From 6.0.1 Marshmallow to 7.0 Nougat - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I am on the SM-G935T using stock 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Two days ago I received an OTA notification to update to 7.0 Nougat. Given a lot of the recent problems users are reporting regarding charging and password memory issues, I've decided that I don't want to update at this time. That being said, I have two questions.
1. I downloaded Package Disabler pro in hopes of disabling the notification. I followed all instructions in the disabling thread to the letter with no luck. Several other users mentioned that it didn't work for them either. Without rooting, is there anything I can do to remove this notification permanently? As I've already said, I followed all directions and even tried disabling the update via settings to no avail.
2. While I am using stock 6.0.1, I'm completely happy with it. I don't like using custom ROMS regardless of how nice they are, because I prefer to modify my stock ROMS (generally rooted) to suit my needs. I have Nova Launcher Prime installed and have disabled the OS versions of Touch Wiz, the Samsung keyboard, Gmail, Email, and Messages in favor of my favorite third party applications, which all run flawlessly. I have also manually tweaked the permissions for almost every user app on my phone.
If I go ahead with the update, will it cause all of my settings and disabled apps to revert back to the Samsung versions, or will it simply update, without messing with all the work I've currently put into the phone already? I realize that I could simply root the phone and use Titanium to disable FW updates, but I do not want to root unless absolutely necessary.
As always, any help with these two questions will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

If you update from 6.to 7, it will enable and replace pretty much everything you have disabled now.
Some of your personalizations may carry over, but anything that is stock from Google, Samsung and T-mobile will update.
You can export your current disabled list from Package disabler, so you have a reference point if / when you upgrade.

Thank you. Do you happen to know if there is any way to disable the notification via Package Disabler? Everything I've read is for disabling a service on an older version that has since been changed.

Maybe not in Package Disabler, but try going into your settings, Applications, Application Manager.
In there, look on the upper right side for More. Press that, then Show System Apps.
Go down and hopefully you'll see Software Update. A little further down, there is System Updates.
Try Force Stopping those, and see if the notifications go away.

Let us know if that worked or not. My Edge is with Verizon, so i haven't gotten the update or notifications.
But, when it does finally get released, I will probably hold off for a few days. So it would be good to know if I will be able to kill the notifications or not.

Unfortunately, all of my attempts to disable the notification have failed. I even used Package Disabler to access system packages only, but even with system updates turned off, the notification regarding its availability still remain.

No, bro. Thank you for the help. I can tell you that I went ahead and upgraded today (on accident, due to that damn pop-up notification), and I've experienced none of the issues other uses have expressed. All of my WiFi passwords seem to have been remembered, I only had to re-tweak a few settings, and it actually feels a little more responsive.
I'm not a huge fan of the new notification and settings screens though. It's much more streamlined and condensed, but that's just a matter of preference on my end. Other users seem to love it.

Us Verizon folks finally got your Nougat update today (about time!), and I didnt have any issues either.
It does take a little getting used too, but can see a definitive improvement all around.

And I was wrong about packages staying disabled.
This is probably the first major system upgrade I've done where it didn't Reenable all my programs I had disabled.

Let's try and solve the Honor / Huawei 'missing notification' problem

I suspect most of us have seen the issue with 'missing notifications' on Honor / Huawei devices. When you add an app to the protected apps list, make sure the various battery and startup optimisations are disabled, do everything you can... still the system seems to shut the app down and notifications don't happen.
Why? I don't think anyone knows yet.
The problem seems to be mitigated in some cases by moving the app manually to the /system partition, but this doesn't always work I don't think - for example Hangouts sometimes misses notifications for me and that's a system app. There's another nuance too - why do some apps not appear in the protected apps list (e.g. gmail)? That's not technically any different to Hangouts... is there a whitelist in the ROM somewhere?
Now I have my custom ROMs and deodexed ROMs, I'm going to be having a good poke around so hopefully we can fix this once and for all for all Honor / Huawei devices, but it would be super useful for anyone to contribute their findings so we can try and establish a pattern of behaviour while I look for clues.
Cheers all.
P
PS: Topic also mirrored here at MoDaCo
Hi Paul, very nice to see how much you contribute to Honor 7 community...
Your topic is on-point, just wanted to start thread alike.
Yes, from very quick research these problems are common to all? Huawei, not only H7
Anyway I am a newbie to my H7 and a novice at EMUI, I am also not even a hobbyist programmer. But will try to help.
ps. could you look here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66407836&postcount=6
I had similiar thoughts on, this time - Google, not EMUI 'whitelist' - Ignore optimisations
The Google settings don't accept notifications generally, and the problems - which I've seen on all Huawei and Honor devices - aren't limited to Marshmallow.

I had a problem with Tasker continuously being killed in Lollipop even though I marked it as a protected app, but I found that the issue only occurred if I used the "Smart" Power Plan, since switching the "Performance" plan the issue appears to have been resolved. I now see the same issue with Whatsapp on MM and have again selected the same plan to see if that solves the issue also

So I'm making some good progress digging around with this. I've had some interesting feedback suggesting that this is less of a problem in 'Performance' mode than 'Smart', but it is still an issue. Interested to hear thoughts on that.
App closure behaviour seems to be managed in 3 places on device...
in Marshmallow doze (this obviously isn't the cause of our issues)
in HwPowerGenieEngine3 (com.huawei.powergenie)
In HwSystemManager (com.huawei.systemmanager), also known as the 'Phone Manager' app
Sure enough, disabling the latter 2 packages seems to make notifications work 100%, but there are other things hooked into the Phone Manager app, so disabling it completely is a bit of a blunt instrument, it'll be better to try and tweak the behaviour, which is what I'm looking at now.
If anyone has clear*notification issues they can replicate and there*use to help me test fixes, please post below.
P
google hangouts, almost always fail to receive notification.
Small question for everyone having notification problems. When you look into the "automatic launch records" menu in Phone Manager, are these Apps with problems listed as restricted or as allowed? Aquamail and WhatsApp are working fine for me even with smart Power plan

unable to install it on my honor 7.
Which android version are you running?
I am now on the final version of Android 6 and my notifications are finally working flawless. (I got a EU Honor 7 running PLK-L01C432B330 - EMUI 4.0)
I'm still having reports of issues in B330. Especially in the 'Smart' power mode.

After 330 Update I got some problems, especially with WhatsApp. After checking auto start menu I recognized WhatsApp autostart was disabled and aquamail was not listed in this menu, I activated both before. Both were listed as restricted in the records menu. So they wanted to work but system blocked them. I turned it back on and aqua got the menu back after reinstall.
Which autostart menu? Screenshot please?

anyone can upload apk? i can't download from play store.
So I've made some changes on the Honor 7 to these power optimisations with a view to sorting this out. You can test in the latest release of MoDaCo Custom ROM (r4.1).
P
I will try pm plus upload later, you can also try to download it from aptoide store.
After installing PM PLUS and it's two plugins start the Phone Manager, swipe to the right, open APP AUTO LAUNCH and you can see the apps with their permissions. By clicking the clock symbol located right top you can see the past recorded launchs and if they were restricted or allowed.
Sry for bad english
I find that I keep notifications active on those particular apps by clicking on the square for the running apps, and then pulling down on the window of that app, which will highlight a lock above it, that way it is never closed. Survives a reboot as well. In other words the opposite of sliding up to close the app.

Received my Axon7 A2017G yesterday, should I return it ? (blocking issues)

Dear all,
I have received my Axon 7 (A2017G) yesterday and I'm considering to return it to the vendor.
While the hardware is close to perfection (I really love the device), some software bugs are driving me crazy.
For your information, before registering my Google account or installing any app, I have updated to B10, Nougat and then 7.1.1 (build A2017GV1.2.0B01).
I do not want to root my device because I may loose access to my corporate data (and also may loose my ability to return the device and get my money back).
The biggest issues the inability to use my Samsung smartwatch Gear S2. Soon after the phone is locked (screen off), the Gear S plugin is killed by the OS and I loose the connectivity between the phone and the Watch. I have to restart the gear application manually. I have played a bit with the applications power management options but without success (I have unticked all policies for the Samsung Gear application and even restarted the phone but the same behavior is happening). I don't see how it could be possible to solve this issue without rooting the phone...
The other issue is the famous playstore issue. I can't understand how such a visible and blocking issue has not been adressed by ZTE yet (after a week). Even if a workaround exist, it's still embarassing. Furthermore it raises concerns about ZTE software quality related processes...
Besides that, I may have missed some text messages yesterday (to be confirmed) and I have also encountered other suspicious behaviors.
Anyway, I'm hesitating because I really love the device itself but I need at least:
1) To fix the issue with my Gear S2
2) To obtain some assurance that ZTE will quickly fix the playstore issues (this is honestly difficult to understand)
Thank you in advance for your feedback and suggestions.
Best regards,
Did you try going to the power manager and disabling any battery-saving feature on that plugin app as shown here?

Was beat to it, but I suggest disabling all power management options for the Gear app. I had issues work Pandora closing when I locked the screen.
As for the Play store issue: I don't understand why it's embarrassing. Google changed something in the apk that of choosing an issue. It is an issue that had been posted on the ZTE Axon forum (https://community.zteusa.com/thread/15221?start=225&tstart=0) so I'm pretty sure they know about it and are working on it.
As I said, I have already disabled all power management options for the gear app and it's not solving the issue unfortunately
Maybe this is because the gear app is in fact an app (Gear app) and a "service" (the gear plugin), but the gear plugin is not displayed in the power management options...

If you're ok with it, I suggest deicing to the performance power plan. My only other suggestion is to perform a factor reset. Since you plan to returning it if you can't get it working your going to lose everything on they phone anyway.
Yep, that's what I will do this week-end.
Factory reset and try to see if major issues are still present. If this is the case, I'll return it.
Thanks

ZTE already announced a B2 that fixes the Play store, and Whatsapp. hang on tight. You can fix the playstore by deleting the updates and cancelling the auto update that appears, until it tries again at least.
For the Gear issue I guess you should find a way to check why the app closes. maybe there's a monitor app somewhere?
You can also try downgrading to Marshmallow B11 or B10 for some time. I think you can with the stock MiFavor installer... I guess it might even fix your Gear.
Hi fraga i might be able to provide u some information regarding this issue.
may i have ur email address.
Hi nharees, you can contact me directly in this thread or via private message in the forum. I don't understand why you would need my private email address.
So most of the issues have been fixed with the lastest version except the gear S2 which is still not working as expected (gear S plugin regularly killed by ZTE application manager...)
Just went non stock and haven't looked back. I was running a buggy b29 (camera bug) for months, and as soon as the sound issue was fixed I jumped shipped. Battery life is great, no crappy mifavour skin and everything works as expected from my testing... Just a thought

New Verizon update - G950USQU1AQD9

Woke up this morning and it was ready to be installed.
Link to update details - https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-s8-update/
The answering calls with volume up button seems weird - who was asking for that??
Also I must not have noticed but in the app switcher/multitasking there's a little button that let's you expand an app to full screen right there - was that there before? After this update a little prompt came up too tell me about it so could have been there before and not noticed it.
Verizon Galaxy S8 software update pushing through 4/21
Verizon S8 software update from NRD90M.G950USQU1AQC8 to NRD90M.G950USQU1AQD9
Changes:
- Apps optimized for infinity display
- Answer calls without touching screen - use volume up key
- Camera App Icon has new look
- Notification badges are same color across the device
- Latest Security Updates for 7.0
I'm postponing my update until further notice

I took it, everything seems the same to me.
Im waiting just in case, I know from past experiences I dont want any early updates just in case of a bootloader unlock that gets patched.
Not taking any chances on updates for a long time.
Any chance this update screws over the 1% chance this phone gets root?

Lucky you. Since I've taken the update, I have no DQA problems, but I now have to use one of those special bixby remapping apps because the update has removed my ability to intercept the bixby button signal.
I think there must be some sort of app conflict on the devices getting the DQA force closing issues. I have never seen it a single time on my device.
I've updated the DQA app and haven't had any issue yet. It only popped up for me once and I just disabled it but re enabled it to get the update.
does anyone know if there is a U firmware without bloatware, same like with the s7 ans s7E... i have the verizon one and i like the U firmware for the s7 that i also have and now is just an unlocked s7 no bloatware no garbage lol thanks in advance,,,

If it is an app conflict I am pretty sure it is with a stock app. I applied the update right out of the box (before installing anything else) and was rewarded with the DQA issue. I didn't do much research on the problem as I took it back/exchanged it because it had the red/pink screen issue referenced here. It seems that the update was hastily thrown out to address the tint issue and they may have overlooked some things during testing considering the wide number reporting the DQA issue.

Yup. I had the Bixby button remapped to work as the back key.
After the update, all in one gestures doesn't work for me anymore. Now when I press the Bixby button nothing happens (which is still better than launching the useless Bixby app).

Not only that, but none of the Bixby button remap apps work for me either.
I have tried 2 different apps & the button still does absolutely nothing (which is STILL better than accidentally opening the useless Bixby every time I meant to lower the volume LOL)

Downloaded this last night. Was trying to use the camera and kept getting a "system UI" crash notice. Phone started overheating really bad, to the point it was hot to the touch. I immediately shut it off, and left it on the ground for awhile, in case it decided to pull a Note 7. Turned it back on after 30 min, and camera works, but the phone started heating up again. Turned it back off for awhile. Started it up again, closed all apps, and so far it's okay. If you download, please keep an eye on it.

try taking out the sd-card and try the camera again using the internal sd... then try putting the sd-card in again to see what happens..
I would hate to say, maybe u have to do a factory reset, and see if that helps.. last resort...
I took the update last night,no overheating or issues, think root for our device is a long ways away as well....so who is getting the note 8?hopefully that comes with the ability to root
Heads up. Bixby button mappers are blocked from working with this update.
The update broke the built in Digits app. Support had me download and install the Digits app from the Play Store and said that it is now required. Anyone else?
Edit: It was not the OTA that broke built in Digits support. Wiping cache and loging out and then back in to my account fixed the issue. It appears that timing of the OTA and me noticing that Digits was not working was coincidence..

I edited my post above. Turns out that it was not the OTA that broke Digits.
This update has wrecked my battery life. Android System is consistently beating out screen by a factor of 2x for the amount of battery utilization , even after several reboots. Disappointing that an official OTA has made me go from singing this phone's praises to hating it within a couple of days. And no, I don't want to do a factory reset and then spend hours setting everything back up, those days were supposed to be gone the moment they prevented us from rooting and installing custom roms.
Update: The issue I had was happening in any app, whenever I'd turn the phone to landscape mode. I did some research, and found someone in the Sprint S8 forum had the issue as well, and was able to fix it by simply changing the navigation button order, then switching it right back. Haven't had any issues with overheating since Saturday, but battery has been meh since the update.

I just checked my Note 8 and sure enough ... the update is ready from Verizon. I'm installing it now before I leave for work. Let's hope this thing works out okay. This is my work device!
Same here, I am downloading now.. And I hope it works out well also....

Ah, just got back into the country, saw the posts, checked and it's available. NorCal.

Just got it as well! https://thematridox.com/2018/03/30/samsungs-galaxy-note-8-get-android-oreo-on-verizon/
does it have the video lockscreen?
Network mode in oreo has changed... Global mode was removed!
I just noticed that 'message tone' has been removed from the contacts page. No more individual text message tones for your friends or family! UGH! Why remove a feature that's been on every Android I've owned since 4.2? I don't want to use a different text messaging app. I liked the way its been set up for the past ..umm... 10 YEARS! I'm certain that Apple will never remove that feature from their devices. I want ROOT so I can go back and FIX IT!
First rule of programming ... don't remove features unless they are broken. New versions should ADD improvements, not remove features that have been around forever that has always worked! I'm almost tempted to use ODIN to go back to 7.1.1. Makes me wonder what else is missing. I'm not happy with my $1000 phone

I still have it. I have Global, LTE/CDMA, and LTE/GSM/UMTS
So far, I've noticed the phone is faster and the enhanced lock screen and notifications are great. The occasional split second hiccups when opening apps seem to have gone away. The battery seems to drain more quickly but hopefully it will settle after a few charge cycles.
I forgot to take a screen before I plugged it up, but I ran it yesterday from approximately 11am until today at 1pm. So for a new build, it wasn't bad at all.. The only hiccup I had was with my poweramp audio player.. But I uninstalled and reinstalled and it seems fine..
But it is certainly much snappier.. And the little default YouTube picture in picture is pretty cool (simply because it just does it on its own). But I sure at some point it will begin to get in my nerves just doing it all the time...
But I took a screen of the battery stat for the screen and attached it...

Has the sound improved like the S9? Is there an option to turn on Atmos sound?
Is anyone missing the force touch settings feature whwn you hold down on an app from the home screen or apps page it brings up options for the app. I cant get mine to work. Seen here at 1.min mark.
Update… i have it. Doeant work for all apps.
Can anyone tell me if I go from a rooted Verizon note 8 and update to Oreo, if I can't get the hotspot to work right, will I be able to downgrade to re-root? Or if I backup what I have now using flashify, can I go back using the restore option on flashify?
i cant get the update via ota or from samfirm

Here is all you need to update from Nougat to Oreo.
https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-note8-android-oreo-update/
After following the instructions up above and you have Oreo installed, follow the next instructions to install CRC2 here and then CRC4, then CRC5

Well, I finally got the Double Stuf Oreo goodness on my Note8. It was an absolute NIGHTMARE to get, though!! Had to do it an unholy SIX TIMES before it stuck - the first five wound up reverting back to the stock Nougat upon rebooting!
Happy to report that after a few charge cycles, battery life is great again.
I am on a Note 8 and the last OTA Oreo patched the hotspot hack via bk package disabler. I am doing the sim card trick right now for my hotspot and it's been working like a charm. It is critical for me to keep this... does anyone know if the current update being pushed now patches that as well? If so, can I disable the system update notification?
Thanks in advance
