Re-Assigning Power Button

Hey guys, I just got my 8525 a week ago, I'm still trying to get used to it. Overall i think i like it more then my TREO650 but i have one problem, i cant stand the small power button on the side. Most of the time i push it i push the slide keyboard out too, its so small i can never find it.
My old Treo650 had the power button and locking keys on the END button, when i push END it would lock and turn off the screen, to Unlock i would push END again and then the Center button. Is there any way to re-assign the Power button on the 8525 to be like my old Treo650?

Any suggestions guys. I am having the same problem with small power button

sounds like a personal problem, maybe see a doctor?
On a serious note.. i dont think it can be reprogrammed via the software, i believe the power button is actually mapped via hardware since it is used for functions like putting the phone into bootloader mode, etc.. i could be wrong though.

Hey thanks for the reply although its my phone with the small problem I have tried two programs on the forum here called Devicelock.cab but that only locks the device but you still have to push power to power the phone back up.

I believe the power key can be reprogrammed in one or two highly invasive ways.
However, it doesn't sound like you want to re-assign the power key, but to assign the power off function to another key. Is that correct? That's easy/
If you want to assign the power on function, that is more complicated, but there are work arounds.

I agree with the original poster. The small power on/off button is poor design. When I want to place a call, I first need to turn the device on by hitting that very small button. Then I need to activate the phone app or invoke MS voice command. It's just plain poor design. I love my 8525, but it could be so much better if the product designers at HTC actually thought about the ergonomics of the tasks users do the most.
One more gripe. The phone app is atrocious. Getting to the recent dialed list or to toggle the speakerphone usually requires bringing up a menu. This is annoying for a phone and a better design could mitigate the poor usability. I/m not an iPhone fanboy but take a look at the thought Apple put in there *first* phone and it is quite illuminating on the state of PPC phones.

You could try scrollwheel up or D-pad up for recent call list .
(also down for speed-dials).
Maybe you could map a button for speakerphone, not sure though.

The original poster could - while in a call - try pressing the green button for two or three seconds.
I think it's even mentioned in the manual...

Hello.
I agree with the previous posters. The badly placed powerOn button is "bad design". If anyone finds the sollution (to PowerON the device using another key) please share it!
Otherwise, this is a great device. A true pocket computer

+1 for the poor design.
I always hit the power button as I am pulling it out of the case when a call comes in, that turns off the screen, then I have to hit it again to see who is calling, and with all that going on as well as the ringer, the phone has a minor anurism and delays in answering.....

So to summarise the poor design aspect of this thread:
1. The power button is too small/difficult to find and press.
2. The power button is too easy to press/find even by accident.
Conclusion, it's just about right then!!
You can't please all of the people all of the time.

Sounds like the classic male/female dichotomy. I never can operate my wife's buttons, however obvious the functionality might seem....

I can also operate my wifes buttons just fine as well but all i want is to find out if i can move the power button to maybe the PPT button or END when holding it.

Daftek, again, do you want to emulate the power key functionality, (ie on/off) on another key, and/or entirely disable the original power key?

I think we'd all like to assign a DIFFERENT KEY to POWER ON function. POWER OFF is no problem, because a button for this can be assigned through "Buttons". When the phone is in "sleep mode", only the POWER button can wake it.
Any solutions?

IMHO, it's possible but not easily.
Easiest work around is to disable button locking, so that pressing any button can wake the device, and then use a software lock to timeout/power off if you happen to poke a hardware button while it's in your pocket.
Alternatively you could rewrite the button driver, but it's possible (although I've not looked into it definitively) that the hardware power button is a hardware interrupt to the CPU. In which case a software based solution will not override a hardware based connection.

I totally agree the power button is a pain, the size, placement...
I know this sounds a bit weird but I took a small piece of plastic (actually from a toothpick) and crazy glued it on the button. It works great! I never miss the button anymore! See picture...

Wing Clear Storage (screen broken)

Hello,
I have a t-mobile wing with a broken screen. I'm sending it back for replacement but i want to hard reset before i do. Ive tried doing this by watching reviews on youtube to see how the menus are laid out, but i cant seem to get it right. Can anyone give me an extremely specific walkthrough?
or better yet, would someone let me call them or call me so we can walkthrough the hard reset together?
Also, I tried using the left,right softkey plus soft reset button and i don't know where to go after there. I'm not even sure if that worked.

i did this on my mda when i had a broken screen...all i did was use the actual buttons...i pressed the windows buttons used the directional button to move up and down, went to settings, used the dirctional button to move around and went to system, then used the directional button again to go to clear storage and that was it...

Can you tell me the button combination?

1. press the window button (or the start button, its the bottom left button on the phone has the windows logo).
2. go down with the joystick (the big directional button in the middle) and go to settings (select it with the button in the middle of the joystick)
3. using the joystick again go to system (its the second button on the bottom)
4. using the joystick again go to "clear storage" and select it with that middle button again (the one inside the joystick)
5. your done....

so you cant see anything??? i thought it was like cracked or something...anyways...here we go...ill try...
1.windows button
2. setting click up once, that should get you there or two clicks if you have the help button there...
3. click up once then click over right
4. click up once and down once then select that should get you to clear storage...
5. it will ask you to type the numbers 1234 and press yes which should be the button right button above the windows and phone button...
note: its a long shot because depending on where you left off last thats where the button will take you...if that doesnt work trying turning your phone off and trying it again to reset everything...

Thanks so much. it worked. Phew. now my tracks are covered. Not that i was over clocking or changing my page pool or anything. wink wink.

Oh and in case you were wondering. My phone dropped from my bed on to my carpet. And i don't know how it is physically possible but the screen cracked on the inside meaning when the phone is off it looks perfectly normal. But when i turn it on i get a crack and all white screen . Lame. I'm going to make them send me a new one.
I think what happened is that i charge it at night and i keep it under my pillow (vibrating alarm wakes me up) and i think it overheated and that caused the screen to crack not the 1.5 foot drop on to fluffy carpet. The phone shows no physical sign of damage.

[Q] Touchscreen not working on lock and reset screens

In the last couple of weeks, when the pattern lock screen is displayed, it intermittently doesn't accept touch input. If I power off and on the screen quickly, it then accepts touch input fine.
Similarly, if I press and hold the power button (with the phone on), it brings up a "Phone Options" screen, with options for Silent, Airplane, Profile, Reboot and Power Off. Touch input does not work at all on this screen. I'm working around this by using the Quick Boot app.
Otherwise, touch input works fine, so I don't think it's a hardware problem.
I've seen something similar when Google Nav gets in front of the lock screen. Touch doesn't work until I power off and on the screen, and enter the lock pattern. Could something invisible be getting in front of the lock and power screens?

Maybe the ROM h doesnt function properly on your device. Try shifting to another rom. All are equally amazing. If you do not want to shift, try running task29 and start the process all over again

Have you read the thread about the unresponsive touchscreen, where pressing hard on the end call button fixes the screen touch? I assume your problem is in essence the same; once you press it hard enough to actually unlock the screen the touch works fine.

That probably is what the problem is. Btw to everyone, I haven't noticed a difference in pressing it really hard, I noticed that pressing it a lot of times does the trick

Thanks for the feedback. I don't think it's the ROM, been using GBX-v12 since it was released, and previous versions before that.
The symptoms do seem similar to the other thread, but others report it on many screens. I only get it on the lock and reset/power screen. Otherwise, it works fine. However, those screen are brought up after pressing the power key ...
I suppose if it is hardware, then it's likely that cable issue. If it's software, then a reset should clear it, so I might try an ICS ROM from scratch first.

I guess i shoulda commented that how my digitizer began acting, it only did it while in the power menu but after a couple days it started doing it while just hitting the power button to put it to sleep, so i remapped my green phone key to be the power button

Thanks for the tip. You're right about the symptoms getting worse, it now occasionally stops working on other screen
I'm using any button but power to turn on the phone. To turn it off I've added "Go to sleep" to the notification widget bar, which I assume is the same as pressing power??
Not quite as user friendly and sometimes I forget not to use power off, but it'll do for now!

Yes that will work! I used it cause I got lazy and didn't feel like changing the key file but it's much easier to use the green call key instead of the notification power widget

Try this:
Lock the screen normally, screen turns off.
To turn it on again by pressing any other screen buttons other than the power button.
I found that if I do it this way, the screen runs normal.

Controller Sleep Logic?

So out of curiousity, how does the controller decide when to sleep/wake up? It seems like every few minutes of inactivity (say I'm watching a movie and I want to turn down the volume) I need to long press the button in the middle to get the controller to turn on/pair, which all takes about 5-6s, which isn't always convenient (or say pause the movie if someone calls).
Is there a way to increase the timeout or turn it off completely via some software trick? I'm fine with running the batteries down, I will just recharge them when necessary.

You know, I was having the same issues until I figured something out. I don't believe the controller goes to sleep immediately even after 5 min of non-use. If I turn it on for the first time today, I have to long press like you described. But lets say I set it down and watch a show on netflix or listen to a song. Whether I set the controller down for 5 min, or 30 min, the next time I need to wake it up, all I have to do is press the home button once. Not a long press, a regular press - which in turn wakes it up. Now, If I don't use the controller again till the next day, it will need a long press...hope this helps.
It's like shortly after use it goes to sleep with an instant on feature, but after an extended period of time it shuts down.

The CTRLR timeout is after about 2min of inactivity. If its gone to sleep, you can usually wake it up with single tap of Home button. If it doesn't wake up, you can do the press and hold Home button for 5 seconds to turn on.
Bonus tip: Press and hold Home button for 1 sec brings up the Recent Apps screen.

:good: It's a great feature, I use it a lot, even in gamesmart mode it works!
Shame you have to switch to mouse mode to select an app.. is there any chance of better navigating the android UI in gamesmart mode in the new Android 4.4?

I was doing long press every time I wanted to use the controller. Was getting frustrated with this and started to wonder if there was a way to disable sleep mode on the controller. The short press seems to work
It would still be nice if there was a way to customize how long you need to wait until the controller goes to sleep.

The controller switches itself into standby when not in use to save power, when the power / home button will glow red (it's normally blue). Switching the controller out of standby seems to be something of a black art, it doesn't 'wake up' as quick as I'd like, but after a few weeks of use i've got used to it.

I keep the thumbscrew on my at all times, for fear of losing it to.
I agree about the mode switch being difficult at times.
For comparison purposes, a Nvidia Shield is currently £279.99, also on Amazon UK and shares pretty much the same internals but adds a screen. You'd probably want a HDMI cable to play it on your TV.

You'd need a bluetooth controller for that 'similar experience' :laugh:
They are similar experience, but how you get there is night and day.
Ie, Yeah, the shield has HDMI out, I have a hacked PSP with tv out, but I could never be bothered setting it up (A/V and power).
And the same with my tablet with HDMI out, did it a few times mostly for movies.
IMO, the mojo is convenient for TV topset box, desktop gaming and moga style gaming, all ready to go out of a single box (with exceptions lol).
Actually, I wrote on my blog about all the 2013 micro-consoles, and none were perfect out of the box experiences either.

Hey, what does holding down start do?
I noticed it disables the controller for a while.
I was doing scorpions fatality on Mortal Kombat 1 on md.emu, block up, where block is start and the home light started flashing.

Holding the Start button for 5 seconds will have the Home button flash purple, clearing pairing for the CTRLR. It will then flash the usual red and blue, putting the CTRLR in Discovery Mode until it connects to a host. If the USB dongle is plugged in, it will usually immediately connect to that.
Otherwise, you can have it connect wirelessly to Bluetooth 4.0 PCs with Windows 8 (including the Microsoft Surface Pro) and Bluetooth 4.0 Android devices that have KitKat (like the Nexus 5 and 7). Just go into the device's Bluetooth settings and make sure the USB dongle is not plugged into anything.
For emus, I've been playing around with setting R3 as Start. Still trying to get used to it. :x Hope that helps!

R3 = Right analog click in, Interesting.. never thought of using those!
I'll leave it as start tho, as it plays just like the original pads :laugh:

Played around with L3 as Select and R3 as Start since Back button was usually the emu menu.... Unfortunately, didn't work out for me as I kept pressing L3 by accident whenever I was doing quick movements with the Left Analog. T_T
I've revised my control scheme to R3 as Select, and Start as the regular Start button now.

FWIW I usually just assign the Back button to the Select function - if I ever need to bring up the emulator menu I switch to mouse mode and click the back button in the soft menu bar.

Mushy power button?

Well, title's pretty explanatory :b My power button has become mushy, and not at all tactile to press. Anyone else with the same feel? What to do?

Mine is very clicky. You could either try using a case that has a bump over the buttons to help make it feel more clicky, or try contacting support and see if you can get a replacement.

How many times have you pressed it more firmly than you should?
We all, tend to do that when we enter a lot in the recovery using the button method instead of the advance reboot option available in the developers' option.
Why exactly do you use that button?
(I suffered from the same behaviour on a Google Nexus 4)

I wish I could say I'm surprised but I'm not impressed with the build quality of this phone and expect that the various buttons and ports will go bad for a lot of owners. I'm already having problems with the headphone jack and my phone is just 3 weeks old.

I rarely use the power button. Double tap home button to sleep and use the fingerprint or double tap to wake.
I sometimes accidentally press the power button, but that's about all the usage mine sees.
