is the note 5 better than the note 4? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have a note 4 and may have to get rid of my note 7 at some point and just wondering if I should get a note 5 or use my note 4.

Tbh its not that hard of a quest, im sure the majority will prefer the note 4 such as i, the note 5 has taken away expandable storage and the rf blaster but is given a performance boost with a newer processor.
So imo id stick with the note 4 as it is a much more diverse device, samsung dropped the ball on both the note 5 and obviously the note 7, here is what you do though, use your note 4 and install a note 7 port and it will feel brand spanking new, i have aurora 4.1 and i am absolutely loving my note 4 performance and battery wise.

In terms of processing power, yes the Note 5 is better than any of the Note 4 variants. But in terms of flexibility for everyday use the Note 4 is better as it has a microSDCard slot.

Other than only having 64gb of storage the note 5 is much better than the note 4 ( which i am using now lol).

But I can't use my micro SD card that is in my note 4?

Umm no lol. That would be a little hard due to the lack of an sd card slot.
Thats the only bad thing about the note 5 and the only reason i got rid of mine..64gb is not adequate storage for me.

Your oppinion about Note 1 to Note 2 to Note 3

Hello.
My understanding that jump from Note 1 to Note 2 was pretty significant in terms of technology, features and overall.
Do you think the same could be said about Note 2 to Note 3?
Yes very much so. Note 2 to note 3 is probably a bigger jump then the note 1 to note 2
Definitely!
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I say no, the jump from the N1 to N2 was huge, the N2 to N3 is like the S3 to S4. Spec bumps, slightly refreshed look, and new software.
Ergonomics were greatly improved with the N2, Spen was greatly improved, much bigger battery, LTE, etc.

Having had both N1 and N2 I would agree with this statement.
To respond to the post above me the galaxy S 3 to 4 was more of a gimmick upg than anything. The spec bump wasnt that much. The spen is improved again with this and the hardware is greatly improved. Not to mention software is a significant bump from 4.1.2 to 4.3.

Note 4 or Note Edge

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to know which one of the Note's you will desire to buy?
I personally like Note Edge. But what's up to you guys. Let's Discuss here.
Note edge for me.
Sent from Galaxy Note 3 (The beauty & beast)
Note edge is something special. So cute.
note edge is a gimmick without real use that will be dropped in upgrades faster than htc desire.
note 4 is not a worthy upgrade, so note 5 or maybe next curved LG if they finally do it right
As the owner of Samsung Galaxy Note 2 I will buy..... Note 3. No need to rush and buy Note 4 which will be very pricey. If we compare Note 3 with Note 4 we have the same battery, the same amount of RAM and internal storage. For those who are confused between Note 4 and Note Edge I would suggest Note 4.
I need to see more video on the note 4 and note edge to make a decision. I may just by the LG G3 and wait till next year note 5
I'm very curious about the note edge... but I'm kinda worried about the extra width of the device, the Note 3 is already pushing it for me being able to fit into my pocket... an extra 4mm of width might not work for me. I'm excited the note 4 is a bit less wide than the note 3, although a tiny bit thicker as that might be perfect for me.
I really like the idea of the edge though... I just wish it wasn't at the expense of form factor, heck I'd even compromise a slightly smaller main screen
the note 4 is 5.7 inches, and the note edge is 5.6, but you get some more pixels with the edge 2560x1600 vs 2560x1440.
I'd really like to see the devices side by side to really know if I'd want it.
If the note edge comes out later than the note 4, i probably won't be able to wait
I'm tempted to buy the Edge just so my iPhone co-workers can drool..but then again the Note 4 would be more practical for me. Oh and that metal frame is so so sexaaayy. Note 4 for me.

This resumed perfectly my feelings. The Note 4 does not seem worthy at all!! But the Note Edge as a "gimmick" might entertain me until the next best thing... I had a Note 2, then a Note 3 from Day 1 release, and I am sooo bored i need something new and innovative! I guess I will keep on waiting for the next AOSP device.
Note 4
Im really curious how the note edge performs in drop tests and scratches in the pocket without flip cover.
Also the notifications that are displayed in the edge works better for me because it wont interrupt me while im fighting in jungle heat and therefore ill not lose the battle.
Note 4 specs > note edge .. just for the specs I think I will go for the note 4 no matter how badly I want something different
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app
I have an Galaxy 3 and I am out of contract. Never had experience with Note series before! Would Note 4 be a good upgrade for me? I need 5.5" or above.
Of the two, the Note Edge has my greater interest. However, as a current HTC One owner, speaker quality is important and I don't believe either device step up to that mark.
Note 4 should have been called note 3s...not much innovation there.
Other than processor, camera and 64 GB int storage same thing.. Right down to the ugly leather look battery cover.
Same size screen and the device is wider and taller? Going backwards there.
Edge is much more interesting to me for sure.

What's the difference between Note 4 and Note Edge?
I thought the only difference is the Screen with edge feature. Is there anything else that makes Note 4 better than Note Edge?

Nor really better unless you want to play VR game.
The edge has that gimmick/innovation screen with a bit more pixel.
decision will be based on if I wanna show off or playing VR. [emoji8]
Note Edge uses plastic for the bezel according to videos online.
Edit: this may be rumor mongering...I saw MKBHDs video and he said metal also. Now im confused.

Also the Edge has a smaller 3,000mah battery.

I guess i won't be getting NOTE 5..

"SamMobi/e states that both the Galaxy Note
5 and the Galaxy 56 edge Plus will feature
glass backs, much like the Galaxy 56 and the
56 edge. The Note 5 is expected to feature
the Exynos 7422 Soc, an update to the
Exynos 7420 with an integrated Shannon LTE
modem manufactured by Samsung. The
Exynos 7422 will be Samsung's first all-in-one
Soc, incorporating the CPU, GPU, RAM,
storage(UFS 2.0) and the LTE modem in a
single package. Considering that the UFS 2.0
standard uses its own memory controller,
Samsung may not provide a microsD card
slot on the Note 5 or the 56 edge Plus as that
would involve figuring out a way to integrate
two memory controllers."

I was holding out fir a Note 5 but when the rumirs started about no storage or removable battery i picked up a Note 4
Agreed. I was all set on getting a Note 5 or waiting for a Note 6. Now i'll just have to wait for something comparable with an SD slot once i get tired of the Note 4. I really wish Samsung wasn't doing this. If i wanted an iPhone i would have simply bought an iPhone.

Agreed. It's off my list if there is no external memory and removable battery. I know quite a few people that jumped to iPhone instead of the S6 for the same reason. Shame. What once made the Galaxy stand apart is now no longer a selling point.
I'm surely buying one. But not going to be my favorite. I keep other phones for flash fun. Like s4. Nexus. Etc. I have no problems with buying with no battery removable or sd if it was all I had then yeah.

All of my phones have been Samsung for the last 5 years. It's probably healthier to see what else is out there anyway. It's possible there might be a silver lining to this.

Well i learned my lesson the hard way and will stay with samsung. I tried everything from the lg g3 and to the nexus 6 to the m8 to the g flex 2 . If you need everything to work right samsung delivers .g3 was a good phone too The other phones had deal breakers i couldn't settle with. I tried to avoid the note 4 thinking it was gonna be like the note 3 i had . Not even close. Only way i don't get a note 5 phone is Unless Huawei or sony release a flagship phone for sprint . Those the only 2 brands i haven't tried yet that's worth trying.
I have no problem with the lack of microSD slot or removable battery IF the battery can be replaced at a shop (or do it yourself). Batteries don't last forever. I had a battery in my S3 fail and start expanding just a few weeks ago.
Sprint usually requests a sd slot in its build orders, but those days may be over.....If this rumor does come true and the N5 lacks a sd slot and no removable battery I too will look to another brand, just wish Sony and Sprint could come to some deal.......
I definitely won't get it if it doesn't have an sd card. I'm perfectly content with the Note 4 for now. We'll see what other manufacturers come out with. No Sd, no money from me.
Waiting impatiently for my note 5. http://www.sammobile.com/2015/07/10/we-never-said-the-galaxy-note-5-wont-have-a-microsd-slot/
I just got the Note 4 about 2 months ago and truly love it, especially the camera. Note 5? Blah.
I like new phone's. Don't look back. No buyers remorse at all lol.
No removable sd isn't that big a deal to me. For saving backups and rom zips, USB otg works just fine. Get a model with a lot of storage. My nexus 7(2013) is a rom flashing beast and doesn't have either of these (removable sd/or battery).
I'd love to get a note 5, if it had removable storage, but I think I may hold off for Project Ara to release. Then no one can tell me what my phone has to have.

Note 5 Disappointment

Hardware specs
Samsung Exynos 7 octa-core processor
32GB/64GB storage options 4GB of RAM
3,000mAh battery (non-removable)
No microSD expansion slot
Wi-Fi: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
No usb-c
My only question is WHY?
Why smaller non-removable battery?
Why no microSD?
Why no usb-c?
Why not just keep my Note 4?

It shouldn't b since at blackhat, they announce the exploit used for ping-pong root on the Galaxy S6, so wouldn't suprised me if it's patched on 5.1.1 on the Note 5...
Tho I'm sure they will find another exploit and will have full root, not temp root like the Note 4 (due to the WP on different processors) tho I could b wrong

I've been on the note band wagon since the note2. But I'm out, Samsung let me down. Nothing compelling for a note 4 user to upgrade. To boot we never got root on the Verizon note 4. So low hopes for root on vz note 5. I think sales will be low on this phone. I'm not paying full price for this phone, I'll upgrade to something else.
thumbs down:
No removable battery
No SD card
No IR sensor ( I turn on my tv, cable box, and room air conditioner with my note4 - its great )
No Android M
IR Blaster is gone too. Man... I use my IR blaster daily for chromecast and TV. WTF Samsung?
This is a turning point for Samsung. I think sales will plunge as there is no compelling reason to buy these phones...SOS.
I've known for a while now that the Note4 DevEd would be my last Samsung. The Note5 looks disappointing to me as well. What makes anybody think the Note5 will get root if the Note4 didn't? I am wondering what the LG G4 Pro Note or whatever it's called is all about. It supposedly has 32-64 gigs internal, 3 gigs ram, sd slot, removable battery, and a pen. I'd love to be able to leave Samsung behind and still have a stylus!

If the N5 gets perm root then that would be the only compelling reason to give up my N4. I would still lament the loss of the ir blaster, removable battery and sd card.
Not if they have write protection like the Note 4!

I'm with you on this. The note 5 is a step backward, not forward. When my 4 reaches it's 'recycle to another family member' point, I'll either find the next logical successor-
...or just go back to a flip phone and carry around a handy tablet. There are always ways to get what we want.
If the note 5 gets root I'm definitely getting it. I still have my note 2. I didn't think the note 3 was enough of an upgrade and since the note 4 didn't get root I didn't want it, not even the developer edition, but if that is an option for the 5 I may go that route.
I don't care about the sd card since there is a 64GB version and possibly even a 128.
I don't care about the removable battery either. I can charge my phone almost any time I want and have no need to see how long it can last on a single charge, and in all of the years I've owned a smartphone I've only needed to replace a battery once.
If the Note 5 came in a 128 gb variant and was rootable I might honestly overlook all the other things they took away. But as of now there is no 128 gb option and it is not rootable to our knowledge, and since the Note 4 has never been rooted (on Verizon) I have very little reason to think that the Verizon Note 5 will be rootable. Because of this I will likely get the upcoming Moto X pure or LG G4 pro/note this fall. My Note 3 is fine for now, although almost 2 years old.
There will be no 128gb option for the Note 5 nor the GS6 plus.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 4 using Tapatalk
I don't see why it is set in stone that there will never be a 128gb option, but I also am not overly hopeful that there will. Still don't think it is impossible that Samsung ends up offering a 128gb N5 down the line. Unless there is some kind of hardware issue that truly makes it not possible.
If the LG G4 Pro turns out to be the next Nexus phone I will be on it like a bum on a baloney sandwich!

Should I upgrade, Note 2 to Note 4 - how is Android 6 on Note 4?

Hello,
Android 6 official / stock exists on Note 4 according to Sammobile Firmware section, does it work ok?
I have some important questions. (SORRY! <3<3♥)
Is the thumbscanner as good or kinda as good as the S6 one?
Does the thumbscanner work with Lastpass?
How many fingerprints can be registered on the thumbscanner, under Android 6 for Note 4?
Does the Note 4 have built in wireless charging mat, or do I need to buy another one, like my Note 2
How is the microphone on the Note 4 when used handsfree, mine is TERRIBLE on my Note 2.
Thanks
Anyone know of a comprehensive, Note 2 vs Note 4 guide?

Thanks for the reply, I did a bit of googling and the Note 4 scanner does sound a bit terrible, like a revision 1 hardware (same as the S5?)
The S6 works really well, as good as an iphone really.
I can't use a phone without a good thumb unlock anymore. Do you know if they at least added more than 3 fingers for the Note 4 under Android 6?
You can actually register up to 10 fingerprints on the Note 4's fingerprint scanner. I've been able to register 4 fingers on the fingerprint scanner.

When you are setting up the fingerprint scanner, you can actually register more than one fingerprint during the setup process. Which is how I managed to register both my thumbs and index fingers.
