Hey everyone!
I got a new 8gb Nexus 4 a month ago for a great price and am using it now as my daily driver since I cracked my N5 and I am a bit bummed that it still hasn't received it's 5.0 update! It is already been nearly 2 months since they started rolling out!! My N5 already had it since the beginning of December. What is the hold-up? I don't know much about the system of ota rollouts (only that they start at about 1% of devices for the first week and in the next 2-3 they creep up to 25%, 50%, 75% and then the remaining 25%) but I am studying in the Czech Republic so I thought that it was effected by geographical location but I know people here already have 5.0 ota's on there N4s :/ So why haven't I got it? What is the problem? I am on 4.4.4 build number KTU84P....
What are my options to update manually? I don't want to use the Android SDK to update so are there any other options?? I know I could update flashing the factory images but can I do this without the SDK? I don't think the update will come and I don't want to wait any longer
Google 15 second adb install xda. That'll setup adb and fastboot on your pc. Then use fastboot to flash the factory image.

Hi, I've used the WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit to manually my Nexus 4 to lollipop.
If you follow the steps with this tool, it's very easy to update.

Hi! Thanks for the reply - where did you find this guide? And does the toolkit both unlock the boot loader and flash the factory images ?? If so any guide links?

Yes, with the tool you can unlock the bootloader, root your device and then install a stock rom.
I haven't followed a guide, the tool is very good explained, it's logical
Here is the thread about this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475

I rooted and customized my N4 without a PC. Follow these steps:
1) Download and install Towelroot. Once it installs and reboots u should be rooted.
2) Download SuperSU and update binary the normal way.
3) Next download BootUnlocker For Nexus Devices. Install and tap on unlock. U should reboot and when the "Google" boot logo shows up there should be a unlocked lock.
4) Download BusyBox and install
5) Download TWRP Manager and install the latest TWRP version for mako.
6) You're done, press volume down+power when u turn on your phone to get access to TWRP.
I can confirm, I did this myself and like u I was stuck running 4.4.4 and I am using SimpleAOSP 5.0.2 and in my opinion its a lot more stable than Stock L
BTW Google does plan on releasing 5.0 for N4 but since they have so much issues with the OS, the OTA is being delayed

You're joking right? The official Google release is on 5.0.1. And it's been out for a while now.

The 5.0.1 is very stable. There are a few little bugs in it but it's not so bad.
The battery life is okay, I use mine the whole day and on the end of the day he is like 15-20% remaining. Better than on Kit Kat.

You are asking questions that are really hard to define and VERY user-specific. For me personally, I have a Nexus 5 and my wife has a Nexus 4. Both units are completely stock and have never been rooted or messed with in any way. For us, 5.0+ has worked perfectly and has no major issues. I do not experience the "memory leak" that people scream about, and I get as good if not better battery life as I've ever gotten. I'm sure someone will immediately jump in and proclaim that I'm an "apologist" or a "Google fanboy" and that there are countless problems that are well documented and I'm just delusional. But for my wife and I, we simply haven't had any issues as daily users of the phone and the latest OS. For me, I didn't wait for the OTA, I sideloaded the updates and it was a VERY simple process. Hardest part was getting the drivers correct but once I figured that out, it was 10-15 minutes at most to upgrade each phone.
Ohh glad to hear that. My Nexus 5 performed the same I would say. Maybe even a tad better when compared to 4.4.4... Anyway glad to hear the N4 is the same (come to think if it, this phone has REALLY surprised me.. I initially skipped it and stuck with my Gnex until the N5 came out. But sadly I dropped that a few times while taking photos skiing and some moisture got into it and the screen cracked... As a student I can't afford the £178 repair just after Christmas so I looked around for a new cheaper phone. Was going to get the Motorola G but saw that there are still a few NEW N4's for £100! And since I've had the past 4 nexus devices it was a phone I just had to get. On 4.4.4 I literally can't tell the difference in performance and everything else in that matters is great! The screen is so-so - not because the resolution -> actually don't really notice anything bad at 720p and don't need 1080p. But as on most IPS screens you can see most of the pixels when in direct sunlight. Just a bit more here compared to the N5. But after a month - a REALLY great phone. For an unbelievable price. Even the camera isn't that bad )
Sorry, now back to my question - do you have a guide which you followed to sideload lollipop?? If so could you please link it? I'm a bit scared - I really can't afford to brick this phone at the moment. Thanks allot!

Hi all,
Picked up a 6P a couple of days ago and am stuck on the 1st Jan 2016 security patch and build MMB29P (phone isn't finding any new OTAs). I know this isn't very Nexus but I don't fancy flashing if I don't have to.
Is this a known thing and I just need to be a little more patient?
Cheers
Dan
Apologies, just realised this needs to go into the Q&A section. Could someone advise as to how to move?
Same problem here, I did sideload February OTA, and received March OTA by air.

Surely that can't be the case? How would they know where it was bought from? I bought a N9 from Argos and have never had problems with OTAs.
I called Google and asked why I'm not getting update, told the guy that I bought my phone through Amazon, he said that only phones purchased through Google store will be updated right away and I'll have to wait one to two months.
I bought mine from Amazon and I haven't received any updates. I'm still on the the January security patch also. If this is true it's pretty messed up of Google to do that. Shouldn't matter where you purchase the phone at.

This would be completely BS if it is true. The biggest reason I choose this phone over the S7 was for the OTAs.

Hey guys!
I was stuck on January as well as some of you and got tired of not receiving any update at all because I read that there are major improvements in MHC19I version.
However I managed to find site where are listed all OTAs and picked the one that was unable to find in my case MMB29P to MMB29Q. Then sideloaded it through default recovery (no hassle at all, took same time as casual OTA) and voilà new update available. Now I'm finally on MHC19I. To all who are worried about warranty and stuff, sideloading official update does NOT void your warranty. I may provide detailed instructions for updating, but it's described sufficiently all around the internet.
Explanation why I sideloaded: There's actually a bug causing your device to not see update server. I don't know if this can be fixed by any engineer in google, but it should be. However it can be fixed by sideloading any following update. :good:
Have fun! :victory:

Do anybody know when Verizon Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Nougat update and reason to delay?
I cannot make sense ever major provider(such as AT&T,Tmobile,Sprint) is updated but Not Verizon.
Thanks.
I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon didn't get the update until after the announcement/release of the S8.

Yep. It's really disappointing.
Why? Because f**k us, that's why!
Likely just an issue of them taking their sweet-assed time putting their bloatware applications into the firmware, and I'm sure they've been extra slow after the official 7.0 worldwide rollout started and was halted for a whole like 2-3 days after a couple of bugs surfaced.
I always get a new phone by the time Verizon gives me an update. I know someone that got nougat on his T-Mobile GS7 Edge and someone that got her GS7 update last night on Sprint.

I don't think it's related to Verizon bloat considering the turbo 2 is getting the update now. I'm really annoyed that one of the top selling, highest rated phones of the year is taking this long to update.

This! Get it together verizon, every other S7 is getting the update why aren't we? Kinda furstrating and makes me want to leave verizon or starting purchasing unlocked models so I can root them and get updates on a regular basis instead of waiting for Verizon to release an official.
Le Sigh
Verizon has always been one of the last (if not the last) to roll out updates.

That beta was unbearable. Constantly had issues with text messages on it for some reason. They would keep failing to send and I would miss messages from people as well. Very annoying.
Apparently only a security fix though it appears newer than the 1AQEB rolling out in Europe and other places. No apparent Bluetooth fix, though my very, very brief range test with the S3 Classic worked. I did not get disconnected until I was about 25-30 feet away. More testing is required of course. The patch seems light in size compared to the 1AQEB, with 1AQEJ coming in at approximately 270MB VS. 670MB for the 1AQEB. Only visible difference is that I am now on May 1st, 2017 security patch.
Interesting.

I received it as well this morning, I'm on Virgin Mobile
Not available on Rogers yet.
I have massive battery drain all of a sudden. Google Play Services are keeping the device awake all the time. Nothing changed since yesterday except the new update. Cleared the cache a few minutes ago. Have to see if there is any impact.
Got this OTA update on my Bell S8+ this morning. Since i got the update Im having issues on screen sensitivity, like Im texting then menu option pops up or just scrolling my chat messages and then out of the blue it's menu pop up. Using a tempered glass screen protector which has adhesive on edges, working perfect before the update. Will still monitor it and report back tomorrow.
My device got hosed after this update. I had to factory reset it. I am going to attempt a restore now from a backup but I have a feeling that I'm in for a nice new setup from scratch. The phone just went nuts this morning and progressively got worse. Play Services started draining battery like mad, Play Store stopped working, random glitches and crashes, etc. I finally decided that enough is enough. I wasted at least 2 hours troubleshooting the issues in the hope that factory reset won't be necessary. I ought to know better.
After 3 days using this update i guess it's time to do a hard reset. The glitches I'm experiencing are just annoying and there's a slight battery drain issue too.
After factory reset the device seems to be back to normal, more or less. Have to wait out the first 3-5 days for the device to settle in but all the glitches I was seeing are gone now.
Okay, got a chance to test the Bluetooth connection again. There seems to be a bit of improvement in range. This might be placebo effect. Beyond that, nothing has improved at all. I am still having trouble with Bluetooth dropping at random, connectivity and discovery issues, etc. Same as before. I don't believe that this update incorporated any of the Bluetooth fixes that were discussed for 1AQEB.
Got it today on Vidéotron, no issues so far.
I bought essential phone couple of months ago and was thoroughly disappointed because of several reasons, battery drain, call quality issues and very bland software too bare for my liking also it was well overpriced.
Now that price has dropped and have an opportunity for buying for far less. However I would like to ask current buyers if the same issues I mentioned above are still prevalent? Would you recommend buying this over other similar priced phones around £420
Thanks for your help

I bought mine during the black friday promotion (phone + free camera) for $157 including paid off lease and purchase option from Sprint. I also got a free 360 camera delivered last week. I sideloaded the Oreo beta 2 firmware from Essential website and I can tell you that it is much...much better than before. Try it yourself and find out!
If you're complaining about bland software then you should probably skip it.
It is still essentially stock Android.
(Which is why I bought it)
But everything else is working great for me. Cell reception is equal to my Op5, haven't had any complaints about call quality and battery life is incredible
This battery life is best of any Android I've had

I bought mine 3 weeks ago, went straight to Oreo beta, and update via OTA to beta 2. Even within those 3 weeks, huge improvements were made. I am absolutely happy with this phone, and I am coming from a Oneplus One (which was my favorite phone ever).

I've never encountered those problems, but I believe the Oreo beta fixed those that were Nougat problems. Also on T-Mobile, and it's signal is easily as good if not better than my Oneplus One.

The signal seemed just lower than few of my phone that I compared it with. In a good area there are no issues, in an area with not ideal reception, Essential gets even lower signal. I am thinking about Oreo Beta, but if Essential releases it within a week, then there is no point in getting the beta.
I am VERY happy with my phone.
Call quality has been pretty good on Oreo beta 2. Haven't had any dropped calls or other issues. Battery has improved on Oreo. I can easily go all day and get 5-6 hrs SoT. The software is pretty much the same stock Android experience. It's not for everyone but I usually go for phones with stock or near stock Android (Moto X Pure, Nexus 6, 5x, 6P, OP3T). I've really enjoyed the PH-1 but it still might not be the right phone for you.

Is it true that you would need to sideload the first beta and then do OTA to get the 2nd?

Interesting...good to know.
I have also read many threads where users report that factory reset fixed glitches which were a result of Oreo beta sideload. Do you know which issues could occur from Oreo beta?

I bought essential phone couple of months ago and was thoroughly disappointed because of several reasons, battery drain, call quality issues and very bland software too bare for my liking also it was well overpriced.
Now that price has dropped and have an opportunity for buying for far less. However I would like to ask current buyers if the same issues I mentioned above are still prevalent? Would you recommend buying this over other similar priced phones around £420
Thanks for your help

Most of us who chose this phone did so for the stock experience. (bland software) as you put it.
Being thoroughly disappointed and getting it again is like remarrying your ex lol.
I do not have any issues with call quality or battery drain and I paid about 150US. for a new sprint unlocked version.
Knowing this, paying 420 might still make it seem too expensive for you in the end.
Ebay and swappa here in the US are selling these things cheap not sure about the UK though.
With all the sprint phones out there the value on resale will be minimal.

I was just experiencing issues where I could not swipe my brightness slider and then trying to touch on the side of it would activate one if my quick settings, also my phone's visual voicemail wasn't working but everything was back to normal and haven't had any problems since I factory reset the phone

I just sideloaded Oreo 2 beta and when it finished, the phone booted properly. I started to play with it, but after about 10 min, phone rebooted and was in that reboot state(spinning dots) for about 5 min, then booted properly. There is no indication what has caused that, but for now the phone seems normal. I have Pebble app running and notification shade shows "Pebble is running in the background" and I am trying to remove that notification, but haven't found a way to do that just yet.
