Having cut the cord in the middle of last year I've been running a Fire TV to for some time but haven't been completely satisfied. I am more involved with the Google ecosystem than the Amazon ecosystem using Google Play Music and the Play Store and the like.
My device will be hardwired like everything else in my entertainment center and had a few questions.
1. I root most everything that I buy Android but I did not on my Amazon Fire TV 2. Why would I want to root the shield Pro?
2. This will be my first Shield device, any suggestions or tricks that I should know? I am reading through this forum but I figured beginner's tips for a long time Android User might be helpful.
3. I haven't been able to find anything out about the Google Assistant update coming out yet. Has anyone heard an approximate date for it?
4. Same as number three but about the Samsung SmartThings dongle?
Thanks everybody.
Some threads I would recommend you read up on might be, (or cover).
SSD Migration. Not so much for replacing the SSHD with a SSD, but to make a backup of it! This will likely prove to be one of the smartest things you could do especially if you plan on rooting. In case you ever run into Problems.
Two rooting on the Shield is a kind of miss the only benefit I ever got from it was being able to add Unofficial Channels inside Plex. The biggest reason for me to want to root anything would be to use AdAway. Now I guessing it's the way AndroidTV is setup over normal Android. But, FWIW AdAway just does not do its job of blocking Ads on a sideloaded Chrome Browser at all.
Again depending on which side of the curve you are on with 4k UHD, you will have problems loading up TWRP on the Shield TV. At least this is the case with most reports here, and myself included.
Continuing you could just replace the stock recovery with TWRP, and that would work.. 'Till you get hit with an OTA Update where it's expecting to use the Stock Recovery, and will eventually loop itself without it. If you found yourself with a Shield in late January in that situation. You'd have noted that nVIDIA were lax to release a working v5.x Recovery Image. So you used the one from v3.3.0, and now your bricked!
This is why I suggest you really dig into the SSD Migration Thread(s), in Order to create a clone image of the local HDD first.
I would also add that you probably should ONLY ever fastboot boot recovery TWRP-*.img, and NEVER! fastboot flash recovery TWRP-*.img
But, unless you need Unofficial Channels on Plex, and theres nothing there that isn't already on Kodi. There doesn't seem to be any real compelling reason to root the Shield. And in all fairness I regret having done it now.
That's about 110% of what I was looking for. Thank you.

I was having an ongoing issue with the audio stuttering from time to time with the NP. I read on another forum that the fix was to get the rma handled from asus. Before I shipped it back though, on a whim I plugged it into my monitor. And to my shock no stutter. So it seems to me that my TV has a hard time decoding the PCM. Has anyone had any similar issues? Has anyone had any luck getting a USB DAC to work with this thing? I have one that plug and plays with multiple tabs and phones(running 4.4 and 5) but it won't work on here. I did try the Unleashed kernel, but no dice. The next course would be to try the rom that is on this forum. The only problem with that (if it does what I need it to do) I'm capped at devices for Google All Access.
Google claims to have fixed this bug in Android 5.1. We just need a damn image or build of it for our device.

That's something at least. I'll hold out for that.
Side note: Lollirock would stop playing audio when the usb dac was plugged in, but everything kind of just froze up forcing a reboot. So no dice
I've called ASUS and got no where. They said they've never heard of the issue and might investigate it. I didn't purchase it from the Play Store so I had to call ASUS. They aren't to bad when it comes to tech support.
Hi All,
Just got my hands on a couple devices (some kitkat, some lollipop). They are all currently not rooted.
I see there is a lot of support for this device, so my question is, what should I do to these devices?
1) Downgrade them all, root them, and update them to lineage os? Is this relatively easy?
2) Can I upgrade them all to lollipop somehow, and then root?
3) What other options are out there, and what do you guys thinks is the best way to take this?
Cheers
Downgrade root and LOS/Candy7
You'll lose ir blaster and some other features though. What do you plan to use these tablets for?
I'm open to suggestions
I happen to have one of them (using it to post this reply) and I've been experimenting with it since the day I got it home. While it is a nice enough screen, the underlying hardware is showing how quickly things become dated.
TWRP was the first priority to get on this tablet, and it's currently still doing its thing as of today. I've tried most of the ROMs I could find as time has passed, and as of today I'm running Candy5. It feels better on this device than a Nougat based ROM (i.e. Lineage 14.1). It seems more responsive, less laggy, and in general just seems to run much more smoothly. I do find myself missing some of the features from Nougat (using an SD card as internal storage is a big headliner there)...but at least to me this device has its hands full trying to run Nougat.
I do find myself wishing my IR blaster worked and have been thinking of looking for a nice, lightweight ROM that had all the hardware working...well, most of it anyway. (IR Blaster and WiFi/Bluetooth for sure) I'd actually like to lose the cellular radio - or be able to disable it completely...and use SD cards as internal, without separate apps.
Anyone have any suggestions as to a ROM that fits this description? I've heard of a miniature version of Oreo - is it actually lightweight or is it gimmick?
I was wondering if there is a way to use the camera on my Fire HD 10 with Alexa show mode. I am mainly thinking along the lines of having the camera available for drop in calls to my other Alexa devices and possibly to use as a security camera. I just got off the phone with Amazon and they said no one has asked them this question before and that the feature is not available. They said they would pass along the idea to their developers for possible use in a future update. So, I am just wondering if anyone else has thought of this and if there may be a work around for now. Thanks in advance.
So I've had this problem for a couple/few years already where an update from either android or netflix caused the Widevine certification to read as L1 for Netflix specifically. It says version 15.0.. L3 as opposed to the L1 it's supposed to have, DRM INFO says i have L1 ver 14.0...
I previously worked around this issue with a modded Netflix install that half works but even then sometimes the quality will still drop even though the connection can more than handle the stream. I was hoping that after so much time has passed this issue had been resolved by either party (mainly because at one point, another update had left me without netflix on my phone for almost a year and this was before the L1/L3 fiasco) but no such luck.
In the past I've steered clear of rooting the phone, mainly because everytime i try to get into the spirit of things I either have a hard time finding the files needed or the guides I'm pointed towards seem like details to build a nuke.
I'm hoping i can fix this, and I'm willing to bite the bullet and try to root this phone if needed. Any help would be appreciated.
I have spent an insane number of hours trying to figure this out with no luck, please help me.
My mom has a Fire 7 tablet, 9th generation with Google Play installed. I got her a Fire 10, 9th generation tablet. I cannot figure out how to back up her game data and install it on the Fire 10.
I've tried Helium with no success. I tried a few other things as well. The Helium backup seemed to work, except that when the game was started, I was on level 1 instead of 12. So it appeared to work, but didn't.
This was supposed to be a birthday present a month ago, but obviously I couldn't give it to her like this. Then it was supposed to be a Christmas present, but again, I couldn't really give it to her.
Maybe try setting the google account to back up application data?
I had the same problem trying to transfer a game to a new phone. I was on level 850 and didn't want to start over again. I tried several different approaches that didn't work so finally contacted the game's manufacturer. They sent me a link with instructions and it worked like magic. Perhaps that would work for you as well. Sometimes simple is better.
