I searched around before deciding to make a new thread. Did not see anything specific to what I had a question about, unless it is buried deep in another thread.
Is there a suggested de-bloat list for the Verizon Note 3 running on the OB6 Lollipop firmware? For NON-ROOTED phones.
What I have turned off so far has not caused any issues seen yet.
I would like to make sure that the packages that track data usage are turned off, as well as any apps that report back to Verizon.
Would greatly appreciate if someone could post even a partial list to get this started.
I would also like to add that I am using the free version of FoxFi and tether is working!
You install FoxFi, then when you try to check the start tether box for the first time, it will make you setup a lock screen pin/pattern. After that it will install a certificate.
Once you have that done, when you try to enable tether again, it pops up a message that will take you to the Default built in tether. Once you click to enable that, tether starts working.
Here is something odd I noticed.
You can go back into the FoxFi app once you are tethered and working, then turn off tether WITHIN the FoxFi app. The default hotspot app remains enabled and continues to work.
Anyone else notice this? Also wondering if the FoxFi data limit is still imposed after you turn the tether off in its app.

Unless you are on a grandfathered unlimited data plan, Verizon's Hotspot should already be usable even without WiFi. Last I saw...all Verizon tiered data plans included hotspot.

Hi all,
After a long research and playing with different options, I finally found a way to make Foxfi work again on my Verizon Unlimitted data, none rooted, OG5 with latest update. I'm not gurantte that it will work for everyone because I only tested on my phone. So feel free to try out my method and if you blow up your device, it's your fault and your responsiblity. Once you able to bypass VZ lock down, you should able to connect normally WITHOUT have to go through all the steps. Enough said let try it out
1) Turn off your 4G, turn on your wifi.
2) Open foxfi and follow through until it failed by VZ message.."please call bahbahbah", hit cancel when you see the message
3)Switch to wifi and disconnect it from connecting to your router (open the connection then hit forget). Now your wifi is on but you shouldn't have internet
4)Close your Foxfi then reopen, then go through the process again, but at the end you will received a message that it unable to connect, hit cancel.
5) Now turn off your wifi and turn on your 4G, try to connect with foxfi and it should prompt you to enable hot spot in settings, launch settings and turn on hotspot. Bang, you should be sucess!!!
Once this is done, next time you just launch your foxfi the normal way, no need to go through these steps again.
Please provide feed back and good luck.
Well I heard that Foxfi is working again, don't know how/why?? but it's working, so no need to try anything. Thread closed.
How reliable is the paid version of FoxFi? I used it in the past on my S4 before I rooted it and it worked fine, but it was only the free version. Aside from the 500 meg-per-use limit, I had no problem. I tried it briefly a little earlier and it didn't work, but I might have missed a step. Almost forgot to mention, but after installing and running the app for the first time, a message appeared saying 'Network may be monitored'. Should I be worried about this? Thanks.

it is very reliable unless Verizon decided to screw us up. That message is normal you can safely ignore it.

Thanks. One other question, is there a way to FoxFi without having to be stuck with the system lock screen? I like to use Zui as my lock screen, and having to use the system one I have to sign into my phone twice. Is there a setting in Security I can disable or something?
Download this app, run it and it should remove foxfi lock screen. http://pdanet.co/help/RemoveLock.apk
After that you can set your own lock screen

Alright...dumb question...why would I use Fox-Fi as opposed to using the built in hot-spot feature? thanks in advance.

If you try to use the built-in mobile hotspot, it'll respond by telling you to either call Verizon or visit their site to enable that feature. With FoxFi, it allows you to use the mobile hotspot without having to pay extra for the convenience of it. You open the app, start it, then tap the button that redirects you to the mobile hotspot feature built into the phone. Basically, the app bypasses the need to enable the hotspot through your carrier. The full version is only $7.95 and you have about seven days, I think, to try it out. I'd recommend installing the 'Remove Lock' app mentioned in this thread should you choose to try FoxFi, since the app requires you to set either a password or pin lock due to it creating a VPN when first used. I've been using it for a while and it works as well as any rooted Android phone with the hotspot feature enabled. Hope this helps.

Simple answer, the build in hot-spot you have to pay for Verizon data service plan. With Foxfi you pay 7$ one time fee and use it forever...

Both replies are very helpful, thanks. I was a bit confused because I have never been charged for using my built in hot spot. With that said, I have not used it for extended periods of time, streaming, etc...

No, not at all. Nothing on my bill indicate useage...
Per VZW...
Here's the breakdown:
If you have a new Verizon "Share Everything" plan, you can use your phone's built-in mobile hotspot feature or a third-party tethering app free of charge? but you're limited to the data in your Share Everything data pool. Overage rates for shared data plans are $15 per gigabyte.
If you have an old usage-based data plan, you can now use a third-party tethering app free of charge. You can also use your phone's mobile hotspot feature for an additional $20 per month (per device), which also gets you an additional 2GB of data.
If you have an old unlimited plan, you are technically required to pay $20 per month for tethering? whether you're using a third-party app or your phone's mobile hotspot feature. However, Verizon has no way of knowing if you're using a third-party app to tether.

For the most part, it works without issues.
What I have discovered. Devices cant talk across it (as far as I can tell), and sometime it bugs out (every once in awhile). Overall works great.
The annoying part is damn icons in the top of your phone you cant get rid of. 2 for foxfi, 1 for hotspot.

So Verizon is pushing the OTA update from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 on my Note 4, does anyone know if this will break Fox-Fi/PDAnet?
I have no problem with foxfi... after the update....
Is hotspot/tethering option missing on all us carrier in the settings I'm using sprint version & it's not here at all...this phone is useless 2 me if I can't find a way to fix this.

Hey man did this work? I haven't gotten my S8 in the mail yet so I can't test it...
Mobile Hotspot and Tethering is available on the T-Mobile version by default, both in the settings menu and in quick launch
I have the verizon model and the hotspot option is available and working. Was not hidden.

This was a pleasant surprise for me, since AT&T had it removed from the quick settings on my S6.
Tethering Switch
by the way, if you want a really good "Hotspot Widget" that ACTUALLY works...and I literally tried probably 90% on the Play store and ONE did finally work...
Tethering Switch

DID work. It doesn't bring you to the HotSpot Settings first, and then you would have to turn on the HotSpot manually...this does it quickly, shows that it is enabled.

I tried this but didn't work for me with AT&T. I have a Tethering shorcut, but it takes you to the hotspot settings to turn it on manually like you mentioned. So I was excited to try this app out, however after I installed it, it just says it's Enabled (but it's not) and then when I tap it again it says Enabled again, not Disabled. Unless I go into my settings and turn it on, then the app will say Disabled (but doesn't really). So I guess I'll stick with what I have for now.
Hey I ended up returning my S8. I apologise for putting this info out about the Tethering app. It works perfectly on all my other ROMS. It is the only "widget" type app that worked on my LG G5 on stock rooted FW on MM. Anyway, I am not sure if you guys got Tethering to work on Verizon or whatever, but I had no issues with it on T-Mobile... However this app didn't work on T-Mobile on my S8 even.
Buy from Samsung?

You didn't by any chance purchase the phone directly from Samsung did you? I had the exact same problem with an S8 purchased directly from Samsung (got the free Gear VR promo) and I have Sprint.
There was no hotspot option anywhere in the setup menus. And of course, I did not notice this until 2 weeks later when I was on a trip. The hotel WiFi was messed up and I needed to use hotspot. It's not that it did not work, there was no option at all in Setup for Hotspot and Tethering.
I talked to Sprint, took it to a Sprint store for help, and talked to Samsung tech support. Nothing they all tried fixed it. Both Sprint and Samsung suggested the phone might be defective and I should pursue getting a replacement. That didn't make sense to me because WiFi and Cell Data were working fine, and hotspot is just software.
My fix was to do a full Factory Reset and then set it all up again. Tedious, but when it came back up, the Hotspot and Tethering option were there and it works perfectly now.
Recent update messed it up again?
Tried the adb method of Get/Push revealing Hotspot via Quick Tiles. Didn't work.
Any other ideas for regaining hotspot on the device? Without rooting?
Current date: Jan 7 2018.
i have same problem too, waiting for update
I tried that https://www.xda-developers.com/thre...ickbaity-tricks-for-your-new-galaxy-s8-or-s8/ but I cant even try itcoz I get "because an app etc about some permission", I tried to disable so many cant figure it out
So how does one Quick Toggle Tether? I use it all the time in my car
I actually work for Spectrum and have been doing their mobile field trial for awhile, basically its an MVNO with Verizon ( same as xfinity)
I'd like to somehow maintain my original ROM since it includes some Charter/Spectrum specific functions, but also get root. Is this possible currently?
Truth be told I really just want to edit my BUILD.PROP but can't get my device to show as authorized in ADB when booted into recovery. So if you have a way around that I don't need root then.
Did you ever get your question answered? I was debating signing up with spectrum mobile and was wondering if I could root to get around the 5GB hotspot limit.
I don't know if this was covered already but I couldn't find anything on this here.
This is if you want to un-cripple your mobile hotspot without rooting your phone. The "boss lady" and I use our hotspots as our separate full internet services so this is the main reason I've been rooting my phones over the years. Since it's becoming more difficult to root the latest phones this is a wicked alternative. This worked on my Cricket Stylo 3 M430 and it should work on others. Also worked on an LG V10. Didn't work on an LG Stylo 4 though.
Install an app from the Play Store called "Settings Database Editor" by "4A". This is one of the very best hacking apps I've ever used and it doesn't require root. The app is free and no ads so I'm sending this brother 5 bones because he deserves it. Read his info instructions and warning in his Play Store page.
Before you do anything with the app, attempt to enable your hotspot and let the bloody thing tell you it ain't going to work. Then close it out. This will make sure it writes a line inside the thing that says: "tether_entitlement_check_state" "5" because sometimes it's not there to edit. You could write the line yourself with the app but it's much quicker and easier to let the bloody thing do it for you.
Now open the app and scroll down "System Table" to that line: "tether_entitlement_check_state" "5" - Now tap the line and choose "Edit Value" and change the 5 (or whatever number it is-usually a 5 or a 1) to a 0 (zero). That's freaking it. Now close the app and enjoy your free Mobile Hotspot!
Btw, I just got this phone, it's on version "M43010g" and according to the LG website support page there is 1 more "Security Update" left for this, version "M43010i". Needless to say I never update anything when I have what I want working. I don't care what Screwgle says the next version does or update has. If my device does what I want it to do I ain't swallowing it, lol.
This did not work on my Stylo 3, I'm on virgin mobile.

I've used premium modified foxfi app for years. had have to know how to set up a proxy and have proxy server on the other device but it's worked. i switched to cricket 2 months ago. no Hotspot with my unlimited plan no problem right well... the app works the hotspot comes on... I can connect to it and the data flows. but then after a month or so, I receive a text message from cricket telling me that they noticed I'm using a proxy as a hotspot and that if I continue to do so that they will disconnect my service. so I'm going to check this out but if they discontinue my service I'm so switching back to Metro **** cricket

Hey brother, I think I know what the problem is. I've been using it on Cricket for 2 years without issue and then 3 weeks ago I got the same message. I think this is what's happening. I've been using it for over 2 years on an unlocked "non"-Cricket phone. Two months ago I got a Cricket Stylo 3 from Cricket because of the discount and didn't give it a second thought. When I got the message I figured it had to be because of the Cricket phone since most cell companies have their phones locked and prog'd a certain way to let them know what's you're doing. So I went back to my unlocked MetroPCS Stylo and so far I haven't been contacted by them again. I think for it to work, with any carrier, is to use an unlocked non-carrier phone. An unlocked MetroPCS phone will not be programmed to inform Cricket of anything and an unlocked Cricket phone will not be programmed to inform MetroPCS of anything. I think that's the only way I've been doing it for over 2 years without issue. Whether its the unlocking that does it or using a non-carrier phone that does it I'm not sure. I'm gong to wait a couple more months and if I don't get messaged about it by then I'm going to try my Cricket Stylo 3 again as I just paid 5 bones for an unlock code and it is now unlocked. If I get messaged about it again then I'll know its not the unlocking that is the thing but using an unlocked non-carrier phone that's the trick.
And btw, the "boss lady" is still using her unlocked MetroPCS phone's Hotspot and she never got the Cricket text message warning that you and I got. What does that tell you?
