Wi-Fi not working anymore, weirdest problem ever! - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I promise, this is not one of those "reset your access point" or "clean your networking settings" question.
Some background: the phone is not rooted, using stock Android with latest OTA update, locked and never been played with. This problem happened all the sudden with no major changes or accidental drops. Bluetooth and Mobile Data works fine, I can receive and makes phone calls too.
The Problem: the phone can discover available access points and SSIDs, connect to them, performs authentication also, but it fails to get an IP. Android tries to get an IP up to 5 times by issuing a DHCP discovery, eventually failing with the message "IP configuration error"
Why is it weird? because I tried all of the following:
- Tried 4 different access points, 4 different brands, configuration and setup, they all produced the same result of "IP configuration error"
- Tried configuring the phone with a Static IP address, that gave me the error "Connected, no internet".
- Performed a "Factory Data reset", no go.
- Flashed the latest 7.1.1 factory image from Google "angler-n4f26i", no go.
- Flashed the first 7.0 factory image from Google "angler-nbd91k", no go.
- Flashed the first 6.0 factory image from Google "angler-mda89d", no go.
- Tried to use the Backup and Rest -> Network Settings Rest, no go.
- Tried to use the Developer Options -> Use legacy DHCP client, no go.
- Enabled tethering on the phone and tried to connect my laptop to it, my laptop can discover the SSID network on the phone, connect to it, perform authentication, but also fails to get an IP address.
At this point I'm running out of options and dunno what to try next, any lead or recommendation from you guys would be really appreciated. RMA is very hard, nearly impossible to perform where I live "Middle East" :/
Help?

How were you flashing? Sideloading OTA images, or unlocked bootloader, full factory image flashing?
On first boot after clean install, exactly what happens when prompted for your Wi-Fi connection? If it fails there, no point in going further into the OS.
Have you tried using a custom kernel like Franco or EX Kernel that handle the Wi-Fi? (To rectify the problem, not what caused it)
Have you tried formatting modem partition and flashing to the latest radio? (v03.78)

Let me try to answer one by one:
How were you flashing? Sideloading OTA images, or unlocked bootloader, full factory image flashing?
I've gone the unlocked boot loader full factory image way. all my images were downloaded from: https://developers.google.com/android/images#angler
On first boot after clean install, exactly what happens when prompted for your Wi-Fi connection? If it fails there, no point in going further into the OS.
It shows a full list of available access points, I select my SSID and provide a password, the authentication succeeds and the phone proceeds to enable the DHCPClient, it broadcasts a request over wireless but never gets an IP, it tried the process again up to 5 times eventually failing with the error message "IP Configuration Error", configuring an IP address gives the error message "No Internet Connection". I've been able to test this today using a 4th access point brand (tried TP-Link, Cisco, Huawei, ZTE), I'm 100% sure that there's nothing wrong with the access points, as everything else I have works just fine (PS4, laptop, wife's mobile, tablet... etc)
Have you tried using a custom kernel like Franco or EX Kernel that handle the Wi-Fi? (To rectify the problem, not what caused it)
I haven't, but will be doing so today or tomorrow and will be reporting back my results. this is a new lead to follow.
Have you tried formatting modem partition and flashing to the latest radio? (v03.78)
This was done in part of the full image flash, I've tried different full images as stated in my original post, so basically I've had 1.29, 3.72, 3.78 and even the latest 3.79 but those didn't work, do you suggest to do the radio image alone? after performing the full image flash?

Yeah, it was more just formatting and flashing the radio separately, but I'm pretty sure the kernel is handling WiFi on our device. Try one of the custom kernels.... you may have a hardware issue. Good luck.

If you have a main modem then access point internet set-up try doing the following steps:
1.) Forget the Wi-Fi network on your phone. Afterwards enable Airplane mode.
2.) Next turn-off your AP and allow 10 seconds to pass.
3.) Then turn-off your main modem and allow 30 seconds to pass.
4.) Once the alloted time has passed sequentially power back on your equipment. So power back on your main modem, allow another 30 seconds, then power back your AP.
5.) Give the AP another 30 seconds after which disable airplane mode, enable Wi-fi then re-attempt to connect.
*I just wanted you to give those steps a shot juat to eliminate the main modem as a possible factor (in case you have such set-up). Your router/AP is clearly not causing the issue so at this point the problem could either be caused by:
A.) A modem glitch preventing an IP to be handed to your phone when it's MAC address is detected.
B.) Or possibly an issue with the phone's Wi-fi hardware.

I've been able to install Lineage OS with EX kernel, and I can confirm that my wireless chip is to blame. I ran every possible combination/setup I could think of that involves software, I keep having the same result... sooo.... yup, dead piece of a: https://www.broadcom.com/products/wireless/wireless-lan-bluetooth/bcm4358

Thanks for the suggestion, but this didn't work. I've been able to do an extra step and test connectivity using 4 different types of access points / modems, even using tethering from different mobiles that was acting as access points. it's no good.
Looks like the only option left is to do a repair with one of the local shops, hopefully they'll know what a Nexus is and how to handle it (it's not officially sold here yet), according to iFixIt, it'll be very hard to do so: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+6P+Teardown/51660
Thanks for all the help everyone, really appreciated.

Sorry to hear. This is the first time I've heard of Wi-Fi failing due to a hardware issue. I doubt it is repairable. It may be located on the motherboard, which although readily available is not really economical to replace. May be the end of the road. This appears to be one more blot on Huawei's QA/QC.

Exactly my thought. Never had such a case in my life, and I'm a tier 3 support engineer in network infrastructures. go figure!
To add even more light into the case, I've ran a packet sniffer in my LAN to check if the mobile is performing a DORA against the DHCP service in my network, but nope, there is no trace for it's MAC address or any broadcast messages from the mobile.
This is the second Nexus that I own and have failed within a year of its life span (previously a Nexus 5 owner, charging station at phone died). I think I'm going to give OnePlus a try very soon.

personally i found it easier to statically assign the IP configuration information for the 2 networks I use, plus my version wasn't listed for the patch anyway. I also renamed the files in /data/misc/dhcp/ to correct the issue where stuck on assigning IP address in wireless connection (where it basically repeatedly attempts to get an IP address)
*edit*
Here you go BatPenguin. This is the PDF file that comes with the zip for how to properly install the patch

I was beat to it lol.

Omg I'm an idiot. I didn't even see that my version isn't even listed -_-
So thenfact I installed it shouldn't mess my tab up right? Ugh such an idiot.
*edit* I just uninstalled the patch lol. No sense in keeping it if its not for my device anyway. I keep forgetting my tab is not my computer and downloads, zips, etc should be done there first.
........................................
I got the 3.1 OTA update today. Could not connect to WiFi after installation. Did the paperclip reset routine a few times but no luck.
Considered installing this patch but noticed it was not for my build and had second thoughts. But I installed it anyway and after a reboot, my WiFi was working again.
I'm guessing that Acer's list of supported builds is not all-inclusive. If your Wifi stopped working after the HC 3.1 update try using the patch posted above.
Well, I'm in the boat as many of you. The download came in at just after midnight local and after 90% of the install messed up the wifi. I downloaded the patch and tried to install it multiple times with no change in the ability to connect. The tab will see all the networks in my area but it gets into a loop cycle trying to connect and after a minute or so will disable the wifi. I even went so far as to go through the factory reset process and install the patch afterwards with no luck.
At this point it's nothing more than a fancy color reader. Is there a way to re-flash the entire OS with the original Acer version? I have been rooted but don't have a desire to flash any custom ROMs yet. If this is not possible it'll have to go back to Acer and who knows how long that will take....just in time for my trip next month.
Just to err on the safe side it is a US tablet living the Middle East, not that it should matter.
There are plenty of stock ROM's in the dev section you can flash with. Their threads are clearly labelled as such.
Well, I went through the level 1 gauntlet at Acer and they have passed me off to a level 2. I don't have high expectations but it will be a PITA to call considering my hours and my location.

I already have the update "Acer_A500_4.010.40_COM_GEN1" showing for download.
Does this one include the wifi fix?
(I have no interest in updating from 3.01 to 3.1 becasue of the wifi problem, so if it's not fixed, I'll stay as I am.)
Yes, it does.
Thanks for that - I might let it update now..

fist of all this is not the problem that's supposed to be fixed by the patch. your problem is more simple, check or reenter the wifi password. because it is normal for wifi connection to be removed if it cannot connect to it because of the luck of the password. also make sure your router is supporting wpa/tsk or wpa2/tsk.
because i think that has changed since 3.01 wich also supported WEP, which might not be the case anymore.
the problem people have is that the dhcp is not working after the password is entered. i.e. it dispalys waiting for IP, and never gets it, but it does not remove any networks from the list.
I've been down that path and reentered the password at least a half a dozen times. Up until the most recent update that was pushed was 90% installed and then stalled out out I have had no issues on this network or others.
Your second statement more closely matches the issue that I'm having.
Not happy with Acer. Those of us who use this forum may be able to apply patches to correct problems caused by their upgrades, but think how many people have lost all connectivity when they applied the 3.1 update.
How is it possible that Acer, which has been working on update issues for a month or more, pushes an update that takes out our wireless connection? And why do the users have to assume the burden of solving the problem, locating the patch and applying it?
Doesn't the company test their upgrade before pushing it out? Were they not aware of the havoc it caused?
I like my tablet a lot, but the Acer customer experience is frustrating and hard to understand.
I was able to speak with Karen a level 2 tech rep and we went through a few easy steps and it seems ot have fixed my issue.
begin with the tablet turned off
- press and hold the volume up button (I assume it must be in landscape because she stated it was the button closest the rotation lock)
- press and hold the power button until the light comes on, continue holding the volume button
- as soon as the tablet vibrates begin flipping the rotation lock back and forth as quickly as you can until you see small words in the upper left corner. I had to do this twice because I didn't flip it fast enough.
- once the words appear (erasing cache and such) you can stop switching the rotation lock and let off the volume button.
- It will do its thing and reboot to the original home screen
I had already tried a factory reset but she made it sound as though this would completely reset the tablet and wipe everything. At any rate it seems to have worked. I'm going to try and re-download 4.010.10, root it, re-install Titanium Pro and re-install all my apps and I'm back in business
Give it a try and see if it works.

Missing "HotSpot & Tethering" / Hotspot not functioning

So, I'm having a particularly strange issue here. I recently got this Sprint Note 4 and activated it. However, there appears to be a missing option under settings. Tethering and Hotspot is straight up gone. To clarify, I have pictures attached showing the item listing, and one without it.
Clarifications of troubleshooting I've tried so far:
I have attempted a factory reset of the device
I have attempted to do a reset with ##72786#
I have tried updating Profile, PRL,
I am using a DeOdexed PH4 6.0.1 ROM. I have tried reflashing per instruction (triple wiping Cache, Dalvik, Internal, System, etc)
I have tried flashing a STOCK OTA PH4 ROM to see if it would show up there. It does not.
I called Sprint technical support to reprovision my phone. They pushed out a a reprovisioning that I accepted. No change.
At one point, Wanam/Xposed was attempted to be installed. I checked for system/csc/features.xml. It was not there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/development/rom-stock-ph4-bloated-deodexed-t3473610/ is the custom ROM i'm using. However, it doesn't seem like a ROM specific issue.
If I use Activity Launcher or itools, i can access the actual wifi hotspot MENU (the toggle off and on, LAN settings, etc). I can enable it and the system will broadcast the SSID. However, if I try connecting to it, no devices are able to successfully connect.
here is the Activity Launcher referenced, for other readers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66713935&postcount=7
but anyways, regarding devices not being able to connect, sometimes the data connectivity (through hotspot only, not for the entire phone) will go dead if you don't start using it immediately after first unlocking and activating tether.
in my experiences, if you keep data alive by immediately connecting a device after your first time turning tether on (after unlock) by downloading a large file or somewhat frequently reloading web pages (on the connected device!) -- anything that will keep data sending and receiving -- it will stick, and the data service to connected device issues will stop.
it's not foolproof, it's not a silver bullet, but this is the method to the madness I have learned and worked for me many times when changing roms and even getting new phones.
it's been a couple months since I had to fiddle with it last, so I can't remember if it was necessary to re-unlock after a failed attempt at keeping data alive. you might only have to toggle data off then back on for another attempt.
when I had the problem of connected devices losing internet access, it would only happen after having worked for a few seconds to a few minutes. it'd work then abruptly stop, and this is my "fix"
My issue seems more in line with the devuces failing to validate to begin with. Not losing connection.
I had something like this before, I vaguely recall it having to do with using Odin vs. OTA stock. So did you try wiping your phone completely then Odin the stock PH4 tar, or did you OTA to PH4?

The very very very first time, I OTA'd to PH4. The next two tries were wiping completely and using the PH4 tar file. So both methods have been attempted.
I was referring to loss of internet connection, not signal related. I thought that was clear, sorry

I thought you meant loss of internet connection in the sense of anti-tether provisioning from Sprint. My phone's LTE never goes down (and I am able to still browse the internet from the mobile device while tethering).
The connected devices never successfully "connect". They aren't listed as connected devices under the mobile hotspot. My other Android phone (without mobile data) is forever connecting. My macbook claims it has an assigned IP but is "unable to access the internet". So I'm not sure what the hell is going on with that.
At this point, I have restored my Note 3 as my active device until I get this resolved. I'm willing to re-write everything down to the barest metal I can.
Somebody in another topic mentioned something about PIT. I don't know anything about that sort of thing. My knowledge extends about as far as installing recovery and flashing ROMs.
I'm confident I could follow procedure, but could use a guiding hand on where to go from here.
sounds like the tether unlock method you used was not done correctly, whether by whoever made it or yourself
method 2 in Galaxy Tools should work just fine. there are several threads in the Sprint note 4 seconds that contain the apk or ppl that will pm it to you. the author discontinued the public/free version of the app and now chargers $35+ per person for a 1 time use lol once you get a copy of the free one, make copies and store on multiple devices forever.
it's primarily for Sprint Sammy devices, so you prob won't see much if anything about it here in the collective note 4 forum.
may work on some boost or even tmo, but yeah.
edit:
you'll want either 3.1.5, easy install n msl read broken on MM and less features
or 3.1.8, troublesome install with msl read working but unreliably, more features.

Just a thought and question: when you Odin stock tar to recover from this condition, are you using the rooted extended power menu to boot to download mode? Or, do you prevent the auto reboot of stock tar flash with Odin options?
A noted developer, @idone from Galaxy Tool app, once shared with me that rooted shortcut or preventing auto reboot can prevent the normal flash of Odin booting to recovery momentarily to set csc options. csc options flashed may not restore on any boots if you skip that initial auto boot.
The suggested method is to power down and pull battery for 30 seconds our more before reinserting battery and manually booting to downloaded mode. And do not uncheck auto reboot or pull battery but use Odin defaults and let phone auto boot. Doing this allows the phone to boot into recovery to do its thing briefly before booting system. I usually just let it perform the setup wizard and didn't activation just in case.
I rarely do the the data profile update or PRL because if letting the phone setup this way and phone prompts to reboot later, I believe this all done. But since this may allow ItsOn to bootstrap initialize, after flashing TWRP and backing up, I wipe internal memory and factory reset before flashing a custom ROM. Data format is optional; I don't always do that.
But if you do all that and don't see hotspot in Settings of stock, that's a problem. Maybe from dead stock, try KIES or Smart Switch to restore latest stock and check again?

Oneplus 5 stuck on setup?

EDIT: Solution was to sit with OP5 technician which flashed my ROM to Oxygen 4.5.1. After this didn't do it, I RMA-ed it and got a new OP5.
EDIT: TL;DR: After updating OP5 to 4.5.5, It doesn't recognizes sim nor wifi, and can't rollback to 4.5.3 that did and stuck on phone setup (needs wifi). ADB devices is empty, I have Google USB Driver from SDK, Windows 10
Hello,
I just got a new OP5 today.
Opened it in the store, came with Oxygen 4.5.3 outta the box.
I putted the sim in, and I connected to the store's wifi, all was good and even had a phone call to my mother to check if the mic and speaker are working well.
Then when I got home, I upgraded the OS to 4.5.5 through the settings, where Android suggested. I'm new to OP and android (moved from iphone 5) and so if there is a right way to do it, and that's not it, I wouldn't have known.
Then, OP5 didn't recognize the sim anymore and couldn't start the wifi (switching it on wouldn't work, it would do nothing), so I tried Factory reset. Unfortunately it didn't reset the OS as well and now I'm stuck outside can't use my sim card or connect to my home wifi to setup the device.
Tried installing OP5 usb drivers (show when connecting the OP5 to PC) and press the power button and lower speaker volume together, then flush the 4.5.3 OS through USB, but it doesn't recognize ZIP folder and when I tried to unzip and send boot image (cmd->"adb sideload boot.img) it started and then failed at 0%.
Please help, the phone right now is unusable.
Tried the Factory reset through settings, but it took so long I thought it was stuck, so I did it through recovery screen.
Sounds like you got a lemon... I'd take it back and see if they'll swap it for another. Less than a week should be replaced immediatelly, at least that's been my experience here in Oz...

Why should it be replaced in less than a week? Also, isn't there a fix for adb problem so I could flash 4.3.5? Maybe a remote takeover?
Mine had 4.5.3 on it when I got it, updated to 4.5.4 then manually downloaded full rom, placed on internal memory and flashed 4.5.5 through the settings.
Had zero problems with WIFI before, during and after the update. No problems since.
Generally updating to a higher firmware version won't allow you to regress back to the lower, not sure with Oneplus as this is my first.
I'd also, if you can boot into Android go to settings nd check my IMEI numbers to see if they have been wiped (this can cause the sim to not be recognised) . If you have no IMEI then that is a BIG problem which will require an RMA unless you had backed up your efs files which from your description I doubt..
If the IMEI is OK I would download the full firmware version from here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3628190 - then using PC put the FULL ROM onto the internal memory then go to recovery and flash.
I'd also then unlock my bootloader(Just remember though that the phone will wipe all data after unlocking bootloader) and install TWRP - don't forget to 1st enable developer mode in settings and then allow usb debugging and OEM unlock - make a backup of the working stock rom and put it somewhere safe - home PC, in case this happens again. Best idea is to use the all-in-one tool, here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...l-skipsoft-android-toolkit-oneplus-5-t3625419 thankyou MSkip.

I can't pass the "Connect to Wifi" in the initial setup of the android, as it finds no wifi networks (but of course there are, when I use the sim in my iphone it works properly and there are wifi networks). So I don't know how can I get the IMEI number.
Right now my PC recognizes the OP5 connected via USB, but "adb devices" bring back empty list.
I think that once I get that working, I could unlock the bootloader. But I can't seem to be able to enable dev mode in settings - I can't get there.
I can only get to the recovery screen beyond the initial steps of setting up android.
Right now there is no important data on the phone and I have my laptop which is virgin to ADBs and Drivers (didn't use it to try to resolve it).
What driver and where do I get the right ADB so I could load 4.5.3 from usb to the phone?
When you upgraded, did you wipe cache and dalvik?

Wiped after the upgrade whem problems started
Might be wrong but I thought you could skip the wifi select screen on the setup wizard.
If you can get to Android you need to go to settings, scroll down to about phone and tap around 8 times on build number to enable developer settings.
You might be able to, might, pull down the settings menu in the wizard and bypass the wizard.

It doesn't seem like I can skip it. Can't pull down a menu or anything
I guess only Oneplus can help me now?
Do you have any suggestion on fixing adb so it would recognize the OP5?
No, you need to enable debugging in developer settings for ADB to recognise.
Time to RMA...

Welp it is a pickle.
Going to go live chat with OP "level 2" representative.
See if they wipe the phone out and restore an older ROM.
If that't not going to work, RMA it is :/
Shame. A new phone. Took only one picture with my dad when we opened it back at the store. nothing else.
Unfortunately bad things can happen... You just got to be the one who got the dud this time round.....
Here's hoping it's the last time....
you can force update to a fresh installation of 4.5.5 by putting the 4.5.5 full zip into your phone in a folder called "update". Reboot to recovery im assuming you have stock recovery and follow the steps until you find the option that says something along the lines of "Update manually". It will detect if you have an update folder stored on your phone and it will begin reinstalling OOS 4.5.5. It sounds like a software problem but could be a hardware problem. Rule out the first option before RMA the latter.

When I connect the OP5 to the PC there are no folders under it (Computer -> OP A500 -> no folders), but I'll try and give it a shot. see what happens. Will update this reply.
Update:
After Oneplus flashed Oxygen 4.5.1 on the phone and some other magic I was able to skip wifi step on setup, yet still when I try to activate it it won't budge. the slider won't move and it looks as the page is being refreshed. Also, when I try to get into sim section in settings it would just freeze and alert the program stopped and suggest to close or wait.
Oneplus says it is hardware issue, and the fact it happened when I upgraded to 4.5.5 from settings menus is coincidence. They say I need RMA it.
If anyone knows how to fix it then I'm more than welcome to hear it.
EDIT: it also won't shut off unless I long press the power button.

No wifi on stock ROM and MAC address reads 02:00:00:00:00:00

My G4's been working fine since i had but about a week ago i noticed it wasn't connecting to any wifi networks. It was searching but couldn't find any.
I did a hard reset and now can't get past the android set up page, as soon as it starts searching for a wifi network it locks up and then reboots after about 10 seconds.
The MAC address is listed as 02:00:00:00:00:00
I've reflashed the Stock ROM that was already on it but it's made no difference, any ideas???
Have you got root?
No never been rooted
You could try rooting your phone and changing manually the MAC with some app.
Can't get past the android setup so I can't install any apps!
Give more detailed info about your problem
Bootloader unlocked or not
before flashing on whick rom you were?
What flashing instructions you used and what guide you followed?

The bootloader isn't unlocked.
Before flashing it was on NPJS25.93-14-13/3
I reflashed using https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138
Just to clarify the wifi wasnt working before the flash hence the reason for reflashing
Just tried unlocking the bootloader so i can try other roms but it wont let me. Keeps telling me to tick allow oem unlock. Cant do that as i cant get past set up screen!!
are you sure you are flashing the right version for your device??? flashing wrong firmware causes the MAC id issue most of the time!

Yes definitely the right version. The MAC id problem was there before any flashing was done.
at setup screen skip the setup, if you can. I am not sure, if you can skip it or not..I don't know, what other way you can do things without unlocking the bootloader
There's no option to skip the setup unfortunately, It locks up and restarts once its trying to connect to wifi. I've tried using the mobile network but it still crashes and restarts (I'm assuming that this is because wifi is still being turned on).
I'm at a bit of a loss what to do really???
I'm not sure whats causing the issue with the wifi, flashing stock ROM hasn't helped and i'm unable to unlock the bootloader because i can't get it to boot! Any help greatly appreciated!!!
Im beginning to think that there's no way to fix this, what i can't understand is why the wifi still isn't working after reflashing stock ROM surely that should clear everything back to factory including whatevers stopping the wifi working.
Could possibly be a hardware issuei suppose ,is it possible to replace the wifi chip?

I still have the original stock rom and exactly the same problem!
The last update ****ed it over!
I will now try cache clear on stock rom before I go further
Edit - No change! Definately need a solution for this
As I have the same problem I will wait for further support so that worst case I can provide help for the other user.
Mobile Data still works tough
Phone: never rooted, after cache clear it doesnt ask for update anymore which helps
EDIT 2: Got it to work. I wsa able to get into a public wifi download the new update and all is fine.
1. Clear cache
2. public wifi or download the latest update from XDA and start manually
This should fix it!
Just to share what helped me to recover Wi-Fi and solve the MAC address 02:00:00:00:00:00:
A. Get the apk file of the Wifi Mac Changer app and install it in your phone without Wi-Fi.
B. Open it and grant root access. You'll see that your "Real" MAC address will be 02:00:00:00:00:00.
C. Then you have your "Fake" Mac Address. Copy it into the line "New Mac" and press "Hard change" button. You don't need even to reboot to restore your Wi-Fi.
D. For me, it worked at the first time, I can also uninstall the app later. Later dirty flashes of ROMs got Wi-Fi without issues.
Hope it helps.

Shield TV won't accept Google login credentials

I received a new (to me) 2017 Shield via RMA from nVidia. I plug it in and go to set it up but when I get to entering your google account info, it consistently fails. The option to use androidtv dot com/setup and enter the provided PIN fails with "Something went wrong" (yes I'm on the same wifi, also fails when wired). The option to type in your account credentials also consistently fails saying my user name and password don't match. Now before you say "learn 2 type", immediately after not logging in, I get a security notification saying a new device has logged in to my account. This same result happens with any gmail account I try. I have factory reset the Shield (as instructed by nVidia support) to no avail. I have contacted Google support but they say it's nVidia's problem. I'm not sure what to do next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. Did you manage to get this fixed by chance?
Yes. I fixed it by flashing a recovery image. 8.0.1 just caused a boot loop but flashing 8.0 worked.

Thanks for getting back to me. I assume that to flash a recovery image, I'll need to unlock the bootloader? I was trying to avoid flashing, but it doesn't look like another solution will work...

I tried quite literally everything I could think of - multiple google accounts, different networks including hot-spotting my cell service, multiple factory resets. It seems my problem may have been a very outdated OS as after I was able to flash, the setup process was in a newer android style. It didn't occur to me that what I was seeing previously was "old" and may explain why it wouldn't connect to google.
Keep in mind, you can lock the bootloader again when you're finished.

Cool - thanks for the advice. Like you, I tried everything too. I tried 2FA on/off, turned on the "Less secure apps" option in my Google Account > Security. I also tried to factory reset without any success, as well as using a different Wi-Fi network and opened a new dummy Google Account just to make sure my original account wasn't the problem! None of it worked and had me tearing my hair out.
I have a 2015 Shield TV that was sealed and unused until the last week. I have never seen an issue before where even an older Android device cannot be signed into Google. At least it is a lesson learned for the future....!
Anyway, I've successfully flashed a newer version of Android now and it works. Hallelujah!
Right guys I have just got a replacement NVidia pro 500gb from them for a bricked unit and I am having the same problem. As I am a novice I have no clue about flashing an updated image to it. Is there anyone who is will to spell it out for me in easy to follow instructions??
