Anyone want a YouTube ROM series for the G4 Play? - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

Back when I had the HTC T-Mobile G2/Desire Z I did a youtube rom showcase kind of thing, if you want to see what it would be like I have a link to the thread here on XDA in my signature. Of course since it was a few years ago I now have better equipment in the works for better videos. I know there are only 2 roms out right now, CM 13 and CM 14.1, however since the phone is still relatively new I have a feeling development might pick up in the next few months. Would anyone be interested in seeing something like that? I've always liked putting out videos that you don't really see, as I know it can be mildly frustrating sometimes while looking for something.
-Edit-
First video is in progress with writing and all that stuff. No ETA just yet, as I have some college stuff to finish up the next few days. I'll open a dedicated thread once the first video is uploaded

id watch it just like a "try before i buy" type thing

I would like to see how the phone lives rooted/with cm on board, etc, before trying myself. As a noob, don't wanna mess up my new phone. However, want get rid of google bloatware (yeah, i'm among the paranoid cavemen, who doesn't trust google now, etc)

Hey I get you on that one. I have CM13 installed, no GAPPS installed whatsoever and I'm using MicroG, F-Droid, and some third party APK sites instead. Takes a bit to get MicroG set up but honestly, I don't miss Google whatsoever other than the seamless contact and calendar sync.
Plus the battery life is insane without Gapps. Only charged up 10-15% once in two days.

I haven't had any problems with it personally. Took me a good 30 minutes to get it fully set up, but it was my first time attempting to go 100% google free for a change and dealing with it.

I flashed CM 13, and only that. MicroG, correct me anyone if I am wrong as I just recently rediscovered it, is essentially a replacement for Google Play Services and a few other things, allowing push notifications for apps such as FB Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, etc. If you want to check out the thread here on XDA, here it is

Head over to the thread here. To my knowledge it works best on any non-stock rom. I don't think/know if it can be used on a stock rom

I got about 7+ hours of screen on time over 2 days, and only had to charge it up 10% or so once. Ended the day with about 35-40% battery left. It should work for any custom rom where you are required to also flash the google apps. I personally didn't run into any installation problems with it

Considering trying microG (no GApps)?

I generally hate these types of threads, but I'm looking for a specific bit of information and a ROM recommendation.
Which ROMs offer the most compete and fullest experience without GApps? I'm seriously considering doing an install with no GApps, and seeing if I can get by with just microG. I'd like the ROM I go with then to come with a nice, full-featured and up-to-date suite of open source apps built in, without feeling like I'm using a bunch of old apps from AOSP that haven't been updated since Holo.
I'm guessing LineageOS and OmniROM are the top choices, but do most microG users prefer one over the other?

I'd use Chads uber. That rom is more powerful than any other rom and comes with gapps and not many apps. Also you can just use titanium backup to freeze apps

Depends what you need from the google apps. Some work with microg some not.
I only keep google apps because of Google Photos which doesn't fully work under microg.
I've found open source alternatives for all other apps that I use, sometimes working even better.
Yeah would be nice 2 go googleless.

Interesting. This is the first I've heard of MicroG. I've been reducing my Google footproot for about 6 months now. I have been running with all of my google activity paused for several months. It's actually a pain in the a$$, when I need to use maps, and no data from my locations or area is there, but that's also a good thing, and why I do it. Maps is probably the biggest hassle. If I were smarter, I'd just get another navigation app that I trust more than the Mothership, ha ha.
So, their site says that their version of the playstore doesn't work? So you can't download aps from it? Why do they offer it, is it needed for certain apps maybe? I could live with apk mirror if I needed to. It would just be much more inconvenient.
What's the reason for you guys to reduce the google stuff then?

There are probably a handful of reasons, but I'll give you my top 2.
First, I am generally trying to avoid closed source software, where the software's inner workings are hidden from the users. If it's going to run on my hardware, and I'm going to trust it with my personal information, I'd prefer that the developer(s) to be transparent enough to let us know what their software is doing on my systems, and with my information. Most all of Google's core apps are now closed source.
Second, I don't like Google's logging policy. They retain as much data as they can, and I think that should give any thoughtful user reason for concern. Google may or may not be doing malicious things with the data they are retaining now, but even if I'm trusting them with my traffic today, knowingly participating while they log activity requires that I also trust that Google will continue to be benevolent with that data in 10, 20, and 30 years into the future, since that data is likely not being lost (particularly as data storage continues to get cheaper and cheaper). Not only that, using their services also requires placing confidence in them that their databases will not be breached at any point in the future, with leaked data falling into malicious hands. To me, it seems to be a virtual certainty that the data integrity will be breached at some point, it's just a matter of time.
Therefore, it seems like an unnecessary risk to take when and where there are good alternatives to Google products and services. Some risks are worth it. Others are not. Let each man judge for himself.

OsmAnd is the open source navigation app many people use.
Similarly, F-Droid is an open source app store.

Thanks for stating your point. I can get in to that.
Always nice to hear peoples reasons for doing things the way they do. Interresting.
I'll study this some more.
I tried to de-google the other night, but couldn't get everything implemented properly. I could use titanium backup pro, but I couldn't get Ex Kernel Manager to work (it needed to check it's license), and other apps like Google play music etc.
I think I need signature spoofing. Is that only availab if it's built into the ROM, or can I add that functionality on my own?

Has anyone tried the /e/OS?

Not sure if I should post here or the custom ROM page ( I figured that was more a development/issue forum ).
Anyway, today I see that /e/ has a release for the 6T. If I am reading it correctly it is basically LineageOS with microG......give or take, with it's own app store. Seems to me it would be more convenient to install 1 ready made pkg than intalling Lineage then installing micro G.
Has anyone installed it and what are your thoughts?
I am currently on the fence. I have rooted my phone and with Titanium and App Ops put Google, and most of the apps on a short leash. I love the way my phone is set up now EXCEPT google still lives inside it( without my google account info ).
Thanks for your thoughts!

ok, sounds like a pissy developer, but.......
ok, they haven't done anything new......except bundle it with micro G....kinda my goal. Not sure I will like their UI, but the lineage launcher is easy enough to reinstall.
3rd party apps.....absolutely no proof what so ever about the malware claim......rooted with Titanium can remove all the apps before the phone ever connects to the internet.
they haven't removed all the google stuff.........ONE, count it ONE, line of code using 8.8.8.8 as a fall back, not primary dns......I use a vpn all the time.
they steal code.....pretty much
they don't like negative feedback........no way, a prima dona developer?? Noooooooooooooooooo
Taking all of that in stride, Lineage plus micro G has not released an official version. What are my options with micro G? I thought by now there would be an official build since Lineage OS release their officail 6t build a few weeks back. I did look at your OS link, but not much info there.
Thanks! JC
Yes. They steal code, they make profit, and most importantly don't do anything new. Oh, also, google is still spying on you with /e/

ok, so what rom with micro g, no Gapps do you suggest?
The only google spying the other guy mentions is 1 line of code where google dns is the fall back dns. I use a vpn so that is a non issue.
The micro g guys have not realeased an official Lineage w Micro G, /e/ has. I can't seem to find anything with micro G for a 6T.

I understand this rom is for privacy but I can't use anything and many apps crash constantly after installed them.
I used it for a night, I believe be enough.
Maybe in future there will be a lot of things useful but at the moment.... No no and no
Thanks

Thank you for some real world input! Looks like I am going to stay with OOS. I downloaded the Pixel 3 camera apk today, the OxyTweaker Magisk module the other day, and, with Titatanium and App ops I have google on as short of a leash as I can with a factory ROM. I really like the way my phone is set up now. My battery is f**king AMAZING now and I have the best camera on the market. Until I am ready to 100% get rid of google I guess I will stay where I am.
Thanks again for actually replying to the question posed!

Googless ROM

Ive tried searching, but cannot find if there is a ROM for the S5 that blocks all google back ground services from reporting on you, whatever info it may be. Ive seen the rumor of the company selling their refurb phones with a custom ROM on it, but at ludicrous prices, and cant even find them at all. Im going to be getting an S5 from a friend soon and want to start stripping it of the fluff and google services if at all possible.
I don't know of any custom ROMs that include Google services by default. Just don't install GApps.
OK, thanks.

Pardon the stupid questions, im a Windows user and having to investigate the possibility of being forced to move if they dont fix Cortana's voice command (she only does searches when you give her a command) and Interests have been turned off for a while with no warning or reason, but there is a message on a 8.1 phone as to why.
Anywho, how do you load apps if you dont have Gapps/google services? Can you side load them, but where do you get up to date ones if not from the Play store? Is it worth using a free S5 or plunking for a One Plus 6T or 7 or Nokia 8?

[NEWS] LineageOS 17.1 adds support for Pixel 3a

XDA posted late last week that LineageOS 17.1 will be adding official builds for the Google Pixel 3a (Link Here).
So far there have been no builds posted, but they should be here soon
Edit 2020-09-08: There is now a live build on the download page.
Both cdesai and npjohnson deserve a big thank-you for stepping up as maintainers!
Nice.
Is it possible to dirty-flash over the unofficial builds (posted recently in telegram)?
No, scratch that, better question: Where's the active-edge support?

I was wondering the same; I've been using the invisiblek build but it hasn't been updated since April.
I should probably back up before I try a dirty flash just in case; can anybody recommend a good backup solution that works without root? The most important thing is my 2FA data.
I flashed it yesterday and ran it all day today. So far it seems to be working just fine. I'm really going to miss having Google Pay at lunch the next time I forget my wallet at home. If there isn't a work-around anymore, I'll probably use the low-tech solution and stash a 20 dollar bill inside my phone case.
I came from stock (rooted), so I can't answer for any of the dirty-flashing questions.

How is battery life and the camera compared to stock ROM ?
I'm looking for an alternative to the stock rom because i find it to be a little bit bloated with some google services that i don't need.
Are the installation instructions on the lineageOS website correct ? Does the google camera app work with this rom?
Thank's in advance for your response

Battery life might be slightly worse, but any time I load a new rom I'm picking up my phone more than usual so it could be that.
Instructions from the Lineage page are correct. I went with Open gapps pico and installed everything else from play store. Had a slight issue going through the wizard because it thought my WiFi wasn't working but I was able to skip and set up manually.
Google camera from play store is working and seems to open at least twice as fast as it did on the stock rom.

Call screen is stuck saying "Activating Call Screen (requires WiFi)" but my banks and credit card apps work fine.
Nice!
Did anyone test the e-sim functionality?
Google maps would not use location data. In order for location to work in Google Maps, I had to open it twice, doing an app close after the first open. Drove me nuts.

Request - Play Store - How to? - Gifting some tablets :) -- They are using LineageOS

Good afternoon,
I have some rooted HD 8's and HD 10's *Both using Lineage OS.
Is there a pretty decent guide on exactly what to download to get play store working?
I have some tablets I'd like to give to my parents after working this out.
Thank you in advance.
Its a late Mothers day gift and recent Fathers day gift.
@likwidchz I have strong doubts that playstore (Gapps) is working on anything else then on android.
I've flashed Ubuntu on a Fairphone and Playstore didn't work there.
So imho you gotta flash LineageOS to use it.

So imho you gotta flash LineageOS to use it.

I see.
Which LOS?
Tried any Gapps yet?
I think that might be the issue. I don't know what to install.
on the HD8's I have
lineage-15.1-20220102-UNOFFICIAL-giza.zip
On the HD10's I have
lineage-16.0-20220506-UNOFFICIAL-suez.zip
If there is a later OS for either of those tablets please let me know and ill upgrade that.
What do I flash?? is that what OpenGapps is?

As I don't have your device you gotta check first if it's 32 or 64bit.
Then choose the appropriate file from here.
I usually take pico.
Thank you, after going back and forth a tad with it, I realized just that. I'll use pico as I think thats the only thing they will need.
Thank you again!

Allow me to lead your attention to the app Netguard-no-root by @M66B.
As I understood you want to give the tabs to your parents.
With that app you're able to block internet access for each app (even system apps) separately and these apps don't even notice that.
I've bought protocolling (useful for beginners when setting up) but it works free as well.
All games I use are blocked and half of the other apps as well.
I kind of realize now either one of two things.
The lineage OS latest june release uses lots of battery when powered off and just sitting.
or these tablets battery life I bought on ebay is just old.
How long should these things be able to sit on a desk and be off?

Imo there is no general answer to that.
I experienced that even the same LOS number behaves not the same on different devices. I think that the kernel chosen by the dev is the culprit.
As an example: one tablet on LOS18.1 can be off for days consuming nothing while one phone on same LOS uses around 10%/d even when off as well.
okay well crap, I guess thinking out loud, I wonder if it makes sense to put the stock amazon distro on it if there is one available to flash with twrp. That might be a bit less weird for them.
I just know if the battery dies, phone calls will be happening lol.
