So I got my S6 edge yesterday and I did set up the night clock.
I am not sure if any of you have noticed this but the Night clock lights up the whole display and not only the edge display pixels.
If you look at the phone in complete dark, you will see the complete screen has turned on and looks glowing but time is displayed only on the edge.
Am not sure why Samsung designed it like this as they could easily take advantage of AMOLED.
You're not the only one to report this, mine does not suffer this issue however, I wonder if the people that have the issue are all on the same update?
I believe the entire screen has to be lit to display even the smallest part of the screen.

Not on an AMOLED. The whole point of the display is that blacks are "true blacks," i.e. when a black is displayed the pixels are not lit up at all. On an LCD, yes, but not AMOLED. So the appeal of the night clock is that it can remain on and use almost no battery because so few pixels are being lit.
Used it for the first time last night and it was fine
Mine does that too, on Att black 32gb edge

As @SomeGuyDude answered, in AMOLED, it shouldnt be like this. While in IPS or any other technology, this is how it works.
BTW am on Canadian S6 Edge and S/W version is G925W8VLU1AOCG.
I'm thinking it's a software issue of some kind. I'm on a 64GB ATT model and as far as I can tell it isn't doing it, but it might be an imperceptible light-up that I haven't noticed yet.
I've seen this pointed out in a few reviews. I can't link anything (newbie rules) but check out the PCMag "Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (T-Mobile)" review - there is a picture of the Note Edge night clock beside 2 S6 Edge night clocks, and with the S6 Edge the screen is obviously backlit and much brighter. Here is what they say about it:
As you can see, the S6 Edge turns its backlight on, making it more of a nightlight than a sleeping clock. In a completely dark room, it's really noticeable, and really annoying.
64GB black model from Telus here. My night clock seems to work just fine. The rest of the screen is definitely not backlit.

did you check in full dark room as it is not visible during the daytime or with any sort of light on.
There's a thread about this in the Q+A forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/help/6-edge-night-clock-t3070026
Some people have the problem and some don't (one guy owned 2 phones, only one of them glowed).

Yep, I checked it last night when I was in bed. The rest of the screen is just as dark as it is when it's locked.
Mine does have the issue :/
It's draining battery too, lost 15% in 6 hours last night with night edge on
Strangely enough, info stream has a fully black screen... so it has to be a software issue. ..
try reset your phone..

People have done reset but it doesnt help.
I think that some people just cant tell if the screen is on displaying a very very dim black, plus the night clock.
I can tell, and my tmobile 64 gb doesnt turn off the screen while showing the night clock.
On my Nokia n9, and n8, when showing the clock or annimations, black pixel is totally of.
..so from a wide point view.. hardware problem.. Or is it not a amoled ..as I still waiting to get the phone I have no compare..

Hey! Good news, I've found how to fix the problem with nightclock! When launch, u can see the entire panel keep powered on... if it's the case 3 swipes on the clock and the hole display goes fully dark!
Let me know if this works for you too.
Edit... after 2 min the screen the clock relozd and the display return to half black mod... this prbably need a software update...

Hehe worked but same issue again after some time.
I actually have some pixels burned in at the top of the phone, kind of where the black bars would be if you play a video at original 16:9 format.
I haven't checked my navbar button are yet.
I'm dissappointed, I've had the Galaxy S4, S5, S6, and S7 and none of those displays got burn-ins for me.
Can you take a photo of it with another camera?
Hi everyone,
I would like to know if you have the same "problem ". I've received a galaxy s8 last Friday. Everything was great except one. I've a noticed a potential image retention. For example, the (black) navbar remained on the screen for 3-5 second after closing an app. Or the black bar on the top (when apps aren't full screen) was noticeable also after closing. So I went to a store to see their galaxy s8 and s8+ and test it. The results was clear, their galaxy s8 had the same "problem" but not the s8+. So I decided to change my phone and get a new. Surprise, same thing... then I went to another store and their s8 also had this potential issue but not their s8+. So I've seen 4 galaxy s8 having this problem. My question is simple. Am I the only one ? Will it get worse ? Is it normal ? I don't think that my store is going to change my phone again. Keep in mind that this "image retention" is more noticeable on a blue or gray picture. Thanks for your answers.
Wait i thought black pixels would be turned off when watching with black bars so that wouldnt cause a burn in or does it?

Correct, black is turned off, but with black background, light coloured icons are on, and quickly burn in compared to those around it.
But this seems ridiculously quick.
oled burn-in is actually caused by pixels being turned off, but shouldn't be visible this quickly.
it's caused by active pixels being "used up" quicker than inactive pixels.
but are you sure there's actual burn in?
the navigation and notification bars aren't completely transparent, they'll always show a faint black background that looks a bit like a shadow.
and on oled screens that completely disable "black" pixels often have a slight delay when switching between black and colored.
Yes and it's not that bad. I just know that I had this problem on my s6 edge after 6 months. So if I have it after one week with my s8, how will be the screen after 6 months ? I'm just worry about permanent burn in...

Either defective screens or s8 screen in general is a joke. My s7e doesn't have any visible burn-out(yep, that's how it's called in amoled screens, it's decaying light output of the individual pixels compared to the those around them) after 8m heavy use.
Did anyone see this? http://phandroid.com/2017/05/02/galaxy-s8-screen-burn-in-fix/

No, I don't have any kind of a problem with the display and I hope it will stay that way. I am just saying I never tried to search for it hense no visible burn-out. All I care is for a real usage problem, not forced search for it.
Hi @all
is it normal to have a perfectly white display when looking straight at it and to have a slight reddish veil while tilting it? And is it normal that Amoled Cinema and Amoled Photo Mode are a lot more reddish than adaptive mode?
I am on my third Galaxy S8 now. My first one had a perfect display, even when tilting it had the standard blueish color of the Amoled Displays. Had to send it back because of a hardware issue.
My second and third one have the above mentioned "problems".
How is it on your device? I'm already thinking of returning even this one... i want a perfect display for the price I am paying.
Thanks for your reply.

Yes I updated the phone to the latest firmware.
@Duskfall89 mine has that red veil issue as well but not enough to make me go nuts. I once had 1+1 and yellow band issue drove me nuts. Nevertheless, i think you can just set the red to the lowest on the RGB settings and it will go away. Im more worried about the battery haha

It's not an issue of being standard on oled displays. The blue tint is to produce a "vivid" look that catches the eye better.
Cinema and photo are suppose to have a warmer tint to match real life viewing. (because in real life, things have a warm tint) from the sun, and standard lighting.

So is it normal that cinema and photo mode are more "reddish" than standard adaptive mode? I never tried those modes on my old S7 so I don't have any comparison.
@Duskfall89 i know how you feel. i can also verify that mine has a red veil when switching from cinema/photo/adaptive. Regardless, i think i can live with it. After going through the forums, many s8s are plagued with this issue and i got mine on Monday mind you! Others have mentioned that they have swapped around 3-4 units with most experiencing similar redness. If you're not satisfied, there are also who have swapped till they got the least red display unit but that would also run the risk having other parts that come faulty.. alas, people are never satisfied. I once swapped 3 msoft surfaces.

Yes, it's a lottery I guess...
I think I will stick with it, it really doesn't bother me too much, it's more about the fact that i know how my first S8 looked.
Amazon won't replace it anymore because it's the third phone I'd send back and so they want to check their entire stock. They offered me a complete cashback if I return it but then I would be without a phone. I could give it back, take my cash and then buy another one (which is now much cheaper than the price I paid at launch) but I am tired of setting up phones now

Yessir. They use a warm base as opposed to a cool base. If you really want to learn more about it Google TV color calibration and it will go into detail about why they use a "cool" blue tint for floor and selling and how true natural colors are more "warm" reddish
Then I recommend calibrating your TV and after a day of adjusting, you'll never want to go back.
Also, blue filter in the Phone settings will add a warm tint at night to help your eyes
@Acoustichayes good info !!! i guess i wont be so worried! but i guess the only issues here is that my reddish areas are focused at the top of the display and is not uniform across.

I had the same case but cannot really consider it as an issue as sometimes, i cannot barely see it. It's just the way it is. Also, you might wanna check out wider color gamut. i think that we're just used to the "blueish" as it looks natural but samsung uses deep red this time.

I got used to it now and it really isn't an issue but I'd prefer the "blueish" tint as my first S8 had that. Sadly it had the home button bug so I returned it.

Ok then it's the same as mine I could be make it more white if I'd play around with the colors but even then, while tilting the reddish veil still remains. Less noticeable but it's still there. So I decided to leave it as it was out of the box. At leats my home button now seems to work properly :laugh:

Do you mean a ghost image? If so, it's a common problem of amoled displays. You must not being for a long period with the same image in the display. Do you know, for instance, that samsung as applied in the new S8 a almost invisible scheme to move time to time the virtual home buttons to avoid burn the display?
It's exactly that: a ghost image. It is the first time I notice that

Ok. It's common my friend, but most of people don't notice that bcause wallpapers are not bright enough or don't have regular colors etc. etc. For see the effect that AMOLED screen don't resist to much and burns easily, you can notice that in demo cellphones in retail stores. It's also the reason that sometimes they use videos instead static images...
There are a few apps in google store to fix that. What they do is being about 8 hours presenting strong colors to the screen alternately (I think for burning all the screen evenly). I tried some in my galaxy S5 but no results... Any case you can try...
The best thing to do since beginning to avoid the screen burn in is not abuse of screen brightness and do not use for a long time static images or images with strong sharp colors like the strong blue bar at top of Facebook...

we don't see that in his screenshots because screenshot is a digital pure image, not the image that he sees in HIS display. For us to see the ghost image in his display he must take a photo with another outside camera
If you want to notice that in your own phone try to have a regular white image in your phone above all screen area. Perhaps you can notice already at least the battery percentage, watch digits, or wifi or network scale in notification status bar place. Try it

Yes is a problem of all AMOLED screen phones, like plasma tv's - burn-in screen problem, you can search in internet. If your phone is a S8, is too new to be burned already. Also If you take those advises I said probably the problem take more time to appear. Any case I wrote any posts above too the Samsung trick with home virtual buttons to avoid or disguise the burn-in and ghost image of home buttons. It's one reason that I prefer physic buttons...

yes, more or less that you said. But first you must understand the technology. While LCD screens have a led light bulb that illuminate all screen and respective pixels (passive) and this ones not have own light, only take several colors, in amoled screen are the pixels who make the emission of light. This light of each pixel is too strong for it size. It's the reason why amoled screen is more detailed, vibrant colors, bright and with a infinite contrast. Now think, if you have a static image that is half white, half black it means that half pixels are turned on burning in the maximum while the other half ones are turned off spared. If this image are presented for a long time it means that half of pixels are already stressed while others are new in their maximum power of brightness. Now can you take easily your own conclusions why this happen and how can you try to avoid it? But it's only avoid a little bit, because in the end, there's no solution for it, unless you don't use the screen...

of course I can't secure to you how many minutes you must avoid to be on same screen! Simply try to avoid it as you can. For instance, I can tell you that my Samsung galaxy S5 suffered a display burn-in because I used S-view cover. The window area of the S-view case became dimmer (burnerer) because when it was close, only this area was illuminated at the maximum bright when notifications came like messages, mails or phone calls.
Also I became noticing that that area at the top of screen of notifications bar, wifi bar, network bar, battery and clock (that always is black) - in a regular color photo presentation that notification bar is not presented, that area was more brilliant because the pixels were most of time off, and also I could see the battery, wifi and clock ghost image. I became noticing that, after 6 months of purchased the cellphone...

As you can notice, the "always on" objects are moving time to time to avoid burn in of those pixels. The same for the home buttons in the galaxy S8. The black bar or tab in the top, or the blue bar in same area of facebook or other app's like some browsers, whatsapp etc. there's no chance to avoid the dimmer difference between the rest area and this one, also ghost numbers of clock, battery and so on. Of course as much of bright you have in scale, faster will be the burn-in effect and more you'll notice ghost images or tabs.
Me, to avoid that also, I installed a black theme background, not only to save battery ( in AMOLED screens white illumination screen area drain battery) as also to avoid white and strong color areas, cause these ones burn faster the pixels
Hello guys, suddenly I'm having display issues on my k20. I've attached a link to the video, when i pull down the notification bar, look how the blacks are loading a bit late. When i turn off dark mode, i see no issues like this, it's just the beautiful display again. Even i had same issues with my dark wallpaper. Please check, if you've same issues. I'm really concerned about it. Also, this maybe screen flickering but when i increased brightness, the issue didn't disappear, it was still persistent but at lower levels.

That's normal behavior for amoled displays.
1st: If this is the display problem, how can you expect we can see this on a screen capture??

Can't you see that voilet-ish colour instead of black when I'm swiftly moving the notification bar? It's clearly visible in video, you might want to check again.
Nope, watched it at least 5 times, on my PC and my 9T. Can't see anything peculiar.
I can not see anything wrong or violet at all. Am playing this on my computer at 1080 resolution and 0.25 playback speed and there is nothing to see.
If your screen is faulty, we are not able to see it on video you have shared with us of course
DAMN IT! Even i see nothing from my laptop
I think I'm having screen issues, only when its dark mode, else the screen is working absolutely fine!
I need to get to the service center ASAP! :crying:
Edit: Guys can you try doing the same and look if the issue is persistent in your screen too?! It would really be helpful for me.

It's normal for OLED panels, some are better, some worse. My phone has it too. No need to go to the service center.
I too have it brother. Dark mode has it normal mode doesn't. It can also be noticed if you open youtube and scroll back and forth quickly. The blacks seem to be spilling or streching. I saw that on your video and I don't know if it is normal or not but i too have that and wanted to ask someone about that.

People are claiming this to be normal, but after searching a lot i got to know these kind of issues come after 1-2years, not in a week or month. So I'm trying my best to replace my device or get the screen changed. I don't understand why Xiaomi is keeping the colours to pure blacks when they know their displays are facing smearing issues. I hope someone just changes that pure black colour to very dark grey colour, system widely. Some developer tested(on OP7 pro) the battery consumption difference with pure black and dark grey and it turned out that, dark grey consumes only 0.067% more power than dark inky blacks. I'm humbly requesting developers to change the colour, or at least have an option for the same.
My display when there is low light, the brightness is set to low and the image I see on the display is darkish I can see a vertical line at the left side of the display, is this normal or should I return It?
It's normal for Amoled screens (from first day of use). Just search for Amoled black smearing and you'll find a lot of videos and articles. S10 has it, iPhones have it too.

I have faint vertical lines on the right of the display when the brightness is low which is how I normally use it. I also have black smearing on pitch black to dark color transition. I think thats normal, it doesn't really bother me all that much.
The best way to reproduce this issue is turn off brightness to minimum and turn on reading mode to max. Then you'll see delay of displaying some colors (mostly gray)

My k20 has this issue and it's annoying that after paying for a flagship killer, we just got a cheap display which is not just low in quality but has these issue in dark mode which i think most of us use. Interestingly when i record this from screen recorder,it doesn't show up much but the same can be seen visually. So, this is definitely an issue that redmi is trying to let go.

As you "record from screen recorder" you do not record from the screen as you may like to think. You capture the video signal BEFORE it gets to the screen. So any imperfections caused by the amoled screen do not show up on a screen capture.
Anyway, this is a normal weakness with all amoled screens that I have seen.
It is soooo annoying when in dark mode at low brightness, I feel like I couldn't stand it anymore. The worst experience of display usage ever.
Maybe with DC dimming update that might happen someday, the issue won't be as intrusive and pronounce as it is right now. But whenn???
UPDATE:
So I found a workaround for this issue with an app. It's called Screen Balance. Basically it adds a filter overlay on your screen (ineffective on notification panel, because android restriction). Set it to either flourescent or flourescent (warm) at 15% strength minimum, and both brightness and contrast at 100%. You won't see perfect black anymore, but very close to that and no smearing effects visible unless you're really trying to.
I've bought Mi 9T Pro and have the same issue (also see it in your video). Did you fixed that?
