Pixel XL 128GB : Random freezing/reboot issue - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey Everyone,
This thread is only meant for people with the Pixel XL 128 GB. It has been observed many people are facing random freezes/reboots with device. The culprit could be the storage that has been provided with your phone. This thread is not providing any solution for the problem(sorry about that), however, it would be great if you can mention the Storage Manufacturer of your phone here, just so that a pattern could be recognized. Mine was Toshiba 128GB.
To check the storage manufacturer, please go to the bootloader(fastboot) mode. It is mentioned on that screen.
For more details please go to my original thread regarding my Pixel XL 128GB.

This is only meant for Pixel XL 128GB (unless the others are also facing the issue) for people facing random freeze/reboot issues. Thanks.

I just had a complete freeze up and random reboot in my pixel xl 32gb yesterday, so i dont think it has anything to do with just the 128gb. My bootloader is locked and I am not rooted or ROM'ed. I never happened before 7.1.1 so maybe its a software issue.

Oh wow! Who is storage manufacturer? I was hoping to find a pattern with this issue. Many other's have complained about the same.

samsung on ufs and ram

128gb Toshiba
RAM is Hynix (I swear that's what it said)
Google Play Store Edition (US model)
Verizon Sim
I am not using all the 128gb 32gb wasn't enough 64 would have been perfect but they didn't make one.
I haven't had any freezing gear or lock ups.

Maybe try filling up the storage. Around 50 GB mark. I hope the phone behaves.:fingers-crossed:

I wondered about that myself, if it is a bad memory chip then it may not work until I have more shoved in there. Maybe tonight I will move some large files to the phone just to see what happens.

Interesting.
Hynix is/was *huge* in Enterprise level server ECC DDR RAM.

OK, I got it over the 50gb (52 to be exact) and I will let it go and see if I encounter any problems. Not apps, mainly pictures and movies of varying format if that makes any difference to the experiment.

It may be a bit early, and I could jinx myself, but it has been 6 hours and no freeze or reboot yet.

15 hours no freeze or reboot. I think I have cycled through every app I have, is there a particular app or configuration that might be the problem, I can check that on mine.

It's been at least 36 hours and not so much as a hiccup on my phone. I'm calling it done and going to remove the extra data I put on the phone to fill up the phone.

I have just experienced this issue. In my case I had just removed a messaging app that stored data. After deleting the app I was prompted by ES file explorer to delete data, I chose to delete and phone froze then would not boot up until I booted into bootloader and restarted. I am on 7.1.1 Verizon, 32 GB , Samsung storage , rooted and unlocked

Pixel xl 128gb is from Toshiba and the 4gb ram module is from Hynix , unlocked bootloader, rooted , stock recovery. i have 70gb free , no freeze , no reboot

Uninstall ES File Explorer. It is malware and can have serious impact on stability of your device.

Looks like the problem may only be affecting Samsung memory...? Has anyone had any issues with the Toshiba chip?

Shipped wrong device (8 GB instead of 16 GB)

Just noticed Google Play sent me an 8 GB version instead of 16 GB version...
Label on box reads 16 GB but having checked storage I only have 6 GB total storage available. Anyone else had this issue and how quick was Google to respond/rectify it?

The exact same thing happened to me. I called up customer support last Wednesday and I've been waiting for them to ship me a new one since. When I called them up on Friday to see what the hold-up was (on Wednesday they had said it would ship "soon"), they essentially told me to wait until Monday evening and if it still hadn't shipped, call back (though they had no reason to expect it would ship). Which has to be the most useless customer service I've ever experienced.
Anyway, they should send you out a new one. When that will happen is anybody's guess. Google sure as hell doesn't know.
It's odd because from the forum I've seen 8 gb units with 5.92 gb storage, this has 6.02. Wonder if it's correct eMMC with incorrect partition sizes

Yes, mine has 5.92 gb. Have you reflashed anything? I believe there's a thread in this forum by someone who had tried to reflash to stock using Google's binaries, skipped a step, and ended up with what looked like an 8 gb, but with ever so slightly more space. Fortunately after redoing the process again and doing all the steps they got back to 16 gb.

Yeah. For the record I finally received an email from Google to set up my replacement shipment. Mind you, that took 4 days, and nothing's actually been shipped yet -- this was purely to confirm my address and get my permission for a temporary charge on my credit card (in case I don't send the old unit back once I receive the new one).
Hopefully they get the order right this time...
Equivariant,

How's everyone is holding up with the Nexus 4's limited storage.

So this is my first Nexus and my first smartphone where I don't have expandable memory. While I love the phone I'm sure most people including myself wish there was at least a 32gb model. Regardless there's not no sense in beating a dead horse. Just curious on how everyone's making due and what are your solution to the problem. I currently use Dropbox for pics and spotify and Google Music for music. It's working okay so far but apps aren't small these days so they take up some space

no reason to keep backups on your phone at all. store them on your pc or backup drive. should something happen you can always push it to your phone, either manually via abd (push file /sdcard/) or nexus toolkit comfortably.
The space has not effected me very much at all. Compared to my 8 GB iPod Touch my 16 GB Nexus 4 is a luxury.

about 2gb free on the 8Gb version... I'll admit its a bit annoying at times, but overall not really an issue. The Google music, drive and box account for cloud storage basically take care of everything.
The saving grace is google music.. (did the hack to get it working in canada etc..) without that 8Gb would just not be enough at all.
4.2 gb
My last phone was a gs3 and I had a 32gb sd card in it. It being hooked up to sprint I personally couldn't rely I cloud services like I do now my service was that bad, and mind you I live in NY. having switched to A&tt is a lot better . I guess it just a little weird to look at my phone and only see 5gbs free.

AT&T S4 not 16gb internal?

Anyone else connect their phone to a PC and have the internal storage say 9.51GB and not 16GB? Does the phone use up over 6GB for the OS and stock apps? What gives?

I show 9.62 available on mine. It is kind of odd, but they did add a TON of bloatware. Once we get root and can remove those apps, we should be able to recapture quite a bit back.

Yeah mine shows 9.62 total space and 8.48 available after installing my apps from previous phone, kinda sucks but at least there is an SD slot.
I was curious so I checked my old Sprint GNEX 32GB, it also has a chunk missing, about 7.5GB missing, so it is similar.
It would be nice if they listed the missing space as Reserved or System etc. instead of not showing it.
Yup guys 16GB total internal. The ROM and software has to sit somewhere on there. And AT&T has added so much crap to it I'm not surprised. But thats what the SD card slot is for yeah?
The stock apps seem to use up at least 1GB, plus any data they have.
Unsure about the system, but even the system for CyanogenMod 10.1 seemed to be around 600-800MB with all cache/data included. With TouchWIZ on these phones and all the extra bloat, it wouldn't surprise me if there were at least another gig in there.

Exactly. I heard the ROM file for the S4 was like 1.2 gigs or something like that. That's without cache and whatever else it needs to do.
I remember when I had the S3 the ROM file was like 800 megs for TW. And for AOSP it was like 250.
Even with a debloated rom its gonna be the same as the system partition is already set regardless of whats on it...just so you guys know of course it is posssiboe for a dev to tweak partition amounts...but they typically dont unless necessary

Hi,
It's a 4.2.2 "Feature"
It's for the greater good. New generation NAND smokes microSD performance, and you don't wanna bottleneck your device by multitasking from SD. On the other hand 16GB should be dropped entirely, we're talking very minimal cost difference for Samsung, so why not start at 32gigs or 64 and go all the way up to 256? This is HD era, nothing comes in small size.

That's the reason I'm waiting for the 32GB version.
I did the same with the Galaxy S III though I can't understand why they delay the release of the 32GB that much.. I'm pretty sure a lot of people are waiting for that one, right?
And btw, you can put your music on the µSD card, it's just the installed apps that are a problem.
Thanks, yeah you are right. Not sure though if some apps will be smart enough to route downloaded music to my SD card??
While we're at it: My problem is basically the "cloudsync" and more so the "DocumentSync" folder, the latter is > 6 GB large! Anyone knows what that is?
I want to reduce this size, my phone is brand-new!

Swyped from another galaxy
Thanks, indeed. I deactivated all that cloud-syncing nonsense, which solved my problem for now. Now I have a few weeks or months until I have to think again what to do. :-/
Is "Swyped from another galaxy" that a joke on the Samsung Galaxy keyboard system? lol
You're probably looking at 24gb on the 32gb version so a bunch more memory.
Most people will in fact be fine with 9gb though, power users who download a lot of really inefficient apps that cache a lot of things and require a lot of storage should get the 32gb version. I personally will be fine with the 16gb version.
You may be right. I got 2.1 GB of apps for 151 apps, which averages out at 14 MB per app, while I had the feeling that most of my apps are less than 8 MB, oh well. -.-
I won't download any more apps though, but I am sure photographs and stuff will quickly snatch up the remaining 5 GB of space that I freed now...
Will try to find a setting to put my photos on the SD card by default. Any tips (or links to a thread / tutorial about that) are appreciated.

Yeah i am also waiting for the 32GB version because of the same reason.
my htc one s 16gb has 2gb dedicated to apps. for me plenty atm. that's independent of the 9.93 internal sdcard, don't know if s4 is same. however, as mentioned, 16gb phones are too small now days and i won't pay for the s4 till it gets 32gb on att and black--
also don't think i can post links to other forums per xda. but if you google "att 32gb s4", there is a link to an att forum specifically for the 32gb release and an active att moderator--just fyi

First of all.. If u want to store ur camera photos on sd card use camera zoom fx.. It's a very good camera app and there u can choose where to store the photos
The second.. U have 8,8 gb on stock firmware if u install a custom rom in a few weeks it will be more free space because of some bloatware installed on the stock and files we dont need i think.. Let the dev's do there great job

[No Rooting Needed] Enabling "Adaptive Storage" Option.

Recently I found a thread where a member could easily enable Marshmallow's adaptive storage feature which was hidden by Samsung. Good news is that you don't need to root your device for that. Just the knowledge of adb will do.
My concern is, that member has tried the method on his Snapdragon variant. So, is there anyone who has tried it with his Exynox device? I would like to know the success rates from you before trying it out myself.
P.S I don't think variants would matter much.
I am very interested but I don't want to format everything. Too much time consuming

Good to know that it worked for you. I had a few questions though:
1. Is your device an Exynox variant?
2. How did you verify that it worked well? As per the article, the storage values shown by default will get messed up. So which file manager app did you try out for verifying the partition made?

I have adaptive storage enabled since day one on my Exynox variant S7 Edge, it will work fine!
I should post too, based on my experience, enabling adaptive storage may reduce the cards lifespan to around 2 years.
Background, I own 5 Sandisk Micro SD cards (128 GB variant.)
The 1st one I purchased was from Amazon on May 2014 and that was purchased for exclusive use with my Galaxy S4, specifically for Foldermount (obb folder to sd) and Link2Sd (apk to sd, allocated a 10 gig partition for moving apps)
My Galaxy S4 retired August this year and and migrated that sd card to the S7 and adaptive storage it. Last night it died
(write protected)
Am I surprised I only got 2 years out of the card? Not really, using it in this manner will significantly increase the number of writes to the card. Will I still be using adaptive storage in the future? Absolutely!! I purchased the card for $120.00, so that means for me it cost $60.00 per year for the extra space I guess that isn't too bad!?
The other thing you may all want to consider, if you have an addiction flashing the latest and the greatest then you may want to steer clear of adaptive storage, each time you flash a new rom you have to re-partition and re-format the Micro SD twice, then restore your files, so with every rom upgrade, you may significantly wear your card. Something to think about...
120 USD!!!????
