First, let me get the formalities out of the way... long time lurker, first time poster. I hope you guys can help me out!
My GS4 semi-bricked while trying to restore my phone from LiquidSmooth ROM . My phone had no MAC address nor IP address after I flashed to LiquidSmooth, so I figured I needed to restore files I may have accidentally deleted.. The phone became stuck on the splash screen so I tried pulling the battery, going into recovery, and clearing cache/dalvik. No luck.
So then I tried to restore using a backup that I had made before flashing, but then it got stuck on the AT&T screen. Tried to clear cache/dalvik, but it didn't work. I thought maybe the back up didn't work because I was flashed into a different ROM, so I downloaded this stock rom by scrosier, and tried again... but to no avail.
Now I want to try flashing the phone back to stock, but I have a early 2008 MacBook running 10.7.5 (Lion). Odin is windows only, and Heimdall doesn't work on my version of OS X (keeps crashing the moment I open it). I thought maybe updating my MacBook to Mountain Lion (10.8) might work, but Mountain Lion is not supported on my Macbook, thus cannot update OS X... and I don't have access to a PC at this moment either.
Is my only option to go out and buy windows and install on bootcamp? Does anyone know if I could flash my phone back to stock using the computer I have now?
Sorry if my post didn't make any sense. I'm in a hurry and I want to fix my phone already! Thanks in advance
EDIT:
I have TWRP 2.5.0.3 on my phone

If you are able to access recovery then do this:
Put Liquid Smooth and its gapps on the external card using a card reader
Go into recovery, factory reset, wipe both caches, format /system, flash the rom and gapps, reboot

I actually tried to reflash Liquid Smooth and wiped cache / factory reset, but once it reboots, a screen pops up that says "Android is updating" and updates 120 files. However, when it finishes, it gives me an error along the lines of "Unfortunately... something something," and instantly reboots. Then it hangs on the Liquid Smooth splash screen. Couldn't get a good look at what the message said because it happens so quickly.

Then I suggest you flash a different ROM. Try out Slim. Liquid Smooth is just a Slim ripoff.
Put Slim and the Addons on the SD, and flash it like you would when changing ROMs. A clean wipe.

That's not Slim, he just put Slim because it's slimmed down. I haven't personally tried it. I'm a tester for SlimRoms, so thats all I ever run. Test builds. It does look nice though, but it won't have near the customization of Slim.

Yes, slimroms.net
It just depends on whether or not you want all of the Google apps typically in a regular gapps pkg, or a stripped down version. I use the AIO_Addons, or you could get the Aroma, so you can pick and choose. The Slim_gapps is a stripped down version.

Last time I flashed a weekly, it wasn't loki'd, but that was a while back. I'm running test builds from black_jck, and build my own sometimes. I mentioned it to him that the weekly wasn't loki'd but that was a while back, so I can't speak for them now. The official builds are. If you're going to flash the weekly, flash loki_doki just to be safe.

Alright, so I flashed Slim and the AIO_addons, and rebooted the phone.
Once it was rebooting, the screen i mentioned earlier popped up, that said "Android is updating" and went through 109 files. When it was done, an error popped up quickly, saying that "Unfortunately..." and I couldn't read the rest before the phone rebooted. I let the screen hang for about 10 minutes, pulled the battery, cleared cache and dalvik, and rebooted again. No luck.
I think my best option now would be to return to stock, but I can't using my macbook. So my original question still stands.. How can I return to stock without using Odin and Heimdall?

I would say so myself, Odin back to stock, but since you have a mac and I'm not sure if Heimdall support the S4 try this:
Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Format /system
Format /data
Format /internal (If CWM-based recovery)
Flash ROM, addons, reboot

Well thanks for all your help! Happy that my phone is working again without having to flash to stock.
Phone booted normally once I switched to SlimBean. Much snappier and responsive than LiquidSmooth. Fixed the problems I was having with WiFi also.
Still haven't figured out a way to flash to stock using OS X Lion since Heimdall doesn't work and Odin is Windows only... Mods please lock or close thread because I don't need help anymore

Glad you got it going man, and enjoy Slim, it's hands down the best ROM there is if you prefer minimal with tons of customization options.
I'm a bit of a newbie with rooting and flashing but have been pretty successful up until now. I installed TWRP 2.3.6.2 and CM 10.2 on my Verizon LG G2 about a month ago.
Since then I've been updating with nightlies with much success.
When the 11.0 build showed up in the CM updates list I downloaded it and installed. It failed and I had to flash an older 10.2 nightly. My device became pretty unstable after this. Most GApps were gone or somehow corrupted. I re-installed a number of them but Google Play still didn't work.
I tried updating again to an 11.0 nightly today and again it failed. I then flashed a recent 10.2 nightly that had worked for me and now my phone is stuck an infinite spinning Cyanogenmod boot screen.
I have tried every combination of holding power and volume down to try to get into TWRP to try flashing another nightly but my device just continues to reboot to LG then Cyanogenmod spinner over and over.
I decided maybe I needed to reinstall TWRP (looks like there's a new version from today). I tried to access my device with it plugged into my computer using fastboot and adb push loki_flash and it returned "device not found."
I'm totally stuck now... no idea what to do next. Would be so grateful for some guidance on how to get my device functional again.
Thanks.
One additional comment: I've tried doing Power + Volume Down during LG logo but it doesn't do anything.
I managed to get into a Hardware Key Control Mode screen by holding Power + Volume Up + Volume Down which had some options about answering calls or turning off alarm using hardware keys.
Cannot seem to do anything to get to TWRP.
To get to TWRP:
* Hold Power until the phone shuts off
* Hold Power+Volume Down until the LG logo appears
* Release Power+Volume Down then immediately hold them both down again
You'll get a message to the effect of 'Press Power to permanently erase all user settings.' Do that (if you have a custom recovery installed, it'll just boot into that).
Also keep in mind that the first install of a custom rom like CM will sit on that logo screen for a couple of minutes.
I somehow just managed to get to a screen that says "Factory hard reset. Permanently Erase User Data & Reset Settings? Press Power key to confirm, and any other key to cancel." It says "Rooted" in the upper left corner.
The screen doesn't respond to Volume Up or Volume Down and I just let it sit there for a few minutes. It reverted back to the infinite CM spinner.
At this point I'm pretty much at a loss for what to do -- and afraid to do anything to mess things up even more.
Should I be trying to go back to stock? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476

Thanks for this suggestion -- I'll try to get back to that screen and do this. Also the CM spinner was stuck for 8 hours last night... so definitely not a function of bit of a delay for first install of a custom ROM.

Phew, that worked! Back into TWRP.
Any additional guidance on what I should be doing to try to get back into a stable version of CM? I have many builds of CM 10.2 in internal storage that I could pick from. But before I try another one of those should I attempt to clean things up at all? Seems like my current configuration must have some sort of conflict that's leading to all the instability. I do have Titanium Pro installed so I believe I should be able to get my apps + data back as long as I don't completely clean out everything.
Thanks again for the help.
Also mods: just realized that I should have posted this thread in Q&A not General. Sorry about that! I don't think I can move it over myself or I would.
I think what I would like to do now is update TWRP to 2.6.3.3 and then install 11.0 using this build: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/lg-g2-development/258385-rom-wip-cyanogenmod-11-g2-vzw.html
Not sure how to update TWRP from 2.6.3.2 to 2.6.3.3 though. When I originally set up TWRP I used adb / loki-push but it's a bit of a blur how that worked since I was just following step 1-2-3 instructions.
Sorry for being such a noob with this stuff. Any additional guidance would be awesome.
As I suspected, flashing any CM ROM now leads to an infinite CM spinner so I think I need a plan B to get my device working again. At least I can now get to TWRP thanks to the help above.
Not sure where to go from here.
Did you try to wipe data, cache, dalvik cache and system? Then install cm. I think this is why you got a bootloop :/

Yup, when I finally got into TWRP I did this and was able to install a version of CM 10.2 that actually loaded.
All my apps and settings are obviously gone now so it's a good time to make the leap to TWRP 2.6.3.3 and CM 11.0. Trying to figure out how to do that now (in the proper forum!):

I htink the wipe would have helped from the beg. Any time you jump roms I suggest doing a wipe. Also one thing you may want to look at is a backup of all your settings and everything, I use titanium and it has helped me out in situations like this in the past.

Thanks, makes a ton of sense.
I also use Titanium to backup. When I do a fresh install of TWRP and CM 11.0 can I restore my system data in addition to apps + app data? I'm not sure to what restoring extent system data could create conflicts with the CM 11.0 build. For example will all the Google Mobile Services system data from my CM 10.2 build create conflicts?
What I really want is to easily bring back ~150 apps + all of my SMS messages, Contacts, Email settings, Homescreen layout and settings, etc. Not exactly sure what's achievable.

You can safely use TB to restore user apps, their data and trebutchets data if you use that. Backing up sms and contacts with TB, I'm not sure about that as I used other app "super sms backup". And about emails I have no idea. Also it's not a good idea to restore settings, better to set them again

You know, I was wondering as well of how to get to TWRP if a rom didn't boot. I got to that screen too and thought it would erase the phone. This is good to know and should be a sticky somewhere.
Hello,
I have been trying to upgrade my nexus 4 to 4.4.4 or 4.4.3. I currently run the rom below and keep getting system update notifications. its downloading the update over and over and failing and killed my data plan lastnight.
When I flash a rom for 443 right now it looks to install fine. With some roms i get halfway through the config, Just after giving your name if im right. You can scroll down on the page, the arrow at the bottom of the screen that you are to click to go to the next screen turns from a down arrow to a right arrow but it never lets you click it to continue. im stuck. ive tried unclicking everything. My only safety is having the backup from 4.4.2 and i restore it back.
Some roms let me go all the way through the config but when its at the home screen and is giving you the quick tutorial, you click on the screen to continue and you can hear it click so it knows you touched the screen but it never goes further. again cant get to my homescreen to do anything. have to restore.
Ive been in this loop for a while now and just looking for any suggestions to why i cant put 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 on? Wouldnt call myself a noob with all of this but im kinda feelin like it now.
Nexus 4, Android Version 4.4.2
Kernel Version 3.4.76-NexusExperience-CAF
Nexus 5 Experience Release 3.1 CAF Kernel

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx

ok..
did you make a backup in recovery? if you did, try this, as a wipe isnt required to upgrade. restore your backup, boot up, then go back and dirty flash that rom over what you have. dirty flash means dont wipe a single thing. btw, when you flash a rom, it automatically wipes dalvik and cache, so you never actually have to do that when rom flashing(and never have to wipe anything for kernel flashing).
when i did that i can see icons on the homescreen which is different but i still get stuck at the same spot. the screen is faded with a blue circle in the center that says welcome make your self at home. it has a create more screens for apps and folders wording at the bottom with an arrow, and a OK button.
I click OK and hear it click but nothing happens. i try to scroll for the arrow and hear actions but nothing happens. I can pull down the menu at the top and goto my email. but when i go back to home, that screen is still there. ive rebooted the device. tried clicking back to get past it. run task killer. it always comes back to this intro screen on the home screen

But after flashing any version of CM it either doesn't get past the unlocked bootloader warning (when I use cm-10.1.3-xt907 cm-11-20140104-SNAPSHOT-M2-xt907 or cm-10.2-20131102-SNAPSHOT-M1-xt907)

I've done the factory wipe a dozen times, even tried formatting at the partitions before installing. Wiping cache/davlik...nothing seems to help. Any advice?

Hmm, the CM wiki is confusing me on this
https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_xt907
Your device must be bootloader unlocked.
For CM 11.0, the device builds have been unified. Get the latest CM 11.0 build for KitKat bootloader updated devices here and for devices still on JellyBean bootloader here.
For CM 12.0 and newer, KitKat bootloader is required and builds were de-unified again. Get them under the usual xt907 builds.

I flashed the boot.img from VZW_XT907_4.1.2-9.8.1Q-66_1FF.xml.zip, but that didn't seem to help any.

I didn't remember correctly,
cm11 and cm12 require the kitkat bootloader
where did you find the recovery?
should be a cm recovery on their site, could try that

I am unlocked (it yells at me every time I power on...)
Flashed twrp-2.8.6.0-xt907, everything went fine
But after flashing any version of CM it either doesn't get past the unlocked bootloader warning (when I use cm-10.1.3-xt907 cm-11-20140104-SNAPSHOT-M2-xt907 or cm-10.2-20131102-SNAPSHOT-M1-xt907)
or it just shows the CM face with the white circle growing out over and over (if I use cm-12.1-20160523-NIGHTLY-xt907 or cm-12.1-20160530-NIGHTLY-xt907)
I've done the factory wipe a dozen times, even tried formatting at the partitions before installing. Wiping cache/davlik...nothing seems to help. Any advice?

Any resolution?
I have the same problem as Bassgoonist. Wondering if you ever got it resolved?
I have xt907, rooted, unlocked via sunshine, KK bootloader. Installed twrp-2.8.6.0-xt907. Flashed cm-12.1-20160822-NIGHTLY-xt907 and it never gets past initial boot animation. I also tried the CM recovery which installed fine, but exhibited the same symptoms.
So, did msm8960.zip work? Should I just keep trying different nightlies?
Has anyone had this problem and gotten past it?

((Sorry for the lack of links, I'm new here and the links aren't yet allowed for me. Hopefully you can cut and paste them.))
I was so close for so long. You know how you start going around in circles, and you think you've done everything, but maybe you forget a step? Yea.
I won't repeat everything I did, but here's the links I followed, they have explained it pretty good:
1st: forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/117181-any-dev-is-intrested-in-unlocking-latest-kernel-of-razr-m
2nd: Well, I had to pay the 25$ for sunshine. But it was worth it: theroot.ninja
3rd: Follow this, but skip the first section on rooting, you've already done that: wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_xt907
The thing that is missing in the last step, that I thought I had done, but not completely apparently, is this:
Just before you install the CM21 mod, you are in twrp and you've done your backup. The directions say "7.Select Wipe and then Factory Reset." Well that's not quite enough. INSTEAD you need to choose wipe, then choose the advanced option, and wipe every single thing except the sdcard. (Do it twice, why not? We'll teach those partitions to mess with us!)
Finish up with the install as the directions suggest and that should work. It worked for me on an xt907, starting from the 182.46.15 firmware version. The first boot does take several minutes.
Thanks to Cube Computer Channel on YouTube for having a great, long video that was full of information, of which I ultimately only needed the three second reminder/kick in the head that I need to wipe all partitions.
Good luck all!
S1gma40 out.
So i wanted to go for some Pie rom and it turns out i cannot do that because reasons. Done everything that was listed in instructions, done even more things like flashing stock image, wiping everything, flashing fbe recovery, wiping everything again (besides recovery ofc), then pushing the rom to /sdcard, flashing it, wiping internal storage. It doesnt really matter what i do and what rom do i flash. Every time i end up staring at Google's boot logo (AOSPExtended is stuck at boot animation). I know there is a line like "be patient" in the instructions, but my patience had to come to an end eventually and it was after like 2 hours of boot logo, and another 2 hours of AOSPEX's boot animation. The phone is not heating up, but it would crash on the 1st phase of boot animation and reboot till infinity after restoring TWRP backup. I really wanted to use Pie, but i have run out of ideas on how to make it boot.
It's really an unusual case. But I had it on my previous phone, the LG Optimus G. I'm from stock 4.4 and every higher Android version rom won't boot on my phone. I gave it up but two months later, I tried again and bizarrely, It boot fine without any reasons. Sorry I can't help you what the problem is, but I can only tell you that you can try Pie roms a few time later and wait for you luck

By reading the flash instructions CAREFULLY.
Format data after flashing. It's the button next to advanced wipe button.

Then yeah, I did it.
Did you ever get this working? I'm having the exact same issue. I've tried several Pie Roms and so far no luck getting past the boot animation.
Oreo Roms work and boot up quick. I've updated to the latest TWRP as well. Is there a v9 Vendor Image we can try flashing?

Didn't really have time to mess with this lately, as i need my phone up 24/7, but i tried to get this working as soon as first Pie ROM's started to come out. Couldn't get it working then, and 2nd time was about the time i created this post.
The lastest vendor image is OPM7.181205.001, Dec 2018, as far as i know, so... We are kinda stuck with 8.1.0 for now.
