools > net manager > create a hotspot network.
4. enjoy.

I had mine rooted but this didn't work either. I don't have ATT so that might be why... I would really like to use the hotspot and tethering in the stock menu but I guess I'll have to wait till there's custom roms out...

Follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348261 then open noattched's app for his framework mod, under "Framework" I believe there is an option to enable WiFi tethering. This works on my S4 Active and was designed for use on the S4.

It didn't work with my T-Mobile SIM, it just kept saying invalid SIM and turning the hotspot back off. It's not that big of a deal, not enough for me to take the phone back anyway!
I really like the framework mod btw, so thanks for that!

1) disable "TetheringProvision" using AppQuarantine
2) Use EF File Explorer to enable a mobile hotspot
3) You still get an error message that settings stopped responding but the hotspot stays active.
I am rooted, of course.
Thank you!

[Q] Has anyone got T-Mobile wifi tethering to work?

I have tried many different apps and methods but I cannot get wifi tethering to work. I tried using xtether but it still looks like it's pulling from my 5GB tethering cap.
Has anyone figured out how to wifi tether from your mobile (non tethering) data yet?

I am extremely new to Android. My Note 4 is rooted but I don't know what TWRP is or how to use the contents of that zip file.
I'm beginning to research now but any help to expedite my learning would be much appreciated!

Working on it now. What I am wondering is, when I flash this thing in TWRP will it be an actual app that will appear in my app drawer? Or does it alter some system files to let me use the stock tethering application without limit?\
Also, I'm guessing I should disable the xtether module I have in xposed?

(SOLVED) How to remove amazon crap? (boost mobile XT1766 variant)

Edit: solved
I rooted and wiped the phone. Installed Lineage and PicoGapps and the LTE fix. Perfection. Highly recommend this delight of a phone. ?
Original post for reference:
Sorry if this has been answered but I'm using the XDA app traveling and can't seem to find it. I purchased the $50 Moto e4 boost version from Best buy and no matter what I do, I can't seem to permanently disable amazon apps.
I disable them and when I restart the device, low and behold they are back again. Is there a way to disable these apps permanently through ADB or some other jazz? Or should I just root?

Yeah, ya gotta root and delete them from the oem partition if you want them completely gone. But you should be able to disable them with adb without root.
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 "package name"
Without quotes and where package name is the actual package name.
Usually disabling them in settings/apps (show system) will disable them until you re enable them yourself.
Strangely I disable them and they re enable themselves upon boot up. Not sure why. Usually most phones you disable apps and they stay disabled. Clearly something is installed by boost that makes them reenable.
Thanks, I will try ADB.

Sorry for the Ninja double reply.
I have managed to disable via your method several apps except for three: boost zone, boost Mobile I'd and mobile installer. These are the apps causing the phone upon restart to redownload bloatware and enable disabled bloatware. When I try disabling them via adb, it simply says failure. Do disabling these require root?

Probably. It's mobile ID that changes the home screens around. It usually doesn't install anything except for home screen shortcuts. I wasnt able to disable that one without root. try using a different launcher ( I use nova). Zone let's you check for prl and profile updates, and I pay my bill in it (virgin mobile).
Update:
I followed a guide online and unlocked the boot, installed twrp and rooted the phone. Removed boosts pre installed Android version because no matter what tool I used I couldn't delete their apps. So I installed lineageOS. Having issues with 4G and can only get 3g.

Yeah that's a well documented problem on CDMA carriers. A few ppl are working on it. There is a sort of fix if you check the guides, news section.

We all do dude.(pay for lte) But LTE is fairly broken on sprint and all it's mvno's (boost, virgin, etc.)on custom roms. You can try the fix but no guarantees. Only sure way is stock. I've debloated stock, and using Xposed with gravitybox. All the customization I need. And everything works. All bloat can be removed. Most of it is /oem, that's why root apps don't get rid of it. Some things in /system are required to keep it running.
Root the device, backup the apps with Titanium Backup, Freeze the apps and see if there are any behavioral issues with them, and remove them if freezing them doesn't yield error.
As for the Data issues you are experiencing, check out this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e4/how-to/perry-real-lte-fix-custom-roms-t3752036
I plan on testing this with the rom you have on Boost Mobile as soon as it's done downloading.

Disable Updates

Qualcomm fully unlocked version here.
I have a moto e4 that is rooted using the qualcomm method with magisk. How do I go about preventing updates? Is their some apk that i can remove that will disable updates?
As another side question, is their anyway to permanently disable or restrict usb debugging on the moto e4 unlocked qualcomm variant?
Thanks,
JOhn

- disable "Motorola Update Service" via settings->apps
- no way to disable usb debugging short of taking dramatic actions
- can make access less obvious by disabling developer options

Why would you want to remove USB debugging? Just curious. You can turn it off.
You can turn off automatic system updates too (not sure how effective it is)

You can remove/rename the system app associated with the update service previously referenced. As for dramatic action to clobber ADB, Google is your friend. I am not a fan of tech lobotomies. If your kid is tech savvy he/she will easily work around any restrictions on an unlocked device.

Never said it would be an easy find. Ill advised at best. Better to remove root and relock the bootloader.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335799
This is for enabling adb debugging, I suggest doing the opposite of the lines. Make a copy of the build.prop as well as the default.prop before you do this just in case. Hope this helps
