How to force update from 7.0 to 7.1.1? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a 6p and it came with 7.0. While I was downloading 7.1.1 I accidentally rebooted, and now I can't get the system to give me the option to redownload. Any way to force the issue or do I just need to be patient?

You can always just download and and install the factory image or OTA from Google. No need to wait.

How do I do that? Does it wipe my data?

Nexus toolkit is a godsend

You'll need a PC and sideload a full OTA https://developers.google.com/android/ota.
Doesn't wipe userdata.

Its pretty easy just make sure you follow the drivers guide , delete any previous drivers you have from previous phones, the toolkit has a program to do this .
Pretty self explanatory

[GUIDE] Simple, Non-Destructive Root for Nexus S i9023, i9020A and 4G Gingerbread

Disclaimer
This may work on other versions - I can't see any reason why not - but the only ones it is confirmed working for is the i9023 and the i9020A running 2.3.6 and the Nexus S 4G running 2.3.7. If you use this to root other handsets then reply in the thread and I'll update this. This assumes you are starting with a completely stock Nexus S.
About
This works with Windows only by using DooMLoRD's excellent Easy Rooting Toolkit to root without deleting your data in under a minute.
Credits
This is a noob-friendly mashup of various tutorials and sources to provide you with root access on the stock Gingerbread ROM, and nothing else. Credits to DooMLoRD, for his amazing toolkit and kursk for the original i9023 tutorial that made me think Consider donating to DooMLoRD if you find this helpful.
Steps to Root your handset
Preparation
1)Update your Nexus S to 2.3.6 if it isn't already, getting the update file from here.
2)Rename the file you downloaded to "update.zip". Place it in the root of your SD card.
3)Reboot your phone into Recovery Mode by powering it off, then on again while holding the Vol + button.
4)Now you’ll see a triangle with exclamation mark, now repeatedly press Vol+ and power button to enter Recovery Mode.
5)Select "apply sdcard update.zip" and if necessary, follow on screen instructions to slect the update.zip file.
6)Reboot the device and you will be updated to 2.3.6

Connecting to your Computer
1)Download and install the Android SDK. This may not be necessary for the rooting process but is certainly handy for future hacking or mods that you will likely want to do once you've rooted.
2)Install the Nexus S drivers as detailed here.
3)Make sure USB debugging is still enabled on your device and you are ready to proceed to rooting.

Rooting your Nexus S
1)Download DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit here.
2)Extract the zip to your desktop.
3)Connect your phone by USB and confirm USB Debugging is still enabled.
4)Double click the runme.bat file located in DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit
5)Read the command prompt and press any key to root.
6)Your handset will be rooted and then reboot. The process should take around 1 minute.
7) Congratulations! You now have the stock ROM rooted and Superuser installed.

Click to collapse
Further Steps
Now that your phone is rooted, you can use apps that require superuser access such as Root Explorer to modify system files.
You can install ROM Manager and use that to flash custom ROMs.
You may wish to unroot your device. This can be done as detailed by DooMLoRD here

I hope that some people find this useful.
But what's wrong with just flashing the signed superuser zip from stock recovery or any other superuser zip from cwm?

Unlocking the boot-loader erases the phone. Hence the "Non-Destructive" part of the title.
Yes, this method does it in under a minute and doesn't wipe your phone, making it easier for people who are new to modding or just want an easy and quick root.
Rooted an 9020a stock 2.3.6. Great work, thanks.

Couple quick noob questions...
Does this unlock the bootloader?
Is this considered the old fashion way of rooting the NS4G?
I've tried the One Click Root by ShabbyPenguin with no luck
So I'm lookin to get this NS4G runnin 2.3.7 Gingerbread rooted..
Hoping someone can answer these questions for me thanks.
FWIW I'm not a complete noob I'm coming from a rooted EVO4G so I'm a noob in the NS4G area completely lol thanks in advanced
I've just checked my Nexus S i9023 and it appears the boot loader is still locked, in answer to your question. It is not possible to unlock the boot loader without wiping all your personal data.
Hope this helps.

I ran the One Click Root by Shabby but I keep getting
"error: device not found"
And I've installed every single driver that I've found and I still get the same error running the one click root
I guess my question should've been
What's another way to root the ns4g without the one click root?

This method can be used to root a Nexus S 4G: I can't confirm it personally because I'm in the UK and don't have access to any kind of 4G tech, but "Samsung Nexus S 4G 2.3.7" is listed in the supported devices post here in DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit Thread

I'm getting a nexus s i9020T soon and was wondering if this root method might work for it? When it comes to computers I'm a complete idiot. If something does go wrong I'll be clueless how to fix it. The reason I want to root is to remove some apps I can't uninstall and also so I can do a full backup including app data. If this method is not suitable what is the best way to do it? A super easy one click method would be preferable. Thanks!
Yes! This Method Works! If you follow this step by step! It will Unlock the bootloader and give root access! I just rooted this morning ladies and gents!

In order to Root a phone, you should be unrooted.
Don't be afraid of the technical terms. If you've jailbroken iPoops, then you should be able to Root an Android no problem!
FOLLOW THIS THREAD STEP BY STEP.....AND THIS THREAD HERE. If you have a question about a specific step, feel free to ask. Between the two threads, you should be able to figure it out.

I find these instructions a little easier to follow. Skip down to the notes #4 for unrooted phones. The one step left off is you need busybox installed on your phone before safestrap will install. Search for it on play store. Like was mentioned, ask questions if you get stuck.

[Q] N4 root 5.1.1

Hey guys, i've been looking at some different guides and ill be trying to root my N4 running 5.1.1 using that, just wanted to make sure it's legit:
ive installed the adb drivers from the 15 sec installer found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
and root it using this guide: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/how-root-nexus-5-4-android-5-1-1-lollipop-install-cwm-recovery-1502856 (except ill be using twrp not cwm)
(backed up apps and messages using helium app, assuming this process will wipe my data)
just wanted to make sure if this way is legit, or i may have missed something (i assume my bootloader is locked)

That looks good, just make sure you understand that in the when you flash the recovery the command is "fastboot flash recovery *the file name of your recovery file*" make sure to include the .img in the file name.
EDIT: Make sure to remember to unlock your bootloader before flashing the recovery by using the command "fastboot oem unlock" after booting into the bootloader.

I don't know of any way to check if the unlock was successful, but I imagine it would say something in the command prompt after running the command.
Yes, it is going to wipe your data and sdcard folder so anything you want to keep you have to make a backup of on your computer or somewhere else.
EDIT: BTW this guide goes over the process in alot more detail than the guide you found and are using, so if you're still unsure about the process this guide will probably help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/guide-ultimate-nexus-4-root-guide-t2018179

First of all, Thanks! again!
Second, i've seen this guide, and even though you are probably right, it still refers to older versions of android and im a bit skeptical about using it. Plus, it shows a way of unlocking and rooting without losing data but i don't want to use it because it's not the "normal" way and im not sure if it will work.
and one more thing: flashing the recovery means i will have it as long as i want or each time i would want to use it i will have to flash it again?

In the guide I linked it gives you a way to make it permanent. If you don't do that I think you have to reflash the recovery after every time you boot into the normal ROM.

Do a quick Google search and you'll find the latest factory image straight from Google themselves. There will be a lot of videos and articles online about how to do it. I know it isn't recommended on xda, but to get yourself out of the soft brick you are in, Wugfresh's Nexus root toolkit will do the job. You can then update your phone from there and then properly research flashing roms onto the phone

These full OTA zips don't require a certain preceding build number to be installed prior to installation.

I don't know what you can do, sorry. I'm not sure why you wouldn't just unlock your bootloader and leave it unlocked, that alone would mean you could fix this issue in a matter of minutes. I know me saying this is of no use to you right now, but hopefully it'll impress on you (and anyone reading) the importance of having a fail-safe when things go sideways like this.

An update failing is the single most likely cause of a problem like this. The issue here isn't with the update itself, otherwise pretty much every other user taking the update would be experiencing the same thing. There could be any number of reasons for this update going badly for you.
If you had researched you would have known that you need to unlock the bootloader when you first get the device, before you commit too much data to it. Either that or just back up your personal data, unlock the bootloader and then copy your data back. Surely even that is a better option that being stuck in a situation like this where you essentially have a brick.
All you can do now is contact Google support, explain what has happened, and ship it off to them to have it fixed. You shouldn't have to pay if it genuinely wasn't your fault. And remember to unlock your bootloader when you get it back.

Oh, that is not a good situation at all. You might need to find a good repairer in your area and pay for them to fix it for you.

I've heard that it's basically unrepairable.. As there is literally no way to flash android again without an unlocked bootloader and with OEM unlocking disabled

An accredited repair centre should have access to software tools that can do it.

did not understood what you said. can you explain a little bit more?

You can use adb sideload to install one of the new full OTA files with the stock recovery, I have instructions in my guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
These full OTA zips don't require a certain preceding build number to be installed prior to installation.
