Battery Percentage Issue when charging - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

I have been having this issue since I bought the phone but never bothered to do anything about it since at first it didn't annoy me that much. The issue is that whenever I set the phone to charge even though it says "Quick charging" on the lock screen it charges extremely slowly but once I reboot the phone it is all of a sudden quickcharged.
For example:
I set the phone to charge at 25%.
30 minutes later it shows its only charged to 35%.
I reboot the phone and now it shows 80%(which is the correct percentage).
This happens no matter what, even if I factory reset, restore from ZTE's provided images, or flash a different ROM. I know its not an issue with the charger and cable since the same thing happens with other quickchargers. At this point I'm pretty sure its a battery issue since it happens no matter what but before I RMA it I want to see if there's anything I overlooked. Are there any other possible reasons why this is happening and if so, how do I fix it?

Hardware defect. Get ahold of ZTE. I had to do an RMA issue for the exact same issue.

Such a shame. This was my only issue with the phone and now I have to wait 10 days to get a new one

[Q] Help with DVP - won't turn on

Hello. I created this account so I can finally ask some of my questions regarding this phone. I've had it since the January 6th shipping, and it's really been fine for the most part. I've the 8 gig version.
Anyway - within the last few weeks my phone has been refusing to charge on random occasions (it's really very random as to when it will charge and when it won't) - both plugged into the wall outlet via the USB power converter that came with my phone and plugged into my computer.
It's been pretty annoying, but nothing I couldn't work around. It would charge eventually.
However, last night I plugged it in to the outlet and it made the noise confirming it was plugged and started charging. This morning, I unplug it and it's non-responsive. It doesn't respond to anything. I have tried:
-turning it on with the power button; holding it down for an extended period and releasing
-taking out the battery
-plugging it in to my computer (which didn't recognize anything being plugged in)
-plugging it in to a different outlet with a different cable (phone came with two)
I've let it sit plugged in for three hours now and retried all of these things and still nothing... it's dead!
I'm not sure where to go from here? I guess I should have my husband call Dell.
Has anyone had any trouble with the sporadic charging?
Are there any solutions I've missed to get my phone to turn on?
You say you've let it sit for a while, was that plugged into a power source? Try that, it sounds like your battery has gone completely flat and probably needs to sit on a power source. Failing that definitely call Dell and get a replacement battery and charger and see if that fixes it, sounds like one of those items is your problem.

Yes, it has been (and still is) plugged in that whole time. I edited my post
Yeah, something is wonky, I just cannot pinpoint it. My husband's will sometimes not charge, too. But, much less often than mine does.
charging issues
In the last 2 days my VP freezes while charging overnight. Restarts when I take out and replace battery. It will also freeze when I try to use any app while charging. I tried to use Dell chat to resolve issue but got bounced around. I even had an agent tell me my service tag wasnt valid. I'll try to call 800# when I have a free hour or so (I'm sure the call will take that long). The first two levels of support at Dell seem to have no clue regarding the VP it's very frustrating. P.S. what happens with all the apps I've purchased if they need to replace my phone?

Have you swapped batteries with your other DVP? Maybe replacement is the only option, hit up @dellcares on twitter, they have helped me in the past and bypass the whole waiting on hold nonsense with dell mobility.
@tbvnz: all your purchased appls will be reinstalled automatically if you installed them via the Zune software on your pc. The ones installed via the phone can be reinstalled from the MP on the phone, just hit the Buy button again and it will tell you its already been purchased and allow you to download it again.
Update:
I snagged my husband's battery and put it in my phone. My phone immediately came on and is now functioning. My computer recognizes it as being plugged in and it's charging.
And, my battery in my husband's phone works fine. It is fully charged and his phone is having no issues.
Certainly this is annoying (and did in fact happen to my husband a few weeks ago where his phone wouldn't respond until MY battery was put in his phone, but we chocked that up to the battery being dead {which it was}.) but at least my husband and I both have DVPs and can interchange batteries... I wonder what someone who didn't have that option would do.
Certainly confusing that removing and replacing my existing battery wouldn't turn the phone on, but my husband's would - even though both batteries are at full charge.
Thanks for the help! I'm not sure if I should contact Dell about it or not. Clearly it's subpar performance, but I've not been completely impressed by this phone in the nearly two months that we've had them, anyway.
Good to hear you are up and running. You could keep an eye on the situation and contact Dell for a replacement battery if it occurs again.

My brother and I have experienced the same behavior on both of our phones. Most recent was his this past week, exactly as you described. It would not turn on via the power button, so I swapped his battery with mine and his booted right up. When I tried his battery in my phone it showed a full charge. That has happened to me one or two times, randomly.

I've seen that behavior in my DVP (picked it up two weekends ago) and I can tell you how to work around it.
What seems to be happening is some kind of bug when you have it connected and charging and try to turn on/off the phone. If you notice, when it seems unresponsive, the hardware keyboard will probably still light up. This is because it's actually on but the screen just doesn't get any output/input.
What I did was this:
1. Disconnect your phone from the charger.
2. Slide the hardware keyboard down so you can see whether it is lit up (on) or not.
3. Hold down the power button until the exact moment you see the keyboard go dark (off). You have to be quick because it will try to turn right back on a few milliseconds later if you still have the power button depressed, leaving it still non-responsive.
4. Wait a few seconds, and press the power button as normal to turn it on. This time you should see the Dell logo, etc. and everything will be fine.
I've gotten into the habit of either leaving it on or turning it off before I connect it to my charger (it's my alarm clock so it's on almost all the time).

my DVP won't turn on either...
Hi - i'm glad i found this post because i've had my DVP for 3 days now and its frozen about 5 times and this morning wouldn't turn on or seem to take a charge. it was fully charged when i put it down last night and this morning there was nothing.
i've stuck it into a wall outlet for now and i guess i'll just wait for it. don't know what else to do. don't know anyone else around with the same phone, so that battery swap isn't an option. pretty funny that you realized to do that and that it worked.
anyway, i feel better now that i've complained about it. thanks.
Did you try pulling the battery and then booting it up? If that doesn't work, after a pull just leave the battery in the phone and let it charge. After 20 minutes you should see it power on.
So it's continued to happen with my phone whenever I have it plugged in to the wall with the brick that came with the phone. Annoying! Basically I cannot have it plugged in next to my bed; it can only charge on my computer. So much for using it as an alarm!
I will try the power down and reboot with the keyboard out. I know what you speak of with the flashing keyboard. I hadn't tried to see if mine is flashing while the phone is 'dead'.

Charging intermittently stops and resumes rapidly

My 6P on 6.0.1 stock with the march update has had occasional times where it will intermittently charge, then stop, then charge endlessly, changing back and forth about once a second or more often. There's been times I've woken up, like today overnight when I noticed it barely inched up a percent or two on the Google USB-C cable connected to my laptop.
To isolate this from being a defective cable issue, this has also happened with the Google charger that came with the phone. I would see the screen turn on in fact, like when you first plug the phone with the screen off, to indicate charging has begun. That would occur every few seconds.
I'm a little concerned. The time it happened with the charger, a reboot seemed to have calmed it down. But today no matter the restart, the charging just keeps cycling nonstop.
Anyone else had this? Would it be wise to file a problem with the Google forums and contact support?

Dang, good to know I'm not alone!
I've also experienced higher battery drain (twice more I'd say) than normal recently. Even overnight when I used to see hourly drain rates of 0.5%, now I see 1.5% and higher. Getting worried the charging issue may be damaging the battery. But it could also be the patch or a rogue app.

Well either the cords bad, the brick is bad, or the receptacle. Or the charging port on the phone, the battery or power control module in the phone. Or if theirs a thick case on your phone.
Sounds like it starts to charge then stops. But I'm no electrician. Oh wait, yes I am.
It starts to charge, then stops as though the cable was disconnected, then resumes within half a second, then disconnects, and so on and so forth non stop.
Case might be a reason. It's a rubber and plastic transparent Spigen one. I'll try removing it when it happens again next time.
But at this rate, sounds like 3 people are having the same issue, and if it's a hardware one, then damn....
This isn't the charger... There is something buggy with the update. I woke up a few days ago after the march update with an almost dead phone, and the charging icon flashing over the battery, as if the phone new it was plugged in but refused to charge. I unplugged and plugged it back in with the same result. I restarted and tried again, same result. I was only able to get it to charge my plugging it into my girlfriend's nexus 5x charger, which instantly started charging my phone. I went back to my charger and all of the sudden no issue and the phone was charging fine. There is definitely something up with this update.
Well then, that makes 4 people now.
What's a good way to report this?
I'm not seeing the same exact issue as you guys, but I AM having charging issues after updating to MHC19I. I can still charge my phone from the stock charger and my other USB-C chargers, but now none of them allow my phone to charge rapidly. Do you guys who can get your devices to charge from a rapid charge compatible charger see the "Charging Rapidly" message on the lock screen? Ever since this recent update, I've noticed that my device isn't (and is taking over 2 hours to charge fully from ~20%).
I have this problem too. It's fixed by a reboot so I'm assuming it's not a hardware problem. It only happens once a week or so.
The first time it happened I didn't notice the charging/not charging and only realised something weird had happened because my phone was off & showing fully charged. My phone is never switched off.
I figured it out the next time when I noticed the screen was still on during the night. Switching from charging to not charging was keeping the screen on.
So glad it's not just me.

I normally see it say that on the USB C charger. That being said, you seem to have an intermediate speed going on, as opposed to super slow normal USB cable speeds and the USB-C fast charger. In my experience most 1-1.5V low amp ports like my Mac's, or the car's USB port will charge at a rate of about 1% per 3-5 minutes. So a full charge would take 8-9 hours from 0%. From the USB-C wall charger it would be about 1%/m so an hour and forty is enough to get it back to full.
Based on that your charger seems to be somewhere in the middle.
But yes it isn't normal. If you are using Google's native hardware, you should see the same charging speed as I am.
I'm just terribly worried this cycling is destroying my battery. I have definitely not gotten the same battery life the last few weeks.

My phone just randomly die. It will work for like 2 hours. Almost like the battery would been disconnected.
When the phone shutdowns it says the battery is low and try to charge. The Battery icon with a flash is showing, but just for 5-7 seconds, then it shutdown again and it's looping again and again and again.... To get out of the loop i'm booting in to fast boot, then push at start. and it is almost 50/50 if it is working. It can be booting up and you see the red/yellow/green/blue yada yada boot-up sequence then in 5-7 seconds in to the sequence it would shutdown again immediately.
I tried several factory-resets. re-flashed to stock. Nothing helps.

Just starting having this issue. It constantly says charging then a second later shows no charging and the process keeps repeating itself. I did a reset and the issue seems to be resolved for now. Really hope this isn't a constant issue. Definitely appears to be software related though.

I hadn't had it for a while then recently it happened again once. I still don't know what triggers it for sure.
The battery drain is also rather random. There are days I can expect the unit to idle and drain at or below 2%/h, but lately it just goes through it way faster, twice that. I am unsure why and how that happens so randomly. Seems the Google Play Services and Google Apps are using up some %s. Not much else I can identify.
I've had this issue since a few days ago, restarted the phone and it's come right for now.
Haven't experienced this in weeks now.

Any updates on this? My Nexus 6P started showing the same symptoms (either won't charge at all, or charging cycles on and off rapidly (< 1 second) and only sometimes charges). The issue appeared out of the blue 4-5 days ago, just before the 1 year anniversary of receiving the phone. I tried different cables and adapters, still no change. Last night at 11pm it was at 50% when I set it to charge and it seemed to charge. This morning at 6:30 am it had only charged up to 83% and was charging on and off. Worried about how to reliably use the phone if it won't charge, and also how this might affect the battery / other circuitry.
Any help/tips appreciated!
Edit: The phone hasn't been dropped or had any other issue that may affect the hardware. Also, no OS update or anything recently (AFAIK - it did not ask me to install anything, not sure if there were any silent updates). It is currently on Android 7.0 Nougat (baseband version angler-03.72, build NBD90X, security patch level Oct 5, 2016).
Have not had this in a long time. It sort of stopped on its own. :S

I bought the Xperia X compact thinking that it is going to be a decent phone, i received the phone only last week and it had experienced a 'catastrophic' issue. The phone started overheating at random times, during phone calls, browsing and taking photos; i know that the phone cpu is working and it will cause a slight heating but the heat from the phone was too hot that i can't touch it anymore with bare hands. During the overheating the phone then resets itself and starts bootlooping continuously non stop until it runs out of battery. So plugging in the charger after the battery is completely flat (it hasn't turned on or off for several hours), the phone heats up again to a point where you cannot touch it again while the red LED turns on and off and then the phone starts to loop again. The starting boot screen is also messed up as well, i have no idea what to do with it except returning it.
The phone is stock untouched and has not been dropped, my concern now is if i get a replacement will there be a chance that it will do the same heating issue again. I know at the moment the full sized X is having an overheating issue as well when the camera is turned on, could this be related.
Any suggestions on what i can do or has anyone experienced this issue

Never had an issue or heard of one at all with the X Compact thus far. In fact most people comment on how it doesn't get as hot as the Z5 Compact due to the different chip. I have used mine to watch full length films at times and haven't noticed any heat issues at all. While I don't use my camera often I have used it to record small videos in the 5 to 10 minute range and didn't notice any change with temperature in the phone. Sounds like you got a dud and if it's getting that hot it could be a defective battery. I would just return it for another one.

never heard of it either, this phone runs VERY cool (25-37 degrees Celsius max) depending on load and surroundings ofc. i never noticed any real temp differences in my hand while browsing, watching video, using the cam or making calls either. never rebooted itself no matter how much I pushed it either.
sure sounds like a faulty battery, those can be quite dangerous if you cant even touch it I would turn it off, put it in the sink overnight and return the phone asap.
edit: I can see from the pic it even affects the screen, as I have never seen it reported before seems like one of those 1 in a billion battery you sometimes hear about in any electronic device today that uses lithium batteries from ecigs to laptops. again be careful when a battery acts like that, don't provoke it anymore, get a replacement and I am sure you wont have any trouble.

The support team of the store has one of those basic checklist over the phone/emails (turn off/on, factory reset, remove google acc) and then once the checklist does not resolve the issue it gets escalated then i can send it back.
The problem was that they were insistent that it can be solved by factory reset, i had to keep reinstating that the phone just shows the logo for not even 1 seconds and it turns off again; I can't even get to recovery or bootloader menu. On top of that I cannot charge it at all either; when the charger is plugged in the phone tries to display the battery percent charge but it just shows green lines like the picture and then turns off again. Very frustrating. In the end they accepted the return and quoted 3-4 weeks before they can confirm if anything is wrong with it. Its very disappointing and just unlucky of me if this issue is 1 in a million.

yeah I gotta say you are unlucky man
the phone is quite cool for a 28nm processor device, I only had one time overheating restart after playing telltale batman game for about 30 minutes and that game is a seriously heavy game so that was something normal...
I have a few of these from various regions and they all run perfectly, I would send it in for sure or exchange it
If you're in Europe you have two weeks to return it for receiving your money back (web / purchase on distance) . I would send it back for them for refund or a working XC. This is not your problem, but theirs. Return it today. After two weeks they get the chance to repair and leave you without phone.

Oh how annoying and unlucky No factory reset or anything can fix that problem. Sorry for being a little late but have you tried going to a Sony store? I dunno but they *should* be rather interested in resolving your problem directly as a bad battery is rather serious.
Also if you live in Europe the above is true, they are obligated to give you a refund or new phone within 14 days.
It's not supposed to be hot in any way. I tried stress testing the processor and rapid charging mine and the battery sensor reading never got over 36C which can barely be felt. Also it never throttled back or affected stability.
@Kianush, I seriously doubt that overheating caused the restart after playing a telltale game. It's more likely a coincidence of things/bug in the game. Also its clear that it is the battery that is at fault here, it's impossible for the sd650 to get so hot that you can not touch the phone and burns the board and/or screen.
The store finally got back to me, parts of the motherboard had burnt up from possible overvoltage of the battery. I am trying to get the refund for the device at the moment. Just unlucky i guess.

Interesting Boot-Up Issue - Please Help!!! I Don't Know What Else To Try!!!

Everyone, please help me. I don't know what else to do. I am desperate here!!!
So, I've had my Galaxy Note 4 since the day they came out (October 24th, 2014), and I baby my phone.
Anyway, I've never dropped it, got it wet - nothing.
Last week, out of nowhere (I don't recall downloading anything out of the ordinary), my phone started getting extremely sluggish. I wiped the cache partition, but that didn't solve my issues.
Then, the phone was shutting down (abruptly, not powering down) out of nowhere. So, I pulled the battery, and did so many other recommended things.
Now, I cannot turn on my phone without first pulling the battery. Every so often, the phone shuts down (abruptly) and I have to pull the battery to start it up again.
I've changed batteries to back to my original battery, but that didn't help.
Then, every so often a screen comes on with the Android character saying, "Downloading. Do Not Turn Off Target !!"
Please help me!!! What can I do? What should I do?
I love this phone and it's gonna be a long time before the Galaxy Note 8 comes out!

Last week, out of nowhere (I don't recall downloading anything out of the ordinary), my phone started getting extremely sluggish. I wiped the cache partition, but that didn't solve my issues.
Then, the phone was shutting down (abruptly, not powering down) out of nowhere. So, I pulled the battery, and did so many other recommended things.
Now, I cannot turn on my phone without first pulling the battery. Every so often, the phone shuts down (abruptly) and I have to pull the battery to start it up again.
I've changed batteries to back to my original battery, but that didn't help.
Then, every so often a screen comes on with the Android character saying, "Downloading. Do Not Turn Off Target !!"
Please help me!!! What can I do? What should I do?
I love this phone and it's gonna be a long time before the Galaxy Note 8 comes out!

Could be a faulty battery because the symptoms sounds similar to mine.
What happened to me was :
Phone would shut down randomly and would only switch on when plugged and charging.
Phone would shut down randomly and would only switch on after pulling out the battery.
Phone would randomly reboot.
Phone would discharge at a very quick pace. 20% for 5-20 minutes of usage.
Phone would only switch on when plugged into a power source but would bootloop when unplugged, even at 100%.
I managed to remedy the situation by buying a new battery. Although you did mentioned that you replaced it with the original battery, I suspect that there might be some sort of batch issue or something when it comes to the Note 4 battery. This current battery that I'm using is the third battery I bought for my Note 4 (because Samsung did not honour their warranty) and the only one that did not came from a Samsung authorised dealer and so far the issues seems to be gone. My phone stopped shutting down randomly and now I'm able to get 4 hour SOT with 12 hours of battery. Not that I'm suggesting you to get a fake battery but it's worth a try to see that it's not a motherboard issue.
My first two battery that came from Samsung and an authorised dealer both had issues within one year respectively and if you bring it to Samsung they will claim it's a motherboard issue and will charge you a few hundreds for a replacement so a new battery is worth a try.
So, I replaced my OEM battery with an Anker battery over a year ago. When this issue started, I put the OEM battery back in. The same issues occurred and the battery drained faster, so I put the Anker one back in.
Did adding a new battery fix your issues? It seems like you might have had the same issues as me.
Did that boot screen with the big Android guy come up on your phone as well?
Did you do a factory reset upon loading the new battery in?
I really love this phone, as you do, and I really want it to work and last!

Hi there,
I had exact the same problems. I think it is your flashmemory that is causing the problem. When the phone suddenly reboots into downloadmode you normally will see an error message in red saying "emmc read failure". This is your flashmemory. I ordered a new motherboard via alieexpress and replaced it myself, which is not difficult. You can find tutorial on youtube.
My phone is working perfect now.

Same issue here, started over a week ago, I have tried so many things, no results, you can't do anything, just gotta change the motherboard.
Same issues for me also. I replaced the battery,with no positive effect. The only thing to help is installing the app wake lock. Phone now works, but this does not solve the poor ram handling.

Nexus 6p Turning off and won't turn on until plugged in

I recently had my nexus 6p battery replaced. I was told it was replaced with the Huawei brand battery. The capacity seems to be normal again. However, I have noticed that my phone is randomly shutting off about once a week. It will go from using it to just completely blank screen and off. The battery will be at any charge percentage, but when I try to turn on the screen or turn on the phone, it just stays blank. It only works if I plug the phone in, wait for the charging indicator, then I can unplug it and turn on the phone..
I have noticed this has happened when I opened my camera app and when I opened snapchat. I think this is a coincidence, but I am unsure.
I noticed when I plugged the phone in when it had turned off, I noticed a very feint red flash of light below the ear piece. This is supposed to be where the light sensor and proximity sensor are at.
I had it happen again to me when I was opening Android Messages when I was with one of the repair guys that replaced the battery. I used a USB A to C cable to plug it into a computer and then into my phone to show him that plugging it in jump starts it and the battery is not dead. However, this resulted in a bootup, then blank screen. Leaving it plugged in has it bootup and then blank screen and back to off animated charging. Thinking phone was dead dead, I went home and tried to call warranty. In the process, I plugged it into my computer, USB C to USB C and the phone turned on and booted up. My computer has a thunderbolt 3 port. My guess is the power supplied by the USB 2.0 type A port was too low to give it the jumpstart. But when I plug it into the chargers I have at home, which are more powerful, it is enough to jump start it and get it working again. Maybe it is a coincidence about the different charger outputs.
Any thoughts?

Only cheap battery's available for the 6p unless you get a ceno. I purchased a battery from eBay supposed "OEM." The first one did exactly what you first mentioned. Early shut downs and failure to turn on. I didn't even get those with the original battery just that it was getting bit tired. I messaged the seller and he gladly sent me another no questions asked. I've had that battery for 3 months now no battery sensor but works great. I wouldn't hesitate to order another knock off but will make sure it works this time before I put the back cover back on!!! So in other words there's nothing wrong with your phone just that your battery is a lemon. The fact that it's the original battery your having problems with is even worse. If you like the phone spend the $100 and get a shop to replace the battery.

I had the same issue, I tought the new battery was defective or false but it was because android 8.1 developer preview 1. I went back to android 8.0 and the issue dissapeared.

This is great to know, thank you. I'm having exactly the same problem as OP. I replaced the battery myself, I have no doubt that the battery is a cheap knock-off version even though it's got the Huawei branding and regulatory info on it.

I got the battery replaced and everything is great. Great battery life and no more restarting and locking up. Definitely was a battery issue.

Don't buy cheap knock off batteries. Remeber the original battery has a pretty fat ribbon cabble and also has the temperature controller built in the battery here's a pic

I have the same issue as everyone else posting here, except my battery is the original. The battery performance follows normal usage patterns. This means when I charge it, it eventually reaches 100%. When I'm normally using the phone on battery, it slowly discharges. Any phone acts like this.
My problems started when Oreo 8.1 was first installed. Other than being on the beta channel, this phone is not altered, or rooted.
Within fifteen minutes of using the phone heavily while on battery, the phone decides to shut down. The bars at the top and bottom of the screen turn bright red, the screen is greyed out, and it says "Shutting Down" in the middle of the screen. I have not traced this to any particular activity of mine. Usually just reading news or mail. When the phone shuts down, restarting will not work. It gets to the "android" screen, and shuts off again..
When I plug it into the charger The lightning bolt battery shape appears on the screen. Then the filling battery is shown, and it starts filling from very low. The second cycle of the filling battery starts filling from where I expect it to be: in the 80-95% range the phone was at when it crashed. At that point I can restart the phone, while plugged into the charger or not. The battery level indication after the phone is back is exactly what the battery was charged to when the phone crashed: usually 80-95%. I do not think it is a battery problem. I think the battery monitoring software is being interfered with.
Usually I can listen to an audio book with the screen off for a long period of time without triggering the crash. This does not require any network activity. Maybe that's a clue. Also, I have never crashed the phone while it is plugged into the charger. Maybe when the phone is in charging mode, the low battery monitor is not active, so it can't shut down the phone.
I have started putting adb into tcpip mode, and I've captured a few system logs of the phone as it crashed. There is no obvious crash at the end, but there are always a series of strange events, such as permission denials, and processes being killed. I think there may be an out-of-memory condition occurring. There is so much noise in the form of security violations being inserted into the log that it is difficult to determine which error is leading to the crash.
Perhaps I should try going back to Oreo 8.0.

I bought mine on eBay awhile back but don't know if anyone sells the original batteries anymore. You can try though
