Bogs down daily, requires reboot - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Really scratching my head here. My V20 gets slower over time after about a day or less, it needs to be rebooted, it's basically unusable and sometimes it's so slow it cannot even be rebooted and have to do a battery pull. Of course I did a factory reset and Tmo even replaced it, but no luck. Any ideas?

Sometimes I notice a lag spike, where nothing will respond. I give it some time and it usually clears up. But I have no idea what causes it.

The only time I experience that is when I was downloading a couple of files using the browser Firefox

I just received this phone a few days ago and noticed this started happening. I've wiped and Factory resetted the device twice.
It can last at least half the day until it starts to slow down dramatically. I have no idea what is the cause.

This is firmware problem. Mine is in the box waiting some decent update.
It's ridiculous that LG release a phone with an alpha firmware. But not only LG, all the companies do this disgusting thing.
Really annoying.

It's only happened twice for me. But both times, I was downloading multiple files in the background. Maybe it's a app taking too much processing power away from the phone...

I constantly get a big lag exiting the dialer with the back button after a phone call. If I hit the home button it responds immediately.

Don't know if it's related. Mine was lagging and bogging down too. Bought a really fast micro sdxc card 128GB Extreme (90/60). Smooth and fast now.

I hate that it lags so bad after a call. I'll go to send a message by hitting the message button, and I sit and wait for it to catch up.

I had the same lag issues with mine. It was constantly freezing as well. I did notice when it was happening it was really warm. So I'm not sure if the added heat was causing it or not. When it was happening I checked memory use and nothing was eating it up other than the os. I got T-mo to replace it and so far no issue on my new one, fingers crossed.

The only time I get this is if I'm downloading multiple files in the browser or installing multiple apps from the Play Store. It clears up right after that though.

I pulled my sd card out and running it without, but still, molasses mode returned.

Mine is not as bad but I have to make sure to reboot first thing in the morning otherwise sometime during the day, it will slow down or just freeze and I need to do a battery pull. Which is a pain of you have a case. Or in the car using it to navigate.

Droid X lockup / freeze

My wife has a completely stock Droid X and she always has the weirdest issues with her phone with it locking up, freezing or hanging up..
Sometimes the phone recovers, other times it needs to be rebooted manually.
Is this a known issue with this phone?? I have the HTC incredible and have no issues like this.
I havent had a problem or heard of this. Is she under warranty and get it swapped out? If not has she tried to do a wipe/factory reset? While off hold the power and menu key at the same time. A screen will come up. press the search button. Use the volume keys to scroll up and down. Go to wipe/factory reset and press the camera button.
My wife has a stock D2, and it sometimes likes to open up the voice search, or she will be typing a text message, and the g key will open the browser to google.com, or just randomly freeze up..... Maybe women have a different body chemistry that acts like a mini EMP that just destroys all electronics.... Everything electronic she has ever owned has major problems, yet mine last years........
Droid X freezing - having to battery pull.
I've been having similar issues with my Droid X. It will randomly, and often, lock up for a while, then come back to life usually. It's really annoying if your browsing the web and all the sudden the phone freezes for 20-30 seconds.
When it freezes completely, it will just freeze and the screen will remain on. I have to then pull off my protective cover and battery pull to reboot.
Battery pulls happen about once every 2-3 days. Freezes that recover are happening 5 or 6 times a day if not more.
The brief time I had the phone on stock, the issue was occuring. I ignored it and figured surely this won't happen after I root it. I'm now running latest Liberty ROM and it's still happening. Problem definately gets worse if I overclock. I'm wondering if the CPU can't even handle 1000 Mhz and needs to be underclocked just so this thing can run stable.
I'm going to test that out and see if the weird freezing and force closes go away. But it will suck loosing speed.
I unfortunately can't return my phone as I bought it used on Craigslist.

Its likely due to the fact that the stock Droid x firmware sucks a load of ass. The factory blur is perhaps the biggest waste of time I've ever seen. I've had both my dinc and fascinate and x since launch day and the only remedy I've found to stop the x from doing this is flash livery. Only way to fix it at all.

Before reading all of this....note that this is just me providing a POTENTIAL explanation of why some people's phones seem to reboot more than others... this is not a generalization for all... It may not apply to you...
I think that random reboots (especially often) are related to potentially bad hardware, not being on the 2.3.34 OTA update...or user error (don't get mad, please let me explain this part!). I found that after moving off of 2.3.15 OTA that my phone was much more stable.
I notice from back when I first had my Droid X that I went crazy loading up lots of apps, and throwing widgets all over my home screens... I had custom themes flashed and lots of other stuff. While yes, blur does suck up more system resources than custom ROM's without it... you can run a phone with Blur without constant reboots.
The more apps that you have on the phone (even if not running) eat up resources. Along with that, the more widgets or notifications you have on your homescreens, the more resources that the phone is chewing through... With that said, you can SEEM to not be running anything on the phone, but the widgets in the background process' can be using up precious memory that cause the phone to lag or reboot.
Like I said at the beginning, if you don't have a lot of extra widgets and programs loaded, then yes, I would say that really sucks that your phone reboots. Moto's way of handling a resource issue (in most cases RAM)... is to reboot the phone to clear memory.
If you happen to have a lot loaded on your phone...try not to use a lot of widgets, and cut back on some un-needed apps... See if the phone reboots as often. Again, this is not me blaming anyone for their phone rebooting, simply my understanding of technology from personal experience.

I'm gettin random reboots / restarts...

Really weird, doesn't seem to happen when the tablet is stressed or something. On the other hand happened more often with heavy memory stuff like big pdf's and when i live youtube videos loading, maybe I have an issue with the 2 gig's of ram? it's there any way i can test that?
Sometimes the tablet isn't doing anything an restarts. Like when the home screen is blocked. Anyone else had this problems?

I would suggest you try flashing the nexus 10 factory restore image and see if that fixes things. If it's still randomly rebooting I'd send it in for a replacement.

Guys, I think found a pattern: Each time I get a reboot seems to be related to the wifi connection, like if the wifi freezes the tablet. Pay atention to the wifi settings when you get reboot / restart the tablet it's like searching the wifi connection like crazy, but, if you reboot normally the wifi it's already connected. Seems like a clue to me.
I played like 4 hours yesterday Chaos Rings. Seems like a really advanced game to me, so the stressing test is passed. It's not related to stress IMHO.
I've been getting random reboots too. Took several attempts to get all the way through setup right after taking it out of the box. At first I thought maybe I just hadn't given it enough time to acclimate to ambient temperature or something, but problem has persisted even after flashing the factory image via fastboot. Haven't noticed a correlation with wifi, but does seem to happen mostly when idle. Have also had a couple freezes and shutdowns, too.
Guess I'll be calling Google this morning... Argh.

I actually haven't had any reboots yet. I haven't stressed it with any games, but installed my normal apps and used it for web browsing/xda for a couple hours and no problems for me (yet...fingers crossed)
Called Google, and after being on hold for almost 1/2 hour (I'd imagine they're pretty swamped) explained the issue as well as what I've already done to try to resolve it (factory reset, fastboot recovery image flash) and they started the replacement process without any additional questions.
Just my luck, the first time in ages that I buy a device the day it comes out, I end up with a dud... Hopefully I get the replacement quickly!
I'm really nervous at this point. Mine is perfect aside from a piece of dust in the screen. Google is sending me a new one, but now I am afraid I will get one with more issues.
no more reboots here. But i think it's a software problem.
I have had two unexpected reboots. One was about halfway through ep. 1 of Planet Earth. I don't recall what I had running the other time.
I'm still running stock 4.2, unrooted.

My N10 Keeps freezing and resetting

It has happened several times caused by various apps such as chrome, play store, dolphin after downloading something. Screen freezes and system eventually resets on it's own. Is anyone else having this problem?
Build: JOP40C
Same here, restarted and frozen 3-4 times in couple of hours.
I was browsing, using apps, dowloading in background, loads of syncing etc - maybe taxing the system causes it? (But i though it should handle it a bit better...)
I had a couple of reboots but no freeze before the firmware update.
After the update it hasn't rebooted but it froze once

My keeps loosing Wi-Fi and completely shut down every time I turn it off and didn't turn back on in 5 seconds. Making things worse I have to wait several minutes until it allows me to turn it on by pressing power for a 5 seconds. In those few minutes it does not react on power button at all.
Factory reset did not help. Sadly it looks like I have no options other than return it back.
+1 reboots and freezing. Don't really want to return it since its finally rooted and cust recovery. Anyone think waiting for cust Roms will help?

Mine had been randomly restarting after installing some of my apps. I finally narrowed it down to HD Widgets and haven't had a reboot since uninstalling it.
I am not using HD Widgets and I get restarts periodically. What is the most efficient way to submit a bug report to google.

Just got an RMA for mine for the same issues u guys are experiencing. Wifi disconnecting and chrome freezing and rebooting. Looks like it may not be a hardware issue. Wonder if I should just keep it and wait for an update.
Edit - It was fine before the software update. Probably should ignore it once I get my replacement unit
I am also seeing the reboots happening every 3 to 4 hours like clockwork. I didn't have the device for more than a few minutes before the first update was pushed to it, so I can't say whether or not that was related. I do have HD Widgets installed, so I will pull it off and see if that helps slow the reboots down.
I'm using BootLog Uptime to keep track of the number and frequency of reboots. If this pattern holds, my money is on some kind of memory leak... just thinking from our own development experiences. Given how much higher the resolution is on the N10, I wouldn't count out some graphics heavy apps blowing through their heap much, much faster than on any previous Android device. We'll have to wait and see.
Just called Google and asked for replacement. I hope they aired new updates at the time my replacement arrived.
BTW, I had to initiated factory reset five or six times until it finally clears all data. Never saw Google product so buggy before.
That's a real bummer. Mine doesn't reset or display any of those problems. I have a tiny bit of light bleed in one corner at full brightness and the screen seems to have gotten a little more yellow over time... maybe just the glue drying. If any of you are brave and don't want to return right away, unlock the bootloader and reflash the stock image from google and see if that fixes things. It can help if there was some sort of corruption when you updated.
You may want to wait on that RMA. I had the same trouble with HD widgets installed.
No trouble at all since uninstalling...

I've never even touched hd widgets and have had two lock ups since I got it on Friday. Both occurred when task switching back to chrome and it was loading a previously viewed web page. Both times I was able to tap the power button to shut off the screen but couldn't wake it up. It eventually reset itself. It boots in like 5 seconds so it's not too terrible to wait for a software update, but I wonder what is causing it?
I think Chrome has some major bugs to be squashed when running on this device....mine has only crashed when browsing. That said, after uninstalling HD widgets, no crashes since...

I'd like to update my results. From last night, just like djflan, I removed HD Widgets and so far, 7 hours later, the crashes are gone. So I have my fingers crossed that I've found my culprit.
Also, I installed the HoloWeb browser and I have found it to be quite a bit quicker and more stable than Chrome. For those of you have issues with Chrome it is worth a few moments to track this app down (here on XDA) and give it a try.
Some of you may not have remembered or gone through the Android 3.x transition, but these kinds of issues were very prevalent during that update as well. Many developers simply don't or can't test on a wide enough range of devices and OS combinations to catch all the issues, or they rely heavily on assumptions or code that "always worked fine" in the past. I think we're seeing the same sorts of behaviors again with 4.2, so it will take a couple of months for it all to shake out.
For now I think I have a stable configuration on the Nexus 10 and I'm sticking with the device. No RMAs will solve issues that are software related in my case.
Removed hd widgets, no crashes yet.
I get the same random reboots and I've never used the fancy widget app. it has happened 3 times already. One I was browsing, another time deleting a widget and the last one when I tried to change the wallpaper. Everytime I had to hold the power button 5-6 seconds until it reboot

Anyone getting random restarts/reboots?

Since I got it, I have had about 5 random freezing and complete restarts. Once when YouTube was playing, the audio froze and produced a horrible buzzing sound then restarted.
I did a factory reset and it has happened twice since. I'm wondering if I have a faulty SD card...

That happens on my daughters Nexus 10 tablet, it definitely is YouTube and the high definition videos that cause that, it's unfortunate to hear that is happening on this phone.
No issues here or with YouTube. Yes i have sdcard.
yea! same here. i have random restarts!!! i thought it's just me. and I have SD card inserted.
this was me playing games... Fate/Grand Order in particular... i don't have sound on, so I don't know if what's happening...
the phone just goes black, and then the samsung boot logo starts.
I have no issues with g935t w/ sd card
my restart doesn't happen often, maybe like once every 2 day... and almost always playing games or was just playing games... i wonder what's wrong X_X
Only had one freeze and that was when it first booted and was restoring apps. I was uninstalling apps at the same time it was installing them and it froze for like 10 seconds. Other than that no issues.

No freezing so far. I've had my S7 Edge since Tuesday and I'm using my same SD card that was in my S5. I've watched YouTube several times as well as played several games ranging from Mobile Strike to GTA Vice City.
same here. I got my s7 edge on Wed eve. setup everything. No Issues then. next day morning on the way to work, it got restarted for the first time. While walking to Office, it restated couple of times. no specific pattern to it. If I try to do anything, it gets freeze and after few seconds, it restarts.
Couldn't check if it got restarted while at work. but again in the evening, I made a samsung Pay at a store and while driving back, it got restarted. Then at another store, it keeps on restarting after each reboot. Device gets hot as well. really hot.
Tried factory resetting, but immediately after I log back in, it restarted, at the same place.
I turned on Airplane mode and then device cooled off, and it ddnt restart after that. After 15 min or so, turned off Airplane mode, and device ddnt restart yet when Iam writing this now, almost 3 hours later.
Starnge thing is, it never gets restarted at home. it always happens when Iam outside. Something to do with the network? Im on ATT.
another issue, even for small tasks like browsing websites, device gets hot. Hot enough that you will notice.
Not good sammy. Iam a fan of you since 2011 and none of galaxy had issues atleast from day 1.
Iam gona wait a day more, if it still restarts, I dnt want them damn warranty/replacement. Iam gona get iPhone6. I dnt like ios, but atleast it wont die on me like this.
Woah!!! as iam writing this, it got restarted now. WTF! Guys pls stay away from s7 pls!
I had one really random reboot. Next the frone has issues with enabling fingerpring authentication in Play. It stops responding and anter about 15 seconds reboots.

intermittent serious UI-feedback lag

Most of the time, my Note 7 is instantly responsive no matter how heavily loaded it is.
Every few hours, though, it gets into a mode with serious UI-feedback lag. In this mode, when I tap any key or icon, the corresponding click-and-vibration feedback is delayed by up to one or two seconds. Often I can type several characters with no feedback, followed a second later by a rapid-fire sequence of the delayed clicks and vibrations.
When the phone is in lag mode, the lag occurs in all apps and with both keyboards I've tried (Samsung and Google). And it's not just during typing; tapping on any icon produces the same lag. Lag mode is not fixed by closing all apps, turning on Airplane mode, clearing the clipboard, switching to a different keyboard app, or clearing the keyboard cache or data. (Clearing the clipboard did seem to fix the problem on one occasion, but not subsequently.)
Rebooting the phone does fix the problem--until it comes back again a few hours later. I've tried booting into recovery and clearing the system cache, but the problem still comes back in a few hours. I have not had time to try a factory reset. But the phone is completely stock (APH1), no power-saving turned on, no debloating or esoteric settings or apps.
As I said above, most of the time the phone doesn't have this problem, no matter how many apps are running. And when the lag occurs, the phone is not hot and is not draining the battery. So it's not a matter of the phone being overloaded; rather, it's a specific bug in the UI feedback.
The problem arises at seemingly random times. I have not noticed any pattern as to what triggers it.
Here's a video demonstrating the problem, both for typing and for icon-tapping:
https://vid.me/iYya
And just for contrast, here's a video of the phone when it's working properly, with no UI-feedback delay:
https://vid.me/GF82
Again, when the phone is in lag-mode, it lags in all apps, for typing and for all icon-taps, etc. The videos show only one particular app for illustration.

I exactly have the same issue u clearly described above. My phone lags intermittently and no matter what I do, it doesn't go away. After some time, magically it comes back to normal.
Not sure how to fix this.. very frustrating!

Same thing for me as well. I've heard whispers it's an AT&T thing. Been trying to fix by turning off Battery Optimizer for certain apps and using package disabled. I've noticed it's most consistently caused by locking and unlocking again within a specific time window. Like if you're using the phone, then you put it to sleep, and come back within about 10 min, it does it's lag mode.
If anyone who's having this specific UI-lag problem tries a factory reset, please report whether or not the problem comes back after that.

After the factory reset, did you restore using backups (e.g., smart switch, directly transferring SD card) or did you set up as a new phone. I was having very bad lag. I used Smart Switch the first time. After a factory reset and rebuilding from scratch (without Smart Switch) my lag problem is gone. There is some discussion of this over at Android Central.

Thanks. That's disappointing but important to know, both diagnostically and also to save everyone else the effort of duplicating the attempt.
I'd be very curious to see if an unlocked (no AT&T bloat) N7 has the same issue on AT&T. If I get a N7, I'm hoping to wait until unlocked versions become available.
I have the same problem. It's the only thing I don't like about the phone. Hopefully they will update it soon.
All samsung phones has that. A new custom rom will fix it.
Same problem, sprint... Stock, TouchWiz. Switched to nova and it doesn't seem to have helped much.
I'm finding the problem may be gone. It hasn't shown up in the last 48 hours (compared to several times a day up until then).
There's nothing I'm aware of doing differently now, other than having turned off Report Diagnostic Info in Settings|General Management. I'm skeptical that that has anything to do with the reversal (but not quite skeptical enough to try turning it back on just yet).
Perhaps the improvement is due to an app update, or perhaps it's a delayed effect of clearing the system cache (though the problem did crop up once or twice after the cache-clearing, before it stopped occurring). Has anyone else seen the problem go away?
UPDATE: The feedback-lag returned after about 60 hours. Again, no obvious trigger. Very annoying.
Hi guys,
I am having similar issues. Most of the times the UI is pretty smooth, but intermittently it starts lagging, opening apps takes 1-2 secs and scrolling the pages isnt smooth, its very annoying esp considering the device is barely few days old. Need some fix to this, or its a dead investment!

Wait, are you talking about the same feedback problem that this thread is about? Taking a second to load an app isn't necessarily unreasonable. But a one-second lag for haptic feedback defeats the whole purpose of the feedback and is clearly a bug.

What i mean is that the lag isnt just restricted to feedback, the phone seems to stutter overall, scrolling on pages and apps is jittery. And this is noticeable since when it doesn't occur the phone is buttery smooth! I tried the google now launcher and it still persists. Turning the animations to 0.5x didnt help either.
Oh ok. Yeah, I'm using the Google Now launcher too. For me, the lag problem disappeared about 58 hours ago though. Just out of curiosity, do you have Report Diagnostic Info enabled in Settings|General Management?
UPDATE: The lag came back after about 60 hours.
Just for completeness, I should mention that after the phone went into lag mode, I also tried turning haptic/audio feedback off and then back on. But the lag did not stop.
