As its taking our community a lot of time to build 4.4 if it ever becomes possible i thought it would be a good idea to start a thread of ideas and any new information for other developments on the xoom.
The idea of this thread is to look to alternative sources of development for the Xoom!
This is what I have seen so far in terms of Ideas from sources other than Android:
IDEAS:
Chromium OS for Tegra (port using tegra 2 drivers)
Kernel based on tegra 2 Open Source Driver Project
Ubuntu Touch (half working port somewhere)
I have a feeling the open source driver could help with the Kernel for KitKat. ive been doing a lot of reading on kernels so i hope to do lots of experimenting =]
CONTRIBUTE HERE ANY IDEAS OR KNOWLEDGE I WILL ADD IT TO THE POST!
Files found for people to mess around with
FOUND NVIDIA TEGRA 2 AND 3 DRIVERS... i dont know if this is the source havnt had the chance to look but heres a zip (SOURCE: Linux for Tegra r16.3)
cousins
Devices that belong to our Xoom Family
Maybe some of the Xooms cousins which share the Nvidia Tegra 2 Gene can help us out !
(image wont upload so heres a link to Tegra Wiki)
XOOM TEGRA SPECS:
Tegra 250 AP20H (Ventana)... 300Mhz GPU.. the Tegra T20 (Harmony) has 333Mhz and appears to be the only difference... theres also the Tegra 3D Ap25 and T25 which have 1.2Ghz CPU's and 400Mhz GPU's
INCLUDES:
Motorola Atrix 4G
Moto Droid X2 (4.4 dev - i dont think its been successful yet)
Moto Photon (? never heard of this!)
and other brands
WIll be watching the Moto sources carefully then have a look at other manufacturers! (a good 15.. another 25 on the othe version of Tegra 2)
It would be awesome to have a Ubuntu touch port that could be used as a daily driver

Yeah it would be nice, im looking at chromeOs for arm though if i could get a build working apparently Hexxeh got it ported to the nexus 7 which i believe uses tegra 4?
the main thing im looking at is porting things over from other Nvidia Tegra 2 based projects so anyone with any information on other devices with Tegra 2 give me a shout... any open source work may spark some ideas! =]
Trimslice
Well, this is a Fedora proyect, the CompuLab's Trimslice is a Tegra 2 device. I hope it helps you out in some way.

You're very welcome. Good luck.

dasselflech posted this possible kernel source as well.

The phone appears to have the same SoC.
..
I'm willing to help test with my Xoom. Just picked up a Samsung Note 10.1 specifically so that I would be able to start tinkering with my Xoom. I may not be able to help develop, but I am somewhat comfortable with Linux and with flashing ROMs, etc.
Hi everyone,
I have a redmi note 2 prime, buyed 4 months ago.
I like it much, except for the camera and the community development: they ported the cm 12 and other cool things, but I come from a nexus 5 and I miss it a lot from this point of view. I know the nexus is the most modded phone, but from a phone which sold that much (redmi note 2) I was expecting more development (I know that the kernel source is needed for this...). Also helio x10 was a bit disappointing: good battery, but it's slower of the sd800 (I compared both) of my old nexus 5 and it gets hot when playing.
That said, I saw the new redmi note (redmi note 3 pro) and now I want to buy that.
I would sell my redmi note 2 prime (let's say for 130-40€) and buy the redmi 3 pro for 210€
So for 70-80€ this would be the main improvements:
Helio x10 -> snapdragon 650 (from 45000 to over 70000 on antutu)
2gb ram -> 3gb RAM
13mpx rear camera -> 16mpx (hopefully does better)
Single flash led -> dual tone
3000mah battery -> 4000mah
No fingerprint sensor -> fingerprint (I really like it)
Plastic body -> metal
Now the questions:
Very important to me, will this phone be more easy to development (because of snapdragon instead of mediatek) and will it actually have more development? (Will the kernel source be public as for other xiaomi snapdragon devices?)
For you, is it worth to upgrade from rn2 prime to rn3 pro for 70-80€?
It has passed one week since the launch of rn3 pro and still there is no reviews (not a single one). Why?
Other thoughts about it are welcome.
Thank you.
Yes, buy it. It has no sd card support which sucks but rom development is more feasible.
There is sd card support!!u can put one sim and sd card at the same time!!

i think the most interesting in reno 3 pro for me are volte and global band support (including cdma2000). i would like to switch to this phone which volte is widely adopted in my country.
whether or not mod exist depends on ..
1. the sales volume and most important 2. source code availability. xiaomi will never opensource as you wish.

1. Sales volume is very hard to predict. Maybe tomorrow they announce the redmi note 4 and nobody buys the redmi note 3 pro anymore.
2. This is what I want to fully understand. I know that xiaomi doesn't release the kernel source, but I also heard that snapdragon socs have public code which help developing ROMs (I am a noob about this, so I'm not sure what I'm talking about).
For example, redmi note 2 kernel source is not public, but other devices with snapdragon socs have more roms and development (for example mi4iand others). The mi4 has even an official CyanogenMod and windows 10.
(3) Bootloader? I know that xiaomi blocks the bootloader of their devices now. If I order the rn3 pro from China, will I get a Chinese ROM or international? (I would love in Italian, but English is good too). Anyway I would request the code to unlock it after a few days/weeks.

There are the kernel sources of other dmartphones wirh helio x10, but we miss the sources of device-specific drivers. So if xiaomi doesn't release the source it will be hard too.
For the bootloader/language question.
You will get the phone with locked bootloader and with the chinese-english rom. The global rom may be release, but it's not confirmed.

Maybe they'll release the driver sources for the 3 Pro as it's being sold in India. Don't know if it has the same hardware, though. Screen, sensors, etc might be different from the RN 2 and 3 in the 3 pro.

Currently using Redmi Note 2 Prime, but with the release of Redmi Note 3 Pro i'm also considering change my phone
I'm also an owner of a RN2 Prime and considering an upgrade to the RN3 Pro. But not immediately, about 6 months from now. This should be plenty of time for these 3 things to happen:
1. The RN3 Pro's price to drop to a stable point
2. Reliable user feedback to be available online
3. Custom development activity to (hopefully) start
I'm going to China in March (10 days, from the 2nd)... If I manage to get one (or two for my friend) redmi not 3 pro 3/32gb for the original chinese price (about 180€), I will definitely buy that. I saw from reviews a big improvement in camera performance, cpu performance, battery performance. And the lovely metal body with fingerprint sensor... I saw photo/video/gaming samples and review here: http://gizchina.it/2016/01/xiaomi-redmi-note-3-pro-la-recensione-di-gizchina-it/ (it's in italian) and I want it so much. Still, I'm scared about the amount of development that the device is going to have.

loving it for the most part. volume rocker and power feel a little wobbly, and I get some random MIUI FC's, and it FC's every time I open the screen battery statistics. Anybody else getting this issue?
Hey, I got this device 5 days ago. Bought for e-book reading, but was better than I thought.

I get that FC too. Settings -> Battery -> Battery Use -> Screen, and it's over.
Side buttons are made of plastic and it's littly wobby - that's regular in middle ranged xiaomi phones anyway.
Anyway, good device. And I'm waiting for a RR Rom to flash.

Any developers declared a rom for us to flash yet? Miui is so annoyingly ugly.

no ROM yet besides china stable and developer. TWRP just appeared on the MIUI forums today though. sadly no touchscreen support as far as I can tell.
Try flashing one of the modified MIUI roms from one of the below:

Multirom

I guess we all have to wait. A lineage package would be awesome.

Well, the nvidia and intel chipsets in former mipads have been surely resurrected, and mediatek chipsets are also popular(at least in china) and enjoy a great many optimized roms maintained by xda developers. No matter how long it takes I will be waiting.

Allow me to put the nail in the coffin here. Intel Atom chips have only received love from KonstaT - his work on Cube Iwork8 Ultimate/Air + Chuwi tablets sporting the Atom chips e.g. - he is the main reason anything gets done for the Mi Pad 2 (check the credits )
The Nvidia chip is found in ... Shield Tablet which is still being supported and in other devices - still receiving love.
Quick search on the MT8176 chip. Couldn't find anything. And I know for a fact that KonstaT doesn't mess with MediaTek chips.
Obviously, I hope the best for the Mi Pad 3 owners, but it doesn't look too good right now. Mind you, I did suggest that you try flashing the Xiaomi.eu and/or Multirom.me's Mi Pad 3 MIUI rom. They both optimize the rom, so give it a go and tell us which is better.
Lastly, Chris from TechTablets isn't impressed and suggests the Mi Pad 2 and Ifive Mini 4S over the Mi Pad 3.

Hi, although I'm not expecting much development (if any) for this tablet and I know it won't be a hit in sales, I find it most interesting. Those specs are just fine for my needs.
Plus, Xiaomi has proven a brand with very high quality products and which you can trust (I've had a couple of phones, the 12.5" laptop and some other stuff from them and I love them).
So I couldn't resist and I have just ordered one. As long as there is Miui and it gets a couple of update, it's fine for me.
Anyway if any developer is motivated for some cooked roms, I'm sure a few of us will appreciate!

MAC address changes after wakeup from Wifi standby
I just received my MiPad 3 this weekend - a nice first impression regarding appearance and haptics,
BUT, I recognized that every time the Wifi wakes up from standby again, the MiPad comes up with a different MAC address! Not after reboot (observed on different MediaTek devices, e.g. Cubot X9), but on any Wifi reconnect after standby it reconnects with strange MAC addresses beginning with 00:00:00:aa:bb:cc - while in the "about the Phone" still the original MAC address is stated.
It seemes that this behaviour had been an issue for the MiPad 2 as well:

VERY disappointing at all!
Waiting for Wifi issue
I just got my Mi Pad 3 and it is installed with the China ROM 8.2.8.0(NCICNEB). I installed play store into it and it was working fine until play store got updated. Now it prompt need to update Play store and indicate waiting for Wifi. Anyone know how to solve this?

Ask at the xiaomi.eu forum or try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whenair.language&hl=en.
I don't own a Mi Pad 3 and never will. I have flashed xiaomi.eu roms before on two devices - all worked great.

I tried to register as a user at xiaomi.eu and kept getting an error message that my attempt to register was rejected because it "resembled automated or spam-like behavior. Please contact the administrator for further information or assistance." I tried 8 or 9 times before giving up. At any rate, I did download TWRP for the Mi Pad 3 and installed it. I then flashed the custom "weekly" room from 5-26 and all is good. It sort of took care of the region issue as settings no longer shows China.
Would really like to contribute at that site, but if it's that difficult to register - forget it. But thanks for the link. ?
I am in a conundrum. I am preparing to purchase another Android device, but I cannot decide on which device is better suited for me. I prefer an Android device that has more than ample support in XDA development, while also still having good support from the OEM.
Between the Google Pixel (1st Generation) and Xiaomi Mi A1, which device has better development support?
Pixel obviously ?, better build quality and specs than mi a1. but if you are on budget get mi a1 or wait for mi a2.

If you have the money, the pixel seems the logical choice. The only downsize is the screen size 5" vs 5.5"
Pixel is released in October 2016, so is still supported by the OEM (Big G) at least until October 2018.
However, only you can decide which phone suits you best
Mi a1 is a good mid-range phone. But pixel was a flagship when released.

If you wanna stick to stock ROM then pixel .. If you want to flash custom ROMs and kernel , I think mi a1's development in this case is good and it's development is growing pretty darn fast .. Hello Mi fans,
Xiaomi is very concerned about the issue of upgrading Android O that everyone cares about at present. The MIUI developers have already sent R&D staff to the relevant adaptation team and they hope to help you solve the problems encountered at an early date.
The latest developments (7.18 update):
1. After nearly two weeks of efforts Mi 5s was able to upgrade Android O's ultrasonic fingerprint technology to find a feasible solution. At present Xiaomi R&D team cooperates with Qualcomm R&D experts to start intense development and adaptation work. During this period more underlying code changes are involved. To ensure stability related work may last for a period of time. The estimated upgrade time is November. MIUI developers are doing their utmost to complete this adaptation work as soon as possible.
2. After active communication, the technical difficulties of the Mi 5s Plus model dual camera module have found a feasible solution. The Xiaomi R&D team and the Qualcomm dual camera module teams are working overtime. Since the underlying code part needs more adjustments. It is expected that the upgrade time will be in early October and MIUI developers will speed up the progress to complete the adaptation work as soon as possible!
MIUI developers also understand the eagerness of everyone to upgrade Android O. Because the ultrasonic fingerprint module and the dual camera module are supported by Qualcomm. They actively researched the solution together with Qualcomm as originally planned. At present there are some progress but there is no final conclusion. After a clear conclusion, developers will announce the public in the forum for the first time.
There have been rumors that the Mi 5s/Mi 5s Plus is an ODM model recently! These two mobile phones are Mi self-developed models and they are not ODM models as well as will not allow other manufacturers to adapt.
