Unable to copy files to internal storage. - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently formatted my phone and put everything as before but now I am unable to move any files in the internal storages in my nexus 6p. Whenever I try pasting any file in the storage, the usual windows warning sound rings up and then nothing happens. No dialogues, nothing comes up.
The phone is running latest Android 7.1.1 with twrp 3.0.2.3 and a pixel mod provided here without the addons. https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/themes-apps/zip-pixel-mod-t3505693
For coming up with this after format, I followed usual procedure, sideloaded the build, flashed twrp using adb and then flashed the mod using twrp.
Before formatting, I used the same config and the phone worked perfectly. I have no idea what caused this problem and I am unable to find any solution. Is it something with the permissions? or something else? How do I solve this issue??

Is USB debugging enabled in developer options? Is a notification coming up on the phone that says USB charging when you plug it into your computer? Or are you talking about moving files within the phone from one location to another?

Yes everything is taken care of. USB debugging enabled, the USB charging option is set to transfer files between pc and the phone..The MTP protocol. All I was trying to do was to put in some some music files and equaliser presents I saved prior to format back to the phone.

Does the phone actually show up as a drive on your computer?

Yes sir it does. I can access any file or folder in the storage just like any other phone.

This is a long shot but you haven't added any new drivers to your computer lately? I had an issue with a drive conflict causing something like you are describing but that was a long time ago. That might not happen anymore. Have you tried updating the Google USB driver or using Huawei 's program for phone computer access?

I didn't add any drivers to the pc but yes I did update the Android SDK packages. I don't remember what all packs were updated but I don't think that any USB driver got updated at that time...
Is it because of some driver issue?

You might want to use a program like Root Explorer to check if the read/write permissions are set properly either in the specific folder you are trying to copy files to or in the parent folder for your phone storage.

[SOLVED] This device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.

Whenever I plug in my S4, it seems fine. Drivers are installed correctly since I rooted fine and that also means the USB is fine.
The problem arises when I try to copy any file to my phone. It plugs in, allows me to switch it between Camera (PTP) and Media Device (MTP). I have tried turning USB Debugging on and off when transferring files and on both Camera and Media Device.
When I copy a device into any folder or the main card or phone directory, it starts copying, the green bar stops and then after a second the following message comes up:
"This device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected."
It allows me to Stop copying or Skip this file... which is the only file.
Any ideas on what is causing this and what I could do to try and fix it?
Use a different cable or usb port. Something is causing the phone to stop communicating with the computer. Also, make sure you don't have any power saving features enabled that may be turning of power to the usb port in Windows.
I've tried that and it still has the same issue.
Just unrooted and performed a factory reset. My phone is totally stock and doesn't allow me to copy any files onto it.
Does anyone have any idea?
[SOLVED]
Solved this by taking out my SD card, restarting my phone, putting the SD card back in and formatting it.
You can format by going into Settings > More > Storage > (Scroll to bottom) Format SD Card
That's right, it was not easy to find... Thanks!

Effectively, you have to turn off the ENERGIE ECO on your Tablet.
another way to see that the SDCARD is not responding, is to browse inside the Folders. They seems to be empty.

i was getting the same problem,so i uninstalled the driver and then connected the mobile .
secondly i also have installed wondershare mogile go on my mobile and pc , so when i connected my mobile to pc after uninstalling the driver the mobile go pop up came up for usb installation and it asked for installing the usb driver for mobile go ,it asked me to swithonn the usb debugging ,and it installed the driver then it just worked fine .
may be it was a mobile go problem (any software) or Driver Problem but it helped so no need to format, reset or remove your card . just try this and tell wat helped.thank you.
This is a Driver Problem.
All I had to do was plug the usb cable into the usb port that i installed the device to. My PC won't read the phone right from any other USB port. I hope this helps
Im not sure if this thread is too old or not, just wanted to give my imput on the matter, so I ran into this issue just today but i had never had it before, turns out it was the file, I did everything I could think of : played around again with the USB port selective suspend feature and it wasnt that, plugged into other USP ports, want that, untill I tried copying something else and BINGO, the file got copied, so I tried with a folder full of different files like word, excell APK files etc...and they all went through fine, so next i tried a lange file a movie and it went though fine. the file in question was a nighlyROM apparently it was corrupt, or didnt download properly. So my suggestion is to check if you can copy or transfer other files.:good:
it didn't work for me
you have to fix permissions
it happened to me on my gt-n7100 (Galaxy Note II ) with android 4.4.2, you have to install TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project see how then reboot into recovery select ''advanced'' hen ''Fix Permissions'' that worked for me
you can use chmod to fix this it works too

This did it for me. I already had TWRP installed and after quickly doing this I was able to copy to/from my SD card. It also fixed the problems I was having copying/moving things from internal storage to the SD card using ES.
FYI, It also caused XPosed to break until I rebooted again.
THANKS SO MUCH!
Doing this now, thanks so much! Wonder why that happens.
Didn't work unfortunately. Other files seem to be moving over just fine. All except this 1.6GB file (checked space, that's not the issue), where I cannot send either to Internal or SD Card. Maybe it's a corrupt file?

Yeah! Exactly! I was trying to copy an unfinished movie that was still downloading in torrent. It was stuck at 98.8% and it was playing fine in my computer. Only this file was not copying in my phone. and anyways i couldn't get it to my phone because it never downloaded 100% due to lack of peers, and i could copy other files. This means MTP mode does not allow to copy corrupt or half files and there is no mass transfer mode now a days...
---------- Post added at 08:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:52 PM ----------
I was able to copy the unfinished file by mounting External SD in TWRP btw....

I've changed the file type which was a (.zip) to a (.mp3) and transferred the file. It worked.

This is the answer to this thread!
Guys this is dumb but instead of moving the file that wasn't working onto my SD card, I just moved it to my phone and it worked the first time.
Another fix - go to usb options, set to use as USB 3.0 device
Since this is the first thread that seems to come up when I googled the issue, I'll post the fix here...
though I'm on a Galaxy S5, not the S4. I'm guessing it's the same deal.
When I plugged in with USB and tried to copy a 1.2 gig file, it gave me the error message, though many large files had worked in the past.
I tried a reboot, pulling the SD card, and making sure my USB hubs didn't have the "let windows shut this off to save power" option checked.
So I tried pressing the "Connected as a media device via USB" notification when I slide the notification bar down. There are 3 options, MTP, PTP, or USB 3.0.
I changed to USB 3.0 and the file copied fine, and much faster too, about 1.5 or 2 minutes for 1.2 gigs.
This actually works.... - Raj

Need Help! Deleted Photo Album (Baby pics missing)

I can't believe I did it, must of accidentally deleted photo album. Stayed up for hours last night and all of this morning trying to find a way to recover the album. I have a bunch of my daughter's pics in that album and I really need them back.
I have a Nexus 4 with 4.4.2 loaded on it and the phone is not rooted. I have been trying to find a way to root the phone without wiping the data so I can try to use diskdigger to recover what I can. I don't know if there is a way with this version, but if there is and you know, please post. If you can show me a way and it is successful you will have some paypal money coming your way. Thanks in advance!

My first response would be to use disk digger like you said, but as much as rooting is a wonderful thing, I don't think it is needed in this case.
Disk digger is actually derived from a desktop app of the same name, that does the same thing with desktop and laptop hard drives.
Web page here
http://diskdigger.org/
If you connect your phone to your computer as external storage then you should be able to run the program on the computer but targeted at your phone, hence recovering your lost files.
Note: if this works then LOTS of files will be found, (including ones you never knew were even on your phone) so be prepared to search through them all.
I really hope this helps, I know what it is like to loose precious files, safe to say you should backup everything valuable from hereon
Let me know what happens either way and I will try and help if it does not work

yeah, just tried the pc software for diskdigger, phone doesn't show in list. Has a advanced tab, but only lets you choose .vhd files it looks like. If only you could get the phone into a vhd.
OK, so the first question is if the phone is mounted correctly, does it show in 'my computer' and when double clicked on can you see files?
Next question is if you are using the .exe correctly, take a look at this tutorial: http://diskdigger.org/node/1025
I'm sorry if this sounds condescending, but I don't know your experience with computers

LOL...no problem. Been a systems admin for about 10 years. Anywho, yeah, this is the nexus 4 so it only has internal memory, no sd card. I can see the phone in my computer, but there is no drive letter assigned, apparently that changed in 4.3 up through 4.4.2, which I am on. So what that means is no mass storage option where drive letter gets assigned, so routine recovery software can't read it as an attached drive.

Hmmm, you should still be able to mount as external storage, I have done so before on that android version.
First thing then is if USB debugging is enabled, this will be in your settings under developer options and should not require root.
Then it is a question of whether your computers drivers are correct, android has a tendency of not liking to do drivers correctly, I used PDAnet to install the correct USB drivers (note these are different to the ADB drivers which you don't need)
Get back to me with the results of those 2 points

Yeah, I had developer options enabled and USB Debugging mode on, maybe it could be a driver issue. I tried PDAnet and that didn't seem to update the drivers for the phone. The device shows okay in device manager, no exclamation point, shows as Nexus 4 as well and the driver seems to be a Microsoft driver. Are you sure you had the same android version? Everywhere I look any version after 4.2.2 cannot be used as a mass storage device because of the MTP-PTP change in 4.3 and 4.4.

I am on 4.4.3 now, and have the phone connected fine right now, have you tried switching between MTP and PTP?
Note: I am on MTP and it is working.
I am sure there is a problem with something to do with connecting your nexus to the computer, as mine is doing so right now. If we can resolve that issue and access the internal storage then you should be able to then recover the files with disk digger.
My best guess would be a driver issue as android has never really played well when trying to set up drivers. But like you said the computer is recognising it correctly. I think perhaps testing the drivers connection my be the next step, use ADB with the command 'adb devices' (without quotes) to see the devices connected to the adb server. If nothing comes up then we may be able to start troubleshooting :good:
Perhaps ADB is the difference, i have it installed and sorted, do you?
If you have never used ADB before, here is a good place to get started and here is another mention of the drivers, perhaps another attempt may be worth a try, with a clean intall
Safe to say in my drivers list it is connected under android device > android composite ADB interface.
Actually yes, thinking about what i have just written i am confident it is ADB and drivers, you should not be connected with Microsoft drivers, they are the automatically installed ones and never work. Follow the guides above (and perhaps some googling) to get the proper drivers and ADB set up, once you think you have test it with the 'adb devises' command, once you get it returning a serial number for your phone then take a look in 'My Computer' again and see if the storage is visible.
nexus 4 only support MTP, not USB Mass Storage, so can't be mounted with a drive letter and can't be used with undelete software . If you know any working solution without root - please tell us, but test first yourself before writing please
P.S. you are on 4.4.3 ?

My most sincere apologies, i was mistaking the mounted MTP device for the mounted drive, i now see what you mean.
In this case rooting is your only option, you need to run the file recovery natively.
I had hoped that this would not be necessary as unfortunately the rooting process will perform a lot of write operations so you must be prepared for some of your images to become corrupted or incomplete, (hence why i wanted to attempt other options) this is just the risk that you will have to face. How many will be damaged is difficult to say.
So use one of the many tool-kits or root manually, install the disk digger APK and you are good to go.
to root you will need to unlock phone bootloader and that will wipe all your device ...

Some Files Not Showing After Update to 6.0.1

I am not rooted. I can access my phone through Windows 10. But I cannot see all my folders. The 2 that I am having problems with are my Camera and Music folders. Some of the files are there. When I use ES File Explorer I can see and access them fine. Right now I cannot pull off any of the photos or videos I take. This all happend after upgrading to 6.0.1. I have tried 2 different cables and 2 different computers with the same results. I have made sure that USB Debugging is enabled. I also made sure that I had PTP and MTP enabled. Also upgraded to the latest 6P drivers for Windows 10. Any ideas?
I'm having this issue on 6.0. I'm thinking it was a Windows update that caused the problem rather than a Google one. Yes, I've got good drivers, stock cable, MTP. Tried on Win7/10, USB 2.0 and 3.0 The Music/Photo files/Folders are on the device, but unable to be seen via PC Explorer. If I try and copy an existing music subfolder from PC to the 6P's /Music folder, I get an error, but I can copy a folder to the 6p if it's not already there.

Same on Nexus 6P, on 6.0.1 (but not on 6.0). I'm trying to copy some photos to my PC (Windows 10) and my PC sees the DCIM folder but none of the files inside of it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers through Nexus root toolkit but still no luck I rebooted both the phone and my PC, no luck. It does let me put files into the DCIM folder and it can see them after disconnecting and reconnecting. I also tried MTP, PTP and USB debugging and none worked. I guess I'll wait for the next Android update and keep using pushbullet.
I'm having a similar issue except not on 6.0.1. Can't view photos I've taken last Sunday but all my November photos are showing via MTP. My moto x had this same issue where recent photos wouldn't show. My PC is running Ubuntu, not Windows.
I just performed a factory reset. Windows 10 now sees both folders. Hopefully they will roll out a fix soon.
All I did was change USB from charging to File Transfer and all my folders are showing in Windows 10, fully updated and my 6p on 6.0.1, just flashed it
This solution worked for me. Clean cache and data files for the external storage app and media storage app. After rebooting, the files will be rebuilt (may take a couple of minutes) and then you will see your files again. I did it and the 1st to show up was my music folder then all of the other folders. At first, I had no folders (kind of freaked me out) but they started to show up one by one. Good luck.

By doing this will you lose any of your files?
I didn't.
The 'Clean cache and data files for the external storage app and media storage app' solution worked for me on my Zenphone 2. Files didn't appeared right after reboot, took a couple minutes and they gradually showed up. Didn't lose anything.
Many thx!
Somehow digging up this "old" thread.
Tried above "Media Storage" and "External Storage" system apps data/cache wiping solution, ended up seeing even less folders/files on PC !
Real solution given today by @AzraelsKiss :
Reboot under recovery (TWRP for me, I guess other recoveries would just work the same), plug your phone into PC, all the phone's folders/files will be visible using PC file explorer just as it's an external HD !

Have tried installing Huawei drivers and same results.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm glad I searched a little more; I was about to start a thread but since my problem parallels yours fairly closely, I'll post here as well.
My problem has been trying to transfer nandroid backups from my twrp folder onto my PC. My drivers are functional and everything; my PC has no problem identifying my nexus, and my nexus is available (once plugged into my PC) to be opened, where I can view the files. I simply went to my twrp folder where my backups were and I tried just dragging them into a folder I had created on my desktop.
At first it just gave me a short, simple error message. So I created a couple folders within this folder, each with the name of the corresponding backups I have saved on my phone. I tried copying the files one at a time, and realized it was the very first file (boot.something.win) that was the only one unable to be transferred... The other file sections from the backup seem to have no problem.
I ran into similar issues with my type-c flash drive when I tried moving the backups onto it. It left out the first file, and changed another one of the files-- I'll try and grab some picks, or at least find out specifically what changes were made.
Running resurrection remix 5.7.3 with elemental x kernel.
Boot your phone to recovery then plug it into the computer and then u can copy your TWRP Backup's to computer fine.
This is how I do it

Niiiice, yeah I will try that and see what happens. For some reason it wouldn't transfer to my type c flash drive i n recovery, but we'll see. Actually now that I think about it, I might not have ever gotten around to trying that yet, either.
'Preciate it brother.
Sometimes i cant get files to transfer. Ive had to bluetooth them.

File transfer not working properly

Hello guys, i've got some problem with file transfer both in pc to op5 and op5 to pc with USB, i don't know why but apparently the problem affect only medium to big files. I can transfer little files like jpg, while i have some problem with mp3, sometime work sometime not, if i insist generally work. If i try with huge files like the OTA now that i'm trying to upgrade the oxygen is not working at all. I suppose the drivers are properly installed since i can open the folders inside pc. Obviously the debug usb is active, i tryed to enable mtp in developer option (is normal that there isn't any mtp selection in the four transfer available? even if enabled mtp i still see "recharge" "file transfer" "photo transfer ptp" "midi"). I usually select file transfer, i don't even know what MIDI is and ptp is only about photos. The phone is rooted with the last official twrp and last magisk, the os is OOS 4.5.8. and is still encrypted. PC is with windows 10
edit: i can't even copy/paste those big files from a folder inside the phone to another one always in the phone.

Might be a long shot but try doing a simple restart of your phone and computer and see if that helps
