Update
I write this with the sole purpose of informing (as objectively as possible) possible buyers of the advantages and disadvantages of this terminal, since there is always a lot of talk about the good things of the phone, but seldom is spoken of the bad; given that these 2 terminals are in my opinion the best and most complete in the market today, I will write what I think and feel after having the Mate 9 for 3 days and comparing it with Axon 7.
Size
I loved it, and I think it's exquisite. I really thought that the phone would be bigger, but it is almost the same measures of the Axon 7, being that one has a screen of 5.5 "and the other one of 5.9".
Screen
I honestly thought the screen would be worse because of the change in resolution, but it's pretty decent, and I can say that unless you're not playing, you're not going to notice the difference between the QHD screen and the FHD of Mate 9. The resolution difference will be noticed immediately in games, I already installed 2 and I can say that it is quite annoying to see the graphics a little pixelated and with that lack of sharpness and definition that I had in Axon 7. Still not sure if the lack of quality is because most of the applications are not optimized for Kirin yet or is because of the limitation of the screen,
Performance
I can say that I had never had such a fast and responsive terminal, even with Android stock. Comparing the 820 and 4GB RAM from the Axon 7, I have to give this one to the Mate 9 because the stupid speed it has, there is nothing more to say.
Software
Both UI pleased me, although I must say that EMUI 5 is a breakthrough. MiFavor of the Axon 7 still feels like past versions of EMUI, while EMUI feels a little to iOS, which is nice for me, even when I hate Apple and its products, I must accept that they have good taste for designs. Both ZTE and Huawei have already launched some updates and both have been polishing things, so this should not be a worry. I didn't take in consideration the version of Android, because in the UI i always more important the version of this than the version of Android.
Sound
The Axon 7 is better, both in speakers and in audio output. I didn't like the speakers of Mate 9, especially for the positioning. Although the headset works as a speaker, the reality is that the volume is far below the other speaker, and this panning at the end does not feel like stereo and just confuses. The concept is good, but the implementation was not the best, they would have put up speakers of similar power to achieve this correctly.
Camera
I am one of the few (starting to be many) who are disappointed by this camera. It is not a wonder or magic, it takes good pictures, but nothing more. I sincerely bought the equipment with the promise that it would be an incredible experience in photography, but the only thing I got are decent photos and several times I had to use the manual mode, when I expected that the Auto mode was already quite good, and only use the manual mode in very complicated conditions. There is much to improve here, and I can say that I do not notice any difference between the photos made with Mate 9 and Axon 7, and even, I like more the colors that the Axon 7 has. On the other hand, the videos on the Mate 9 are way better that the mediocre quality on the axon 7.
Battery
There is nothing to say, the battery on the Mate 9 is impressive; at the end of the day I come around 60% with about 3-4 hours of screen. The Axon 7 was giving me at most 4-5 hours of screen.
Price
The Axon 7 can be bought for about € 400, while the Mate 9 can be get for around € 650. Does the difference is justified ?, no in my opinion, and I think that if you are not looking for a big phone or a giant battery, the Axon 7 is the device to buy. Having a "just decent" screen, a poorly achieved sound and a camera that does not behave much higher than the Axon 7, made it a big disappointment for me to have buyed this equipment.
I waited the Axon 7 for many months but I gave up on it because I never could get one, is really hard to get where I live.
I was going with the Mate 9 because Huawei has big presence in Europe and is easier to get, but just last week I saw an Axon 7(A2017G) at good price and I pulled the trigger. The initial plan was to play some days with the Axon 7 and then sell it, because I already had the plan for the Mate 9, but with each day that passes, I'm thinking in keep it.
I was planning to get the Mate 9 because I'm really interested in camera quality, and I have seen Mate 9 is slightly better in this, but not for much in my opinion and it comes with the cons of losing the nice audio and the screen resolution, but with the pros of a better camera and battery.
I'm not interested anymore in development(root, ROM's, kernels, mods, etc), usually all the things I need now come with the stock ROM. I'm more interested in the camera, screen, battery and overall performance and experience.
Both cost the same where I live, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Mate 9 or had the opportunity to play with it, I would be interested in your opinions and comments so I can take a decisions about these 2 devices.
Thanks
:highfive:
One plus 3T, hands down. If they'd had that around when I purchased the Axon, I would've went with that.
If not, but the mate 9.
actually all phone had the same spec but only the firmware, kernel and Os and great dev to make the whole experience user friendly, unfortunately what i can tell from Axon 7 G version the software experience is totally different with other variant which i think will leads to the main downfall of this great hardware device..... ZTE will not focus on this device after nougat updates and basically this is the main problem and strategy for all mid range phones except for couple of brands in the market like Xiaomi/redmi. Xiaomi or redmi most likely will not upgrade their mid range phone OS but they still give consumer their latest MIUI look and feel which makes their customer happy... so far i just did not see ZTE what they are trying to do... same goes to Asus... about are my 2 cents of thought

Actually I was considering the OP3T some weeks ago, but the problems with the screen, bluetooth, notifications, etc., make me discard it. I think is a great device, but I'm more a multimedia consumer and a good screen, stereo speakers and decent camera are more valuable to me than being able to have development on it, and the OP3T fails on 2 of those.
Besides that, I really hate capacitive buttons and front facing fingerprint reader, they just take unnecessary space and make the device more bulky, and even when the Axon 7 has capacitive buttons, the form factor and tiny bezels make it be smaller than many phones of the same screen size with on-display buttons.
Anyway, I really value your comment and I will have it present for my next buy, because it seems that OP4 could come sooner with some nice surprises.
The Mate 9 is probalby better in almost every way. I see only three things better on the Axon 7 : the amoled 2560*1440 screen, the audio and the development (i don't know if things have changed with Huawei or not).
But the price point isn't the same at all !
Personally, i own the Axon 7 and i don't regret buying one second. It's a great device !

Actually, I'm pretty impressed by ZTE respond with the Axon 7, most of the complaints and things users asked, are put on the phone continuously., and the fact they allowed to unlock the bootloader gives the impressions that they actually want to care about the phone. I think that the Axon would receive another update at least after Nougat, because when they were advertising selling it, ZTE advertised as first Daydream ready device, which also implies Nougat device.
Besides, I don't consider the Axon 7 as mid range device, and ZTE hasn't anything else to be fully working on.

The Axon 7 is perfect in all aspect except one, low light pictures. It has a very good optical and electronic stabilization for video recording. And color accuracy of pictures is remarkable. The screen is superior to any other phone in it's price range with the excellent Samsung panel. The battery lasts for almos 2 days. I got an average of 14 hours of screen on time with medium use (emails, whatsapp, texts, web browsing, phone calls, Skype, hangouts, PDF view, taking pictures, etc). I have root the device but I am using stock kernel, stock rom with a couple of tweaks, but always with nominal voltages and speeds. ZTE has a nice service for customers here in USA. It has a public beta program and I really like the way they are doing with this phone.
Nougat has been announced by ZTE to be released before the end of this month and that unlocks Daydream.

I remember you from the other european thread, back in july when there was only on thread for Axon 7 and there wasn't forum yet.
Anyway, I think that battery and camera are better on Mate 9, but I'm thinking on that FHD screen, moreover because of the size of the phone and also because is IPS, so no Daydream at all. For design, performance, usability, etc., I think both are great devices, but the Axon 7 and how ZTE has been polishing the software and the camera in this time have me impressed.
Lol you are comparing a flash ship priced mate 9 (800$) to a $400 device??

That depends where you live, and as I said on the OP, I can get any of them around €550, so that's why price is not a factor for me, and I'm more interested in the overall experience of each one.
Mate 9 for us in the States is $600 vs the axon 7 at $380-$400,depending on where you buy from

I always see you are really active around here and is really nice to have people like you helping others.
I feel what you said, and indeed I only picked the device as an experiment, but I'm thinking if I should keep it. For me, this phone with some AOSP/CM development could be for me the Nexus that never came in 2016 because of the Pixel branding. Back in the dark times I used to root my device, install some custom stuff and undervolt/underclock in order to have a decent battery life, but with the Axon 7 even with stock I'm able to get 2 days with around 4 hrs SOT, but having +10 hrs SOT sounds epic.
As far as low light pictures, camera is an important point for me, I still know is a phone and I don't pretend to have the best phone's camera on the market, but I don't see the pictures from the Axon 7 bad at all and I think they are pretty decent (which is enough for me), and if someone needs more, we have the manual mode available as well. I attach some that I have taken over the week.
Maybe the question would be if ZTE is planning to improve the camera or if there has been any improvements since it was launched?, I would be interesting in knowing this, I have only 1 week with the device and I can't tell if ZTE is focusing and improving the camera with updates or not.
Thanks

Any word about the camera?, I mean, if ZTE has been improving it with updates or if is something they are trying to get better?, I would be really interested in knowing this.
I do not know. We have the initial ROM and 2 updates. So in average we have an update every 8 weeks or so. I got this phone barely one month ago. Probably people with longer experience could tell you whether the low light camera has been improved or not. There are other apps with better behavior under low light conditions there is something written in these forums you can just search for.

Mate 9 Pro for me is a rip off of the S7 Edge, which I don't like at all, and I think is a steal at that price. I have always stay away from capacitive buttons and front fingerprint scanners.
Still I don't understand the decision to put a QHD screen on a 5.5" device and let the 6.0" with just FHD, regular Mate 9 with QHD and AMOLED display could be a nice improvement.

I hope ZTE keeps improving the software, and than more and more people keep joining the development scene.
Thanks for your answers!.
Added little comparison with the Mate 9 after spending some days with it.
Have both Axon 7 and Mate 9. I'm a slut for big screens. They both have good and bad issues. FOR the price the Zte can't be beat. Do like the M9 interface, large screen and IPS 1080 display.
After my s7 Edge I'll probably never buy Samsung again

Hey guys! So i've narrowed down my choices for a new phone:
Huawei Mate 7 or Xperia Z3. Both are great sexy phones but I like the larger screen, fingerprint, and less bezel on the mate 7. Both have around the same screen on time (around 10 hrs).
For Mate 7:
- Screen looks washed out compared to other flagships, Z3 gets brighter
+ Bigger screen, smaller bezels
+ Fingerprint scanner
? Kirin 925 (I've heard its worse than the 801 and has lags and micro stutters when scrolling in browser, is the phone laggy?)
For Xperia Z3:
+ Bright, colorful screen
- Smaller screen, bigger bezels
+ Front facing stereo speakers
+ Faster updates (It's nice but I don't really mind that much about updates, as long as the mate7 eventually gets lollipop)
Is there some way to adjust the colors and make it more saturated/vivid on the Mate 7? and are the reports of the Mate 7 lagging in browser etc true? Please help me decide what you would go for if you had the choice between these two
It would depend on how you would use the phone. If you are just a regular user and a non techy one. Mate7 is good enough. But keep in mind that Emui has no app drawer. Updates are slow compared to Sony. Limited custom Roms if you are in to that. I would suggest reading the owner's impressions thread to see how others like the phone and the pros and cons for them.

Thanks. I primarily use my phone for social stuff like Facebook and Whatsapp (though barely use the camera), listening to Music, and heavy gaming, like GTA San Andreas (which i've heard runs extremely well on max settings (because of the mali GPU in the mate 7) compared to Snapdragon devices, where they lag on max,) and Asphalt 8. I don't care about updates or custom roms ever since Xposed. Can always stick an AOSP based launcher on top, and that would probably be the first thing I do if I do this device. Don't care about updates that much. My main, biggest gripe of the Huawei is the screen color saturation, they look bland compared to other flagships. Anybody figure out anything to fix that? My Nexus 4 had the same problem, but after using a custom kernel with gamma controls the screen just felt like something else completely. I got spoiled by the beautifully saturated colors of my N4 after calibration, and don't want a bland screen. The Z3 is better in this regard - its not the most saturated screen but its miles better than the mate 7 in that regard. Why can't Huawei calibrate their screens properly out of the box!
Colors are great, Screen doesn't look washed at all. First go and see the phone live in a showroom.
The phone it's not laggy.
But if you are a heavy gamer don't expect to get 10 hours screen on time with neither one. 5-6 hours maybe, and with brightness set on auto.
8 hours screen on time it't the best that I got with mate7( dual sim version).
Sony are not quick to update their phones also, just one month ago they updated z3 to lolipop.

I saw the Mate 7 irl for some reason I think it was washed out... maybe it's just my imagination :silly: i'll try to check it out again in a store
In all honesty wait for Mate 8 it will be released soon most likely.
And also I heard news today that Note 5 most likely will be released in July too...
Mate 7 will most likely drop even more in price for that reason It might be attractive for some though.
It still a good phone for the price.
If you wait for a bit more... You can get almost all of the last years flagships for less after july or august.

Please tell me after Note 5 and mate 8 and D8 what the hell other devices are worth waiting for ?
as what I know there are known.. unless you want an iphone 6s
The reason Note 5 will be released more early is that they want to get it out before Iphone 6s the big version.
Also Samsung have said the development has gone faster the expected with Note 5.
Do you mean paper releases like oneplus1 ?
or the new bezelless oppo find ?

The prices have already come down enough for them to be in my price range for all of last year's flagships, so that doesn't matter to me anymore. Its just these three phones which I have narrowed it down to because of my personal preferences
If some sort of confirmation or leak about a huawei nexus, or mate 8 or oneplus two gets released by the end of June then I think i'll wait if I like, otherwise i'll just take one of these phones, because right now i've been with a Lenovo A706 (some cheap budget android phone that came free with my new laptop) because my nexus 4 crapped out on me a year ago, and this lenovo is horrendously slow, bad battery life bad everything basically
Note 5 (and iPhone 6/6S) will be too expensive for my price range (my price range is ~1700 AED), and I haven't liked Samsung's designs since the S2/Galaxy Nexus, because of the colored, pattern bezels, (just want deep black) which is also the main reason why I won't consider the Note 4, even though it has better specs overall (and that LOVELY amoled screen) and is in my price range. I'm very picky with my devices, because I only change once every 3-4 years.
Im looking to upgrade from a Nexus 6 to either a 6P or Mate 8. I just found this phone this morning and looks interesting. What do you think of this phone vs the 6P? Thanks for your opinions.
I have both. I came from a nexus 6. They're both great phones. My only sadness with this phone is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. As much as I really hate that, I can't put this phone down. Battery life with heavy use I'm still putting down average 6-7 hours screen on time. The 6p is pretty solid of a phone too but I'll be giving it to my gf since the mate 8 serves more than enough of its purpose.
Hopefully one day maybe we get an aosp ROM

i would like an aosp/CM rom as well. my problem with my N6 is battery life. i heard the 6P is better and seems like this is even better than that. i have been reading on here about issues people have been having with the phone being in chinese and issues with notifications and such. guess i need to decide if the lack of aosp with the other issues will be something i can live with for now.
No problems with notification for me and no Chinese problems either. People probably bought a Chinese model and are complaining about Chinese being on it. Go figure. And also coming from a nexus 6 I only have up due to screen being broken and unable to repair it at the moment, this fits even better in hand than the nexus 6. Solid as hell. Like I said, my only complaint is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. So far I'm able to live with it. If it gets too much, I'll serve my nexus 6 back to the States for repair. Not necessary though considering the hell of an upgrade this phone is
well, most issues and complaints here actually arise because people are too lazy to read as for custom roms, the ball started rolling on that we already have twrp, unlocked bootloader, decrypted boot image and root capability. first dev is also already working on a custom rom, so im pretty optimistic for the near future
sure, development will never get as expansive as with the nexus 6P, but hey, its a nexus
u gotta decide whats important to you: mate 8 trumps everything concerning cpu performance (even upcoming s820 according to benches thus far) and battery life. if gpu performance is important to you though, the 6P is definitely more performant, although not massively due to the higher screen resolution vs. the mate 8.
another important point: screen vs body ratio! iphone 6s plus / nexus 6p / mate 8 are all the same size, give or take 1-2mm. difference being:
iphone 5.5 inch display
nexus 5.7 inch display
mate 8 friggin 6 inch display
coming from the nexus 6 ull be surprised to have such a "small" device sport the same screen size at way smaller dimensions
and i can say the screen is super sharp, has great colors and is briiiight as heck, everything u can want in a good screen
just my 2c on the matter...

Another 2 plus points for the Mate 8 that people don't give much importance but for me are relevant are the fm radio and sd card slot.
yes! i was pleasantly surprised to see the fm radio functionality
I have both and hands down the mate 8 is the winner. I got the mocha brown 64GB 4GB ram and it flies. Had notification issues with the Chinese Rom so I just converted to international and now no problems. I listen to a lot of music and this goes a lot louder and quality is much clearer. Camera seems good but I'll be testing it more over the next few days. 6p is going on eBay.

Hey,
please ask questions if you have any, I gladly will answer.
For the specs of the phone and the shop I got it from look at the following links.
Mod Edit
This review will cover:
- Build quality
- Camera quality
- Day to day performance
- Battery life
- MIUI vs AOSP
- Verdict
Some background information:
Tested for one week ongoing, the Redmi Note 4 replaced the Moto G4 Plus. The Moto G4 Plus is more expensive but not more appealing.
The build quality:
Absolutely great.
Xiaomi does make good phones, they look good, they feel good, the Redmi Note 4 is no exception. It's a solid metal body phone, with a fast unlocking fingerprint sensor on the back. The screen is big, the colors on it are nice and so is the brightness.
The HTC antenna lines (iPhone copied this from HTC), look good on the Redmi Note 4, signal strength is decent. But make sure the phone has your desired 4G bands, before buying.
Camera quality:
I like it.
That's a tricky topic, it's very situational and depends upon opinions. Here is mine: It's good enough, great for the money, but please judge yourself. Later there will be a Redmi Note 4 vs Mi5 vs Moto G4 Plus camera comparison. Click it to make it big.

Day to day performance:
The Helio X20, a hungry monster if you want it to be.
In Antutu and other the benchmarks the Helio X20 has pretty awesome performance, but such means nothing for day to day use, so how does it perform? It's not a Snapdragon 820 or 821, no that's not what you shall expect.
The flagship MTK Helio X20 is at the level of a SD 617 or 650, it's hard to tell, but doesn't matter. The performance is good enough you won't wish for more throughout the day. But don't have it in performance mode, this mode will eat up your battery fast, very fast!
Battery life:
Just huge, 4100mAh is huge.
Two days of heavy social media and surfing is normal, you don't have to worry about battery backup, quick charging works fine. I do wish all phones start to have huge batteries.
MIUI vs AOSP:
MIUI is feature rich, colorful and gets updates on regular base. But ASOP (that's stock Android) is faster, and will always be the fastest Android available.
Verdict:
Should you buy it, for let's say 165$? -> yes; Should you buy it for let's say 195$? -> yes. (It's on sale right now.)The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is a sweet little thing, good quality, decent specs on paper. Other phone manufactures will have a hard time to compete, this device is sold very cheap but offers much. Give it a thought and ask a question if you have any.
The last question: Where to buy?
Well that's a good question, there are countless Chinese resellers out. Some are scam, some are nice, some are cheap and bad, some are cheap and good... it's difficult. It sucks that Xiaomi does not sell to international customers directly.
When you decide to buy the phone, you have to decide on a Chinese reseller, choose wisely. I did get this phone from Gearbest, shipping was fast, service was good.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4
An honest review.
Hey,
please ask questions if you have any, I gladly will answer.
For the specs of the phone and the shop I got it from look at the following links.
Mod Edit
This review will cover:
- Build quality
- Camera quality
- Day to day performance
- Battery life
- MIUI vs ASOP

Thanks for your review, photos look really good, the stunning locations certainly help too! Was there any post editing or are they as they were shot? On auto on the stock cam? To be honest it looks good enough for day to day stuff, I wouldn't call myself a photographer but need to take good shots of my kids and like to photograph anything else nice when opportunity arises.
I've pretty much convinced myself to get this phone now, just a small niggle to get the redmi note 3 pro purely for custom rom options, but part of me isn't that bothered as I've used the last couple of phones as is and there seems to be plenty of customisation options in miui to tinker about with.

Have you tried using an OTG USB drive? I've seen some reviews say it's not supported and on another I seen someone plug in a flash drive and it seemed to work fine.

Dunno about OTG, didn't try it and don't have one.

Ya I get you the Redmi Note 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 4 is a tough choice.
usb otg works.. had try it with 3 of my otg and it works like a charm.
So do you think its worth it coming from a gs4? You're saying MIUI is not better than AOSP wich I am currently using, and getting great performance but terrible battery life. Also you compare the proccesor with a mid range snapdragon, let us not forget that the s4 was a flagship in it's release. So what do you think?

Hey,
thank you for asking a question.
Samsung uses TouchWiz what is "as slow as" MIUI is.
Did you install ASOP as a custom ROM? if that's the case you never got the full true ASOP speed.
---
My girlfriend only had true ASOP devices and now is happy with the Redmi Note 4, she keeps it as her daily driver.
(I used it for a couple of days and then she took it, I do have a Mi 5 as my daily driver.)
She used:
- 2 years Google Nexus 5, until the battery broke.
- some months the Moto G4 Plus she liked the battery, but wasn't happy with it in general.
Both devices are very sleek and fast true ASOP devices, such will always be faster then Samsung, Xiaomi or others.
However! She keeps on using the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and the Moto G4 Plus just lays around unused.
I asked her about the speed and she said: The Moto G4 Plus was faster... but this doesn't make her use it.
Or in other words, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is fast enough to be a daily driver, that's for sure.
----
Back on topic.
Ya the Helio X20 is a middle range SoC, the problem is that 10 cores are nice on paper, but the Software can't use it.
This means: It's neither advantage nor disadvantage to have 10 cores... it's just like having 6 or 8 of it (because of the software behind).
If you only used Samsungs Touchwiz thing, you can switch to MIUI, the performance difference won't be much. (Things will look different though, icon and style things.)

All righty, so summing up=its not much of a difference compared with touchwiz. I think I'll buy this one instead of the G4 plus wich was an option too, I need something durable. Thank you!! :good:

Please keep in mind that all phones suck at low lights, all but maybe the Samsung S7, iPhone 7 and google Pixel... but apart from those super super expensive phones pretty much all phones suck at low lights.
(And I live in Tromsø, far up in the north where it's dark half of the year, I am used to having low lights.)

will buy this later this week, hope to have the same feel.
Nice review, thanks for taking the time to write it.
Just wondering if the camera supports camera2 API? Also, I've read it has NFC, is this correct? Oh, are you still doing the comparison to the G4 Plus?
Thanks for any replies.

Yeah do yourself a favour & buy one!! I'm more than impressed with mine & I know I would be paying double that for something even close locally.
As for that price I think it's good, it's what I payed 2 weeks ago but if you decide to go with express shipping that's where they will differ a little & I also got a soft gel tpu case, a tempered glass protector & a flip case thrown in as gifts so thats something to look for.

What is your screen on time? Mine is like 4 hours per charge. I only use my redmi note 4 for social media and youtube. I have to charge my phone twice to survive a day. How could you last 2days with social media? Is there something wrong with my device. Got it 2 days ago. I have the 64gb variant. Please help

Huawei Mate 9 have been officially presented, did it meet your expectations will you upgrade to it from your mate 8 ?
For me, it's a No
The pro version is simply too expensive and I personally dislike the front button
The normal version, camera aside, is more software improvement than hardware. For me the double leica camera is not enough reason for changing

Good said, I agree with you, they have done a lot with the software this year, the physical look on mate 9 looks very uninspiring, even their honor 8 looks superior, I would prefer the same back as honor 8.
The camera bump looks disgusting.. it is much about how the camere will live up to the expectations.
I wish it had 3 in one sim/sd slot like they have in some honor devices, most people most use SD card so then they can not use the dual sim functionality.
i am disspointed there is no amoled screen, to be honest I expected 2k amoled this time.. to make it daydream and VR ready.
They could make the smartphone thicker to make bigger battery to compensate for a more high resolution screen and also to get rid of the camera bump.
Personally I have not decided what to buy, it is this against Mi Mix for me, mi mix have **** camera.. that is the main difference..I also think EMUI 5.0 is better in the software department then MIUI.
I wish the price would be little better.
I do not like the Porshe version that much despite the price, 5.5 is way to small, I had a 5.5 before and it is a big difference in experience during the 3 month I had it I bought a tablet, when I get a 6 inch I have no need for tablet.
as I said we will see about the camera.. it is the camera that will decide the true caliber of this device.
if not that Mate series is still one of the very few devices that have an acceptably battery time, not every one want to have a battery back always with you ..
I am extreme heavy user, with a screen on time with about 8 hours per day sometimes more..
I bought mate 8 only about 3 months ago, and I feel if Mate 8 get EMUI 5.0 it would feel reborn again..so not sure how I will do..
I know from past experience the prices of Mate devices are kind of static so there is no reason to wait 6 months to buy it, if you are going to buy it, buy it as soon as possible since the price will not get lower with time.
Just for cpu upgrade, I won't upgrade to Mate 9
Porche edition, out of reach
You should become their designer..hehehe

Not worth for now. Its not Samsung that you HAVE TO upgrade ahahha
Mate 8 still my no.1 !
I am waiting on my Phab 2 Pro to come Tuesday..I have the Mate 8, then got Mi Max, and then got Honor Note 8..sold both of them and went back to the Mate 8 only because of 4G coverage and the Mate 8 is definitely a top phone but I wanted a bigger phone that have great specs as well as full LTE coverage..I can honestly say the Mate 8 is probably the best phone I ever had
Agree
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
reasons for upgrading would be restricted to: significantly higher gpu performance / double camera. thats it. and if youre a user focussing on those two departments, u wouldnt have gotten the mate 8 in the first place so its kind of a moot point to go from mate 8 to mate 9, unless ure just OCD about having the latest and greatest while not giving a crap about cost ^^

I paid 300 euros for this Mate 8 yesterday... it was new..only NXT-DL00... but with your help (thanks again!!) I hope to 'convert' it to an International one... I knew there would be a catch for 300...oh well
Mate 9? Hmm maybe next year when the prices drop hahah... the Porsche Edition is definitely NOT worth it if you ask me, that even makes Apple phones seem cheap lol...
No, because I just bought the 8.
I used the Mate2 for over 2 years, because I thought it was a good value.
When the 8 was talked about last summer, I looked at it, but when the price was announced,
I said nope, too expensive. I waited...
Late this summer, with the 9 coming, I started watching the price on the 8 drop. When it reached a
level I thought for me, was a good value, I bought it.
"But, you didn't get the newest software, newest camera bla bla bla."
So? I ran the Mate2 on JB for over a year before LL came around, and still have LL on it now. Latest
and greatest doesn't concern me. As for the camera on the 9? If I really want to take a photograph,
I'll grab my dSLR. I only use the smartphone camera to record work related stuff, mainly close up
photos. I don't play games on my phone, so super duper graphics pixel peeping stuff doesn't concern
me. Oh, 10 years ago, I flashed every new rom that came along for my HTC phones, but things are
so stable today, that to me, a smartphone is a "toaster oven". You turn it on and use it. I don't bother
rooting or anything else. If stock is stable, I leave it alone.
My phone is my job lifeline. All of my service tickets are done on a web based app, as are remote connections
to the machines I work on and monitor. I'm a field service supervisor, so I'm constantly on the phone with
other techs, and factory reps. Around 2,000 minutes on the phone, hundreds of emails, texts, photos, along
with a lot of streaming audio. It has to be a good value, and have a good battery, which is why I got the
Mate2 when I did.
The 9 looks like a good phone, but it is priced like a lot of "flagships"....to high for reality. In a year, if I've
got an itch for something new, when the mate10 is announced, I'll start watching the price of the 9. If it falls
to what I think it is worth to me, I'll buy one.
No, mate 8 was my first Android after iPhone 3,4 and 5 and lumia 930. I liked the big screen of the mate 8 a lot, but i don't like that googles only reason for making android is user data.
And the apps want way to much permissions.
In may i updated to b320. because i didn't get ota updates and i read articles, stating b320 would be the next ota.
Well it wasn't and i didn't get any update since may.
The going back to mui 4.0 routine, is to much for me, i have so many offline maps on the device for example, that it would take several hours to download them again.
And where to go? There isn't any update for mui 4.1 at all, for six month now.
So the main reasons for leaving Huawei is, that i just see regular updates for other regions in the world and nothing here. L29.
I live in Germany and all companies including, huawei, lg, htc samsung only sell the smaller Ram versions here, like 32 gb and 64 next year if i am lucky.
So i am thinking about a wopping 256 gb iphone 7 plus and never messing with small ram and sd card again.
it looks like Huawei will compete with Mi Mix , wow what a dream, maybe it will be what Mi Mix should have been since it have some flaws..such as bad camera.

No upgrade. The Mate 8 battery life is amazing as it is. Plus, conversion rate to CAD will probably cost $1k after taxes for the top model. If you already own the mate 8, I see no need to upgrade.

The question goes to those who have experience with both the Huawei mate 20 Pro and the Samsung S10 +.
I myself come from Oneplus 6 and have preordered the S10 + (Exynos, Ceramic black, 512 GB) to get the additional earbuds. Now Samsung has informed me that this preorder - promotion cannot be claimed for me, because I ordered via Amazon (although this was advertised on Amazon). "Relatively" seen the S10 + is therefore still too expensive (in fact that I now have to buy the ear buds additional). On the other hand the price of the S10+ has already fallen by about 100 €, so the "preorder" was without any sense for me.
Now I've considered two options. Either return the S10 + and buy it later (when it's cheaper) or consider the upcoming Huawei P30 pro.
Therefore I´m interested in experiences from those, who know Samsung and Huawei. I have to say that I am very satisfied with the S10 + itself. In particular, in the following points:
+ great feel and look, in Ceramic black it looks just fantastic and feels very high quality
+ display just great
+ battery drain (8-10h SOT over 1 1/2 days or about 5h SOT over 2 1/2 days)
+ All around functionality
+ beautiful user interface (dark theme, dialer...) and intuitive menu
+ camera. The raw files are only slightly better than the O6. The jpegs are more than ok.
+ Stereo sound and sound quality (especially sound enhancement setting for listening to music - not as good as viper4android, but sufficient and noticeably better than what I've known before)
+/- Overall speed, but only marginally faster than my OP6, wifi even much slower, but I can live with that.
+/- "bloat ware" incl. Bixby, in total not so useless
How does the Huawei mate 20 pro behave in these points - haptic, display, colors, user interface, quality, functionality, sound quality etc in terms of what I would expect with a Huawei 30 pro. Although this will certainly be a great smartphone, I'm a bit skeptical. Just because I'm really excited about Samsung for the first time.
Root is required for my choice (titanium backup and some other apps that require root). I really want to get away from custom roms. In this regard, I feel at Samsung for the first time really arrived - hence the interest or the question of the overall feeling at Huawei. I do not really care about the brands themselves, so I do not want to start any "fan boy" discussions.
I would be very thankful about your opinion or your experiences!

+ great feel and look, in Ceramic black it looks just fantastic and feels very high quality Ceramic Black is 1500 Euros (so is white) ; on the other hand, the rugged feel of Blue and Greeen Mate 20 Pro feel great , no prints , no grease
+ display just great I also like the S10 plus display, but I like Note 9 more and also Mate 20 Pro feels more vibrant (it totally depends on preference)
+ battery drain (8-10h SOT over 1 1/2 days or about 5h SOT over 2 1/2 days) : no flagship beats Mate 20 Pro in terms of battery life (this is kind of end of story, no BUTS), never feared I could remain uncovered
+ All around functionality Samsung is Better here, everything is done directly, no tweaks needed (except for the Infrared remote of the Huwaei, which I used)
+ beautiful user interface (dark theme, dialer...) and intuitive menu : Samsung better here, no doubt (except for the fact that Huawei supports large almost full screen caller images, while Samsung is stubborn again)
+ camera. The raw files are only slightly better than the O6. The jpegs are more than ok. : camera on Mate 20 Pro has no match. You should personally have both phones and see for yourself. The portraits dont have a match on any phone.
+ Stereo sound and sound quality (especially sound enhancement setting for listening to music - not as good as viper4android, but sufficient and noticeably better than what I've known before) : Sound quality better on S10 plus, finally fixed the loudness, now you can here the notifications ( I had to use Volume booster on Note 9)
+/- Overall speed, but only marginally faster than my OP6, wifi even much slower, but I can live with that. : Unnoticeable , both feel great and move fast
+/- "bloat ware" incl. Bixby, in total not so useless : Huawei doesnt have this issue.

Hey there man, I have answered point by point to your questions. I should also add a few "small" things :
- Huawei has better notifications: way better! With Samsung , when you dismiss the notifications from the bar, ALL app badges clear and you soon forget (of course) where you had unread notifs. This is the most annoying thing about Android 9 on Samsung. You can work around this by installing Microsoft Launcher.
- In my opinion the fingerprint reader on Mate 20 Pro is better (even if it is optical) and better placed. With Samsung you have to lower you finger too much and lose the grip on the phone
- on S10 family there is no notification LED , Samsung gave that up. I hope Huawei will not be that dumb with the P30. There is a workaround as well called Always on Edge.
In conclusion, I now have the S10 plus, selling the Mate 20 Pro. For MY needs (and only for that), Mate 20 Pro is the better phone. But I get bored from time to time, so here I am )
Cheers and good luck!

Thanks, where can I find your point by point answer? Searched the forum (of course), but without success.
Yes, I know about the other "issues" as I still have the S10+. Fingerprint reader is ok for me, and notification LED not that important for me. As I said I am very satisfied with the S10 +. Apart from the fact that my pre-order at the corresponding starting price was a flop I now also consider the Huawei flagship. Hence my interest explicitly in the above points.
Thanks again
EDIT: sorry, just saw your answers in your quote above - my fault

Hey man no worries, glad we share the same opinion to some point. Anyway, I am sure P30 pro will still have a better camera, cause once they started an algorithm, they will most probably stick to it. As for Samsung, the notifications stuff is driving me nuts, as it is the only manufacturer to do that and dismiss all/clear all BS. Other than that goodlooking and great phone , the S10 plus.

Once again your answers reflected, I would like to thank you for your effort. They confirm my assumptions.
On the battery life: I had never really problems and that of the S10 + is more than sufficient.
To the camera: this is really very important to me, but not at the expense of the overall package. I do not understand the good picture quality of the Huawei´s completely. How can it be so good with such a high-resolution sensor? I usually shoot with a Nikon D850, similar pixel count, but correspondingly large full-frame sensor. And apart from that, no smartphone lens can put that resolution on a sheet of paper. The Huawei P30 will have a 10x optical zoom. That's nice, but it also means that light has to pass through more lenses. All the more surprising how Huawei software succeeds in getting such good results.
The overall package: if there scores the S10 +, then the decision should be clear to me. I'll wait for the 26th of May and the following reviews; but for the first time I'm really impressed with Samsung's operating system. By that I mean the functionality as a whole, the display and sound quality. The latter is even with Bluetooth headphones better than anything I've ever known (as I said, except for viper4android).
Let's wait and see. What a pity that I do not have the opportunity to take a Huawei in my own hands.
Correct, not much else to add. As for the lenses, I dont understand the whole process, and the whole aperture stuff (I do, but not in detail), but I see the final result, which is great. And yes, that is what excited me too, cause last year was boring from the Samsung perspective...this series of new phones, they did it! And I ve been using the Galaxy series since S1. So...we ll see what happens on 26Mar and after . Take care!
I would wait and see for the p30pro.
I use both at the moment. Honestly aside from the crazy Samsung display I'm kind of disappointed...
Almost the same camera setup as s9+ and note9.
8nm (exynose) Vs 7nm on the SD and m20p version.
Battery is not really stable (I've had mine since the 8th: you can see various reports on this here on XDA and Reddit (apparently the SD doesn't have that much issues).
Overall a good package, honestly. But I also think they could of done better...and still the same 15w charger!! Coming from a 6T and M20p....it's crazy they don't have more powerful chargers today!
Huawei is really innovating now (taking risks), Sammy is securing their position and oneplus is growing fast and being very open minded. Three different approaches.
Root...apparently there are issues with the new rooting procedure on exynos. But I guess we'll have to wait on JohnWu. Forget that on Huawei's side...getting root is hell, even bootloader unlocked. Only some can do it, but you need to go the funkyhuawei path.
Honestly, I don't need root anymore, phones are mostly optimized, not like in the past. And endurance is better every year. It takes me around 1h30 configure/reload all.my apps on a new phone.
Camera...hmm, that was my only weak point on the 6T, tried all the versions of the gcam, the sensor was to small, lenses not good...so even if you put a Porsche engine in a fiat500, it's a fiat500.
Huawei cameras you or love them or hate them. BUT apparently Huawei is coming out with the new Sony sensor, ToF, 10x optical, and most probably some other surprises...I just hoped OEMs would understand how important is a monochrome lense for all that it could bring in. Till today portraits are better on the p20pro than the m20pro...but that's my opinion, except of course the pixel 3XL. Which for me must have a voodoo magic camera processing system.
Notifications, i was really pissed with the m20p...but at least it has a led (lol). There were bugs here in there..but Voilà, no perfect phones exist. Annoyed to double tap on my screen on the S10+ to see my notifications (I don't use AOD, 1% battery/hour).
Battery, CPU. I've realised that a phone today needs to learn from you (your habits, app usage, etc..) and here the Kirin 980 & pie is a monster setup...it really does something in the back ground. Not sure about the S10+ yet...I need to give it time. But battery, till.today nothing gets close to me m20p.
The new display on the p30p is reported to be a Samsung...so it might be great. Let's see.. 4 days to go.
In the meantime check this out, people are saying it was done on the p30p (no idea how long they took.on post processing, but still..impressive!)
No idea why the YouTube link isn't working...
Just in short summary: after Huawei Honor 7 and P10 I will never everly ever go back to Huawei absolutely ever again. Not in this lifetime anyway...

I have Android Pie on my S8+ and notifications don't behave like that. If i clear a new message notifaction I still have app icon badges that show me the number of messages I have not read.

Could I ask you what was wrong with Huawei (and which model) in your opinion?
The P30 pro comes in at 999 euro with a year old SoC, widely hated skin, a second class Samsung 1080p display(no excuse for the price).
Even ignoring the fact that the S10+ is a superior all-round package (even more with the 10% student discount) I think Huawei is shooting itself in the foot by trying to jump on the ultra flagship pricing train, their reputation has been thanks to the good value they offered, which is gone.
I spent a day comparing my phone with a relative's mate 20 pro, the latter is a very ambitious device but it falls short in every category except face recognition, which I don't use and has been proven to be a flawed protocol on even the most secured devices.
If you check my guide you can see my 15h SoT result and how it can be achieved, the p20 pro has a theoretically bigger(100mah) battery yet it gets nowhere close due to the uncompetitive SoC and software.
Huawei doesn't and never will allow unlocked bootloaders, I wouldn't recommend their services even if they offered the best choices, they're still far from that and their anti-consumer behaviour needs to be heavily punished.

I only had bad experience with Huawei Honor 7 and P10. Not only did the hardware made my life into misery, but also the software (read EMUI). Honor 7 was an unfinished phone as it was beta, and P10s hardware went first crap (the battery bulked over time in my pocket so bad that you could see the battery cells because of the gap). So the Swedish repaircompany fixed it by replacing with new screen and battery but screwed up the dualcamera so it takes blurry pics which means shipping to service one extra time.
This Samsung, which is my first Samsung phone, is probably the best phone so far I ever had. I only can remember one phone that was this good (out of all phones I've had), and that was iPhone 5s. Had also Nexus 4 but here in Europe Google was cheap with only 16 GB ROM instead of 32. Shame...
Also, I'm still waiting for Android Pie for my Huawei P10 which will probably never come. And it doesn't matter since the EMUI would still get crap. And I'm questioning the Chinese company privacy for us users especially for that little storm last year. Not saying they are spying but I don't trust them on where my personal data will end up: in the hands of the company or their government.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience and that you are projecting so much negativity...everyone has their opinion. But just my 2cents : Huawei since the p10 or H7 have gone a long way. Thus the reason that they are the second biggest selling phone company today.. and heading up quickly to bite on Samsung in the next 2 years. Huawei's P20P, M20P & Kirin 980 have been hailed for innovation, build quality and picture quality. Now, if i could have Oxygen OS on a Huawei, that would be a dream come true.
Last point : the ones that had "confirmed" spying issues last year was not Huawei but Oneplus (i company that i really like NDLR). Also, just "FYI", Samsung sells Snapdragon phones right? Only in the US. Exynos in the rest (except China). Oneplus, also a chinese company, who also should abide by the so called chinese law : "that companies need to help the government if needed". Are in the USA... ask yourself this : "oneplus + snapdragon = US, Huawei + Kirin = not US". Why? And hum, i think that there is a kind of "Trade War" happening right now, right? When you want to hurt a country : hit it's economy, who's one of the biggest company in China? Huawei. And this week Huawei filled for a lawsuit against the US government, that their restrictions are non "constitutional".
Any how, sorry i hijacked your thread to clarify some things about this "China is spying on us" BS. All government are spying on everyone.
Now let's see this p30p, there are gonna be haters and lovers... like every brand.
Peace out.

Essentially, I agree with you. However, I think that a lot has happened since the P10. Anyway, I agree that from a price point of view, Huawei's move is more than brave, even though I think you already get what you pay for. After all, with the P30 pro seems to come a sonos speaker for free (pre-order) .. if you need it. Yes, I know, this argument is rather weak ..

I know that many do espionage. Where do you think your fingerprints have been storaged since the iPhone 5s and up? Not at Foxconn or China... But I rather give my fingerprints to US and South Korea than China - if I need to choose.
Well, I have tasted two Huawei-models, also P9. P20 just a bit, not bad phone but the camera wasn't captured natural photos. Seemed like they were afteredited with layers automatically which they are (if you read some reviews). If I want to edit photos I refuse that the phone edit it FOR me. And some photos don't need to be edited at all because you will ruin them.
My P10 was an OK phone, but comparing with this Samsung it's like having a phone out of completely different galaxy. And one more thing to clarify: I don't hate Huawei, but I don't like shady business no matter what company.

Huawei has a history of lying about video footages or photos they made their brand ambassadors advertise, we as users have absolutely no reason to trust anything, they kept using DSLR content and splashing "taken with Huawei" on it, unacceptable.
The video in the link is just an example of reverse advertising, I expect the upcoming Huawei P30 pro's camera to be criticized in every single comparison that isn't sponsored, as it happened every time.

I just want premium, and now that also Huawei-phones costs almost as same amount as Samsung's, I would be silly if I picked Huawei imo. Surely have Huawei evolved since the P10 but I simply can't live with the EMUI anymore. And bringing Nova-launcher won't make me 100% satisfied either...
I really love new SGS10+ even with Exynos-chip that entire world have due to licensing issue (read 1993 contract between Sammy and Qualcy). Can say it works well, not bad att all. Fast too. [emoji6]
