IMPORTANT: Screen

So can anyone confirm that the striations or lines on the screen are normal??
Im talking about when you pull down the notifications bar there are light lines that come down vertically and soma cases are horizontal.
Please let me know I got 30 days with it. thanks!

my first nexus s had darker whites than the display model at the store. I would recommend comparing yours with the store display or another persons nexus s, I think this is the best way, since we cant physically see how your phone screen looks. good luck

Are you referring to the gray section where your service provider is listed? Or the very dark area where the notifications are listed?
If I stare I can see some lines in the gray area.
I do see a slight grid pattern in the power control widget.

I don't have a Nexus S, but I have a Galaxy S i9000M which has a similar (if not exactly the same) screen. If I bring up a screen that is a solid colour, I do notice some imperfections like you describe. They are hardly noticeable though.

Weird. My nexus doesn't have that and I would know, I modded my nexus 1 to be pretty much like gingerbread 6 months back, massive burn in.

actually no.... mine doesn't have any lines or defects.
the only lines are the horizontal ones separating the notifications.

I think I know what you mean. My N1 on certain backgrounds has very faint grey lines. Not always visible, even on white web pages

Why would that cause burn in more than anything else?

Yes, I can see it. I can see it on any AMOLED/SAMOLED phone I've ever come in contact with. It's the nature of AMOLED screens unlike most LCD screens. With AMOLED, each pixel is individually powered, and it's impossible to have each pixel (or subpixel) be identical, which leads to slight differences in output and color reproduction. An LCD screen is backlight by either florescent tubes or recently, LEDs, which produce an even backlight (usually) where the colors are controlled by filtering each pixel, rather than having to illuminate each pixel.
Anyway, I only really notice it when the brightness is at the minimum and it's very dark in the place I'm using my phone. If I crank up the brightness or if I'm in a well lit area, I don't notice it at all really. Although if it's VERY obvious, you might have a screen that's significantly lower quality than average... it happens, bad QC or something, exchange it.
Oh, and if you stare at a plasma TV long enough you'll notice the same thing... similar technology, each pixel illuminated individually.

Nexus Screen quality at high brightness

Hi,
So I opened my nexus 4 today. From what I had seen on YouTube and read was that the screen was superior to galaxy nexus. It is from every angle but I do have a question about its quality on medium to high brightness.
On medium to high brightness I can make out vertical lines of pixels, I suppose, like on my 1366*768 15.6" laptop. I think that there is something wrong because any colored background including the virtual buttons have vertical lines that I can distinguish at mid to high brightness. Even the white block or discs wallpaper can have these lines. Can someone please confirm or deny these vertical lines? Is this the screen technology or just this specific phone that I received?
I have nexus 7 and this has been perfect in every sense. Its not as high resolution as nexus 4 but the pixels are a result of both horizontal and vertical lines colliding resulting in no highly visible vertical lines.

I am not seeing anything out of the ordinary on the two wallpapers you mentioned at max.

Yeah, I didn't know the exact term for this but it does happen. Even on whites not just background or menu. So is it almost every n4 or just a few unlucky ones because I am trying to figure out what I should do next.

It happens at medium to high brightness...Just put the brightness at high and then close in a little bit to the screen and your will notice that on those 2 backgrounds specifically the discs one. Also another way is to open up settings and then look at settings logo on the top left and you can see the blue part with vertical lines.

Again... Not seeing this. What happens if you reboot your device. Do you see it right away?

Yeah. It might takes it a few seconds but those vertical lines are so obvious. How are you not seeing them

Look the gradient in setting very hardly and you will see them. But Nothing on white,or collored wallpaper. Just on this gradient and on grey wall paper.

So many people not seeing it. Maybe it was a bad unit. I don't know how to explain it but once again I will try. When you turn up brightness all the way up the screen is bright but the way the pixels are packed they look like bunch of lines put together.
Think, shredded paper put together again to make a piece of paper. Open up a page of blue background and it should be apparent unless mine was truly a bad unit. If even then no one sees that effect maybe it was the unit that I got.
Also I'm not talking about the settings gray background lines. That'd just the wallpaper which looks like 8 bit that someone mentioned. Looks the same on nexus 7.

Guys, this is an issue with the wallpaper itself, not the phone. Please close these threads.
The pictures and wallpapers you see this on are simply not rendered for the high resolution
and dynamic range of the Nexus4 screen.
The Nexus4 screen is much better than what the picture was drawn on.

You will not see this if you're watching something like the Transformer's movie. I believe what Minddroid said is right. It is an artifact of the crappy image used in the settings screen.
Take a screenshot and put the screenshot on any cheap TN panel monitor and you'll see the same thing (though it is not as obvious because the monitor is a TN. If you have an IPS, it'll be more pronounced. Try displaying the image on an iPhone 5 screen and you'll likely see the same thing)
I initially thought I had problems with my display due to there being gradients on the bubble live wallpaper...but when I took a screenshot and put it on my TN monitor, lo and behold, I see the same thing.
They need to move to high-resolution images....but they won't because majority of android owners are still on low-end phones. Lol.

I see a white banding from top to bottom, size about the ON/OFF sliding button in the Setting screen, and in the position of those buttons also. I think this is a defect but it's normal as many Nex4 suffered this issue. Only noticeable when brightness is 100%

I don't have this issue, I think you should RMA your device.

Actually I have thse line, but i see them only at high brightness or special grey wallpaper or color. it's not very powerfull but not as important as headphone issue or speaker noise.
I'm guessing that a lot of people have these line but not seeing them.

RMA is impossible when you buy an US version and you're in Vietnam. Waiting too long for the device and got some sort of imperfect product Anw, I love it, and I think most of people don't notice these lines
Set 100% brightness and use some gray background such as Settings screen, Chrome without any tab and you would see them

It's definitely not a wallpaper issue, I compare my nexus 4 to a ipad with same wallpaper at max brigthness, you can make out these vertical line on the nexus 4 but nothing on the iPad, you can't really see it unless you look for it. Most of you will say don't look for it, well what is seen cannot be unseen. Also nexus 4 probably have the worst IPS Display ever, vertical line, screen flickering, gamma issue, somewhat washout color compare to other IPS display, and worst viewing angle then other IPS display. Don't get me wrong, it's still very good, but not great like people make it out to be.

Yeah, that why iProducts are more expensive than the others. My display has 1 band of vertical lines that are a little bit brighter than the others, some kind of backlit issue, but never mind as they are only clearly visible on 100% brightness.

Black streaks on Pixel screen?

I'm getting major throwback to my earlier AMOLED screen phones.
Just noticed my Pixel has those infamous streaks. Those used to be earlier generation AMOLED like the Galaxy Nexus. Especially visible on grey backgrounds?!
I thought manufacturers fixed these issues.
Anyone else see these?
Test to see on your Pixel use the Tapatalk app in dark mode and you will see it on the background grey.
Once you see you can't "unsee"
I just want to smoke sure I'm not a isolated case before deciding what to do about it.

None at all here as well, and i develop on it so the screen is on about 9-12 hours a day at least.

The streaks or thin black lines and are stationary in the background.. mostly seen in shades of grey.
It used to be common with older generation AMOLED screens. Manufacturing defect was the common reason.
I'm not sure what to do now as other than this issue my device is perfect. RMA will be a hassle.
Will Google send me out a device before I send the current one back?

Gotcha, I thought you were referring to the trail of darkness that is visible when a black background moves over a grey or blue one. This would be normal AMOLED behavior.
However stationary lines... I've never seen that before, definitely not on my Pixel. I would hope Google would send out a device first so you aren't out a phone. But expect a holding charge on the card used to purchase the device.

Mine has the lines. Really have to look to see them. Doesn't bother me the way it would years ago.

I agree it doesn't bother me as much as it would in the past but I have gone for RMA. If it's the same and not worse on the replacement then I'll just live with it.
There was an interesting video by Erica Griffin where she touches on this issue. Interesting watch.

I had it on my first Pixel, it was very obvious actually. Could even see it watching normal videos. I since swapped for the Pixel XL, and I still have at least one darker mark, visible when I pull down the notification panel. It is however very hard to see, I have to be looking for it so it doesn't bother me. But seems kinda weird.. my Nexus 6 never had any of those issues. (And I had 3, thank goodness for accidental coverage lol cracked the screen twice)

My replacement is much better but there are still some streaks. However I need to look for them. They are not that obvious. I'll stick with the handset for the time being. Guess this is a side effect of AMOLED tech.

RMA'd twice due to AMOLED issues (streaks/tints), on my 3rd device and same issues so I gave up and decided to just live with it. At this price point this is a bit disappointing. Had the same issues with Samsung AMOLEDs as well but was able to return them and get near flawless displays so I know that they can manufacture them to better tolerances. I'm using a screen equalizer app from the play store to overlay a transparent green area on the pink side of the display to hide it from myself which works pretty good but sucks that this is the case.

My two Pixels didn't have any tints whatsoever. The streaks only. Current one is much better so I'm sticking with it. Never seen a perfect OLED screen. It's a perk I guess. LG P-OLED are the worst. Dirty blotches! Yuck!

Latest batch of Pixel 2 XL's still have screen issues

Here is my two hour old Pixel 2 XL VS Huawei Mate 9. My pixel has a build date of 10/12/2017.
Dead on:

Slight tilt:

Google RMAed my phone after I sent them those pictures.
UPDATE:
1. All OLED have some sort of color shift.
2. Not all OLED screens have a strong color shift
3. Not all Pixel Two XL's are created equal. Some have more color shift than others.
4. This is the only good phone on Verizon that will have custom ROM support.
5. Anyone on a GSM carrier should learn to live with the color shift or buy a OnePlus device.
6. LG still has QC issues on ever phone they make.
My replacement device still has a blue tint but it is better than my original device.
Overall this is the best phone on the market currently with Verizon support. I got to use my dad's iPhone X today and iOS is not ready for a phone without a home button.
Update 12/17/17:
I am on my third device and all three had noticable blue shift. The second device had screen burn in.

Sorry for dumb question. What differences am I looking for between the pictures?

I just got mine today in US. I honestly don't have any complaints with mine. I downloaded Oreo Colorizer to give the display a wider range of colors, which works for now. I'm sure Google will address the colors with an update. As for the tint, maybe I'm just not seeing it, but this screen looks gorgeous to me at all angles.

The pixel two XL has a blue tint notably on the top of the screen when looking at an angle. The mate 9 has no such tint.

My V30 has the same blue tint issue. It won't change unless Google decides to switch display partners

The blue tint is from the polarizer. If you want a new screen, let it be for another reason - you have a few to chose from, potentially.

I have 10 My only issue is touchscreen sensitivity is iffy. Especially on the edges and bottom right corner.

I'm also hardware revision 10. The blue tint is there, but it's much more subtle in person than what I was expecting based upon the videos and pictures I saw before getting the phone. I don't know if it means I have an updated version with the display issue toned down, however. But I thought it was worth mentioning.

If the blue tint was from the polarizer, wouldn't all LCD screens suffer this? LG has plenty of experience making LCD screens, the majority of which polarizers do not cause this blue shift.
Could blue tint also come from using plastic as substrate and potentially being less transparent to longer wavelengths than glass? Viewing at a less than 90° angle increasing the amount of plastic the light has to travel through and thus potentially filtering out more of the lower energy (longer, red-er) wavelengths?

Mine is rev 10 as well. I'm starting to get use to the blue tint. I am very curious to see what differences the replacement device will have. The one I have now is a Canadian model even though I am in the US.

That makes sense to me. I had heard about the polarizer and wondered what if anything that would do to the look of the screen.

It would take awhile before anyone starts seeing revised versions and that's even if Google does anything about it. I have a feeling they probably won't do any major hardware revisions and just push a software update out for screen saturation.

It would be good to mention build date as well. Fixes in production quality (both display plant and phone assembly) will not increase hw version. HW-version increases when the hw-design is changed by R&D (new PCB, changed components etc).

But these issues are not new to Google, of course they have seen these issues during normal internal testing and beta test.
And some issues might be basic production issues solved in the next batches.
Regardless, it is very difficult to predict what happens and when.
Also sad to see that Google does not respond at all so far.

Might be dumb question but we're do I find my build date.My XL 2 has the screen burn in ,the blue tint , and now while on phone call loud pitch and phone reboots 2 to 3 times a day .Google shipped me a new replacement arriving today see if there's any difference.Google has been very accommodating but still in denial there's a real problem

Pretty much all screens use a standard polarizer, the Pixel 2 phones use circular polarization, however if it was the polarizer you would expect it on the Pixel 2 non-XL model as well, so I don't think it is the polarizer, but who knows, maybe it is an interaction between the circular polarizer and the POLED vs the SAMOLED.

Why are the Pixel 4 screens so poor in terms of uniformity?

So I got my.hands on a pixel 3 earlier this year and had nothing but problems with the screen in terms of overall uniformity. Pink splotches or top half pink bottom half normal.
Fast forward 9 months I thought I'd give the Pixel 4 a go. Newer tech, thought these issues would have been ironed out, but obviously not.

Top left looks pink whilst the bottom right almost looks greeny?
I can't surely be the only one who has these issues?

I do miss the Pixel Line and the S10e just doesn't feel the same!

Sure! mine looks similar especially at night with low brightness it even has bleeding and flashes light (try to do it yourself, go to gallery on a totally black picture, put the brightness at maximum and see yourself, pixel should be off, and they are on instead and they even flash white sometimes)

Why accept that thought on a product that cost as much as it did!?

I'm such a big fan of Google, I had pixel 2 and 3xl, I bought the pixel 4 hoping that the camera and the whole hardware would be great, but for the price we paid it..
Not so worth imo
Thinking about moving to iPhone 11 pro, the camera so really good and is overpriced just like the pixel 4.

I love the Pixel line for the software but the hardware is trash.

I can not reproduce this to the extent your photograph is showing.
While I can discern the border between the 'forehead' and the screen, it's only there if I look at it a lot closer and more intently than I would during normal use.
I've not seen any pixels flashing, perhaps you have a faulty display/connector, I'd be looking into that before using your screen as an example of all Pixel 4's having issues with their display.
I'd like to add that I think it's odd that your screenshot shows a darker black behind the legacy software buttons you've enabled at the bottom of the screen than the rest of your screen shows - odd because both areas are displayed by the screen, they should be equally black.
Finally, perhaps you should look into taking a new picture where your highlights aren't blown / your image isn't overexposed, I think it's likely there's something wrong with your RGB channels.
I'm rather enjoying my Pixel 4, while it might not be a huge upgrade from the Pixel 3 you seem to come from, I come from a Moto G3 (2015), which means it's a world of difference for me. The only drawback I can think of is the battery life, but both during and outside of work hours I'm near chargers often enough for it to matter little. I'd say calling the hardware "trash" is a bit of an exaggeration, as much of an exaggeration as your photographed proof appears to me

The smaller Pixel 4 uses an LG OLED panel (which has gotten better year after year of Google using them on their Pixel devices, but have notoriously exhibited uniformity issues across the screen -much more so than the Samsung panel the 4XL uses). That said, thankfully I don't have that red/magenta tint that seems to be fairly common for this panel (search reddit). I do however have the green tint that seems to come from the bottom of the panel up (that is a software issue caused by bad calibration of the 90hz display -regardless of whether you have 90hz on or not). It is more prominent on some screens than others, but it seems that most/all Pixel 4s suffer from that.
Anyway, I agree that Google just can't get their hardware right and, frankly, it's because they don't care. They just want people to focus on all their software innovations and since no one makes Google Play Edition phones anymore, we're stuck with their poor design and implementation.

I can't surely be the only one who has these issues?
Really not sure whether to return the phone for a refund or to take a gamble and get a replacement. The thought of playing the lottery again and constantly losing is a major put off.
I do miss the Pixel Line and the S10e just doesn't feel the same!

On dark theme when booting device during Google logo everything is OK screen corners are totally black but when Google logo animation starts grey tint is appearing in bottom right corner. Could you check on your pixel also?

Sure! mine looks similar especially at night with low brightness it even has bleeding and flashes light (try to do it yourself, go to gallery on a totally black picture, put the brightness at maximum and see yourself, pixel should be off, and they are on instead and they even flash white sometimes)
