[Q] Has anyone got T-Mobile wifi tethering to work? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried many different apps and methods but I cannot get wifi tethering to work. I tried using xtether but it still looks like it's pulling from my 5GB tethering cap.
Has anyone figured out how to wifi tether from your mobile (non tethering) data yet?

Thank you --
I am extremely new to Android. My Note 4 is rooted but I don't know what TWRP is or how to use the contents of that zip file.
I'm beginning to research now but any help to expedite my learning would be much appreciated!

Working on it now. What I am wondering is, when I flash this thing in TWRP will it be an actual app that will appear in my app drawer? Or does it alter some system files to let me use the stock tethering application without limit?\
Also, I'm guessing I should disable the xtether module I have in xposed?

Use the Wireless Tether App. I'm not sure if the Fresh ROM you have has it loaded, but you can get it here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
The 1.6 App should work; you may need to start the tether then turn off/on the mobile network to reset it.

I second this. I searched for tether options to share with my wifi only iPad. This worked instantly and extremely fast. It feels like I am on broadband with my sprint hero.
So happy I found the wifi sharing app.
It doesn't work because you don't pay for it. That is completely normal and has been the same since the day we got the phone. There is an extra charge to be allowed to tether. While there are some random work arounds, nothing is solid and none can be done without other negative side effects.
As other stated, use wifi tether (and yes, fresh 2.0d comes with v1.6).
Ummmm... Actually its really easy to make that wired tether aka mns work, you can just flash a Rom that supports it... like DarchLegend v5.
WiFi tether makes my phone all hot and bothered!

Strange, but after flashing the ROM I didn't have Wifi Tether as an app under All Programs.
I did install the apk from their Google Code site, but I only get a "Start Tethering" dialog box. Nothing beyond that.

Did you download the 1.6 apk? It's the last link here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=HTC+Donut
Also, are you sure you have Fresh 2.0d? Flipz said it's included, also says so in his Thread.
@mccsomthin Mine gets hot too so I have been turning off the Tether to let it cool down a bit.

Yes, that is the version I downloaded. Yes, I'm definitely running Flipz ROM. Menu->Settings->About Phone->Software Information shows me:
Firmware version
2.1-update2 (freshhh)
Build number
fresh rom 2.0d by flipz
I also want to point out, I don't have the Super Permissions app either. In fact, I've suspected my flash wasn't complete... but I don't know what gave me the clue.
Have you tried running wireless tether on the usb port to charge? When I tried it I couldn't maintain, some people claim they can though. Just curious if the new 2.1 ROMs are performing better in that regard.

To use MNS on DC
Hey,
I found this solution works, it was mentioned in another thread here.
1. Completely wipe your phone in recovery. (Factory/Data, Dalvik, and SD Ext)
2. Install DamageControlv1.1beta5 and reboot after the install, verify in Settings>Software that your PRI is 2.11_002.
3. Reboot to recovery, wipe everything again (although you don't have to wipe SD-Ext, but you should always wipe Data/Factory and Dalvik) and install whatever ROM you want that doesn't usually allow MNS, such as the newest version of DamageControl.
4. Once you're up and running with the ROM of your choice, check to make sure your PRI is still 2.11_002.
5. Plug phone into USB and select Internet Sharing.
I have found that sometimes you have to plug it in a couple of times for the PC to authenticate, but I think that might be a PC issue of mine and not a phone issue.
I can verify that this method does enable MNS wired tether on DC v2.5 and DC v2.6. However, I am not sure if/what other side effects might come from having the 2.11_002 PRI. Market works for me still, Sprint Apps still work too, but there may be other things that don't like this PRI. I haven't tried a PRL update on this PRI, so I can't say for sure if that will work. But if the most important thing to you is MNS on a DamageControl ROM, then this is the way to go.
*Don't flash a ROM that automatically fixes your PRI though, or else all of the trouble you're going to will be undone!

That is probably where the problem is. I'd suggest a complete wipe then re-install the ROM since it appears you were missing some parts of the ROM. You need super user permission to use this app.
The reason you aren't seeing wifi tether on fresh rom is because it's stored on /data/ which means if you did a data wipe at any point after installing it, it gets wiped. It's put there for upgrade purposes but maybe I'll put it in /system/ instead to prevent issues like this.

Yea, that's exactly what I meant about using the wrong PRI. It will also prevent you from automatically getting PRL updates. But wired tether will work.

Thanks for the clarification on that PRL update, Flipz! Hadn't tried it yet. Wasn't sure if it was really that big a deal to update from 60662 to 60663.
By the way, do you think that 2.11_002 could interfere with anything else? Seems odd that it allows me to wired tether, use data, and even use Sprint Apps, but that it interferes with PRL updates. Haha, sorry too, maybe I should do some more reading about this PRI stuff before asking questions about it!

Push the apks in his zip under the data/app folder to /data/app on your phone. But even if you did wipe, you should still have SU and autokiller, I believe he put those in /system/app...

You can flash a rom on top of itself without restoring the phone or losing any data. If you have any custom themes then you'll lose that. So if that's the case then use regaw's instructions. But otherwise, no need to restore.
Worked for me, Thanks!

rooting / tethering n00b question help please =)

I am going to be rooting my girlfriend's Verizon Droid 2 so that she can use tethering on it.
a few primary questions:
1. It looks like the best way right now is to use the instructions in this thread, right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782556
2.Her computer does not have a wireless card. Are there any ways she can tether via USB? would she need additional software?
3. Any suggestions for user friendly / stable custom roms? I love Cyanogenmod which I have running on my Sprint Evo but it doesn't appear to be available for the Droid 2 yet.
Thanks in advance for help!
1. That's the method I used to root and it worked pretty easily. Just make sure that you install the motorola drivers before ever plugging the phone into the computer. You may be able to get it to work, but I've had terrible problems with my Droid 1 drivers.
2. I've never used USB tether so I'm not completely sure
3. I'd set her up with Fission using the Fission Rom Manager + bootstrap recovery. It'd be the easiest way for her to keep up with stable releases. Other ROMs you have to load the update.zip onto the sd card and update through clockwork manually.
If you are just looking at USB Tethering, just go get EasyTether. That's the easiest way to go about it. They say after 10 days, you won't be able to view secure sites. There is a way around this...
Uninstall the app, then reinstall it again.
As for rooting, that method you posted or the Z4Root method.
As for ROM's, take your pick. I am using Fission.
thanks for the replies guys.
so no one knows of a USB tether program free for root users? That stinks!
proxoid will usb tether by way of a socks proxy. You'll have to configure a socks proxy for each app on the client you want to use...

EasyTether. It is free. Only problem is that after 10 days, you don't have https access, but like I said...
When you get to that. Uninstall the app, and reinstall it again, and it'll work again.
Thanks - Yeah I was aware of easy tether but that makes email impossible / hard she doesn't want to mess with that every so often. May be worth it to just by PDA net.
Just strange with wifi tether being available I would have thought a wired tether would be a much simpler feat.

You can install 3rd Party Apps and you can do backups of your apps and a whole lot of stuff. But if you're not into tinkering your phone then I suggest you stay away from that.
Free tethering, sideloading apps
How do you back up before you root it if you have never had a back up before?

Some apps that require root:
AdFree - disable ads
Cache Cleaner - clean up temporary and cache files
ConnectBot - terminal client for superuser
Titanium Backup - back up and restore apps + data
QuickBoot - regular reboot or reboot into recovery
Root Explorer - file management of system files
SetCPU - overclocking/underclocking
ShootMe - do screenshots
certain flashlight apps for your LED flash
rooting gives you admin read/write permission of the system so you can basically make changes to things you normally wouldnt be able to change. These include adding free tethering, backing up apps like was mentioned before, and adding other features like hopefully a third party FM radio app since the phone has the antennae inside.
its totally worth it to do, its quick and painless, and reversible if you ever need to return the phone
ConnectBot does not require root. I had installed and used it before rooting.

[Q] Tethering on S4 Active

Is there any software that monitors our usage of tethering (snitching to AT&T for those of us without a tethering plan)? If so, what is it?
Software will prevent you from tethering without a tethering plan (or code to bypass those checks).
The only way AT&T knows if you are tethering is if they decide to investigate packet data. They can tell if the requests originated from your device or some other system (like a PC or tablet). AT&T will look deeper into your packet data if your usage raises a flag for them.
not my method, but ES file explorer will bypass checking your tethering provision and create a hotspot.
1. make sure you have WiFi off, the app won't do that automatically.
2. launch es file explorer.
3. press the menu button > tools > net manager > create a hotspot network.
4. enjoy.

[Q] Tethering + Mac Address Spoofing?

Hi! I've got a Nexus 4 running CM 10.2 / Android 4.3 and I've been trying to spoof the Mac Address it sets when tethering, to no success.
The reason I'm trying to do this is that the Nintendo 3DS now uses this nifty new "Street Pass Relay" feature which checks the Access Point Mac Address to exchange high scores and other data with strangers around your zone, but with this, we can get data from strangers around the world.
The Native tethering app generates a random Mac Address every time I start it, and I've tried several options (including busybox ifconfig hw ether wlan0 xx:yy:zz:11:22:33 ) but none of the options have worked so far.
Has anyone done this before? Via an app or a script, I don't mind.
Thanks.
Wireless Tether for Root Users has MAC address spoofing as a feature as of 3.3 pre2. That version is not in the play store yet but the APK can be downloaded from the project page (Google it, I can't link to things. Or go to the #DS subreddit and find the thread about it there someone links to it in the comments). I tried getting it to work earlier but turns out the app won't work at all with a Galaxy Nexus. Others have had luck with it though.

Glad I'm not the only one going nuts trying to accomplish this exact same task for the exact same reason on the exact same device I'm at a dead end at the moment but I'll be sure and post if I figure something out - hopefully you'll do the same.
trying to do exactly the same thing but with GS3 with paranoid android and it keeps failing at creating ad-hoc...
any ideas? i kinda want those streetpasses XD
No luck so far, but if I get this to work, I'll probably repackage the Wifi Tether App into a "StreetPass Hotzone" app with pre-enabled Blocking for non-3DS devices and Mac Address cycling to get easy hits

I'm at work right now, and haven't been able to mess around d with this, but digging through the files late last night I found in the ini file holding the macaddress (One of 2 files you need to edit apparently to spoof it) there was an option to mutate the mac for tethering usage.... The system folder is /etc/wifi if anyone wants to take a closer look... If not I'll try when I get home tonight...
Hi, i'm developing an app called StreetPass Riilay, it does pretty much what you're searching but right now it's not compatible with all the devices i invite you to check it out , it's on Gbatemp and in reddit in the 3ds subreddit.

I had that exact problem. I wound up backing up my data partition using TWRP, backing up my sdcard partition to my PC, and then doing a fresh reinstall of CM using TWRP. After doing a factory reset in TWRP I then booted the phone and signed into my Google account. I then restored my data partition in TWRP and my sdcard, and everything worked after that.
