greetings!
I've been searching for hours and bashing my brains trying to get wifi working. It originally broke after an OTA update
tried all the tips and still nothing works permanently. The things I have tried are too numerous to remember or list.
It's not a hardware issue as wifi can work for periods of time but it always breaks - I assume because of an update that downloads and breaks it.
i see talk of reflashing "modules" with safestrap but safestrap has never worked properly and now does not work at all ("unfortunately safestrap has stopped") Can modules be flashed from Odin?
TIA !
Sorry to hear about your troubles man. Been there, done that...
IMHO, if you don't have hardware issues, this what you should do:
ODIN to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2616221 (post 1, the Returning to Stock / ODIN section)
After that root
Root with towel root (https://towelroot.com/)
Install SuperSU (PlayStore) and let it disable Knox.
Install BusyBox (PlayStore) and let it cook
Install SELinux Mode Changer (PlayStore). Run and set it to Permissive.
Install Safestrap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=45693712)
Now it's time to flash you favorite rom (Safestrap has the list). Copy the following to your SD card:
Your favority ROM
SuperSU.zip file. (http://download.chainfire.eu/451/Sup...erSU-v2.01.zip)
Your modem zip file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...96&postcount=1).
I337 Build.prop/APN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...81&postcount=9)
Same boat as well I believe, need help please.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T I337 ucufnbn1 MDF. And I've tried to get into the UMTS menu with every possible number and trick I can find on Google, here, YouTube. And nothing works. I just want to be able to sim unlock it and also be able to put cwm recovery on it so I can put ROMs on it. I do have it rooted with Towel and have busy box installed as well as SU. Cyanogen's website picks it up by its other name jfelte or whatever and has a lot of ROMs. If someone could please help me finish getting the rest of the way, that would be greatly appreciated.
Few screens to help out
Here are a few screen shots that I hope help someone out. Please let me know what I can do if anything.

So this one
So are you talking about this one and if so, why would I do that when that's what I'm already on. I'm on nb1 4.4.2 rooted with towel. So I'm lost in what your trying to explain.

Here is a screenshot of where I'm talking about. Oh and Safe strap 3.72 is installed perfectly thank you so very much for that. Your awesome. And a lot of people are saying when you reboot and it shows the "Safestrap is disabled" screen you can't get back into it. I did just fine.

Ok , well I honestly appreciate your help with this. With this setup can I install any ROMs at all? Am I limited to certain ones or can I install any compatible ones for my model? I know sometimes when your on a certain stock ROM your stuck with only like certain types. Like Paranoid or whatever it is, and a few others.

You can not install any roms. The i337 on any firmware higher than mdl can only flash touch wiz based roms. See the index, all things at&t.... for roms that are compatible.

This mini-guide should work!
The problem is, in order to get WiFi working, you need to install the NB1 modules, but to do that, you need to install Safestrap. However, you can not install Safestrap because the app keeps closing on you. There is a simple fix to this, which I will explain later. For now, just read this WHOLE post BEFORE you do anything, and keep in mind that I am NOT held liable if you mess up your phone. Use this at your own risk.
1.) Root your phone
If you're already rooted with something like SuperSU or Superuser, skip this. If not, read ahead. Download and install the Towelroot APK file attached to this post, open it, and click 'make it ra1n'. If your phone didn't reboot, now you have root (they need to trademark that). Now, down below, I also included the APK for SuperSU. Download and install it. Now open it. When you open it, let it install the 'Normal' way, not via the 'TWRP/CWM' way. Also, when it asks you to disable KNOX, say yes, wait a couple of minutes (it will still be loading) and reboot your phone. Open up SuperSU again, click 'Yes' to disable KNOX again, and now you have a good base to start from.
2.) Install Safestrap AFTER fixing the error
The error your are getting is easily fixed. Go to the Play Store and install 'SELinux Mode Changer'. Open it, grant it root access, and change the mode to 'Permissive'. Now, open up Safestrap again (you mentioned you already installed it), and it shouldn't force close. Click 'Install', and if the 'Reboot to Recovery' option below is not grayed out after that then it worked.
3.) Download and install the NB1 modules
On your phone, download the included NB1 modules ZIP file I attached for you, and once that is done you need to reboot. After the Galaxy S4 logo, you'll see a screen that says 'SAFESTRAP: DISABLED' and there will be a little robot. TIP: To enter Safestrap, press the menu button (physical, hardware key) under 'Recovery' at that screen. To continue to Android, press the back key (again, physical) under the 'System' tab. For now, press the menu button under 'Recovery'. Now, click 'Install' which should be in red, click 'Add zips', and navigate to your Downloads folder. Now click on the NB1 modules ZIP you just downloaded. Swipe to install, and reboot. This time, hit the back key under 'System'.
All done!
Now, Android should (and will) boot up, and you'll have working WiFi! If, for some odd reason, you don't have WiFi- do NOT panic! Just search around for the MF3 modules and flash those! All is good, all is good. A lot of this guide was taken from my post about my personal method of SIM unlocking the AT&T Galaxy S4 without the dialer codes or an AT&T SIM. It was just modified a little to work for you.
Remember, hit thanks! :good:
I'm entirely new to anything phone/development related so I apologize for my ignorance (I also apologize if this is in the wrong section). I've had a razr M for about 2 years now and I'm entirely content with it except after the last update I can no longer use my foxfi for wifi access. From what I understand I can't root my phone and downgrade from this operating system so my question is this: Can I buy a new one off ebay for ~$100, root it and use foxfi (or some other free wifi tether) while keeping my unlimited data and not "bricking" it? The battery on my current phone has gone to crap anyways and I was considering buying a replacement phone considering they're only ~$100 anyways.
It's a pain in the but trying to figure all of this out with only limited time to browse the internet at work and trying to sort the 100's of pages of info from my phone.
Is this feasible? Are there certain things I need to verify about a phone before I buy it to make sure I can complete this process?
Thanks in advance,
Rory
If you're on the latest firmware, you CAN root with Towel Root and unlock with Motopocalypse. Then you can downgrade back to JB. There's a method posted by @bweN diorD somewhere in this forum.

Thanks RikRong! How do I know if I'm on the latest firmware (does that just mean the latest operating system? My phone says 4.4.2 so I'm assuming that's a yes)? Sorry, there's a thousand new terms and I'm struggling to take in what this all means.
When it comes to trying to root my phone, since I have no more foxfi I also don't have a way to have internet access on my computer/tablet to walk me through the rooting process/assist me if something goes wrong with the... would you think it's intuitive enough/fullproof that if I print out the thread I can just follow it through and shouldn't have issues? Also, I looked through the first 4 or 5 pages in this forum and didn't find any threads started by "bweN dior" but I'm probably just overlooking what I'm looking for. Do you know what the thread was titled?

actually, i didnt make a guide for this model. i made it for the hd/maxx hd. the root and bootloader unlock is the same and you can use those files, but you can NOT use any of the phone specific software in the guide or you will likely brick your phone.

Yeah, I saw that it was someone else that made the guide for the M, but I like how yours is set-up. I was going to point him to your thread in the HD forum for rooting and unlocking, then refer him to guide in the M forum for downgrading. Use Bwen's guide to use Towel Root and Motopocalypse. Get TWRP from here: http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/msm8960/TWRP2710-RAZR_M-KITKAT.img and flash a SU zip to gain permanent root. Then use this guide to downgrade: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786016 .

Okay, I'm trying to start this process. From my droid, I downloaded http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/msm8960/TWRP2710-RAZR_M-KITKAT.img but immediately I'm encountering problems. My phone says it cannot open this file. I'm already dreading this is going to be difficult/dangerous...
Why can't I open this file? Also, what is flashing a SU zip?
There is far too much about this I don't understand.
I am willing to pay someone to root a razr m for me. Do I have any takers?
Towel Root and Motopocalypse are both apps that you can download to the phone and then run. They're just apps, so they are as easy as opening the app then running. You need to use Towel Root, then Motopocalypse to unlock, and then you can install TWRP. If you don't want to use fastboot to install recovery, then you can flash it with Rashr or Flashify. Just download TWRP and place on your external SD, no need to open or extract it. Flash it with one of those apps. Once you're rooted and unlocked, you should be able to use that guide to downgrade.

just use the tutorial i posted before as a guide, substituting the files @RikRong gave you for the recoveries.
i just updated the guide to include a complete step by step for flashing the recoveries and su zip.
the only thing you will need is fastboot and adb in the same folder with your recovery file.
the guide instructs to use adb and fastboot from my script, but you wont have my script. thats why you need to grab adb and fastboot from google.
its not difficult, you just dont understand what needs to be done. you dont open the recovery with the phone booted up. just read the guide and subsequent link to the step by step and you will quickly see where you are going wrong.

just a quick disclaimer for those not following along, ^^^^^ the firmware and recoveries in this guide are for the 926 only!!! use it for reference only!! any other files in the guide and the guide itself, is universal.

Now I think I got problems. I thought I had it all figured out with all of the walkthroughs. I have the phone in fastboot mode and I was flashing it with RSD for the previous firmware. It was going through the steps and on 7/20 it said failed flash. I tried again and now it says failed flash after 1/20. I'm afraid to try and boot the phone. What should I do?

Yes. I think? I did these steps successfully
-----------------------------------------
2. BOOTLOADER UNLOCKING
-----------------------------------------•Download Towel Root [XDA] [WEBSITE] - Disregard if you have previously rooted using Towel Root
•Download Motopocalypse [WEBSITE] [DOWNLOAD]
•Place both on external SDcard
•Install and run Towel Root
•Follow any in-app prompts
•Reboot
•Install and run Motopocalypse
•Follow any in-app prompts
•Reboot
•PROFIT!
My error specifically says this:
Failed flashing process. 7/20 flash modem "non-hlos.bin" -> USB error occurred while reading/writing.
I unplugged it and tried another USB port and it went through all the steps 20/20. Then it rebooted my phone and the phone says "please wait, this may take a few minutes". After several minutes RSD told me to "manually power on the phone". Since the phone was never shut off I couldn't do this so I unplugged the USB and replugged it in thinking maybe there was another USB error. RSD has now finished and says result is "PASS". However my phone still says "please wait, this may take a few minutes". Should I let me phone be or should I restart it?

It's working!!!! I just ran RSD again (and this from the start on a usb 2.0 port as I read 3.0 can screw it up). This time it worked like a charm! How do I keep my phone from automatically updating back to KK?? I didn't let it update when KK originally came out (I just kept clicking postpone) until about a month or two later it just updated on it's own. Well my phone just started automatically downloading a system update again. I put it in airplane mode but how do I keep this update from happening again and getting screwed by KK again?
Hi, I have been trying to find a guide on flashing my G900A (AT&T) model, but I have found no success. I was able to downgrade my firmware with odin and root using via towelroot. It worked, but then a few hours when I restarted my phone it was stuck on the boot loader and I had to take it to At&T to restore because my text messages weren't going through after I tried to reflash it myself. I am running the latest update with AT&T and I'm 100% sure that doesn't work with towelroot. I'm just trying to get a custom rom on it because the stock touchwiz is just terrible. Thank you for your help.

Sorry to hear your phone derped after you got so far. I'm on 4.4.4 G900A with G900AUCU2AOA2 baseband trying to see if it's safe to downgrade and root. Do you know what your specs were before you down/rooted?
And as far as offering help, I have another phone that is on Lollipop 5.0 Smg900a, and I hear it's almost impossible to get that rooted, it's bootloader is extremely well patched against any exploits
Best of luck to you though.
Let me know if you find a way please

You can easily root the OA2 update.
I couldn't find the needed files for OA2 so I learned how to obtain and create them myself. As always, backup your data first. I take no responsibility for damage or loss. Follow at your own risk:
Follow the guide found here with two minor changes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/general/how-to-root-g900aucu2aoa1-4-4-4-2-3-2015-t3021120 Make sure you are already updated to OA2. If you end up following the troubleshooting section, be aware that it wipes data.
First change to guide: At step five, instead of using the G900A_OA1_Stock_Kernel, use the G900A_OA2_Stock_Kernel located at: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347799283
Second change to guide: If you need the OA2 zip for the troubleshooting section, it is located here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347799282 Apply it after you have applied all the others. Then start at step two.
You may need to re-install BusyBox, not sure. Also, ignore the rest of the guide. I don't know if it will work in Safestrap as I don't use Safestrap.
After following this, you should be rooted with the OA2 update. No need to downgrade or anything.

Hey man thanks for the explanation. I actually achieved root using that exact same guide already.
Funny thing is, because for several days I couldn't find ANY info on OA2... I ended up flashing the OA1 kernel on my phone like the guide said. Zero negative consequences.
I got to install Safestrap too because I really like custom ROMS (will mess with it a little later)
I also got the Valve game Portal working on my phone, and connected my PS3 controller to the phone wirelessly.
Really cool of you to upload those files though, they should get their own thread.
OP. What I don't understand is after you flashed a downgrade and got a glitch... why didn't you try to go into stock recovery and do the factory reset before taking it back? I found like 2 different downloads for the same firmware. If I was in your position I would factory wipe the phone if the flash didn't go right and try another one.
There's got to be more zips out there you can flash with odin.

The boot.img contains the kernel and is what is inside the tar.md5 that is flashed in ODIN. No need to extract the kernel from the boot.img. I extracted the boot.img from the update and then followed the rwilco12 link in a post at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2154762 to create the tar.md5.

My main motivation was that I like my kernel to be up-to-date even though older kernels may work. Since I believe this was an update soley to address the Stagefright bug, it is very likely the kernel didn't change much if at all.

You can easily root the OA2 update.
I couldn't find the needed files for OA2 so I learned how to obtain and create them myself. As always, backup your data first. I take no responsibility for damage or loss. Follow at your own risk:
Follow the guide found here with two minor changes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...to-root-g900aucu2aoa1-4-4-4-2-3-2015-t3021120 Make sure you are already updated to OA2.

I read the guide that you found but could not get towel root to work in step two. Also step one requires it to be on 0A1. Should I start at step 3? Sorry for being such a noob. Thanks.

You say you aren't on OA1, so are you on lollipop, if so you can't root as has been mentioned earlier in the thread.

You wrote you want to reset your phone to the BS free ROM, but then at the end you write you want to get root access. What state was your phone in when you started to try this? Was your phone already rooted? Was your phone already rooted and on BS free ROM and just needed to clean up your phone and get back onto the BS free ROM? If you were not already rooted and had taken the Verizon OTA updates to Lollipop, chances are good you cannot root your phone, and therefore you cannot run the BS Free ROM. Let us know what state your phone was in when you started this so we can help you better.

What software version you're on and did you have root before you tried to reset to Verizon Galaxy S5 to BS_FREE_Lolipop??
To reply to everyone the only thing I ever did with the phone was update to 5.0 If I can't get root no big deal but I really want to install something that gets rid of all the Verizon junk apps :/

If you never rooted your phone and you took all of the Verizon OTA updates to 5.0 you are most likely on OG5 and cannot root your phone. If you took an OTA update in the past few days before trying this, you may have been on the latest OK3 security patch update. Your best bet would probably be to find the OG5 full factory tar file and flash it in ODIN to get your phone back to a working state. I think there is a thread in the general section where you can find the file you need.

Well I was able to repair it finally using the tool, I'm still on 5.0 so I'm guessing I'm screwed... What about downgrading and then doing root / custom ROM? Or am I just screwed all together LOL I'd just sell the phone at this point since I no longer have Verizon (they're ****) but still have the phone.

Sorry to keep saying no, but if you are on OE1, OG5, or the new OK3 you cannot downgrade. You are stuck where you are.
I'm trying to root, then unlock my Retail phone. I heard it can be done on BOAF 5.0.1. I downgraded my phone to KK ANJ5 (details on what steps I took, here)
I actually did a Factory Data Wipe twice before beginning, although the instructions said I only needed to do it once (doing it twice shouldn't hurt).
When I tap the System Updates button, it appears to start downloading, then after a few minutes, I'll get an error message saying "Download Unsuccessful". I've done this several times. Why is this happening now? I've cleared everything. Could Verizon have pulled the update? Can I install the two files manually? If so, please point me to the right direction. Thanks.

I took the latest safe upgrade, I think it's BP1 or something like that., to 5.1.1. THAT worked.
So basically we have to be on 5.1.1 ??

What confused me and a few other people in that thread is that you NEED to flash that kernel before the SuperSU linked there if you want to root 5.1.1 firmware. I thought it was just if you had taken the OTA 5.1.1.

This is what I did (I think). Kinda hard to remember everything. For more information, read through the HOWTO thread. I think I started posting at about page 9.
went ahead and did the safe upgrade via Odin
Swapped out my MicroSD card for a different one I had laying around
Unlocked my phone
Powered Down (If I could, or remove the battery)
Removed the MicroSD card (otherwise it would boot loop)
Connected to My Computer
Boot to Download Mode (DOWN ARROW+HOME+POWER BUTTON)
Flashed TWRP using Odin
Reinserted the original MicroSD Card (Different SD card than what was used during the unlock process, the same one I was using prior to unlocking)
Booted into TWRP (UP ARROW+HOME+POWER BUTTON)
It prompted me to install SuperUser, so I did, it caused a bootloop, so I pulled my battery.
Removed MicroSD Card, plugged it into my computer and put SuperSU.zip and a kernel (See this post) zip file on it, re-inserted the MicroSD into my phone
Booted to TWRP (UP ARROW+HOME+POWER BUTTON)
Flashed the two files I'd just put on my MicroSD (Not sure if a reboot is required or if they could be done at the same time, I rebooted each time)
I did not clear cache/dalvik. Not sure if that was necessary.
This is all what got me to where I'm at, now.

For 5.0.1, you don't need to flash a new kernel, so that's why it works. If you want to upgrade to N910VVRU2BPA1:
Download N910VVRU2BPA1_StockRestore.tar.md5.7z and uncompress with 7-zip.
Flash with Odin.
Reboot phone back into Download Mode and flash TWRP with Odin.
Copy MultiSystem-Kernel_LP-5.1.1.zip and BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160203160253-TruncatedBoot-Fix.zip to the phone's internal memory. (Include xposed-v75-sdk21-arm-arter97-snapdragon.zip if you want XPosed.)
Reboot to recovery and flash all three in the above order.
Wipe cache and Davlik cache. Reboot to system.

There seems to be a bug in the detection routine on the program that changes the bootloader to developer when run on 4.4.4. If you want to follow the original directions, upgrade (first) to a 5.0.1 firmware since that is known to work with the unlocker and no new kernel needs to be flashed. If you get it to work for 5.0.1, then you can always upgrade to 5.1.1 or flash another rom.
If you want to try to go straight to 5.1.1 by flashing through Odin, you can try it. I'm almost positive you could downgrade to 5.0.1 if that doesn't work. (If you take the software upgrade through Verizon, you will have problems downgrading AFAIK.)

If that doesn't work, I recommend you rollback to 4.4.4 (you should be able to if you're on BOAF), then take the safe upgrade to BP1. Once you do that, you should be good to go. That is, I wasn't able to convert to developer mode on KK, but after taking the safe upgrade, I was. Maybe it had to do with the BOAF bootloader, and if that's the case, "maybe' you're ok doing it as is. Good luck. I'm sure you'll be back if it doesn't work, but if it DOES work, can you report back? In fact, I also have a thread in Q&A titled Root Survey. Please post there as well ONLY if you were able to successfully convert. I wanted to compile a list of users that were able to convert, where they were before they started, what worked, what didn't, and so far, all what I'm seeing is, is that starting from KK doesn't work, although we were told all along to keep KK. I also heard one user said that he had taken all OTAs to 5..1.1., still made the conversion process work, BUT, his phone was a developer phone to begin with but he accidentally locked it with a Retail ROM. I'm kind of a noob, myself, but from what I do know, I don't recommend taking any OTAs anyway past BOAF, otherwise the conversion "might not" happen, but there are a lot of people who have taken all OTAs so we'll see what happens with them.
