I have a stock rooted Nexus 4 running Android 4.3 (JWR66V) and a custom recovery. Recently, the JWR66Y update showed up on my phone and I turned on OTA survival mode in SuperSU and proceeded to install the update. It booted into TWRP and proceeded to install up until a certain point but then it froze. I cancelled the installation and rebooted my device and I even got the "Updating Applications" indicator on the first boot. However, I checked the version and it was still on JWR66V and my device no longer shows an update available. I did the exact same thing with my Nexus 7 (2013) with the JWR66Q update and the same thing happened. Is there any way I can install an OTA update on a rooted device? Every time an update is available for one of my devices, I end up doing a full factory reset of my device to install an update. I have only been able to find things like Clean ROM and Shiny ROM and while I do appreciate the work these developers are doing for the community, I would prefer to be able to either download a fully stock and non-deodexed flashable zip for my device or find a way to install the OTA update without losing root. It would also be great if I could do so without a computer because I currently only have a Chromebook. Thank you very much.
Are you sure it was the update to the Y version? What did the file size show as in the system update notification? There have been 2 very small (1.8mb) updates which don't change the build number, maybe that's what you installed.
I am also stock rooted and have received each system update as usual, remember they take time to roll out world wide.

Now that you mention it, I'm actually not sure. However the update didn't complete either way. It froze on a step involving the boot.img (sorry I can't remember exactly what it was doing). I don't really need a fix for it anymore as I have already manually installed the updates using a friends computer but I only know how to do so by flashing the factory image and losing all of my data along the way. But just so I know for future updates, do you use OTA Survival mode or OTA Rootkeeper or anything like that or do you simply install the update as you would on a non-rooted device? Thanks for your reply.

The root isn't the problem. The custom recovery is. You need to be on stock recovery for the update.

Can I fastboot flash the stock recovery after I've already flashed a custom recovery and still have root? And if the answer to that is "yes" will I still be rooted after the next OTA update?
I am having the same problem. Both my nexus 4 and 7 recieved an update (1.8MB) but it seems that i cannot get the update to install. Both devices were rooted using the Nexus Root Tool kit.
When i got the update the devices booted in recovery mode with TWRP. Do not know what to do. I saw no update in the baseband or build number.
I am running stock android.
Please advise
I'm using clean slate rom.. but i got OTA update... I have attached the screenshot... can i install it?.. will it brick? or do I have to wait for new build cleanslate..

hmmmm okay guys.. thanks for the info... when we will be getting atleast android 5.1!!
Doesn't look like we're going to get 5.1, the update schedule has us going straight to Marshmallow in early 2016
I am on 1.88.707.1 and have rooted my M9+ and have TWRP 2.8.7.0 recovery installed with S-ON (I installed Sunshine and it passed the tests and S-off can be done but I haven't.)
I also got this update notification, and downloaded it. But now, after the first reboot, it boots into TWRP and I have no clue how to apply this update.
Is there a way I can flash (only) stock recovery? How do I go about it? Can someone please help?

You can't do an OTA update with a custom recovery. Root is irrelevant.

So if i root my phone without the custom recovery im stil able to get OTA-s
Good day,
I'm using a GRA-UL10 on C185B320 (Middle East) and an OTA came up for B361 just the other day and it's pretty persistent on having me to update. The problem is it says that I must not be rooted (I am using sysless root) and I also have TWRP installed. I don't know what happens if I proceed with the update but I'm scared that I might get a bootloop. Is there a way to install this OTA safely?
Unroot and flash stock recovery with fastboot. Then update and flash TWRP again and root it.

It seems you are using C185B320 while rooted. You unroot and then factory reset to get fresh C185B320 Operating System or better if you still have your downloaded update of C185B320, re-install it and then get your OTA C185B361 before re-installing your apps (assuming back up has been done).
I have installed the OTA and it's working fine; only the mini screen isn't functioning, for you not to be surprised when you update this OTA. Hope this will help.
After a looong time my m9+ recieved marshmallow update just now. When i tap the install, it goes to TWRP and nothing happens further. What am i supposed to do?
Should i unroot my phone? Or is there any files i can download to get the marshmallows?

You have to restore stock B29 recovery. You can't accept an OTA with TWRP.

It still fails. After restarting device it boots into installing screen with miFavor logo instead of TWRP. The processing bar runs to about 24% then stops to reboot. I notice that the log at bottom screen say mismatch. And I got message system update package does not match the phone.

You have to install it in stock recovery. Put it on your FAT32 sdcard and then in stock recovery select "Apply update from sdcard".

I got following message at bottom left of screen
Supported API: 3
Sorry, you can't sd upgrade
I think you have to enable OEM unlock in developer options, first. Then, you can install B29 via SDCard.

Thanks. I forgot to unzip the file and put it in the root of sd card and I have done what you said too. It is running installation now.
I'm failing now? I went from ZAD v.3 back to stock B29 (I have an unlocked bootloader). I do have the MiFavor recovery (not TWRP)
I got the notification there was an upgrade, it took 6 hours to download... but the update "failed". I tried applying the update via SD card, but I get about 32% in and says "Update failed"......It also lists "Status 8" and "system partition has unexpected contents".
Sounds like y'all are having a hell of a time between the slow OTA speeds and then getting it to actually flash.
So I think I'll hold off for now. Hopefully we can get some TWRP-flashable zips soon enough... I think DrakenFX is already busy with all that
You guys are making this way too complicated.
The full B29 firmware will flash just fine with twrp.
Only OTA *updates* require the stock recovery. The difference is the update patches existing files while the full firmware contains full partition images.
Be aware if you download the full b29 firmware from zte, it will also replace your recovery and bootloader. You won't be able to flash recovery from the bootloader/fastboot screen then. Also, it wipes all your data.
DrakenFX put out a modified version of the full firmware file which doesn't modify the bootloader. I believe it also leaves the recovery intact.
After flashing official A2017U B29 firmware from ZTE the signal network service is lost. I ignore this and continue to upgrade to Nougat successfully and I get lost signal. I notice that Dual Sim Setting is working. Does official firmware overwrite original chinese baseband/bootstack? Can someone please upload chinese baseband/bootstack A2017 please?

No more complicated than it's turned out to be....
I followed DrakenFX's guide to B29 stock... The Nougat OTA downloaded, in 6 hours, but failed. So, I tried the SD card method, and it also failed at 32%.
Not sure what else I can do? Just wait for DrakenFX to make ZAD v.4 is my plan for now since I already wasted about 11 hours trying to upgrade today, and another 3 restoring back 6.0.1 and all my apps.

No problem upgrading using the OTA on an sdcard here. Flashed the draken stock_system zip, then fastboot flashed the B29 stock recovery. Reboot to recovery (which is now stock) and update from sd card. If you've messed with other partitions, you may need to flash more B29 .img's.
