If you want a guess..I would guess 7.1.1 since it will be a refurb.

You will most likely get a 7.1.1 device. Warranty it through Google
From the posts I have read about it, your warranty replacement will be a VZW refurb most likely on 7.1.1. If you get a new device from VZW it is still coming on 7.1 NDE63P.
One member posted getting a warranty replacement through Google still on 7.1 but he had to request it that way...
I just got my RMA from vzw it had Oct's software on it. I'd say you're fine. Also if you want to go through Google, I've seen post on Reddit where Google will send you a non VZW version.
Already processed the Warranty through Verizon, getting it tomorrow. Hopefully I get a model with old software... If not then I guess I'm screwed then? Lol

Then yes you need to unlock the bootloader. But please do yourself a favor and research the crap out of unlocking and rooting before you do it. Also the benefits and drawbacks. Those themes can also boot loop your device if you're not careful and make sure you have a fail safe way to recover.

Root is possible without unlock, but no one is going to burn a root method on a phone with an unlockable bootloader. Get the model that unlockable.
Like previously stated this thread is moot. Warranty through Google or deal with a locked bootloader. End of story.

I also was wondering that. From what I know if it does not have correct signature our locked bootloader won't install any Odin file. I may try it later and will report back.

kernal is locked so you will get a mismatch and a soft brick. we will have to wait for ATT to supply the update to our bootloader. This is complicated by the fact that 5.0 is now in art runtime instead of davlik. hopefully the middle of Feb we will see a update.

No we will not get them unlocked unless AT&T changes their stance. My point was you will be unable to use other 5.0 ROMs until the death star update our phone to 5.0 and then we will have matching kernels to boot touchwiz based 5.0 ROMs in safestrap.

It's not just Samsung. AT&T and Verizon asked Samsung to add things like a locked bootloader and Knox to cater to Corporate America. So blame the carriers too. The W8 is the same phone, but TMobile didn't ask for all the corporate crap.
No way!! Its the fact samdung gives into the crap. Who will pay me the most? Lets markup the device as high as it can go... then make the end user feel special. Too many dramas

Looks like you may be charging that thing for a while, then. Seems that even the T-Mobile version is subject to the plague that is the locked bootloader for right now. Hopefully someone can figure something out or Samsung releases something along the lines of HTC's bootloader unlock for us. For once, the Snapdragon appears to be more crippled than the Exynos.

I understand everyone being upset about the latest development but some need to calm down a bit. Not saying it's anyone in this thread though some comments are a bit over the top. Maybe some people are new around here or others have the memory of a goldfish but this isn't' the first time this has happened to a device. There are a multitude of ways around this. Motorola who is known for locking bootloaders with almost a hatred for consumers, was defeated with the combined effort of many people on XDA. They managed to find the key to unlock the bootloader and it was smooth sailing from there.
Will we obtain the key? Quite possibly. we'll either do it the hard way and get lucky running a program on multiple computers and phones to decrypt it. The other option is that it'll be leaked by an internal source (probably the most likely). Samsung might even give us a dev program to unlock it similar to HTC. The fact is Samsung doesn't want a large customer base to be this unhappy. We are the most influential consumer base as well. Think of all the changes and additions to Android over the past few years. Changes that started here first and were adopted by manufacturers. They use us and in a way, need us to show them what people want. Let's not forget that XDA is the most influential Android site on the net. If Samsung gets snuffed here badly it'll spread very quickly.
TL;DR It'll happen one way or another guys. Chill out. May not be in the time frame we're use to these days (remember waiting weeks to months for root back in the day?) but it will happen. focus on pressuring those who can exact change into doing so. For the ones capable of it you should focus on ways around this.
I for one am not worried. I had a Motorola Defy that had a locked bootloader. By the time I had bought the phone though it had been out for a few months and people had found a way to put custom roms on it so I was happy.

I'm sure you have and of course you'd have to be comfortable with the procedure. But should you change your mind, know that the instructions around for doing so are fairly simple, and converting back to VZW is a cinch, I've done it myself and it was a two-step process (change cid back to VZW and run ruu).

I definitely won't be the guinea pig lol. Just preordered my full price g5 plus 64gb today. Should be delivered on release day. My moto x 1st gen somehow had the pins bent on the usb port. Stuck using my work phone (iPhone 6s) as my main phone. Can't stand iPhones!
idk if i care bout bootloader or not, i have moto g 1st gen which sadly fell down -many times- but last time the LCD screen film got broken from inside -not the screen itself- , too bad i wanted to try new cooked OS on it but it's unusable now
so now i've to order new phone and based on moto policy of getting kinda cheap phone + 99% vanilla android+future upgrades ,then it's what i want except i'm appealing for amazon price than original overpriced one
Just received my G5+ Amazon version and the bootloader unlock is a no go from the Moto site. Assumed as much after the G4.
Assumed so, got my g5+ in today and unlocked and rooted already. Saving the money on the amazon version would have been nice but I wanted to unlock it.

I sure did. There's a youtube video link on that page if you want visual instructions. It's super easy, just make sure whenever you restart recovery/power off in recovery you choose "Do Not Install" every time otherwise you'll brick the phone and you'll have to reflash the stock rom.
Argh, this is unfortunate. I stumbled upon a G4 thread that was saying how to remove it. I was surprised how easy it was so I decided to go purchase a G5 Plus.
Little did I know later in the thread it was discovered an error in Motorola's unlock system that was giving out codes.
The only thing I really look for is the rooting so I can backup apps and what not... really don't mind the ads. Is there any hope for a work around to unlock the bootloader?

You must not have read the thread, I know this already. I got my non-ad version yesterday, unlocked and rooted :good:
I ordered an essential phone on eBay, which came in today. It functions. However it's stuck on 7.1.1. I contacted Essential and they told me what I have is a Sprint demo model. I run a few errands hardware tests and it seems it does have the sd835 (it says msm8998?) and correct ram and memory, supposedly. It said something like only 407dpi and a slightly lower resolution display. I contacted the seller and he told me that Essential says this to like 20 of his customers and that I can manually download and install the update. I'm hesitant to try that in case of hardware discrepancies. The bootloader says "Mata" for codename etc. Any thoughts on this???
I have the chance to return it. Is it worth it to return it and get another one? I want the correct specs as a normal ph1.

Mata is the codename for this phone. If you goto about phone and it is hardware revision 1.8 then you have the same hardware as the rest of us and should just download one of the "back to stock" fastboot packages on this forum and call it a day.

What is the variant in the bootloader? It must be unlocked, so in that case, you should get OTA updates as they are released.
It does say unlocked but it would not receive OTAs, I spent a good couple hours trying and troubleshooting. I contacted Essential and that's when they told me it's probably a Sprint demo. I just unlocked the bootloader and updated everything manually then relocked the bootloader.
You could flash last months 9.0 release, use it like that for a bit and see what happens. Would be the fastest way to determine whether it will update now or not. Also you should leave the bootloader unlocked, from what I've seen on this forum relocking the bootloader has been the cause of 99% of bricking for this phone.
Thanks for the info. I may try the recent prior update thing, if not I guess I can always manually flash.
