Proximity sensor strange behaviour - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I recently replaced my screen with one off ebay. So far, so good. Screen looks great and I'm happy to have my phone back after a month with a cheap zte blade. However I make my first call, screen stays on as usual, put the phone up to my ear, screen turns off, I go to put it on speaker and the screen stays off. Ok, I guess there's some dust in the proximity sensor. I make another call, and the screen stays on until I put it up to my ear, so it seems it's working again. Once more, I go to end the call but the screen stays off again. Weird, I thought it was working. So I download sensors test app. When I open the app, it shows the sensor reading far. When I put my hand up to the sensor, it reads near. When I take my hand away, it remains reading near. If I turn my phone in the side it goes back to reading far. Put my hand up to it and it reads near again, and sticks when I take my hand away. If I switch apps and come back it reads far again.
I was on 7.1.1 beta, so I downloaded Feb 7.1.1 and the problem is still there. I have limited monthly data so was hoping somebody may have some ideas before I download another factory image. I have already tried proximity sensor fix app.
Thanks

My phone does that. I thought it was normal behavior. You can download an app that keeps the screen on for whatever apps you choose. The one I use is called Screen Manager Pro but there are others that do the same thing.

No screen protector right? Have a look at thread and see if it may pertain to you. Particularly the part about the missing grommet over the proximity sensor.

OK, I am missing the grommet and unfortunately threw away the old screen already

I'm not sure how you can make one. It seems the guy in that thread didn't have much luck. See if an official repair center is near you and if they are maybe they would sell you a grommet? Or repair it for you worst case. I bet they are aware of how critical that piece is.

Well, the bad news is, I live in a very small rural area so no repair centre nearby. However, the good news is, since I live in a very small rural area, I went to the rubbish dump and asked about the collection from my street. The bags from my house were right near the entrance with no other trash on top of them! I retrieved the old screen, went home and cleaned up and installed the grommet and I am back in business!
I never thought I would be so happy to trawl through a garbage dump but here we are. Thanks for pointing out what the problem was!

You retrieved the grommet from your city dump. That is pretty legendary!

Hi Guys,
I bought one of these and as "good" as it may seem, just warning you off, or at least giving you notice.
The magnet affects the phone and operates the screen by it's self.
Well, that's a little miss leading. What it does is I think, is tell the phone that you have opened the slide.
So depending on your settings, whenever you attach the phone it will either unlock it, open the dialer, read your sms messages or start pressing the soft keys.
Apart from the ridiculously poor delivery (1st class postage arrive 7 days after shipping. A parcel from US came quicker" ) that I don't know whether to blame on them or Royal Mail, I must of got the one adapter with no bloody adhesive on the back! Industrial sticky tape needed, that's if I decide I can live with the unlocking!
*mods* Really sorry, I didn't notice the "accessories" thread. I only hang out in this one, I've only just noticed it.
Sorry to hear you are not very happy with this, i've had one for a while and i reckon its one of the best i've had. as well as being small and discreet the magnet holds the pda even when driving down dirt tracks and over speed bumps.
The magnet does occasionally set off the quick list but it has already been mentioned on this forum that it is activated by magnet it just depends where you put the adapter
i dont know about you guys but im keeping magnets well away from my device.

Do you have a Dual then? Where is your strip to attached the magnet?
After a bit of experimentation, if you place the strip horizontal just underneath the camera (in the center) then the magnet wont set off the phone!
Now I've fixed it with my own tape I'm really happy with it!
i've got mine right in the middle, covering the orange logo, after playi g with it a bit last night it seems to depend a lot on how quickly you move the dual towards the magnet and whether you go staraight towards it or come in from an angle. one thing i havent tried is disabling the quick menu, will give it a go later as i never use it anyway

HELP> Flashed Desire Rom, now screen wont light up

I have a serious problem. I noticed a bug in the Desire alphas where sometimes when the backlight went off during a call it would not come back on when the i took the phone away from my face. It always came back on eventually.
Ok now yesterday I flash alpha 8 and it worked fine. Now all of a sudden I reboot my phone bc the battery dies and the backlight won't come on at all! I know the phone is on because the haptic feedback and cap buttons are on and if I leave it on I can tell it's getting notifications.
How am I supposed to fix this?! I can't even see anything to get into recovery! My phone is unusable.
Find out every step to do a backup in recovery... see if that works

Load into bootloader
Press power button once and wait about 20 seconds
press volume down once then hit power button once
Wait about a minute and move the trackball down slowly 3 time and press it
Scroll it down once and press it four times

Unless your screen is broken you can always boot into recovery.
Take out the battery, then put it back in.
Hold the trackball down as you power on, this will boot you into fast boot.
Select bootloader, then select recovery. and bam your in recovery and can reflash.
I can get my phone into recovery. When I adb in i can push the phone into recovery, then when i hit adb devices it shows my phone and says recovery.
the problem is the backlight is not on even when i am in recovery. i would say the screen broke, but it seemed like a software problem, because it was just slow to come back on. It still always came back on. then I left it in my car chargine and it never came on again. The phone seems to be working fine though.
Kind of off topic, but did your call screen do this before flashing to Desire at all? Did you recently install a screen protector? I had problems with the PhantomSkinz screen protector making the proximity sensor less sensitive and behaved exactly how you're describing...as soon as I took it off it started working again. I'm now using a dcmugen88 screen protector and it works great.
interesting. i have one of those bodyglove or whatever protectors. best buy glued it onto my lcd. i suppose it could have started around that time. but would the proximity sensor still be deactivating the lcd even when its booting up or in recovery?
Oh, I must have overlooked that. The screen protector wouldn't cause any issues on startup or in recovery... guess it must be the rom then.
well, figured it out.
warning to n1 users: watch that lcd screen under the glass. its not nearly as sturdy as the glass cover.
the lcd/digitizer screen under my glass got cracked and stopped working. no drop, no warning, no funny colors. htc does not cover this in the warranty no matter how good the actual phones condition is.
i almost didnt get another n1, a phone thats inherantly weak (i found dozens of similar reports over the web) is not exactly a good case for a system with no insurance, no store to walk into, and very unhelpful support. they try to be very nice, but the rep i talked to couldnt even tell me whats covered and not. he just said let us charge 500 bucks to your card and we will ship a replacement, then decide if we think you have to buy it once we get your old phone. i demanded to talk to someone who did know. his manager denied hearing about lcd screen problems... after the original rep said he and htc knew this was a common problem. google didnt even return my email when i first contacted them saying my backlight was broken.
so again, be careful and get a good case.

[Q] Black screen of death, then too bright with lines, now normal??

Hello,
I got the Galaxy S4 yesterday morning. Today around 9pm the screen was completely black. I could hear sounds and the buttons would light up but nothing worked. I pulled the battery and sim card as suggested via google search and still nothing. I got home and the screen came back on but it was really super bright with horizontal lines that were slightly shifted in one spot on top of each other. I plugged my usb from the charger into it a few times and eventually got a battery charging logo to come up. Had to do that a few more times before I got the screen back up. Now the screen appears normal but I'm scared that something happened to it. Either the screen is going to die soon or maybe it somehow over heated and that is why the screen was acting wierd. I just hope that since it seems normal now that I can get it replaced in store even though I can't duplicate the symptoms.
I'm curious as to what your take is on what's wrong with my phone? It had at least 75% charge before it started acting crazy. I don't want to keep it thinking it's fine and then after 15 days it goes out again and I'm stuck waiting for a repair to be shipped back to me.
Thanks
I just did a live chat with a Samsung Tech guy. He says it's because I installed an app or had a sd card inserted. He told me to uninstall Facebook and any ebook reading Apps and see if that fixes the problem. Do they think people fall for this? So incredible stupid if that's how they train their techs.
I was able to replicate the symptoms again. I bought the s view cover and when installing it had to press a little hard on the edges to snap into place. The screen went black again and did the same thing. Plugging to power then restarting fixed it. I found out that when I press the top right corner around where the time is, the screen flickers black and looks like I wants to cut out. Is there a sensor or digitizer located at that spot. If it's an issue when putting on a case, I see this is going to not bode well for the life of this phone. I went back to the dealer today and she gave me the number and location of a local samsung repair center. I'll have to give them a call tomorrow I suppose. Just be careful of any pressure being applied to the screen, even though mine has been acting up on it's own.
Just checked it now and it went totally black again and is not coming on. I've only had it a few days so not even enough time to load much stuff on it or customize it. I'm with Wind Mobile in Canada. It's getting boxed up and taken to the store asap tomorrow.

[Q] Need help with screen

Ok so basically I love the g2, but here is my problem, bare with me on this haha, BTW its completely stock n everything as its my 1st Android phone so didn't want to mess with it. So basically I broke my phone screen in January, bought new screen, followed a YouTube tutorial, replaced LCD+touchscreen, no issues super happy, had the odd issue where if I woke screen, would only be on for a second n then go back to sleep, but then upgraded to KitKat through computer software update, still nothing wrong, upgrade fixed the issue with the knock to wake, and then my worst day, smashed the screen again! On good Friday, ok I thought I'll just replace screen again, so I did, but when I put new screen on and tested it, all was well, until I made a phone call, the instant moment I press green call button, screen goes blank and won't come on no matter what, power button don't bring it back on or end the call, but I can hear the other person and they can hear me, had to turn phone completely n back on to be able to use it again, so I though hmmm dodgey screen, but just to be sure it wasn't the phone I put damaged screen back on, and the issue didn't appear, stayed lit up while in my hand, went off next to my ear, back on whole in hand, so I took it to local phone repair shop because I couldn't be bothered going through the hasstle getting refunds etc, they replaced screen, I went and tested it before paying them, guess what, same problem, so what exactly is going on? Has KitKat made the phone not work with a new screen other than the one I upgraded it with? I'm seriously confused and need some bodies help urgently my model is an unlocked lg g2 d802 16gb now I turned it on last week before I took it to be repaired, and it says I have software updates but I didn't bother installing them, is there a chance these could be related to my issue and possibly fix them? Its driving me nuts tbh
Chris
Hey Chris. It seems like your proximity sensor is messed up. I think the new screen you got yourself is worse quality or your damaged the proximity sensor when installing the screen.
Edit:
Please go into your phone app (where you call people) and type the following
3845#*802#
Then go into: HW Device Test and then ALC proximity test. Try testing your proximity sensor with your hand. It should change from far to near when your hand is about 2 inches from your phone. The proximity sensor is located next to the camera.

Ok thank you I will try that, I also thought a damaged sensor but when I put damaged screen back on after having the issue with my new screen it worked just fine, no blank screen when making a call, I retested it before I left it at phone repair shop, still was fine, then picked it up with a new screen and issue came back, I don't get why its been like this, I'm thinking bad quality screen and maybe try scratching the sensor area of the new screen to allow more light in? It may be to dark for it, what exactly do I do if it works fine when using that code, try another screen?
Chris
I doubt it will work when you use that method. It's just to make sure that it's the proximity sensor that's the problem and not some loose connection. And yes, a new screen would be your best bet.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ok I won't try that method then lol, what if it doesn't work when I use that code, as I said I didn't have the issue with the damaged screen which I tested after having the issue with the replacement screen I'd purchased, so how do I know its not just the screen not allowing the sensor to see? Is there anyway I can reset the sensor to relearn maybe?
Chris
If you follow my steps, nothing bad will happen. It's just a way of troubleshooting the proximity sensor. I still think you should do it.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ok I've spoken to phone repair shop and they agree it worth a try to see if its the screen or not, I'll let you know on Saturday after I've been and tested it
Chris
I just had this exact same issue.Turns out the inside of the screen was just dirty. I opened it up and took a q-tip to the inside of the screen and it worked perfectly after that. Also check the readings of the light sensor, as it is right next to the proximity sensor, if the screen is the problem it will likely have low readings as well.
Great I'm glad somebody else has encountered this issue, its been driving me nuts lol ok so I dial in the code that's been mentioned and what are the labels in the menu for the proximity and light sensors? I'm thinking its just a crap screen as the broken 1 worked fine after I put it back on after testing new screen, and I reckon the screen the repair shop has used is also ****e quality, but I just want to cancel it all out as I don't have the phone to hand to inspect as they still have it lol is there a picture somebody can post up to show what to not cover when replacing the screen and applying adhesive tape etc? Just so I can show them to make sure they have done it all properly.
Chris
Ok so just to update the problem, I went to the phone shop today, did the test, it was showing near all the time, but the light sensor reading was quite high, 166 or something, but I then tried squeezing the screen, index finger on back and thumb on front, gently squeezed it, and proximity sensor started showing far, and near as I moved my hand over it, but after few seconds, went back to showing near constantly, so I think its the screen not been seated, told the shop to take screen off, give it a good clean and reseat it. This sound good to you guys?
Chris
Anyone?
Bump! I'm only wanting a little extra advice so I don't end up paying more money out for another screen when it could possibly be proximity sensor? I think it was just the screen not seated properly, anybody have an idea or something else to either assure my choice or point me in another direction?
Chris

Simple fix for black screen

Hello,
after a fall from the couch my zte axon 7 had the problem that the screen stayed dark / black. Otherwise it worked fine. After speaking to a local support mechanic I got this simple fix:
Just press the back and the front with a bit of pressure together. Do that left of the volume button. Now the screen should be working again.
In my case that was the solution. I share it here for visibility.
Have a great day!

probably the worst place for visibility. This is the Q&A section, people ask things here so it'll be buried in a matter of hours
I'm not sure where it should be posted, perhaps a moderator could help and turn it into a sticky somewhere if the information is not already there.
FWIW it is the same method I used to cure my half black screen, which appears to a fairly common affliction .
The connector comes partially apart and this "cure" is considerably easier, if successful, than the more obvious phone disassembly route.

Thank you. Same thing happened to me, that was the fix. I'd love to know what the heck it does by putting pressure on it. I should re-watch the tear down of the phone to see if something comes to mind, but it's weird :silly:
Anyway, once again, thank you! You saved my life.

not weird, the screen connector is right there lmao
It just pops off halfway so it's very normal to see axon7's with half of the screen being a static mess while the other half works fine
