Note 4 multi window functionality for Note 3 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been searching the internet for a solution to have the Note 4 multi window functionality for my Note 3 (especially the floating window part). So far I've only found partial answers, but no real solution.
So here's my question: is it possible? If so, please point me in the right direction
Thanks!

If this is what you mean by multiwindow, flashing a Note 7 ported ROM might be the easiest way to get this, can't say about stock ROM though as I've only used stock for a week or two

Yeah it's exactly that what I mean.
Do the ported Note 7 ROMs work flawlessly on the Note 3? I want the multi window functionality, but not if let's say my camera suddenly doesn't work that good anymore.
Thanks.

Multi window is implemented in any Note3's stock rom since... always ! It's odd that you ask this question.
You did not find it or you do not know how to use it ?

Yeah I know, but I want the Note 4 multi window functionality on my Note 3 (specifically the floating window functionality). Now it's a hassle with the Pen Window Loader to get the floating windows.

You can use Skyolin Helper, it's an xposed module.

Download and flash the Phronesis' N7 port and see for yourself Stable as a rock for me and I'm quite a power user.

This is cool for people without a Galaxy Note phone, because it adds the functionality of the Pen App Launcher. But what this module does, I can already do with the stock rom of the Note 3. What the Note 4 (and the following Notes) make it better is that they've bundled all the multi window functionality into one "app" or "launcher" (don't know how to call it).
On the Note 3, you have the regular multi window functionality (with the sidebar), and the floating window functionality (which can be launched with the S Pen, or a Pen Launcher App).

I'll definitely try that if nothing elses excists, but I prefer to use the stock ROM so I'll wait a little bit more.

Everything you are describing that the Note 4 does can already be done in Note 3 but maybe you just don't know how to do it yet. Are you referring to being able to open up Facebook in normal mode and then trying make it in to a floating window? All you have to do is have the Multi-Window option "On" and then drag, with either your finger or your pencil, from either top corner drag down and it turns into a floating window.
YOU CAN ONLY DO THIS WITH SUPPORTED APPS (Chrome, Facebook, Whatsapp, etc...)
You need a custom ROM (Like Phronesis N7 that has already been mentioned) to be able to do this with ANY app
Let me know if this answers your question. I am not sure why you think the Note 4 has something extra when it has the exact same features and the Note 3 Multi-Window features.

I'm afraid you're completely wrong. What you describing the Note 3 can't do. Another extra functionality the Note 4 has is that you can create a floating app if that app is in split screen mode. You can only get a floating app with the Note 3 by using the S-Pen Launcher.

Are you saying that the floating window I just opened did not actually happen ??

Well i can't do it on my Note 3, I've tried it a couple of times because I would love for it to work. I also can't find any Youtube videos of someone doing that on their Note 3. So you must understand my scepticism.

Lol in floating window .

Well I can assure you it doesn't work. I have Android version 4.4.2 (Kitkat) if that matters.
Anyone else who can confirm what JJEgan says?

Well, it also depends on what version of stock ROM you are on. I had previously stuck with stock Lollipop 5.0 and I could easily access floating windows without the use of the S-Pen
I think if you are on Kit-Kat it's a whole different story. What version are you on?

[Q] Any chance the Nexus 10 will get the ability to run 2 apps on screen at once?

Im looking to get a new tablet, and i'm torn between the N10, and Note 10.1. The N10 blows away the Note in every way but the ability to run more than one app on screen at a time. I want to be able to view my security cameras, and still run other apps outside of that. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks!

It is a framework mod in android that allows multiple apps to run on the same screen. Google.
There's also

Looking For Tablet ROM With More Complete S-Pen Support

Hello. I have written an app that helps to improve the accuracy of the S-Pen. It works only on Note phones because Samsung has compiled some S-Pen device driver interfaces out of the tablet ROMs. It is not clear why they did this. I have asked Samsung but gotten no replies. I have confirmed that parts of the kernel code is commented out in the open source kernel code (and you can see that some of the interface files found on phones do not exist on the tablets). It seems that the tablets suffer from the same issues related to the S-Pen as do the phones and I have many people asking me to make my app work on their tablets. I cannot do so with the stock ROMs because of the missing interface files.
So I am wondering if there any non-stock ROMs in which the S-Pen is more fully supported. The missing files are located on my phone in /sys/class/sec/sec_epen/ and the two files I need are called epen_hand and epen_rotation. If anyone knows of any ROMs for the S-Pen equipped tablets that provide these interface files, I would appreciate knowing and may be able to direct some folks to using them.
Thanks
I see the two files in Slimbean ROM installed on my Note I, and the list of supported devices include few tablets - see here:
http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/supported-devices, so I suppose those files could be there as well.
Edit: no S-pen tablet on the list...

That is interesting. Isn't the 5100 also known as the Galaxy Tab 2? I did not think it came with an SPen. Please let me know if I am incorrect here. If it does not, I am surprised to see these files on your device. Are you using a stock ROM? Thanks

It sure looks like you 5100 has the necessary files. Can you answer a couple other questions:
(a) Are you using a standard ROM? If so, what version? If not, what ROM and version?
(b) Does your 5100 have a dominant hand setting for the SPen?
(c) If your 5100 is rooted, would you be willing to try my Reset SPen (free) app and tell me if it runs on your tablet? After install, simply click the app's icon and you should see a success or failure message.
Thanks
Stock Rom: JZ054K.N5100XXBMD1 over here = Both files also present.

Looking for a Couple Testers
As it appears that the Note 8 does have the necessary device driver interface files, I am looking for one or two rooted users to test my app who have the following issue with their S-Pens:
There seems to be a lack of accuracy in the point where the SPen's point actually is located and where its touch seems to be registered. This is most easily seen as a discrepancy between where the floating/hoovering pen icon (enabled on phones at least via an SPen setting) and where the actual tip of the SPen is located.
Reset Spen Pro attempts to resolve this problem. As a by-product, it may also be able to give you the following:
* A dominant hand setting (left/right) such as is found on Note phones but which seems to be missing on Note 8 tablets.
* Better support for the SPen's response to orientation changes which can improve SPen accuracy as orientation changes.
If you are interested, please PM me and we can discuss how best to do this. Thanks
Hi, I have a rooted Note 8 runing this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2287367
I installed your app and it asked me what my dominant hand was. So it seems to be working. Is there anything you want me to try? how do i know if its working properly?

Hello and thanks for your effort and your reply. What this means is that my app finds the device driver input files it needs on your device/ROM but that it does NOT find any dominant hand setting (as exists on Note phones with standard ROMs). The app tries to support ROMs which lack this setting by creating and using a setting of its own.
Basically, the app exists to try and remedy a commonly described situation whereby the accuracy of the touches of the SPen's tip degrades over time. This is particularly evident when the floating/hoovering SPen pointer is enabled. This shows where the SPen device "thinks" the SPen tip is located. Over time, many phone users notice that the location of the pointer and the location of the actual SPen tip diverge. When this happens, touches of the SPen tip often do not get registered where the user thinks they should (under the SPen's physical tip). If you do not see this situation, the app may "work" but you will see no "benefit". Some phone users have reported this. But many have shown the app to create a large improvement in the accuracy of their SPens. This remedy is performed via the epen_hand file. It seems that the Note 8 stock ROM has this file but lacks the dominant hand setting. This makes little sense to me. And so far, Samsung has not responded to my queries about the situation.
Also, some non-stock phone ROMs fail to report changes of device orientation to the SPen which uses this information to recalibrate the SPen for the new orientation. This is done via the epen_rotation file. I have not encountered this issue in stock phone ROMs but I have no idea about the Note 8. So my app makes sure that orientation changes are reported to the SPen. Again, this affects the "accuracy" of the SPen's tip - on phones particularly in non-portrait orientations. It is important to note that this function only works if the app is scheduled to run in the background.
I hope this clarifies what the app is doing.

Is there any way to get Samsung's gimmicky features on the Nexus 4?

Features like the air view, and the flip to silence or any of that.
I don't want it, but a friend of mine needs it. Also, preferably, without reducing the smoothness of vanilla.
For stock w/o root if possible but will root if needs be.
Are there apps that do this or does he have to flash something or what?
Look at Locale or Tasker in the Play Store for flip to silence. Air View will only be found in TW.

Yep. I've tried using the S-Pen on my phones and they never work. So air view would probably not work. It would probably need extensive hardware and software modding to get it to work.
Isn't air view basically just a combination of your front camera and proximity sensors?
What about the eye scrolling thing?
Or the thing where when you look away from the phone the video pauses?

Note 5 features I want on my Note 4

First one is signing PDF without downloading any other apps. Second one is using the spen when screen is off for quick notes. I would love to have these features on my note 4.
The only thing we won't get I'm sure will be here by 3rd party is a click pen. Lmao. I'm good with the note 5 plus edition or aka note 4..m
The "capture a whole Web page, even the offscreen bits" feature would be nice. So would the enhanced camera app with manual controls.
As for the "offscreen writing" feature, the fact that it only works with S Note is what kills it for me. I'd much rather use OneNote since it's what I've grown used to with my Tablet PCs over the years, and the Windows version of S-Note that I can grab here is pretty terrible by comparison. (Can't grab the Windows Store version, it just flatly refuses to let me, as if Samsung arranged it to only allow installation on their ATIV PCs.)

Thanks for replying, but, bro, have you used Note 3 with 5.0 update? This is my phone and what you seeing is a stock feature.
All I want to know is the proper way of enabling this. This is called Pop-up window. This can be enabled by a flick from corner, but 98% of the time, I end up opening Notifications. So wanted any Note 3 user to help me learning this.

First of all there are multiple Note 5 port ROMs in this forum. Some of them might be more stable & bugfree than others. Personally I haven't tried any other Note 5 port ROM than Dark Lord. Also I have never had official Note 3 Lollipop ROM in my phone so it makes comparision bit difficult too.
Based on my own experience Dard Lord ROM has been stable enough to stay in my daily use. I have noticed however occasional lagging for example in recent apps list. It has happened for me only after waking up phone from standby mode. Other than that I haven't experienced any issues. Also I don't know if lagging is caused by porting ROM from Note 5 or some of many customizations I have done like Xposed modules or if it is just common to all Samsumg Touchwiz Lollipop ROMs.
In conclusion I think Note 5 ports are quite stable and bugfree. If you decide to try one I would probably recommend to try some other than Dard Lord since Dard Lord development has stopped for now. Also it is highly recommended to read all the installation instruction carefully and read about known issue and fixes to them from thread of your choice Note 5 port ROM beforehands.

Most of the Note 5 ports are based on DarkLord's Note 3. Most of the ports simply add more custom features or fix bugs that were valid in DarkLord's port.
