Yesterday my phone just went black and no matter how hard I tried to turn it on, it just wouldn't turn on.. Also, yes, I have tried plugging it in without battery and seeing if it will display the missing battery screen, but it only sometimes does, which would indicate a failing hardware inside my phone.
My question was, is the J500FN (2016) a great upgrade over my dead LG L Fino? Are you guys satisfied with the phone? Is the touchscreen input response time great? Also, which ROM/Kernel would you recommend me to use if I bought this phone?
Thanks in advance!

Hello!
My answer to your question is no.
J5 (2016) doesn't have that much development and Touchwiz sux.
I'm a J500FN (2015) owner and the phone is quite good and i didn't have any problem with it. But I'm using CM to use my phone to it's fullest capabilities, and not Touchwiz which make a phone a crap phone.
I don't recommend buying Samsung unless there is stable CM/AOSP available.
If you're looking for a phone with good XDA support, I would say to take a look at Moto G4 Play. It has similar hardware specs as J5 2016 and it got good XDA support.
Here is a comparison with specs between Moto G4 Play and J5 2016: http://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8104&idPhone2=7869 .
It depends what's your budget and what phone you want (e.g. with removable battery or not etc.).

Well, I don't plan on staying on Touchwiz even if I buy the phone, I just like it specs-side and that it has removable battery and SD card slot.

Well, J5 (2016) has few ROMs based on Touchwiz which is same thing. It doesn't have cm.
It's your choice, but if I were you, then I would choose the Moto G4 Play.

Ok, so do you think J5 (2016) will get different ROMs soon ? I'm asking because J5 (2016) has a 500MB more RAM and has a bit of visual appearance improvements.

I dont think it will get any CM based rom. There is only one developer which made a kernel.
Man, just go for Moto G4 Play (2gb ram version) . It will even have Nougat according to gsmarena, if you care about it. It is cheaper, has similar specs and has good XDA support. Moto ftw! xD

J5 2016 has 2gb ram and Moto G4 Play 16gb version has 2gb ram too.
J5 2016 has GPU Adreno 306, which isn't too good if you game a lot. The FPS drop over time is quite significant, playing heavy games like GTA SA lags a lot. Otherwise it'd have been a great phone.
I have a J5 2016 (J5108) with stock 5.1.1 unrooted
I might get the Moto G4 Play after all.. Seems a better choice by a bit to me..

Thanks for the advice guys, but OnePlus 2/3 far exceed my budget..
Also I don't care that much about the camera - I don't focus on having an excellent camera anyways. And it can't have such a bad camera.. (Probably is better than on my LG L Fino)
I've watched videos on YouTube, showing the camera's capabilities and the quality seems decent enough for me.

G4 has much lower performance than one plus 2.
G4 has. better camera
G4 price constantly decreases.
Oneplus 2 is developer friendly
Oxygen is almost aosp .
I recommend you to buy oneplus 2 and sell g4 if you want far better performance.
If you like better support and camera and you dont care about top performance keep lg g4.

No. Let's say if both are running vanilla android. If the g4 had root I think would be ideal to compete with the 1+2 especially because it has memory card, better screen and better camera. It even costs less, $400 new.

if this were a flagship phone, you might have a point with the select few people that are experiencing lag, those that don't, this is about the best mid ranged budget phone you can buy. Some people will say the nexus 5x isn't much more, and that's only true in the US. Outside of the US there is a pretty significant price difference, not to mention all the nexus 5x gives over the moto x play is a finger print sensor and a slightly better camera.
No SD card slot for the nexus 5x killed it as a budget device. Googles argument about SD card storage been slow is kind of moot given they are adding a feature in 6.0 called "Adoptable Storage" meaning I can turn my SD card into part of my phones memory. Meaning a 64gb SD card in my moto x play will my phone will report 80gb of internal storage. Given UHS-3 card can now reach 95mb/s read, it's not that far behind the phones storage speed (getting 125-130) on mine.
For the very select few that have lag, it seems to releated to having specific software, more commonly, having google apps 5.2 or below. Many users noting a significant increase in performance running google apps 5.3+.
The battery is amazing, the camera is about the best you'll get on a sub 400$ phone. It's confirmed we are getting 6.0 and with a SD card slot, this is easily the best budget device on the market at the moment.
Take a look at this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/general/moto-x-play-performance-t3186858
I think the majority of users have lag issues. To me, it's unacceptable that a Moto G 2nd gen (or even the G 1st gen) don't have this problem and the X Play does. I would definitly look at some other options if I were you, even though in this price range would be a little difficult to find something.

I don't think you've ever owned a fast phone, because you would instantly see how unresponsive this phone feels most of the time. Sure its snappy, but if you can't see that input lag, you arent very knowledgeable about the subject. I wouldn't trust your opinion for that reason.

Maybe I do have a defective phone, but that wouldn't be my fault would it? If you can give me a video demonstrating your own touch response delay(by turning on the show touch in developer options and demonstrating it through slow and fast swipes), I'd be thankful of you. That way I can prove I can know for sure that it is or isn't a defective unit. I don't mean to start an argument anymore, but if you can help me compare the two, that would help a lot. So far I like this phone a lot except for that reason, I also bought it open box from my carrier, maybe that has something to do with it.
It's not defective, Motorola already admitted it and they are working on a fix. For the play and the style

I would still suggest this phone...because of amazing display in 20k..may be the best... Excellent battery life....trust me i am an Indian user n battery is amazing. Camera is pretty good too if you know how to click pictures..(dont do bad photography and blame the camera for it). Marshmallow is just around the corner... Turbo charging n all and it doesnt heat like all those chinese mi4i.....i would still suggest this or you will gonna miss on a pretty powerful smartphone. Apart from it i trust asus zenfones..they are pretty good phones...zenfone 2 is damn good but display n battery is not at all near moto x play. Absolutely! In April, I bought the Moto G3 (2015) for my wife who had used a Samsung Galaxy 5-S for two years. She is very pleased with it and loves everything about it. The only regret she has is not waiting for the G4. She has been suffering with envy over my XT1625. Upgrading to this phone would be an even better move for your wife. :good::good::good::good::good:

You won't have the waterproof ability as much as the S5 and it's not as fast on benchmarks. The screen is nice and it's on clean Android. If she's used to TouchWiz the Samsung interface it will take a little to get used to. My GF has a J3 and likes my G4 but gets stuck in the interface.
There is no home button only on screen so if she's used to it that might be a turn off.

Okay, I see that now.
Quick question. Is it worth getting a G4 Plus or G5 Plus and replacing a Galaxy S5? The S5 has had it's bootloader cracked and is now unlockable if you have the right version of it. The Specs on the S5 seem to be a bit better than the G4 or G5 plus, but I like the features of Moto's. This device would be for my sister, who is in no way a power user. I do all her technical stuff for her. One advantage of the Moto's is they will be updated to Nougat where as the S5 will be done at MM, I think. Secondly the unlocking of the Moto bootloader is crazy simple and the S5 is a bit more involved. Any opinions are appreciated. Thank you.
Go for a Nokia 6 or G5 plus.

I agree, but the Spec's on the older SG5 are not the bad compared to the G5 Plus. It's not like the G5 Plus totally destroys the SG5. I do like the clean Moto interface and the Moto actions. Biometric unlocking is cool too. I am leaning towards the G5 Plus but wanted to see what others thought as well.

I really wouldn't get an S5 unless new. The majority of S5s out there are refurbs or used, and even then they cost upwards of $200. IF you CAN get it new for under $200, pick one up. Custom ROMs are aplenty for it and it has better hardware than the G4/G5 (SD801, better camera, waterproofing, etc.).
The G5 should get Android O later this year, even given Lenovo's spotty track record on updates.
The G4 won't get O unless through custom ROMs.
Age also matters. I would say that the G5 would be a little better durability wise given its metal construction, but I also don't know how old your sister is.

My original post might have been confusing, she currently has the S5. We are considering getting her the G5 Plus. She is not techie and wouldn't benefit in any way from a custom ROM. She wouldn't know how to do anything with custom firmware.

Ah OK, makes sense. Yeah, then I would go with the G5 Plus.
Personally, I think Lenovo dropped the ball with the Plus as the standard G has a removable back and battery, while the Plus does not.
The G4 has a removable back, and while it technically does not have a removable battery it can be removed with a few screws, connectors, and battery adhesive. So, in the long run, I would definitely prefer the G4.

It is nice that the G4 has a removable battery, but I like the specs of the G5 Plus a bit more. She will upgrade her phone again in 2 years or so anyway. If the battery can't last that long then I'm done with Moto. We will keep the S5 as a backup and I plan on unlocking the boot loader if she has the version that is unlockable.

You have something wrong with your G5+ if your S7e is faster... As far as keyboard I use Gboard for all devices but thats a personal preference

How can you compare stock Android to Samsungs bloat? iPhones with lower specs are faster then Android phones with higher specs because of sofrware optimization. A phone with stock Android will always be faster then a skinned one. Also the 625 is quite the performer.

Yes I have the S7 edge. And I have owned almost every flagship service since the Samsung Instinct. Yes the screen is much nicer on the S7 that's a given

Like the title says am I crazy? I've owned just about every flagship you can think about in the United States save for the G6 and S8 and just want something different. My Moto x 2013 was one of my favorite devices because of the size, fluidity of UI, twist to open camera, great battery life, near stock Android. What do you guys think will I regret switching to G5 Plus 4gb?

Unless you are a heavy phone gamer, or you require your phone to have samsung pay/android pay for mobile payments(In the US as the G5 PLUS US version does not have NFC) then I see no reason why you will regret the decision to go to a G5 Plus. It is a solid phone, and decent specs.
Points though you will notice that the screen on the Moto G5 Plus is not as vibrant as the S7 Edge. No NFC in the US version of the phone as stated before, but if you can live with those 2 issues and the fact motorola still needs better camera software (but there are other apps that do a better job on the play store if you take a lot of pictures) the G5 Plus is a solid phone. I have an S7 Edge myself just got it 2 weeks ago switching to T-Mobile. but I just purchased a G5 Plus 4GB ram/64 GB storage amazon variant for my mother in law and have been playing with it the last day setting it up for her. I like the G5 Plus...it reminds me alot of what the Moto X 2013 phone was and it feels good in the hands even with a tpu case on it(diztronic) I think it will be a great phone for Motorola if they will support the software on it for more than 7.1 update.
I just got mine up and running. Came over from an S6. Very happy so far. Tomorrow starts the battery life tests.
The speed of the animation can be adjusted in the developer settings. You should change this to 0.5x for the 3 parts, reboot. Then your phone should be feeling fast
