Best way to fully backup everything (including SMS) - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't clean wiped my phone since taking delivery (March 2016) I'm rooted and have flashed every update up to N4F26J but I'v noticed a drop in battery even running the same kernel. I'd like to factory reset things then just restore apps and SMS. What is the best method to accomplish this? Previously I'd use SS Backup&Restore along with a Titanium Backup but that was a different device and different Andriod version, is there anything more efficient?
Thank you!

Thats what i do. Sms backup & restore by carbonite and titanium backup. Its pretty easy if you have the pro version of TB.

I use Titanium for user Apps and SMS...

g cloud is good if you dont know tit backup. tit backs up everything perfectly if you know how. for sms change your sms app in settings to titanium backup then go in titanium and back up (messages sms&mms) it'll be in yellow text. then you have to go back to your default sms app screen and change it back to hangouts, messenger or whatever you use. then in titanium backup find in settings create update.zip . as long as you dont wipe internal storage youll have your backups.
when restoring a backup change sms app default to [titanium backup] as your default messaging app. then go to in to tit backup and restore the generic looking yellow entry that says [Messages
(sms&mms)] what till its finished restoring. then just change the default messaging app back to hangouts or whatever you use.
you dont back up an sms app like messenger or hangouts because the sms are only read by those apps. their stored in (messages sms&mms) its a location in your phone.

Thats nuts. Ive seen where TB showed up as an sms app but never knew why. I'll definitely switch.

Backing Up Android Before Installing a New ROM

Greetings,
I am currently running sombionix's Stock 2.2 ROM. I am interested in exploring a couple different ROMs, but don't want to go through the work of reinstalling all my apps, settings, data, etc when I find one I like.
What's the best way to back all that stuff up, so I can reinstall it easily over a new ROM?
Do a Nandroid backup. Go into Rom Manager and select Backup Current ROM.
in CWR:
Make a Backup (this is a snapshot of your entire system)
Titanium Backup:
Backup all user apps + Data
I also backup Wifi Hotspots (passwords) and bookmarks
DO NOT BACKUP/RESTORE RED ITEMS
SMS Backup +
For all texts and MMS
LauncherPro / ADW:
Backup settings in their menus

Ti Backup can also backup texts/SMS messages. It's green and labeled either:
[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage 2.2
[SMS/MMS PREFS] Messaging
True, I just like that with SMS Backup+ they get stored in an SMS folder within gmail, that is searchable!
Unfortunately, on top of all that you probably need to backup (or download identical to yours) kernel version. Nandroid/cwm doesn't back it up, which can be a pain (which is you'll have to have a pc with odin).

Best software to use after rom change to get old data back?

I currently use Titatum Backup. What is the best way to get back all of your old software? What is the best way to get back email and txt messages from your phone before the upgrade? Is there away to backup and restore for all data on phone after ROM change. Big headaches seem to be txt messages and email messages and software. Contacts you can just restore via Google.
Thanks for any help you can give.
I use Ti for apps only. I back up my texts and mms with the stock messenger. Contacts and emial are automaticly restored when I sync my gmail profiles. (I only use gmail email addresses and use the gmail app from the market).
I ran into an issue when I went from my previous rom to synergy rc2 and did a full restore of apps and user data using Ti. Long story short, Ti over-wrote some system files and borked my mms.
I have heard some speak of using appbrain, but I have not used it, so I can not comment on it.

Well if you didn't backup with Titanium, or make a Nandroid backup, there is no way to get that data back.

Texts can be backed up with SMS Backup and Restore. Emails should be on the email server to begin with. Apps can be backed up and restored with Titanium
The guys on the Mik forums recommend Titanium Backup (paid version) for apps and data and MyBackup Root (free on the market) for SMS and MMS messages. I also use it for my alarms and dictionary and neither have let me down yet.
I saved a copy of everything that was on my phone before I changed from stock rom to cm7...how would I then get my messages back to my phone?
I use my backup pro

How did you save everything?

What do you do before changing roms to ease the migration

Well here's what I do...
Go through my individual apps and if there's a "backup" setting I create those (including SMS backup).
Run titanium backup of all apps.
Take screen shots of my home screens (to remember icon/ widget placement).
Any other ideas to help ease the migration?
You can get a custom launcher and save all your settings and placements...I use nova launcher

I use nova as well. Still has the stock feel with all the customizations and the backup and restore feature is very nice, especially if you're a flashaholic.

Titanium to backup all my apps
SMS backup & restore for my sms
Nova launcher to backup home setup+ widgets
titanium backup for apps
mybackup pro (you'll need to crack it if you want to do restores between CM and MIUI) - because it does MMS unlikes SMS restore & backup.
and a recovery backup ..
I use My Backup Pro to backup app+data, homescreen with shortcuts/widgets, settings, call logs, SMS, contacts (Though I prefer to sync with google contacts),
Can't believe nobody listed nandroid 1st. My apps are backed up by schedule, don't need to do that. 1st I back up SMS, then use a wipe-all script in recovery to speed things up. After flashing on reboot, I have a TB .apk on the SD ready so I can pop that on quick without hitting the play store. I created a label of all the apps I want to restore so I don't waste time choosing apps one by one, and then BAM...! One button restore. Restore SMS, reboot, profit!
Since I change ROMs often as I change shirts , all I do is nandroid if it's a real good ROM; other than that I start from scratch and install apps as I need them.
if i press advanced restore and restore /data. its same as TPB ? he restore on data or apk + data ? thanks
Ok, wait woah. I feel stupid. Now, I've been flashing roms since back when Oxygen GB was all the rage, but I never realized I could use Titanium Backup&Restore, to backup and restore all of my apps! Derp. So how do I go about restoring them?
I use this method from the AOKP FAQ:
5. Best way to restore apps with Titanium Back up?
Open TiBu.
Menu/ Preferences/ App processing mode/ AUTO Direct
Create backup (Menu/ Batch/ backup/ Click the gray Run button: Backup all user apps) Do not backup or restore system data
Choose Pause active apps/ Run the batch operation
Back/ Menu/ More/ Create "update.zip."
Under "Titanium backup will be install as: "choose “System application”
Move update.zip to root of the sdcard
Flash the ROM, GApps and BEFORE rebooting,mount /system
Choose install zip, and select the zip you created
Reboot
Skip the initial device setup screen Tap top-left, top-right, bottom-right, and bottom-left corners in that order
Launch TiBu and do Menu/ Batch/ Restore all user apps plus data
Reboot
Settings/ Accounts and Sync/ Add your Google account

Using this method I usually just restore essential apps and other apps only when I'm sure I'm going to be staying on the new ROM for awhile.

google backup and restore is fair enough lol
Titanium Backup and SMS Backup + .
And just for save backup all my new photos/videos/wallpapers to PC. That should be enough.
Came across Go Backup and it can backup everything like SMS , MMS , contacts, call logs, stock launcher settings and Apps with data as well.
Importantly, you can restore all at once without clicking on install button for every app

Nor really. Since the phone as memory enough to save all SMS. Beside that sometimes for me already helped to find some SMS with the date that someone told me something and with that I just search for it and turn my point right.

[SOLVED] How to restore SMS in Android 4.4 / Hangouts

Edit: SMS Backup and Restore was updated to support 4.4, an even restoring from backups that were created before updating works fine.
Original post said:
Does anyone know a method or an app that is able to restore SMS in Android 4.4 KitKat? I'm running this N5 port, which works great, but I cannot find a single app that is updated to support restore on Android 4.4. With SMS Backup & Restore I am able to restore into the 4.3 stock messaging app that I pushed via adb, but all messages are empty afterwards. And they are not shown at all in Hangouts.
I know that Google said SMS backup apps need to be updated in order to support KitKat (read 3rd section on this blogpost), but I can't believe there is no single updated app or other method yet.
Any advices, guys?
Edit: Here's the relevant section of the Android Developer Blog post:
Advice for SMS backup & restore apps
Because the ability to write to the SMS Provider is restricted to the app the user selects as the default SMS app, any existing app designed purely to backup and restore SMS messages will currently be unable to restore SMS messages on Android 4.4. An app that backs up and restores SMS messages must also be set as the default SMS app so that it can write messages in the SMS Provider. However, if the app does not also send and receive SMS messages, then it should not remain set as the default SMS app. So, you can provide a functional user experience with the following design when the user opens your app to initiate a one-time restore operation:
1. Query the current default SMS app's package name and save it.
Code:
String defaultSmsApp = Telephony.Sms.getDefaultSmsPackage(context);
2. Request the user change the default SMS app to your app in order to restore SMS messages (you must be the default SMS app in order to write to the SMS Provider).
Code:
Intent intent = new Intent(context, Sms.Intents.ACTION_CHANGE_DEFAULT);
intent.putExtra(Sms.Intents.EXTRA_PACKAGE_NAME, context.getPackageName());
startActivity(intent);
3. When you finish restoring all SMS messages, request the user to change the default SMS app back to the previously selected app (saved during step 1).
Code:
Intent intent = new Intent(context, Sms.Intents.ACTION_CHANGE_DEFAULT);
intent.putExtra(Sms.Intents.EXTRA_PACKAGE_NAME, defaultSmsApp);
startActivity(intent);

It has set my hangouts back as default SMS app but still nothing there.

I had the same issue on my Nexus 5 with stock Kitkat 4.4 , so this may help.
- SMS Back and Restore made copy of texts on my Nexus 4
- copied backup to my Nexus 5
- restored messages, setting SMS Backa and Restore and def. SMS app when prompted, and then set Hangouts as def. app after
No text messages in Hangouts. Rebooted phone, still not text messages in Hangouts. I performed a test backup with SMS Backup and Restore, and it showed a bunch of messages being backed up, so it seems the messages WERE restored but just not showing.
I then went in Settings > Apps > All
Selected Hangouts, and cleared Cache and then Cleared all Data
I loaded Hangouts and all of a sudden, all my text messages were there.
Hope this helps, if so, don't be shy to hit that Thanks button below

Has anyone got things working usings SMS Backup+? I used to use B&R but switched to SMS Backup+ b/c I liked the gmail search-ability. SMS Backup+ goes through the restore process and states it restored 500 messages (current restore setting) but nothing shows up. I'm guessing this has to do with the KitKat and the whole "primary SMS app" thing?

Backup apps and data

Hi,
I need to backup my apps and data,contacts and messages. I used to backup with GO Backup, and it worked flawlessly up to android 4.4, but now on LP and M I can not use it anymore. It was very simple and as soon as I restored my backups everything was back to normal (I didn't even need to login or register again in apps like instagram or whatsapp...). Now I use Titanium, but after restoring backups, I should login to every app, which is troublesome and it can not backup contacts and messages.
I was wondering what app you use with LP or M for backups, and if it is as simple and effective as GO Backup ?
