Nexus 4 running hot

In System Tuner, I've been noticing my CPU temps are quite a bit higher then usual (around 50 C when they used to be around 45 C). The only thing I've done is I recently did a factory reset after installing some apps. I don't quite get why the temps are a bit higher then they used to be. The phone is noticeably warmer during very light use -- is there anything I can do to try to fix this or is this pretty normal?

My phones idle temps are around 20-28 degrees Celsius. If i'm gaming like Modern Combat 4 then the temps might hit like 38 after 15-30 mins. I really think your temps are way to high for light use. So this only happened after doing a factory reset? Maybe look for apps that might be running in the background from a task manager. If that doesnt work just try a factory reset. Are you all stock?

Just so you know CPU tuner shows you the CPU temp ... That is different to battery temp
For example right now my battery temp is 25 degrees but my CPU temp is 31

Aw yup my bad, I was trying to find a app to display CPU temp but couldnt find one so I just used one that displayed battery, did think they were gonna be that different.
Also, TrevSo are those idle CPU temps? Or under only light usage? My idle is around 31 now that I just checked but when playing a game I do hit up to 51 degrees Celsius.

I just ran stabilitytest and my CPU temp hit 70 degress Celsius after 5 mins and thottled down to 1GHz then it went back to 1.5GHZ, and the CPU temperature fell to 65 degrees Celsius, and the process kept repeating till I stopped it. Also, my battery temp did no get higher than 40 degress Celsius. Are these normal temps? Or should I be worried?

You need to undervolt. Undervolting took care of all my heat issues.

Use a custom kernel like faux . he has his own implementation for thermal stuff . and since using it my phone has never throttled or even got above 34 in battery temp
I also run a -125 under volt

Ya I probably will but my main question is if my temps at stock volt seem alright.

50C is not hot. it falls right in the middle of a normal cpu temp while being used. 80C is hot.

What about the CPU hitting 70 in a benchmark? Thats when mine starts to throttle.

Throttling during benchmarks has been a problem since day 1 with this phone.

ive hit 100C
you can disable thermal throttle(for benchmarking) in a terminal emulator..
su(press enter)
echo N > /sys/module/msm_thermal/parameters/enabled(press enter)
if you reboot, youll have to enter it again.

I feel bad for your battery.

What would be average CPU and battery temps while playing a 3D game like Modern Combat 4 for 30 mins? What about under light usage? Also, at what is the max a temperature a battery can go without getting damaged?

Nexus 7 overheating when playing 3d games

Am I the only one having this issue? I'm not really much of a gamer, but I noticed playing zen bound 2 that it started to get really hot and Trinity kernel toolbox have me a temp alert. Eventually the thing just either reboots or freezes playing any game with decent graphics. Normally I have my nexus at 1.7 w/on demand governor but it still does the same thing at 1.2 GHz. I tried the omega kernel to see if that was an issue but still had the same result. I'm pretty sure this didn't happen until I updated to 4.2.2 but maybe I just didn't notice because as I said, I'm not much of a gamer.
Any suggestions? Am I the only one? It stays at normal temperatures otherwise.

Well think about it, it's not like the N7 has fans inside it pumping air. It's only a tablet. Extensive or graphic heavy gaming on any tablet will cause it to overheat.
Mine once overheated so much playing NFS that the glass actually separated from the bezel a little bit. The adhesive holding it down pretty much melted. I had to reheat it, clamp it down, and kinda melt it back into place.

No that's not normal. I've played games such as dead trigger, NFS most wanted, shadow gun deadzone, for literally up to 3 hours straight and don't have overheating issues. Sure the tablet warms up a little bit, but has never actually gotten hot to the touch.
I use stock kernel, but I've also used faux, omega 3 and Trinity. Didn't overheat on any of them. I also don't overclock as it's never made a difference I could see on any game.

Hmm I don't know why I'm having problems when you guys aren't then. I've tried it several times on 1.2 ghz (trinity and omega) but it still does it. It heats up the quickest playing zen bound it seems. What's the stock gpu clock? I just realized the GPU was set to 446 instead of 416 though, maybe that's the issue... Perhaps I'll try the faux kernel if it does it again. But basically after about 10-20 mins of zen bound it gets up to like 88 degrees or something (maybe hotter, I can't see the temp in game) and then freezes and shuts down.
Update: froze at stock gpu and cpu frequencies... Trying faux and then possibly another kernel. BTW this is with no case or anything.

No it isn't really normal. It usually may heat up a bit above room temperature. How hot would you say it is? I am a big gamer so I play games quite a lot on my nexus 7. I have updated to 4.2.2 as well but it doesn't heat up that much. I haven't really played massive games since I updated though. If it is burning hot it isn't right and could be a fault. Hope I helped.

It gets to 88 degrees, maybe more, and then freezes and/or shuts down.

Does it heat up if you run a benchmark?
If it's only Zen Bound than you know where the problem is but I would be surprised if that is where the problem is.
My advice would be to flash leankernel while you try to figure out the problem. Run it at defaults. Don't even open a cpu tweak program.
Are you running any kind of boot scripts/tweaks?

It may just be zen bound. I flashed the franco kernel and it didn't seem to have as many problems as far as overheating goes, but now it will just freeze at normal temperatures when doing something simple like web browsing. It did that twice today. However, I have Trinity Kernel Toolbox because it shows my cpu temp in the status bar. I'll uninstall that and try the lean kernel.
I forgot to add, no boot scripts or tweaks. It gets semi hot if I run a full benchmark in quadrant, but not anything serious. I've turned the gpu to 700 and cpu to 1700 before without any issues benchmarking in quadrant or geekbench.

It sounds pretty normal at 88 degrees and the whole reboot thing is a known fault, well I know that happens to my Nexus 7. To me it sounds like there is nothing to worry about. I did play zen bound and it was about 80-88 degrees.

Nexus CPU Temperature

Hello guys..
People have reported that nexus 4 gets too hot, too warm...but too does not say any number..
Lets talk about numbers here
After normal use (facebook,gmail, light apps) for 30 mins my CPU temp is 49-50 (Celsius)
After playing Need for speed most wanted for 30 mins my CPU temp is 62-64 (Celsius)
After talking on phone for 30-40 mins my CPU temp is 52-54 (Celsius)
My average CPU temp is 50 (Celsius)
is it normal....?? or should i be worried..
It feels a little uncomfortable while holding it at 60 (Celsius) will a case help me in feeling more comfortable )
What is it for you guys..??

I believe the temperature limit is 70 degrees, or that just might be trickster mod or my motley kernel.

Maybe you are in a place with bad signal? What is the room temperature?
After 30 mins of call my CPU temp is about 40°C...
But, average CPU temp 50°C... it's high unless heavy use yes, is it an app who calculated that?
In idle (after 15 / 20 mins) what is your CPU temp? Maybe a rogue app in the background who use your CPU
Maybe a case will be more comfortable for you but it keeps more heat...

Ya cell reception is bad in my area so it may be high..after 15-20 idle mins my cpu temp is 43-44 (Celsius)
I maself calculated average..i am not quite sure about the average though
Can u please tell me how can i find out if there is any rogue app in background causing CUP temp to increase..?

There are 3 options to reduce the temperature:
- open your phone and place a copper plate http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2144652
- try a task/process manager/monitor from the Playstore to find active background apps (I don't think it will really help...)
- or root your phone and edit the file "thermald.conf" in system/etc/
I didn't open my phone, it's a bit risky, so I modified the " thermald.conf" file.

And I've also placed a modified "thermald.conf"-file where the temp. limit is set at 31°C (°C always means the battery-temps - not cpu!)
at 31°C: limits the cpu from 1.5GHz to 1.2GHz, gpu full speed (400MHz)
at 35°C: cpu stays at 1.2GHz, limits gpu from 400MHz to 325MHz
...
at 39°C: cpu to 1.1GHz, gpu to 200MHz, lcd display brightness reduced
...
at 45°C: all limited (same value than orig. file has)
If you modify the file, don't forget permissions: -rw-r--r--

Can someone explain this overheating paranoia? I'm not being a ****, I just really don't get it. I've seen my GPU on my computer hit 90* and its fine. Most processors are rated for temperatures way higher than 60*C, so why is everyone freaking out about 60*? Of course the phone will get warm, its a pocket sized computer with a dedicated graphics chip.

I have my SGN4F for a few days now and normally it runs just fine, but when it comes to gaming... it just sucks! I wonder what is the cause of this. According to AnTuTu it seems like overheating and throttling issue, as after the test run statistics shown that my performance gradually lower and stopped at around 60% of its maximum. Asphalt 8 for example runs fine, just a small stutter at the beginning of every map (mostly visible when the map name appears and flows around the screen), but for example Dungeon Hunter 5 is most time almost unplayable - tried playing the same mission more times and sometimes it is OK and sometimes i can't even do a combo, as it lags so hard, that the game cannot detect it. Similar story with Modern Combat 5, which seems to be unresponsive, but when i look to a corner of the map, where just few things with no detail is placed, it runs buttery smooth.
May i ask you for your gaming/3D experience? Is the problem caused by throttling? I have read a few articles here about it and i know that Snapdragon seems to be having problems with it but there is a lot of people reporting great performance with no lag at all. So i would like to find a final answer. So my questions are (the more of you answer them the better )
1. Is this phone powerful enough to run these games (Modern Combat 5, Asphalt 8, Dungeon Hunter 5) with decent FPS (ideally caped at 60fps)?
2. Does your phone overheat? Please specify which HW version you have.

am not a gamer or anything
for mu usage i get around 5.25 to 5,5 Hours SOT

So today I tested my device with with 3D Mark... the test alone was not enough to stress the cpu so the results were mostly average and started to be a bit worse with every next test in a row as the device heated up a bit more every time
So I tried two different approaches:
1. Put the phone on laptop cooling pad to see the result and it was insanely high it has beaten every other SD805 smartphone in the test and scored the same result as HTC M9 with SD810 and Adreno 430

2. Played Dungeon Hunter 5 until it started heating up and throttling the cpu and then run the test again - the score was.. very bad
My conclusion is that it really is caused by CPU throttling... the only question here is how to overcome this issue as i am not willing to lower the resolution or throttle the CPU manually to get fluid but lower FPS

I'm having the same, when gaming for like 5/10 mins it throttles down and framerate drops.
Hardware limitations, if the note 4 was as easy to open up as the note 3 i would made cooling adjustments, like some customised shielded copper plate that would cover a bigger part.

As you can see in this link the CPU and such are covered with shields before they hit the heat dispensing plackers. lots of loss in heat distribution.

Sad to hear this, i have real luck on things which have problems with overheating but if your SGN 4 is rooted some users reported that they were able to play after disabling the overheat protection and their temps settled around 70°C so you could try that

that is because it has a slow GPU (graphic chip) so it wil lagg... unless u try low setting maybe.

I also tried to tweak the game with GL tools. I'm getting solid 30 fps at first but then it just ****in dips down to 15 which are unplayable

It's not completely true!
I made some tests running PUBG, and I noticed that the CPU heats up a lot after 5 minutes playing, causing Throttling, monitoring the frequency I saw that the processor has limited the maximum clock to 499 (Big cluster) and 403 (Little cluster) this happens when cell reaches ~ 45 degrees. unfortunately the only way I found to solve this was to disable Thermal Throttling, which is NOT RECOMMENDED!

big and lil cluster lol
dont forget thjs phone is just a 8 core a53.... which are slow cores.. not like a72/73 those are performance cores.
i mean still the Motorola phones feel soo smooth even doh it only has 2gb ram and slow cpu. its just smooth

i am running stock android nougat with elemental X kernel. my game is lagging. there are huge frame drops. please suggest a good rom and kernel combo for consistent frame rates.

the best is to flash vegito kernel & overclock cpu to 1.8ghz & gpu to 600mhz,and set throttling to 80 or 90

even at low setting? cause it was playable on my GPD XD that only has a quad core and i dont even know what gpu.
but when pugb droped it played it at low like 20-30fps

there are frame drops at low settings too. phone is heating up 46°c and cores stopped running. i check the core status while playing too. i over clock big cores to 1600mhz and when they take load they drop down to 499mhz this is when frame rate goes to 10fps. please give suggestions about good rom and respective kernel and kernel governor
I tried GLTools and GFXTools they too are not helpful in my case.

My Solution for PUBG lagging on G4+
Set graphics and frame rate to lowest. Remove back & back cover of the phone so heat dissipation will be fast and phone will run faster. Use third party app like greenify to force stop unwanted ram eating applications. Now you are much closer to chicken dinner. Let me know if this helps you too. All the best

Playing the game by sitting in front of a table fan fixes all lagging issues.
