Functional Skype on Nougat Stock ROM? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Has anyone of you succeeded to get Skype properly working on Nougat, with the stock ROM?
So far I managed to install it, either via the AptoideTV application (itself downloaded via the browser in EZ file explorer) or by downloading the APK file. The version from Aptoide TV is functional but doesn't show any video call button, only voice call, in both directions (in and out calls).
It can however access a webcam to take a new picture (I've installed Open Camera for that purpose).
I'll keep you updated if I have any update on that purpose.

Go to settings > app , look for Skype app, click on it and post the whole package name.
I don't have stock Nougat but full Android and Skype work well, I also use the following app to route calls and video calls audio output to HDMI port. Is a must have:

Version 6.15.0.1162 / com.skype.raider
Similar situation with Version 7.32.99.490 / com.skype.polaris and 7.24.0.255 / com.skype.raider

This issue with Stock is probably due to the fact that it uses the Leanback verison of the App, and thus deactivite the camera-related features.

I'm also having some issues with Skype on Nougat full Android (ROM by @zulu99 on http://www.videomap.it/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1646 ), which version of Skype are you using?

Up.
Is Skype really fully functional in your case on Full Android? If so, could you share your setup?
Thanks

I search recently for a working Video call App on my shield. After the Nougat / android 7 update, I try Skype Lite and WhatsApp.
The current beta of WhatsApp was working great. But the video crashed after a period of time.
In the Skype Lite apk, I was able to upload Feedback to Microsoft. If more people would do this ms could think about to be the first, full and stable video messenger for the living room.
Just sideload the newest apk from here: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/skype/...ite-1-0-0-27544-release-android-apk-download/ and tab on the Feedback area.

I don't have experience with Skype Lite, but Microsoft voluntary stopped to support Skype on (smart) TV last year.
Thus, they will not be first, they were already there, and alternatives exist.

Did you think they mean not just only smart TVs. In the last year Android TV was not really on the market. Perhaps they mean just smart TVs with own build os's like Samsung and All the other did before they use Android. Create an Android OS App is much easyer than do it for many many different os's from the different TV companys.
Can you tell me the working alternatives? I try many different Video call messengers without success.

My alternative was to move to Marshmallow StockRestyle ROM from @zulu99, check this post for more details on the comparison.
This ROM is not available on XDA anymore, but Google will help you find your way.
I'm now using a full Android Nougat ROM, from @zulu99 too, but Skype video calls aren't working (yet) and I cannot downgrade to Marshmallow. Thus, for the moment, if Skype is a must I'd recommend to use the Marshmallow StockRestyle ROM (and to check my ROMs comparison post). Also, note that Marshmallow StockRestyle ROM can only be installed on 2015 models, not on 2017 ones!
I hope that help.

Did you try Skype-lite: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/skype/skype-lite/
Greetings by Idijt

Hello,
Skype-Lite wasn't working.
I moved back to Marshmallow StockRestyle, where Skype 6.15 was working, but now it's also unsupported (Skype now requires a Windows account).
Thus, my updated question: has anyone been successful with the new version of Skype release this summer (version 8.xx)?

No More jetVD-YouTube Downloader

Looks like they took jetVD off the Android Market. I just installed a new rom and didn't backup that app. If anybody has the latest v0.9.8 apk can you please please pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase upload.
There are more places to look for app's than just the Market. I'll see if I can find something.
Not sure what version it is, or if it is infected in any way shape or form, but here is a working download:
http://www.4shared.com/file/vbUs9Glk/jetVD.html
Edit: version 0.9.4.
works okay for me
Some ROMS have problems with missing apps from the market. It has to do with the build.prop file. One way to get these apps is to use appbrain and fast web installer to send it to your phone. The app still exists: http://www.appbrain.com/search?q=jetvd
No apps found for "jetvd"
I am getting irritated by Google removing the apps that grab youtube videos.
Anyone has the latest version of apk and would you share it please?
EDIT: I finally managed to grab it from the 4shared link, tried like 10 times and it finally worked. Although it isn't the latest version (cannot choose where to save the videos).
Download Best tube off the market is free and its a youtube downloader and I have found every app that I've looked for....
Aren't there plenty of other apps that do the same thing?

interesting. they seem to be developing even though they were yanked off of the market. however i cant read any of the links off of their twitter feed. on the computer or the phone.
version 0.9.13 is not working but the version attached to the first post is working fine
Version 1.0.1 will be out soon. I saw the release notes on their site. It will feature a new UI. We can view video comments and the option to view related videos as well as videos upload by the user.
I have 0.9.7 on my phone, from the Market, back when it was still there and it works 100% still.
1.0.1 is on the market!!
Sorry if this is late and after the fact...
JetVD is available on the market, but the lite version on the market will not allow you to download videos and save them. People in the comments section have advised to go to their website at jetvd.com and download it straight from there (using your mobile device). The Full version is free there, and will allow you to save your videos.
Is there a new jetvd or any other app that converts youtube videos to mp3?
I've been using TubeMate for a year or so, but it's not on the Market. Get it for free at m.tubemate.net.

Yahoo Messenger with Video Chat

I know there have been a few threads on video chat and I apologize for making a new one; however I thought my post may get lost if I tried to post in older threads. Below are the APKs for both yahoo messenger and the video add on. I've tested this on my 101 and it works well. I did find out that if you have not updated to the latest firmware it does not work well. Enjoy!

Video Add On

If I find that an update is needed I will add the links as needed.
Does not work for me. Neither these files nor the files from the market. Video /Audio addon crashes always on the A 70.
Are u on the new firmware?

2.0.71 of course. Driver seemed to suck all CPU power...
Seems to work just fine, but is one heavy app. Between the chat and the plugin it is over 20mbs of space. Not sure how it affects battery life...
You can also download these from the market if you have it installed. I tested this today and it is the best so far. Fring and Tango still have a lot of bugs. The new Skype with Video is going to be Verizon only.. at least for this year. There is one more that just came out that might be better than Yahoo and that is ooVoo. It is in beta, but you can download it now from the market. I haven't tested it yet, but it sounds promising.
So if you have Archos.. best video chat so far I think is Yahoo and ooVoo.

Install latest youtube on FireOS 4.5.3 and be able to login WITHOUT ROOT(!!!)

I am running FireOS 4.5.3 on Fire HDX 7" and it is not (and never has been) rooted.
Settings > Applications > Apps from unknown sources is On
I have the file manager with zip support installed.
Uninstall any versions of the 5 apks mentioned below.
Download this zip file:
https://mega.co.nz/#!OItCnSSA!VqBqlbwUa3h5VR0bmIXmRVBq4UeYo5bhBmzmflml3Vk
Open or extract it and install the apks in this order:
account manager 4.0.3
framework 4.0.4
play services 7.3.29
playstore 4.3.10
youtube 10.16.53
Reboot the tablet.
Go to youtube and you should get that normal google account login screen.
Login and presto! There you have it latest youtube apk with sign in ability.
Hasn't crashed on me (yet), but play store does not work (I've tried a few versions).
Yes I am aware of that youtube app with the blue icon in the amazon app store but I wasn't satisfied with it.
I haven't tried any other google apps yet with this combo.
I really hope this works for others. I just spent the last 5-6 hours figuring this out and it's now nearly 2am.
works for me
Youtube works.
Not for playstore gmail.
Oh that's cool I'm glad it's worked for others.
I just wanted to give something back to this forum cause I've gone to it so many times myself.
Found a gmail apk that works
Don't want to burst your bubble, but someone already figured out how to get YouTube to work on unrooted devices (along with other Google apps): http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/themes-apps/how-to-install-gapps-root-t2954372

Chrome should work regardless of framework (at least it did last time I tried). If not try Opera. Same underlying engine (Chromium) with a different skin.

That command is for Google+ to work. It's not needed if you don't use G+. But at least you provided newer versions.
Is it just me, or does doing this break other apps? Skype won't work properly (no contacts or message history), TuneIn radio won't even get past the initial screen. Why is this happening? Sorry I'm new to this stuff.
I should add that uninstalling these packages then causes everything to work again, so it does seem to be causing it.

Installing Google framework/services/store/etc on Fire OS is always a crap shoot as Amazon has its own set of conflicting services. Many get it to work (at least partially) while others experience problems. Installing framework/services on an unrooted device presents additional challenges....but also adds a layer of safety as you can typically install/experiment/uninstall without serious consequences. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your current situation; responding to "why is this happening?". You'll probably get it to work eventually with help from others.
That makes sense. I did manage to get Skype 5.1 working but anything after that breaks. Must have added a new feature since then that gets into that services conflict you mention. No luck with TuneIn, though I found an alternative for that.

If your family is looking for unfettered access to the play store you should definitely look for another device. It will be awhile before alternative roms become available to newer Kindles and most play store implementations are hacks at best. While the hardware is wonderful you really have to be wed to the Amazon ecosystem to truly appreciate the device (or be fortunate enough to have an 'older' model that can be rooted/unlocked and run a Google friendly rom).

If you are comfortable with 1moble (one of my favorite 'alternative' marketplaces) then many of the shortcomings inherent with the Amazon store can be mitigated. Chrome (more often Gmail) can get fussy without google services/framework. Opera is a nice alternative that utilizes the same core engine as Chrome. Gmail is a little tougher to directly emulate; plenty of alternatives if the Gmail app coughs up a fur ball (I happen to like Aquamail). You really don't need root but if you choose to do so Xposed framework adds a few nice touches that can further tame an HDX without compromising native functionality.
Hope it works out for you folks.
You can run Google services framework without root. People have been having issues with the newer builds however. If it does not work for you, try build version 7.0.99.

That will work for now (thanks @lekofraggle for the tip) but be aware Google is quickly adapting apps to leverage capabilities introduced in newer builds of services framework. For now that appears confined to Maps and Google Now (eg: card features) and primarly targets Lollipop.
You are welcome. I know about the impending issue with Google play services. Hopefully they fix the issues soon. Google maps works for now but complains.

Is anyone able to use the DirecTV app on the Shield Android TV?

Hey guys. Does anyone have a working apk of the DirecTV app for the Nvidia Shield Android TV?
It looks like it has HDMI protection and just fails to stream. Has anyone been able to remove the protection on the .smali file that has it?
What is the exact error that you are receiving? I use to be able sideload a Direct TV apk for either the phone or the tablet but now they have stop working. When it worked fine it was amazing. I was able to watch my subscribed premiums. I think we need to incentivize developers to find a means of allowing functionality through our Nvidia Shield. I will pledge a 300 bounty for the first person that finds a work around. There are many gifted people on this forum and as a whole we can solve this issue.
Any luck with this?
Not sure if it's an HDMI block because if you notice certain channels do work (local NBC works for me as well as ESPN channels). I'm inclined to think the device isn't giving the proper location access to the app thus forcing the error for most channels. Just my 2 cents.
I experimented with a custom ROM yesterday and the DIRECTV app worked great on it. I don't think the app has an HDMI block, I think it's more that the stock rom restricts the necessary permissions or location requests.
What android tv box are you using? Are you using the latest directv version (phone or tablet)? What custom ROM you use?
I have a shield TV and I'm using zulu99's full android marshmellow firmware. There isn't any controller support so you'll have to pair with a mouse/keyboard but pretty much all apps work on it.
Hey guys, I am in the same situation. I have found two other threads on the issue. It is definitely not an HDMI issue or a WiFi issue. Someone has tried to fool the app on what device it's on and it worked but it was too much work. There must be a simpler way to achieve this.

DirecTV now
Hi, DirecTV Now app is not in my Google play store ! I'm using Nvidia shield TV. Any reason why it's not showing up ..
Thanks
I would love to use the DirecTV Now app on the nVidia Shield too. I extracted the APK from the app I installed on my Pixel XL, and loaded it on the Shield, but I get the following error:
failed to connect to aeg-umsgw.quickplay.com/23.101.201.149 (port443) after 10000ms
Man, life would be good if they'd release this app for the Shield.
Ok, so I was able to extract the Fire TV .apk file and sideload onto my Nvidia Shield TV. I was able to open it and navigate using the standard Shield remote. The only issue I am having is playing live TV content. Sometimes it loaded fine and other times it gives me an error and telling me to Refresh the content. Seems to be very buggy for Android TV. Here is a link to the extracted .apk file. I would like to see what you guys get trying this out.

It seems there is some confusion and contusion between the DirecTV apps. The hot new toppic is about the DirecTV NOW service. I ran the search on APKmirror and it seems what you are talking about is the older app for DirecTV satellite service customers.
http://www.apkmirror.com/?s=Directv&post_type=app_release&searchtype=apk
I am referring to the DirecTV app that is for satellite customers, NOT the Now app.
I was able to download the tablet version of the DirecTV app and use it on my Nexus Player running stock 7.1.1 system, but you have to use a mouse; the app is designed for touch input and while you can sort of use the remote, there are a bunch of things you cannot press without using a mouse. Still hoping for some official support at.. using a mouse isn't ideal. Here is the latest apk file: updated 11/24/2016 v. 4.9.010
http://www.filedropper.com/dtv
Resurrecting this old thread. Do you still use the directv app on your shield and is it working ok? Do you have a more recent apk you can share? For anyone reading this I am looking for the DirecTV app NOT the DirecTV Now app. Thank you!

I noticed the latest update with November Security Patch is supposed to have Google Assistant now. I recently bought an nVidia Shield TV device which also has Google Assistant (well was the first device to get it anyway) and it works flawlessly on that device (which currently runs 7.1.2).
I'll have to hookup my NP tonight and update it to see how it works. Mine is running Oreo but I disconnected it when I picked up the Shield TV last weekend. My NP is fully stock, and I did read that GA was a little quirky with the Nexus remote and it was suggested to use your mobile device for a better experience with it. Anyway, point is, I'll hook mine up tonight, update it and check it out. Let you know how it goes [emoji6]
