Terrible battery life

Hello everyone, i purchased my Nexus 7 and it arrived in the mail 3 days ago. And as with every other Android device ive ever owned, the batter is absolutely terrible. I get about 2hrs on screen time when browing the web and maybe playing an occasional game. Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Or have any way to help? Thanks so much

That is pretty bad. Try a factory reset. Might be something you installed.

I'd hate to do a factory reset cause I just barely got it set up but..I'll try it anyway tonight

Doing a factory reset before installing anything is becoming the gold standard.
Hope it helps you.

I get between 7-9 hours of active use. Sounds like some process is running amok on yours. I didn't factory reset when I bought it either....though I have rooted it since then, but battery life is about the same pre and post root.
You might want to consider a program to monitor battery use to see what's eating it up. Maybe do that before you factory reset it so you don't install the same thing again.

Really? Like as soon as you set up the device, you are suppose to factory reset it? And since im facotry resetting it 3 days into having it, do i have to calibrate the battery again?

System panel is a good app to find what's using your CPU and better batterystats can help find what's keeping your phone from going to deep sleep. An easy way to see if this is the case is go into battery setting and select the first option(history details). Compare the Awake bar with the screen on bar. Those two should be nearly identical if not then you have a rogue app.

The one I've seen mentioned several times in here is BetterBatteryStats. I just don't want to drop $3.00 on something I don't need. It might help your issue though.

Alright ill try system panel, and i looked at the battery setting and awake and screen on are almost exactly the same.

have you flashed any kernels or roms? sometimes this makes the tablet report the wrong battery stats for a bit.
did you run the battery down until it turns off and then give it a full charge? sometimes you have more juice than what is being reported. ive been stuck at 1-2% for over an hour before. Most likely its a rogue app though, system panel and better batterystats should find out what app it is. if they dont then it could be that you have a defective battery...

Been on mine continuously for 3 hrs 18 mins and at 60%. Excellent if you ask me. Next step up in battery life would be Transformer series with dock.

Quite the opposite for me; unlike every other Android device I've had (Nexus One, GS2) the battery life is excellent. I watched 720p mkv video on the train yesterday for a good 3 hours, and still had ~70% by the time I got home, from a full charge.
The battery life is excellent, as far as I'm concerned.

Don't think you needed to calibrate the battery to begin with. I usually get fine battery life without doing anything special.

Something must be causing the poor battery on your Nexus, Yesterday after my N7 was fully charged, I watched the movie Thor for 1hr and 54 minutes n and my battery only dropped to 83%.

I'm at 16 hours and 52 minutes with 3 hours and 44 minutes of on screen time, the battery is at 51%

My N7 is completely stock and has never been rooted. I also did do a couple charge cycles which didn't seem to help much. And better batterystats has AudioOut_2 at 38% (while I'm playing music) but other than that it doesn't seem to be a rogue app

Download CPU spy from the market to see if the tablet is sleeping properly, and what frequency its constantly running at

Unless you listen to music for over 5 hours or streaming the songs it shouldnt use that much battery. If you can't find a wakelock with better battery stats then it might just be a bad unit.

n00b here, need help with battery issues

Hi there; this is my first post so please go easy on me.
Bought a Nexus 4 which is my first Android device, but the battery life is bugging the hell out of me. Surely the screen should always be at the top, right? I left it to sleep overnight on a full charge to find that it had shot down to 60% when I woke up at 7 this morning.
I haven't rooted or flashed or anything like that, because as I said, I'm an Android virgin. I have location settings off, only Gmail syncing and the usual push notifications here and there. Nothing too fancy or strenuous.
Any help on how I can go around fixing this? I'm a little afraid to rooting/flashing/ROMs etc, because I've no clue what works best.

If your saying you left the screen on over night, meaning the phone never went into deep sleep.. If you slept for let's say 6 hours and the phones screen was on for that whole time it's normal that it went down to sixty percent battery.
Maybe I'm understanding your post wrong? Btw I cannot see the picture you posted.

Turn off mobile data and lower the screen brightness to 0 during the day. Also disable WiFi when you're sleeping. I also make sure all apps are closed using the app manager button on the far right.
Mine's been fine following this logic.

This is NOT the answer. His battery in the image has dropped 7%. If he hasn't used the screen much it is perfectly understandable that screen might not be a large percentage of that 7%. As he uses the phone more screen will use a larger percentage of his battery and Android OS will use less.
If he gets to the point where the screen is on for an hour or two and the percentages are still like this then yes there is a problem.

My android system has never been that high, regardless if I used the phone for 10 minutes or 10 seconds , or not at all.

Actually No the "Screen" should not always be at the top of the stat list. If you use the phone more than it idles, then yes... but if you are like me, mine says "Phone Idle: 20%" (which is on top) and "Screen" is 4th on the list with 12% (Wi-Fi and Cell standby above it) [this is my personal phone, and I mostly use my work phone. hence the high Idle & standby]
I was having an issue with my phone running out of battery, with very little usage from it. I mean very little, I might make 2 calls from it each day, and respond to an email now and then. I found that an App was preventing my Screen from going into "Deep Sleep" or even "Sleeping" possibly. So I uninstalled all apps (well I only had like 4 additional apps installed), except for 2 that I need (Google Voice & Drive). Powered off the phone, charged it fully, then powered back on. Its been running on the same charge for 24+hrs now and reads 68% battery remaining.
So check the apps you have installed, some use background data, and might be causing problems...

And your phone is the definitive guide for what Android OS usage is? Maybe his phone woke up those services for a period of time longer than normal.
The answer of "lol looks wrong root and install kernel" is terrible advice when so little information is given.

A longer battery graph would help a lot. If yuppy want top search XDA there is a free app called better battery stats that will help you diagnose if something is running in the background eating battery or even if your phone I'd properly entering deep sleep.

See now it is much easier to see that you actually do have a problem and what it is. You have the wakelock problem as you can see from Better Battery Stats which falls under Android OS on the other screen. It also appears that you have somewhat weak signal which could cause the wakelock to drain battery even more. There's not much you can do about that wake lock, some kernels have patches for it but those have their own issues as well.

Could I just install any kernel on stock android and be OK with it? As I've said I've no idea what's best for me; just something nice and clean that doesn't have issues like this. I live onsite where I work so my WiFi is pretty much on all the time if that helps in anyway whatsoever
I'm gonna let it run down completely tonight and charge it, but I don't expect it to help much.

I never told him to install a kernel. The advice I gave is to do a reset then I asked if he was rooted or running a custom rom or kernel because that might of been the problem.

Fully charged overnight, battery still sinking like a ship. 45 minutes and I'm already down to 94% already!
Idiot question; will installing a kernel just solve this? For now as a new guy I'd like to keep it as stock as possible before fiddling with it.

The battery on the n4 seems horrible.
I'm completely stock I just got my phone yesterday, I charged it to 100% now its at 64% battery with only 47 minutes of screen on time.
on the s3 I would be around 83% with 47 minutes of screen on time.
I'm gonna unlock the boot loader and root soon and try Franco kernel I've been reading good things about it.

The battery life on the stock kernel isn't great because the CPU management isn't optimized well. It ramps up the CPU (frequency, number of active cores...) very easily and keeps it there long, which removes the occasional lag but sucks more battery. Flashing a more battery friendly kernel would definitely help you if that is the root of your battery issues and not a badly coded app.
Franco's kernel is a very popular one, and very battery friendly compared to stock (and that doesn't mean you lose performance). It is the one I'm currently using. Most people report of screen on times of 4 or 5 hours. With not so heavy usage and wifi (not 3g) I can also pass 5 hrs.
To install a kernel you need to unlock your boot loader and install a custom recovery. No need to root, but.. why not since you're at it
You can try different kernels with the stock ROM. You don't necessarily need a custom ROM. Just be careful to read the dev's OP and instructions, and definitely not to flash a kernel for another device.
Also another thing that reduces battery is your mobile data, if there are a lot of programs that sync on the background. You can use a program that turns off your mobile data when your screen is off and switch it back on just for a sync every xx minutes. Juice Defender is such app, though I like to use Tasker for that. If you use Tasker and are interested in that project, ask or send me a pm. It works great.

Looking for advice regarding my battery life after 4.2.2.

Hey I've searched for help on the subject all over and. I'm not seeing anyone with this problem, on the contrary everyone seems to be doing better.
Anyway I got the OTA update to 4.2.2 from the. General forum a few days ago and flashed it without much consequence and everything seemed fine. I reaquired my root but I have noticed my battery is losing charge way too fast doing light browsing and use.
Checking battery use I got 2 hours of screen time with 30% of the battery and again this has been simply browsing sites with pure text. As I'm writing this it went from 70% to 68%
To list a few key things that have happened that might be important and I'm hoping anybody can help or give advice.
1) I stupidly forgot to wipe cache and dalvik before and after flashing the update, when I remembered I went to recovery and did this
2) I rerooted
3) On Friday I fell asleep using it and when I woke up it was completely drained, honestly I don't even remembered what I was doing cause I had a bit too much wine but I think I was playing an emulator and when I woke up it wouldn't even turn on so I charged it back to 100%
As I write this now I think back and problem seems to have started then.
I tried re flashing a backup, which didn't help and I flashed franco kernel reading it gave good battery.
My last idea is simply reverting back to stock and see if it helps but before that I wanted to check some opinions or advice here.
PS I have already used BBS and its finding nothing wrong in wakelocks or use (except something called AudioOut2)
As I finish this im down to 66%, definitely not normal.
Any help is appreciated.

Did you at some point let it drain completely to 0% after updating to 4.2.2?
If nobody has any idea ill just go back to stock and report results.

Well if anybody has a similar issue or cares, going back to stock seems to have fixed the issue. Regardless I did some light testing on the battery. It shows marginal better perfomance on 4.2.2
By switching Kernel there was no change it seems but then again the test only covered two activities perhaps with further comparissons better results would be gotten.
But long story short if anybody has this problem apparently going back to stock is the way to go.
I'll keep a careful eye on the battery and gauge on regular use and if it happens again have a better idea of what caused it.

Its a program that's running or not completely shutting down.
Torrent was my issue. Uninstalled rebooted and then reinstalled.
My battery life is good now.all day and still over 80%.

Well I have encountered a completely new problem lately.
In the last week this has happened 3-4 times. I leave it charging or simply on deep sleep for a while and when I try to turn it on it won't, I'm not sure if its shutting down since when I plugged it in (thinking battery had drained) not battery charging animation came up, instead I left the power button pressed and it came up with whatever charge it had.
Not sure if its a side effect of the original problem of the battery discharge or something to do with torrent clients as 3 of the total times it has happened I was downloading something and left it running.
Not sure what to do at this point since I find no info on this or it happening to anybody else. What I find are things like it not charging etc which really arent my issues.
I will avoid using torrents on it for a few days and see if it happens again, if it does I will seriously have to consider contacting Google or Asus since this device doesn't even have 90 days in my possession yet.

If anyone is following this (really just posting here to help anybody who finds the same problem and as a sort of journal) I found this post on the kernel im running thread

Somebody replied to that post stating its a 4.2.x problem
It could also be a kernel problem with torrents as further down the posts another person complains about the same happening when using a bittorrent client
I'll post with whatever I find out.

Hi Chaps, Since my upgrade to 4.2.2 I thought the battery life was great. It stayed at 100% for ages and when I was streaming music for a few of hours and the battery only went to 96%. Superb I thought..
But, yes there is a but. My N7 now shuts down when the battery is at 32% and I need to charge it to get it to reboot as it is well drained. Is it possible to zero the battery indicator or recalibrate it for an accurate reading? TATA R.

Battery calibration, which should be done rarely, is merely a matter of putting your device through one complete charge/discharge cycle. Don't waste your time with battery calibration apps, as they are 100% snake oil. Likewise, you can disregard any misinformation about wiping battery stats, as that has absolutely no bearing on battery charge indication.
Try unplugging your battery for a few minutes, and then plug it back in, ensuring that the connector is firmly seated.

Getting pissed off here. N7 shuts down at 42% now. WTF. Is this a 4.2.2 problem? If so how do I revert back to an earlier version?

I am seeing reduced battery life on 4.2.2...
I used to be able to go all day on a charge. Now I can't make it through the evening ...
I know that is subjective as I didn't indicate my prior usage compared to my current usage pattern.
But my perception is that battery life has degraded ...
As an aside, I noticed that an el-cheapo IKEA power strip didn't provide enough juice to keep the battery from draining further while using it when plugged in...
It plugged in at 20% and kept using the N7... awhile later I was in the mid-teens.
I don't use that power strip any longer....

Very Strange Battery Stats - Help Appreciated

I've just flashed PA latest build (dirty) and my battery stats are pretty messed up, apparently Bluetooth was the biggest drain on my phone, 57%, and it was on for nearly 50 days.
I don't use Bluetooth and obviously a battery lasting 50 days is nonsense.
I've had a search and found people experiencing high drain from some services, or reporting 100% charge as soon as plugged in, but can't find anything resembling my problem.
Is there a way of resetting these stats without having to do a full wipe. I tried charging to 100% but they remain.

Waste of time. Just charge your phone to full and battery stats are wiped.

Thanks for replies. I did a charge last night but the stats remain. I probably didn't charge to 100% just almost 100%.
I find that it can take up to 30 minutes to go from 99% to 100%. I will leave it charging overnight and hopefully that will sort it
That Bluetooth figure just seems weird, and I have no idea where it came from??

Lol I had this too when I dirt flashed to pa. Its alright just a bug. Its all good lol. I wouldn't start a thread on it but yes.

Seriously though it's a bit strange that we both got that, could these be the stats of the ROM builder and they got left in somehow?? I know the 15th June version wasn't official and just put out for feedback. Apart from the battery thing it's awesome

Probably, but I guess its just derp. Anyways running Franco kernel and PA on this and get 5.5 hrs of sot with YouTube and music playing all the time xda browsing Facebook and mostly on WiFi but on 3g when WiFi signal is lost when I go outside. Auto brightness on and screen does take up juice outside but I believe I could get 7 or 6 hrs if I played with settings, underclocked, minimum brightness etc...

Kitkat killed battery life

Kitkat killed battery life. Used to be great, now it sucks.

KitKat didn't kill battery life. Mine is about the same as it was before KitKat. In about 99.999% of the time an app is to blame. I have a simple but arduous method to find the app that's killing your battery.

I agree the battery has taken a hit. I used to ave about 9hrs of screen on time, now about 6hrs. I also have the chromecast issue. Strange thing is that sometimes the screen doesnt even show up In the battery stats. Sometimes the usage time doesnt change when it shows in battery stats. I am stock, 32gb white US model updated with Kies. I have done many factory resets. I have tried it for 2 days without installing any apps or disabling any samsung bloat, with no change in the tablest behavior.

Kitkat sent my note into fits. Battery life was terribly erratic at first. Dropping 30% in an hour, then suddenly jumping back up by 10%.
I tried factory reset.... nothing changed. Then I used the Battery Callibration app from playstore. Ran it and followed instructions exactly. (Waited til it was charged 100%, then run the program, then completely drain battery, then let it charge continuously back up to 100%).
Go figure............ since then things have calmed down and I am getting the same battery life as on my old Jellybeans note. (I know, because I've got two of these tablets and literally compared them side by side.)
Or, it could also be that after firmware upgrade things need a bit of time to settle down. Hope this helps.

Kitkat sent my note into fits. Battery life was terribly erratic at first. Dropping 30% in an hour, then suddenly jumping back up by 10%.
I tried factory reset.... nothing changed. Then I used the Battery Callibration app from playstore. Ran it and followed instructions exactly. (Waited til it was charged 100%, then run the program, then completely drain battery, then let it charge continuously back up to 100%).
Go figure............ since then things have calmed down and I am getting the same battery life as on my old Jellybeans note. (I know, because I've got two of these tablets and literally compared them side by side.)
Or, it could also be that after firmware upgrade things need a bit of time to settle down. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I am used to android taking a bit to settle in. After my note 3 updated, it seems like it took a month to get back to my "normal". I hope the tablet does too, just frustrating in the mean time

Mine settled down after about 3 days and several resets. Now the battery seems comparable to pre-KitKat.

I don't think it is kit Kat. I'm running kit Kat and easily see 9 hours of screen on. It is most likely an app you have installed that is doing it.

Then not everyone would then mention that it is not change or improved (in stand-by).
No, normally a app or bad file on the sd-card is killing here the battery. All tools to find this out, are already mentioned here. Good luck.

4.4 in and of itself isn't causing poorer battery life. In fact, owners of other devices are reporting improvements. The Exynos N3 for example. There aren't any battery life issue threads on the Pro forums and they have the same h/w and we're most likely using their 4.4 drivers and kernel. There are threads like this in every device forum when an Android version upgrade is released. It's almost always due to a bad flash or a rogue app or service. That and older apps that haven't been updated in ions and aren't playing well with the new OS. People here have reported shorter charging time and longer battery life. So what's being discussed isn't universal. I'd suggest doing a stock recovery and reviewing older apps and those that aren't developed by known and larger developers.

I have a Shield and S4 too. For every poster raving, there seems an opposite view on battery life and the SD card issue.
The SD issue makes battery life debates moot. Google has an Apple wannabe syndrome. Perhaps they will rebrand as Goople.

You can recalibrate the battery by running it down below 20% then recharging. I have seen it recommended to do this every 30 days or so.
My Note 3 with KitKat started using 20-30% of the battery at night while it was idle. Looked and looked and couldn't find a clue to the problem. Decided to reboot, the next night it was fine, used maybe 2-3%

Agree and disagree!
I did have charging problem and battery drain right after KK update. I have to do the Factory Data Reset. Luckily my tablet is back to normal if not better. I did spend sometime go thru all setting. So I managed to get 4 hrs of screen time with moderate use and I still have about 59% of battery.
So I say kk is good or better then jellybean

I updated a couple days ago and since then my battery just sucks. It just went from 100% to 29% in 2 hours just using Youtube. It can't be right. Definitely it's the upgrade!!
I loved my Note 10.1 2014 out the box that I decided not to root. So it's factory stock and suck very bad.
If it's a bad app I can find it. It worked flawlessly before the upgrade.

Factory reset and see if it still happens. A dirty flash can do weird stuff...

Yeah, im not getting great battery life either since this update. I just reset the tablet in the hope of tracking down what's the issue.
Troubling, since battery life was so great previously.
