Nougat battery drain - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answer

Hi,
Am I th only one that is getting this ridiculous battery life. I am barely going over 2 hours of SOT and maybe 8 hours of battery with light/medium use. Clearly something is off. I did FDR and wiped cache.
Any ideas?

Are you using facebook/snapchat? Most likely reason, post screenshot of battery usage or no one will be able to help.

I do use facebook from time to time. I can't post yet unfortunately. Hopefully you can view the image I left a link for underneath my original message.

I use snapchat and facebook disabled. A bit drainy though even after f reset.

No issues here. Seems the same as MM to me. Maybe just a little more than normal. It was bad at first but began settling after a few days.

Few suggestions,
Firstly I did was install battery stats app and check if you can find whats eating batery
If that doesnt help I would say flash firmware with odin including data(Backup before this). After that do an Full Reset and then try.
Since This is complete OS upgrade it will help clean lots of things. I am getting 5-6hrs SOT. All the best

I've had *SIGNIFICANTLY* better battery after disabling the stock FB app and instead using Metal for Facebook, and it has a dark theme!

I had terrible battery life initially as well. So I did a factory reset and...battery life still sucked. I think that was because I allowed Samsung and Google to restore my apps and previous app data. So, I did another factory reset and a completely clean installation of all my apps (no Samsung or Google-assisted restoring of apps). Since then, battery has been back to normal, which for me is about 4 hours of SOT.

Same here. I did a clean app install also and that helped. The only thing I allowed to be restored was my gmail calendar and contacts.

Yeah my upgrade made my phone glitchy and half the battery life I used to get. But on the plus side my phone doesn't run as hot and lock up when downloading large torrents.

Terrible battery life

Hello everyone, i purchased my Nexus 7 and it arrived in the mail 3 days ago. And as with every other Android device ive ever owned, the batter is absolutely terrible. I get about 2hrs on screen time when browing the web and maybe playing an occasional game. Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Or have any way to help? Thanks so much
That is pretty bad. Try a factory reset. Might be something you installed.
I'd hate to do a factory reset cause I just barely got it set up but..I'll try it anyway tonight

Doing a factory reset before installing anything is becoming the gold standard.
Hope it helps you.
I get between 7-9 hours of active use. Sounds like some process is running amok on yours. I didn't factory reset when I bought it either....though I have rooted it since then, but battery life is about the same pre and post root.
You might want to consider a program to monitor battery use to see what's eating it up. Maybe do that before you factory reset it so you don't install the same thing again.

Really? Like as soon as you set up the device, you are suppose to factory reset it? And since im facotry resetting it 3 days into having it, do i have to calibrate the battery again?

System panel is a good app to find what's using your CPU and better batterystats can help find what's keeping your phone from going to deep sleep. An easy way to see if this is the case is go into battery setting and select the first option(history details). Compare the Awake bar with the screen on bar. Those two should be nearly identical if not then you have a rogue app.

have you flashed any kernels or roms? sometimes this makes the tablet report the wrong battery stats for a bit.
did you run the battery down until it turns off and then give it a full charge? sometimes you have more juice than what is being reported. ive been stuck at 1-2% for over an hour before. Most likely its a rogue app though, system panel and better batterystats should find out what app it is. if they dont then it could be that you have a defective battery...
Been on mine continuously for 3 hrs 18 mins and at 60%. Excellent if you ask me. Next step up in battery life would be Transformer series with dock.

Quite the opposite for me; unlike every other Android device I've had (Nexus One, GS2) the battery life is excellent. I watched 720p mkv video on the train yesterday for a good 3 hours, and still had ~70% by the time I got home, from a full charge.
The battery life is excellent, as far as I'm concerned.

Don't think you needed to calibrate the battery to begin with. I usually get fine battery life without doing anything special.
Something must be causing the poor battery on your Nexus, Yesterday after my N7 was fully charged, I watched the movie Thor for 1hr and 54 minutes n and my battery only dropped to 83%.
I'm at 16 hours and 52 minutes with 3 hours and 44 minutes of on screen time, the battery is at 51%

Unless you listen to music for over 5 hours or streaming the songs it shouldnt use that much battery. If you can't find a wakelock with better battery stats then it might just be a bad unit.

Weird Battery Behavior. Any solution? Or time for an RMA?

I have had this phone for about 2 months now and everything has been exceptional with the phone. Have seen people complain about the battery life, however it has been really good as far as my experience is concerned. However since a week I have seen the battery screwing up a lot... A LOT.
I always used to charge my phone daily in night. Plug it in..set an alarm of 3.5 hours (yes it takes 3.5 hours to fully charge from less than 10% stage) wake up..turn charging off..sleep back. Okay, some of u might think it is stupid but can’t risk of leaving it on charge the whole night and burn my phone. Anyhow, so, since a week what I do is I charge my phone whenever I want (read it on a few thread and articles)..be it 50%... 80% or even 92%. I just make sure its 100% whenever I leave home.
But something weird has started happening... The battery percentage keeps on changing.. For instance:
when I unplug it..its 100%.. within minutes of usage it drops to 99..then 98.. then 97 and suddenly it rises back to 100%. (Pics attached)
Sometimes when its on charge and I come to check SMSz and reply them.. battery % suddenly drops.. e.g: if its at 99%... it will suddenly change to 96% in a second and in a minute goes back to 99% .. so on and so forth. And sometimes even when its charging..if it is at 80%, it will suddenly shoot up to 100%. The percentage doesn’t change even after a reboot. Weird, isn’t it?
Now the most weird issue, since yesterday the battery life and dropped to 50% less. I used to get 4 hours OST and now I hardly get 2 hours. During night, the battery used to drop 2% in about 6 to 7 hours and yesterday it dropped 15%. There was this one time when it dropped 9% in 6.5 hours (pics attached). Tried seeing through Wale Lock Detector but there were no Awakes during deep sleep. Too weird :s
I don’t really know where did I phuck up as I haven’t installed any shaddy apps or something. Please advice.
My phone info:
All stock. No root (and not looking). No custom Roms whatsoever.
TL;DR... Battery acts weirdly. Shows inconsistent percentages. Suddenly shoots up. Suddenly Drops. And now the On Screen Time has reduced 50%.
It sounds like it's nothing more than a bug.

Thanks for ur reply. How to figure it out? And measures should be taken? Any suggestions?
this has really kept me worried since a few days.
This is "normal" for the N4, and the most/all of them do it. Unreliable drivers, or a hardware fault, not sure.
Here are other threads about the various battery bugs, but there are many more:

I know I searched many threads before posting and mostly had the Shooting up issue only, when charging.
Anyhow, this normal behavior has reduced my battery life a lot.. which I am not liking .. What to do?

Both my N4's (different H/W revisions) have been doing the 100 to 98 to 100 thing as well since new. Battery life is still excellent for me. An RMA would probably do the same.
Happens with my nexus 4 too. But this hasn't reduced my battery life at all...

You're pretty much stuck with that phone as you only have 15 days to RMA a device, your only option would be to send it into LG for a repair. My battery has acted up like this once so I stopped using the stock charger and it hasn't happened since.

Rebooting might help. Could also be an app that updated that now doesn't play nice. You could try a factory reset just to clear out some crap but I'd back everything up just in case first. Not sure if a factory reset deletes all your user data in memory or not. I only did it once right after I got the phone so can't remember. Hate to lose all your pictures, files, etc. that aren't backed up.

It's normal. The N4 isn't great about showing the exact battery life. In fact, what you see isn't the true percentage, it's an estimation. Don't worry too much about it!

This is a question I can't answer along with any facts. I tried disabling it for 2 days and I noticed the OST reduced from 4 hours to 3.xx hours. May its placebo or something but then I enabled it...thinking if it's not doing any good then it's not doing any harm either.

Hmmm, I didn't know that. But why is that? Any apps or something to show the exact battery percentage left?
Happens to me once in awhile. Do a quick reboot, and if that fixes it, I would not worry too much.
Hmmm..
Yesterday when I woke up in morning.. the battery lost 2% only in 6 hours. I felt SOOOO relieved that my "good battery" is back. But who knew what was to come... today I woke up after 7 hours and the battery lost 15% .
My usage is always the same. I force close all the apps I use daily and turn wifi etc all off. So i doubt if its any app.

KitKat didn't kill battery life. Mine is about the same as it was before KitKat. In about 99.999% of the time an app is to blame. I have a simple but arduous method to find the app that's killing your battery.
I agree the battery has taken a hit. I used to ave about 9hrs of screen on time, now about 6hrs. I also have the chromecast issue. Strange thing is that sometimes the screen doesnt even show up In the battery stats. Sometimes the usage time doesnt change when it shows in battery stats. I am stock, 32gb white US model updated with Kies. I have done many factory resets. I have tried it for 2 days without installing any apps or disabling any samsung bloat, with no change in the tablest behavior.

Kitkat sent my note into fits. Battery life was terribly erratic at first. Dropping 30% in an hour, then suddenly jumping back up by 10%.
I tried factory reset.... nothing changed. Then I used the Battery Callibration app from playstore. Ran it and followed instructions exactly. (Waited til it was charged 100%, then run the program, then completely drain battery, then let it charge continuously back up to 100%).
Go figure............ since then things have calmed down and I am getting the same battery life as on my old Jellybeans note. (I know, because I've got two of these tablets and literally compared them side by side.)
Or, it could also be that after firmware upgrade things need a bit of time to settle down. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I am used to android taking a bit to settle in. After my note 3 updated, it seems like it took a month to get back to my "normal". I hope the tablet does too, just frustrating in the mean time
Mine settled down after about 3 days and several resets. Now the battery seems comparable to pre-KitKat.
I don't think it is kit Kat. I'm running kit Kat and easily see 9 hours of screen on. It is most likely an app you have installed that is doing it.

Then not everyone would then mention that it is not change or improved (in stand-by).
No, normally a app or bad file on the sd-card is killing here the battery. All tools to find this out, are already mentioned here. Good luck.
4.4 in and of itself isn't causing poorer battery life. In fact, owners of other devices are reporting improvements. The Exynos N3 for example. There aren't any battery life issue threads on the Pro forums and they have the same h/w and we're most likely using their 4.4 drivers and kernel. There are threads like this in every device forum when an Android version upgrade is released. It's almost always due to a bad flash or a rogue app or service. That and older apps that haven't been updated in ions and aren't playing well with the new OS. People here have reported shorter charging time and longer battery life. So what's being discussed isn't universal. I'd suggest doing a stock recovery and reviewing older apps and those that aren't developed by known and larger developers.
I have a Shield and S4 too. For every poster raving, there seems an opposite view on battery life and the SD card issue.
The SD issue makes battery life debates moot. Google has an Apple wannabe syndrome. Perhaps they will rebrand as Goople.
You can recalibrate the battery by running it down below 20% then recharging. I have seen it recommended to do this every 30 days or so.
My Note 3 with KitKat started using 20-30% of the battery at night while it was idle. Looked and looked and couldn't find a clue to the problem. Decided to reboot, the next night it was fine, used maybe 2-3%

Abysmal Battery Life

Hey guys,
I've joined the club and bought an Axon 7 A2017G.
In my first 2 days of usage, I noticed I needed to charge the phone at least twice per day.
After reading quite a few threads about this issue, I installed GSam battery monitor. It lists my SOT as 1hr 13 minutes, and battery life at 10 hours.
At turning just about everything off, installing Greenify and applying aggressive doze, I was no longer getting a wakelock.
I have however found that GSam shows that my screen is discharging over twice as much battery power, as compared to having the screen on.
I was wondering if this was normal, and if not, any suggestions in increasing battery life?
Not normal try a reset.
Something keeping the phone awake, haven't used gsam in ages.. betterbatterystats is far superior in helping track down what's keeping it awake but requires root.
You can use this app to access original battery stat. Works very well.

I'll try that next. I've just completed a factory reset, so hopefully that helps out.
I found it quite strange that Screen Off used more power (52%) than Screen on (20%).
GSam didn't report any wakelock, and the phone was in doze quite often.
Seems that the factory reset has done the trick.
Now trickle re-installing apps.
Fingers crossed that battery usage stays relatively normal.

How's the battery performing now?
Mine seems mediocre. After charging overnight I usually need to charge in the evening. I get about 10hrs per charge with 2-2.5hrs SoT. Are you getting better results than this after the FR?
Thanks!

As GSam hasn't gotten all required data yet, I will go off what Android reports.
I have used 30% of my battery in 9 hours, with approximately the screen on for 3 hours. Bear in mind that I've had wifi on for approximately 5 hours with a mixture of screen on and off.
Just having a stab in the dark here, but, two apps that I haven't redownloaded are Swiftkey and Nova Launcher. Instead I installed GBoard and Google Launcher. Don't know if that had mde any difference.
So yes, far better results after the FR

I was a little confused what you meant by B09 but I see you've got the A2017G. I'm on the A2017U so I think my equivalent update is the B29 which is what I'm on. I've got tons of apps to backup so I'm going to try resetting tonight. Think I might unlock the bootloader and consider rooting while I'm at it

I've been using cm13 and sometimes Android system drains too much, so I will go to TWRP and wipe dalvik cache and it greatly improves battery life. Takes 20 minutes, but is great for getting 5.5 hrs sot.

Horrible battery drain on s7 edge nougat. Attached battery status from BetterBatteryS

Hi guys, really need some help on this.
After upgrading to nougat on my Su edge intl ver (exynos) SM-G935FD.
The battery has been horrible. From what I see in BBS it's always awake and running on max CPU state. Attached the ss... Please help me.
I've tried the following:
Clear cache using recovery mode
Cleared permissions
Disable Google play services (causing many other Google apps to fail so I enabled it)
Turning off wifi and location
Using data saver
Using battery optimisation
Using greenify
Tried the above methods solo, or a combination, all which failed to help.
From what I see Samsung pay is causing the problem. How do I solve this? It's an integral part of my life (really convenient). Thanks all in advance!

Well, successfully reverted to older version, looking forward to better battery life. Used Drodviews.com for firmware files and Odin V 3.12

Worth a try...
Try to disable some apps or if your phone is rooted delete them. Clear apps permission or references or wipe factory reset through recovert.

I have tried disabling apps like Facebook, messenger, Instagram, etc but no avail. Permissions method also tried. Reset all settings tried too.
I'm only left with factory data reset which I'm unwilling becaue Samsung cloud doesn't seem to be working properly.
I have the same problem too. I noticed that after the Nougat update my phone started to live twice shorter after recharging (1 day instead of 2). Couple of days ago I installed AccuBattery app which shows me that my phone lost almost 25% of its battery capacity :/ Don't know what to do. I am curious if I can ask for a battery replacement from Samsung service (warranty) or not.

I'm not sure too. I might try soon after I have more free time on my hand.
I tried reset settings and so far BBS doesn't show samsung pay alarm wakelocks anymore. I'm gonna monitor for a while. and see how it goes because I still feel that the battery life is pretty bad...
Well I haven't tried any of the battery monitoring apps, but after the Nougat update my S7E shows me 15 hours and 5 minutes remaining right after unplugging from a wall charger.
well batterys have a capacity, there are number of charge cycle after which the battery doesnt stay healthy and the backup gets short..... After nougat upadate I have noticed battery drains but not that aggressive like yours.. You can factory reset you phone once and chk if samsung pay is still sucking battery...

Not very accurate. It is based on current usage. Use gsam or betterbatterystats to get an accurate read on your battery usage.

It was doing well until I upgraded to nougat. Shall do a FDR and see how it goes again...

yes give it a try..
The latest update also reduced the battery life of my phone. I did a factory reset and things have improved, but still less overall battery life compared to the old firmware, might revert back to it.
Did you try using custom rom?
On rom that i using battery life is amazing
?

you might be needing to root for going back, good to see FDR made things better..

Wow, seriously? I thought reverting was easy as flashing through odin? I used to do that all the time.

That's just bad news :/
It's like ppl developing the os for Samsung are tech illiterate...
Try this. Charge your phone after disabling fast charge. I.e charge it in normal mode.
I have seen that the baterry lasts much longer this way.

It is possible, but might interfere with the rom's cache data and i don't think it will perform better because of that. So a factory reset is usually needed when reverting.

I'm going to try reverting tomorrow, will see if it happens and post here if successful.

My phone has been charged both ways before and the resulting battery life is the same.
