I always have it set at 50â„… with auto brightness and all the way down in bed again with auto brightness. Full is too bright for me. I'd be surprised if it's burn in. Not even used it for two weeks yet. I speculate it's a manufacturing defect that plagued AMOLED screens of past in various models. Just shocked in 2016 we are still talking about such an issue.

Amoled Burn In ?

So I have been reading around a lot about amoled burn-in now in the past in had crazy problems with amoled screen i.e pink hue. Now I'm in absolute love with my new gs4 and want it to last a long time but I'm afraid I might get that dreadful burn-in. Anyone else worried??

Not at all. I purchased the S1 on launch. It went to my wife and now my daughter has it. Still going with no problems. I bought the S2 at launch. Passed it down to my other daughter. Still going with no problems. I still have my work S3 which has no problems. And I preordered the S4 and love it. So you could call me a fanboy of Samsung but you would be wrong. I have owned all types and manufacturers. Including iPhone LOL. For me personally, Samsung has been the best phone around and I have not had any issues with them.
Ummmm I mean yes I am scared to death and I think you should dump the S4 right away. I would sacrifice and take it off your hands for $100

Just like crawrj, I've had the s1, s2, and Gnex. All had amoled screens, all were just great when it came to the screen. Never had any burn in issues here as well.

I have burn in on my GNexus and my epic touch. It's not too visible but I notice it every now an then. On the epic touch it is on the notification bar area when I go into gallery to view a full size image on white images I can notice the top area is darkend. I think this is due to how I use my device. I have the screen on for a good 6-7 hours a day at work listening to YouTube.
I had burn in with my s2 with the amoled+ screen. Something else failed on the phone and the refurb didn't have burn in already. I had burn in of the notification area and keyboard letters.
I have my s2 and there is a very slight burn with a line for the bottom row of icons on the home screen. But you can only see it on a very cold day and when the screen is 100% white. On a regular temperature day it is not noticeable at all.
I've had several of Samsung's phones all with amoled screens and I've never had any problems with them. I haven't even heard of that happening, which doesn't mean it's impossible, but it's probably fairly unlikely that you will have that issue on the S4.
I had the OG Epic, E4GT, S2, S3, and got the S4 on the launch date early morning (first phone I ever got at launch haha) and I have never had any problems!

My gnex had burn in issues but you could only really tell when the brightness was less than 50%.
This week I'm sending my Nexus S out to pasture. I am the 2nd over and I bought it with the burn-in. It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like ginger bread and beautiful widgets are to blame. That's what brought me here. Can I expect more of the same? I realize my device is very old in Android years and hopefully the screens are better.
It probably will eventually get burn in. Long screen on times while using the phone without the screen changing much is culprit. A repair center I was at said they would get you a replacement if you had tep.
I have to think this can/will happen depending on the usage. If you have your screen to never time out and it is left on for most the day on 100% brightness or maybe if you are using the device as your alarm clock every night and the screen is kept bright. Have never done any of these things but would like to hear from someone that has used a similar device every night as an alarm clock.

Yup I think it depends on your usage model.& many will never see burn-in on the screen. But a major use of my phone is for navigation in the car. The screen is on for maybe hours at a time and, in summer, gets hot and on full brightness. Google Navigation has display elements on the screen that are essentially static. So I decided AMOLED was a bit of a poor choice, and went for a LCD phone. YMMV.
Shame, I would have maybe considered an S4 if it had an LCD.

To all those saying "impossible", "using it for year and year with no burn-in" etc, here, my 2 cents. The attached pictures is a burn-in on my SGS3, i took a pic with the screen displaying an all gray test pattern, on low brightness. I did post-process the pic to make it more visible, so in reality it doesn't look that bad, but it is definitely there and is definitely bad enough to notice on most relatively evenly-colored, yet bright enough, apps. I've noticed it first while browsing the Google Play market
BTW, the burn-in source is very obvious, it's the Waze navigation app elements, the one in the middle is ETA. Not too surprising, considering the fact the screen runs at max brightness and is really hot during navigation, true most of the year here.
PS: The device is a bit under 1 year old

The streaks or thin black lines and are stationary in the background.. mostly seen in shades of grey.
It used to be common with older generation AMOLED screens. Manufacturing defect was the common reason.
I'm not sure what to do now as other than this issue my device is perfect. RMA will be a hassle.
Will Google send me out a device before I send the current one back?

Gotcha, I thought you were referring to the trail of darkness that is visible when a black background moves over a grey or blue one. This would be normal AMOLED behavior.
However stationary lines... I've never seen that before, definitely not on my Pixel. I would hope Google would send out a device first so you aren't out a phone. But expect a holding charge on the card used to purchase the device.
Mine has the lines. Really have to look to see them. Doesn't bother me the way it would years ago.

I agree it doesn't bother me as much as it would in the past but I have gone for RMA. If it's the same and not worse on the replacement then I'll just live with it.
There was an interesting video by Erica Griffin where she touches on this issue. Interesting watch.

I had it on my first Pixel, it was very obvious actually. Could even see it watching normal videos. I since swapped for the Pixel XL, and I still have at least one darker mark, visible when I pull down the notification panel. It is however very hard to see, I have to be looking for it so it doesn't bother me. But seems kinda weird.. my Nexus 6 never had any of those issues. (And I had 3, thank goodness for accidental coverage lol cracked the screen twice)
My replacement is much better but there are still some streaks. However I need to look for them. They are not that obvious. I'll stick with the handset for the time being. Guess this is a side effect of AMOLED tech.

RMA'd twice due to AMOLED issues (streaks/tints), on my 3rd device and same issues so I gave up and decided to just live with it. At this price point this is a bit disappointing. Had the same issues with Samsung AMOLEDs as well but was able to return them and get near flawless displays so I know that they can manufacture them to better tolerances. I'm using a screen equalizer app from the play store to overlay a transparent green area on the pink side of the display to hide it from myself which works pretty good but sucks that this is the case.

Hands on

So I set it up and have been playing with it for about an hour now. The software is so smooth, butter!! It feels great in the hand. The back is so much better now. Not as slippery as the OG XL. Definitely not a fingerprint magnet. The display is great. I'm not sure why some people are having issues. If you turn off the auto brightness and set it to about 60% you're set. Increase and decrease when needed. The bezels are small. I have a Note 8 so I'm use to the small bezels. These are just as good. The sides aren't as curved as the N8, but I actually think it's going to be better. Typing and touch sensitivity sometimes gets messed up with the N8 because of the curved display. The front facing speakers are best I've heard on a phone in a while. Remember it's just a phone, so your expectation shouldn't be real high. Lol. Love they are front facing. I can actually hold my device in landscape to watch a video and not have to worry about covering up the speaker.
I haven't used the camera or can't comment on the battery. I'll edit this tomorrow to include a little more.
If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'll be up for a while tonight playing with it.

TWO year warranty?? Now that's how you keep customers. Take notes, OnePlus.
The muted colors and potential quick setting burn-in have been my concerns with the phone since getting it two days ago (although I don't notice the color issue unless I compare it to a different device). I have no grittiness to my display, and the blue tint on mine is battery noticable - requiring an exaggerated viewing angle for it to become apparent. The two year warranty, though, is great and is probably the deciding factor in me keeping the phone. This is great news.
I definitely like the 2 year warranty! Cool
I've been waiting for them to address the navigation button burn in since they switched to onscreen navigation buttons on Galaxy Nexus. Finally, I'm happy with that response and will wait for that update. Top notification area and navigation area needs more usage of white color to wear out those pixels.

Or does the Google warranty only cover "manufacturer defect" and not accidental damage?

They followed up with another post on the blue tint:
We want to add some info regarding the blue tint that some of you have been asking about. The slight blue tint is inherent in the display hardware and only visible when you hold the screen at a sharp angle. All displays are susceptible to some level of color shift (e.g. red, yellow, blue) when viewing from off angles due to the pixel cavity design. Similar to our choice with a cooler white point, we went with what users tend to prefer and chose a design that shifts blue.

This is the part of the post I don't like and sounds fishy....
"The update will also reduce the maximum brightness of the Pixel 2 XL by a virtually imperceptible 50 cd/m2 (nits), thereby significantly reducing load on the screen with an almost undetectable change in the observed brightness. "
"virtually imperceptible 50 cd/m2 (nits)" & "almost undetectable change in the observed brightness."
Now I have read that the Pixel 2 XL's peak brightness right now is 483 nits, which is not that bright compared to some other flagship screens. If I remember correctly, some get to the mid to high 500's. Nevertheless, 50 nits is 10.35% of 483. Your telling me I'm not going to notice a 10% reduction in brightness????? I find that VERY VERY hard to believe. Also, if you have to reduce a screens specs to make it work properly, wouldn't you call that a defect. Isn't that like buy a car that's advertised having 483 horsepower but then after you bought it, we decided for the engine to work properly, we had to reduce your max horsepower to 433?
Am I missing something here because I haven't really heard anyone upset about this? I mean I don't really know anything about the unit "nits", as the number gets larger does the amount of perceived brightness become more and more negligible?
It honestly seems brighter to me. My screen wasn't bright at max brightness and now it hurts my eyes.

Honestly, Pixel 2 XL screen is better than Galaxy S8+

I know, I know. I'm going going against what everyone else says, but I'm not trolling... I actually prefer this screen. Is it perfect? No. But my wife has the Galaxy S8 and I really do prefer the Pixel 2 XL screen over the Sammy's.
It actually has a more even color compared to the Samsung's. The S8 has a reddish tint when looking straight on that is uneven. Some areas are more red than others. Tilting the phone makes it worse. The Pixel's screen is nearly perfect looking straight on. I like the more natural colors too. And I find the Pixel 2 XL screen to be more visible in certain outdoor lighting. I think the 2 XL screen is slightly sharper looking too. Again, it's not without it's flaws, but all and all, I think I like this screen better than the competition.
This is utter nonsense, Samsung display is significantly brighter. That is not even subjective but a fact (565 nits vs 460 nits).
Unless your girlfriend has a defective device everything you said is wrong.
I dig my pixel 2 xl and would never trade it for Samsung but this kind of Google *********** annoys me.
Edit: fixed nits
*MOD EDIT*
Let's watch the cursing. Thanks.
I agree that despite all the idiots *****ing about the color representation, my screen is nice. No overly blue tint shift or burn in. It looks good. I have installed Oreo colorizer but only because of withdrawal from a 6p sammified
If you actually read my post, you would have noticed I said it's brighter in certain outdoor conditions. Content seems more visible during overcast conditions on the Pixel 2 XL. I'm not talking about nits. There's more to visibility than nits. Screen reflectivity and other factors are important too.
This screen is better than the Samsung's. Colors are nicer. It's more visible outside and I don't have any of the so called issues that the few sky is falling people out there have been whining about.

Just is. Maybe it's the polarization but it is brightness be damned
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I kind of agree. I use Automate and have a profile that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the lux value. I had to lower the multiplier because it was much brighter in different lighting conditions. I am also coming from an S8+. I really don't know why everyone is complaining about the screen. It's not that bad at all.
I don't have any complaints about blue tint, grain, black crush, burn-in, muted colors or anything like that. But what I really dislike is that there's an orange/brown tint to everything that at times makes stuff look vintage 70s. I'm going to see if the saturated mode in the new update will fix it, otherwise I'm going to have to install a custom kernel with color controls to try to get the colors right. The colors on this thing is definitely not properly calibrated.
It's not. I have both phones. I don't mind the more realistic colors of the Xl. I want to see what the update does.
I have both and the XL 2 has become my daily driver! Looking good so far!
The screen looks fine but it is, by no stretch of the imagination, better than the screen on the S8, S8+ or Note 8. Don't get me wrong, after having my 4 month stint with the S8 (which was great), I'm absolutely loving my LG G30 and would still take it over the S8, despite the screen. The screen on the V30 is nowhere near as crisp and clear as the screen on my S8 was. And to say it gets brighter than the S8 screen would just be a flat out lie.
I even took time to compare my V30 side by side with a 2 XL and another S8 in the Verizon store and the S8 screen puts both to shame in every regard. Side by side the V30 and 2 XL screens look identical, but that's to be expected considering LG made them both, seemingly around the same time.
Personally, I'm willing to give that screen up to get rid of Touchwiz and gain those beautiful sounding front facing speakers on the 2 XL (mine arrives Monday). But I cannot pretend that I'm getting a superior screen with either my V30 or 2 XL, because that simply is not true.
