Today I am going to do an review of the Verizon Trade In service. Their trade in service allows you to mail off your smartphones you are no longer using in exchange for an Verizon gift card. The Verizon gift card can be used either for getting a new phone, accessories, or even towards your monthly bill. The trade in value really varies depending on the phone which usually depends on the age of the device along with demand. Obviously newer phones are going to be of higher value so keep that in mind.
The process is pretty simple to do. Go to Trade-In.VZW.com. From there you can start the appraisal of your device, check on the status of your trade in, or go to the trade in support center. Once you start the appraisal you'll then select your device and answer if the device turns on, if the screen works, and if the screen is damaged. You will then get an estimated value of the device. For instance right now an fully functioning HTC Thunderbolt is worth $200 while the same device but not working with a cracked screen is worth all of $2. In comparison an older device such as the Motorola Droid fully working is $24 so obviously in that case I would recommend looking into other methods to sell of said device.
Once you agree to the estimated appraised amount you will then enter in your information to get the pre-paid mailer sent out to you. You will get an e-mail once you complete all that and agree to trade in the device with your submission ID. From my experience it took about four days to get the mailer which came from Tennessee. Verizon does recommend leaving the battery in the device before mailing it back. You however do not need to include stuff such as the data/charging cable, manual, and stuff like that. Once Verizon gets your device they are usually quick in determining the actual value. In my case I got the full $200 for my Thunderbolt. As of right now I am waiting for my gift card to arrive as it was sent out a few days ago.
I will say in summary there is plenty of good about this service but some negatives along the way. The speed of the services with one exception is pretty fast for something mail based. The site itself is clean and easy to use as to be expected from Verizon. Also from the one phone call I made to the support the rep was very friendly about answering my questions so kudos to Verizon on that as well even if the phone support is only available Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 8 PM central time.
There are some improvements I do feel the service could use such as perhaps letting you drop the phone off at a local Verizon store so they can at least mail it off or even if at all possible do the appraisal right there. Of course I would imagine perhaps Verizon is doing this whole mail in thing on purpose so they can test the device to see if its rooted or anything else that your typical store rep might not know how to detect. So I highly recommend for you to unroot your device if you do decide to trade it.
Also I do feel that at least the time it take between when you are told your device is approved and when the gift card is actually mailed out is a bit too long. In my case it was nearly a week before the status on the trade in site finally showed the gift card had been mailed out. That's something in all honesty I can't understand why it takes that long to do given how relatively quick the rest of the process is.
Overall its a good service for what it does but not without its flaws. I do say its worth looking into but keep in mind especially with older devices I do recommend checking other places to see how much more you can get compared to this.
Website: Trade-In.VZW.com
My gift card arrived today in the mail. Just to give heads up the gift card can only be used at in Verizon's words:
Verizon said:
You can use this gift card at Verizon Wireless owned and operated retail locations or for on-line purchases at www.verizonwireless.com. You can also pay your Verizon Wireless bill by visiting My Verizon at www.verizonwireless.com. Please note that this card cannot be used at Verizon Wireless authorized agent/retailer locations.

In other words it can be used only at stand alone Verizon stores and their website. It however can't be used at retail stores such as Best Buy and Walmart along with sites such as Amazon.com.
Here's my official time line of the trade in process:
July 5th – Submitted HTC Thunderbolt for trade in. Apprasial comes up at $200.
July 9th – Envelope arrived to send Thunderbolt in.
July 11th – Thunderbolt mailed in.
July 15th – Verizon e-mails back saying Thunderbolt has been recieved and approved. Says "up to three weeks for gift card to arrive."
July 22nd – Status on Verizon site says gift card has been mailed out.
July 25th – Gift card arrived from Trenton, NJ.
I hope my review is of help to anyone here on XDA.
Have you gotten a certified preowned phone/tablet from it? I want the xoom because it's much cheaper but I don't know...

The trade in program is simply sending your smart phone in exchange for a gift card.
Not a great deal...
While this may sound like a good deal, in reality it's not that great. I have a perfect Droid Incredible (original) and vzw will give me $75 for it. Problem is, I know I can sell it all day long, on craigslist or ebay, for around $200!
For $75 I'll keep it as a backup should I ever need one...

Yep for newer devices such as the Thunderbolt its a good option as you're pretty much set to get back most of what you spent for it. For older devices like the Incredible however you are better off with CL/eBay over Verizon... or just keeping it for backup purposes like I'm doing with my Droid 1.
looks good
Anyone have success trading in an old Moto device after buying a Verizon Moto X for the $100 gift card? The Verizon method is different than the rest of carriers as you have to trade the device in store rather than mail it to Moto. I'm planning on buying a Moto X through Moto Maker with the $100 discount and have got conflicting answers from Verizon if it will qualify. One store said you have to buy the phone direct from Verizon. Another one said it should work - I just need to bring in the box and they will scan the UPC and confirm the promo.
I'm in this boat too... I have an old X2 and want the $100 trade-up discount toward a Moto X DevEd. I went round and round with Motorola support (several different online chat sessions and a couple of emails) about this between this past Saturday and yesterday trying to get an answer before the sale but couldn't get a straight answer from them. As far as I'm concerned there is absolutely NO reason for Verizon to be involved. This is strictly a transaction between us and Motorola. I think they're just trying to force us to do it at a Verizon store so they can be sure to collect their BS activation fee. I scored a discount code and ordered my new Moto X yesterday and I plan to use the "all other carriers" option and send them my X2. One of the email responses I got from them completely ignored my questions about Verizon and instructed me to do just that. I bet that was their way of saying it was OK to sidestep Verizon's BS without saying it explicitly. I figure worst case, they send my X2 back and I have to take it to Verizon after all along with the proof-of-purchase (UPC code/box) from my new Moto X and get the discount that way (and probably have to pay the activation fee).

Stopped into the actual store today (the one that said this wouldn't work) and got a different story. He said you need to bring in the new Moto X, they'll check the IMEI and verify that it is a new phone and first activated on your account, and then take your trade in device for $100.
I've read people were having issues trading in non Verizon devices to Verizon - apparently their list is different than the one on the site - but I've got a Droid 3 so everything should be good to go.
I bought an off-contract verizon dev unit and am just mail in a moto admiral using the "all other carriers" method and bypassing Verizon entirely. I read somewhere this works with the off-contract VZW motos.
https://www.mototradeup.com/?q=start
Hopefully it will work.
The thing is.. it's got NOTHING to do with Verizon! You're trading in a device TO MOTOROLA for a rebate when you buy a new device FROM MOTOROLA. It's strictly a transaction between you and Motorola (or SHOULD be)! That's the way it works when you choose "all other carriers"... why shouldn't it work that way for Verizon??? It shouldn't make any difference. The way I see it, this was Motorola's way of making it up to people like me who got stuck with the POS buggy Droid X2 - as well as the other models included in the program that were left behind too soon and not updated to Ice Creme Sandwich. What if I'd bought my X2 when I was on Verizon and had since switched to AT&T? I should still be able to trade in my old device to Motorola and get the rebate if I buy a new one.
Again... I think the whole thing is just a ploy to get you into the store so they can be sure to charge you the activation fee - and possibly push you into a new plan.

Yep... I'm planning to do the same thing. I AM off-contract (have been since last March) so that may simplify things.

Finally got a chance to do this since I had to exchange my first device.
Big surprise, Verizon changed their story and told me this only works if you're upgrading and signing a contract. Unfortunately the verbiage on the Moto trade up site ("Visit the nearest Verizon Wireless store to make the trade. Trade in your eligible used phone, purchase your eligible new phone, and you'll receive a $100 Verizon Wireless gift card") gives way to this, so I'm not sure what else you could argue. Typical of Verizon to weasel their way into someone else's promotion and want a piece of it. I will try the other store in my area but don't have much confidence it will work.

I did last week, but it will take 6-8 weeks to hear back. And they will not return the device if there is a problem. So I'm risking $20 here.

I did this too... bought a Verizon Moto X DevEd online and sent my Droid X2 in using the "all other carriers" option. Waiting to hear back from them. I didn't see anything about them not sending your device back if there's a problem... but I will raise holy hell with them if they try to balk on this rebate. This has NOTHING to do with Verizon.

Received this email today. I am on verizon and went through the website after buying my x off contract (not the verizon store):
We've received your submission and have verified it meets all of our terms and conditions. Please allow us 6-8 weeks to process your device and mail you the $100 Motorola Visa prepaid card.

Thanks for posting this, I'm with Verizon too and I used your same method getting a Developer edition and sending my Admiral.
I was concerned because I haven't received an update, I sent it on June 7th and the tracking number shows they received it on the 12th.
So they actually took 2 months to process your Admiral?
How long after their confirmation did you received the actual gift card?
Thanks!

I just got the card about a month ago. They claimed to have sent it 3 times prior to that (I emailed them repeatedly) but it never arrived until the 4th attempt.
The odds of the post office losing 3 pieces of mail in a row is essentially 0. In other words, they aren't sending some (or all) of the cards at all until you complain.

A few weeks ago I spoke to a Verizon rep and he said that I would be paying off the Note 7 until I decided to replace it in the exchange.
HOWEVER
Just a few days ago as I was looking at my Verizon bill that my Note 7 payments had disappeared. Surprised by this, I asked a rep in the chat about it -- they told me that my Note 7 was completely paid for (I didn't pay it, in fact, I put the minimum down and was making payments since). Has anyone else noticed this on their accounts? It's a nice surprise.
When I turned mine in, I found out that they never charged me for my replacement note.

Verizon said refund I did not ask for is on the way
Just got this from Verizon:
You should receive your check soon. View online
Your Samsung Galaxy Note7 refund has been processed.
We processed your refund due to the recent recall of your purchased Samsung Note7. You will receive a check in 2-3 weeks for the amount of $864.00, which includes the purchase price of the device, any purchased Note7 accessories, and any fees paid during your upgrade or exchange.
If you have not already upgraded your Note7, you qualify for special incentives when you upgrade to a new device. The easiest way to upgrade is online:
• Customers upgrading to another Samsung device will receive a $100 bill credit. Customers upgrading to any other device will receive a $25 bill credit. Credits will be applied to your bill in 1-2 bill cycles.
• Upgrade fees will be waived at checkout.
• Plus, all orders receive free 2-day shipping.
• For detailed instructions and FAQs, please visit: go.vzw.com/note7faq.
After your order is processed, you will receive a special recovery box to return your Note7. Please send us your Note7 at your earliest convenience.
I have had no communication with them and intend to keep my phone until next Note comes out. I guess if they send me a check and I don't cash it and don't use their return box, I'd be okay for a while. This is pretty aggressive I'd say.

Wow, this is interesting. Have you done anything that would make Verizon think that you're no longer using your Note 7? Also was this in an email or text? I've been getting intermittent texts about returning the phone, but they all say the same thing about the voluntary recall.
Just checked my verizon account, my line no longer shows a phone payment charge, just the line access charge. Interesting. Any way to take advantage of this situation? lol

I have kept a very low profile and done nothing to make them think I am returning it or not using it. I get the periodic stock text, but nothing like this. If I were to accept the refund, I would think they might be able to blacklist my IMEI, and it would seem logical if I receive payment I would not longer own the phone. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks. I will. My current plan is to ignore the refund if they send it, as well as any return box they might send. I'll be horse that gets led to water, but I won't drink!
I got a note 7 right when the new batch released which I think was around September 21st and I've had mine since. As soon as the second recall was announced around Oct 10th Verizon wiped it clean from my account even though I still had it. It also showed my upgrade available so I got a Pixel XL which I then exchanged for the V20 and I still have the Note 7 as I type this. I even spoke with Verizon on the phone and the girl said my account shows no record of me having a Note 7, so I'm keeping it. I just use it as a wi-fi device now. If Verizon had any intentions of charging for the device they would have waited until it was returned before issuing any refunds or erasing from people's account.
i think you folks who bought them from Verizon are getting these freebies. i bought mine from a small affiliate store and am not seeing refunds.

Yeah I got my replacement the first day they were available -- this must when the payments were cancelled. Has anyone on Verizon with a note 7 not had their payments taken care of?
When the 2nd recall was announced verizon refunded me all the payments i had made and they gave me my upgrade back, i upgraded to the V20 and still have my note 7. Samsung sent me a box to send it back but i never did that was a month ago
i still have the og note 7. got it right before the recall hit in september. . as far as i can tell its free for me as well. i made one payment and was even refunded for that!! LoL

Sadly I did too but paid full retail and there is no discount, only if you finance it you get discount. I cancelled and ordered direct from samsung to get it a day earlier and get the VR that day too BB delivery is 21st and Sammy is the 20th. Wont have to mess with submitting the receipt and waiting for the VR separate too this way.
PRE-ordered...still waiting
I ordered it by the time it lunch...but looks like that I still have to wait a long time to get it on my hand....
Its hard to image wht the guys on youtube can get it sooooooooooooooo early
Just got back from Best Buy and got my order in for the S8+ in black. No money out of pocket right now but as soon as I receive email to pick up the phone they will also send me the coupon for the 100 off and links to claim the VR and 256g memory card. Plan on paying in full then. (couldnt believe they would not accept any payment today??) Hope all this goes well and surprising how this new S8+ is looking to cost less out the door than I remember my S7E costing.
Can't wait.
Anyone know why it is or isn't better to order direct from Samsung?
Me I just want the phone, the akg headphones, and the 256gb sdcard cause my s7a is acting like a windows 98 computer aka being extremely slow cause of the android 7 update. And cause the headphones I think are noise canceling headphones. And cause I kept filling up my 64gb sdcard. I don't really care about the vr or the controller for vr cause I'm waiting for the Microsoft hollowlense headset that's coming out holiday season this year for pc and xbox that and I only used my vr that I got with my original s7e all of 5 times in the first 2 months of owning it then it just sat on my floor collecting dust. If it wasn't for my s7a being extremely slow I wouldn't be upgrading right now. I personally originally wanted to wait for the note 8 but that's not happening now. Now I'm just going to wait for the note 10 in 2019 after I get my s8+ this year. Now I really can't wait till I get my s8+ cause I'm going to get the 256gb sd, akg headphones, and the vr bundle aka the Samsung Immersive VR Experience Box.

Delivery a day sooner,(20th) and get vr same day instead of mail in. Plus can finance with paypal instead of "leasing" or carrier financing that way you can unlock it for straight talk, cricket etc. Cricket unlimited is 55$ for unlimited lte and 2 year paypal finance is 24$ a month. Way better than paying carrier over 100 for their gimmicky plans or 3mbps speed limit. Cricket is att towers btw and the device does NOT need to be network unlocked to use a cricket sim card.
Any of you guy aware about claiming the Gear VR from Samsung? ATT guy told me that I should to Samsung site to claim the GearVR. However the Samsung sites says to come back after getting the phone.

Anyone know for sure that AT&T isn't going to remove the included headphones I've seen in multiple unboxings?
delivery a day sooner with Samsung.com ?
funny, I preordered att 8+ at bestbuy. status shows "get it by April 20"
I ordered Samsung Direct and it says 20th on my order too. I just hate AT&T sooooo much! But I am stuck with them as its my company phone
I don't see why they would remove the headphones cause if they did that then bby wouldn't be able to offer that package then either cause almost every bby has a att experience center in it now. Besides the headphones are part of a specific vr bundle aka the samsung immersive vr experience bundle box. They can't not offer the headphones and still offer the 256gb sd card cause both things are included in the box you get with the samsung immersive vr experience box. Basically if you pre-order the s8 or s8+ and choose the samsung immersive vr experience box bundle you are saving $1,380-$1,480 cause that's how much it would be to piece all of it together including buying either the s8 or s8+ out-right and your getting it all for only $100 plus whatever you have to pay in installments. Personally I would rather have to only pay $100 plus my installment payments and not have to pay $1,580
I was referring to basic wired ones not part of promo. Usually Samsung includes a pair with most phones, but AT&T is too cheap and removes them along with changing box
I hate that AT&T changes the nice looking black box to their fugly one, the other carriers leave the box alone why AT&T, WHY?!

Att does not give earbuds? Screw that Im cancelling and getting a Tmobile one and getting it unlocked.
I was waiting until the S8 came out to trade in my Note7. So, I went to an AT&T store today to preorder. They told me the deadline (Dec. 31, 2016) for exchanging the Note7 had passed, and that I wouldn't get any credit toward the S8. They did let me restart my Next plan, but I'm back at month 0 and the money I paid in for the Note7 is gone.
Is this correct? I don't see anything on the AT&T website about a deadline. Was there a notification about it as part of the software updates (which I had blocked)?
And would this mean, for someone who had bought the phone outright rather than on the Next plan, that AT&T would give them nothing when they brought the Note7 back? There is certainly no incentive to return it in that situation, assuming they want the remaining devices back.
Actually, it gets somewhat worse. The store ordered the wrong phone for me (S8 instead of S8 Plus) and there is a charge on my bill for $613.77 that shouldn't be there. I called the store and they said to call customer service. I called customer service and they said to go back to the store.
Hey bro, I just returned my note 7 (and the case) last Thursday for a FULL REFUND. They dropped $294.64 in my account. My at&t next was void and then I could start a new one.
You made the mistake by asking what your phone was worth. You must say I want a full refund for my note 7 and all the accessories. I kept hearing this December 31st date but it's nothing official. What they mean to say is after the last update (around December 31st) you will not be able to charge your phone. But we blocked those updates.
I then went to best buy mobile where they have the best offer for the s8 plus. You get $100 off... Yes $100 off PLUS all the Samsung promotions (gear vr and controller)
Hope you can go back and speak to the manager.
Keep me posted...
-b0Ne
That's interesting. Thanks for the info.
The manager at the store said there was a December 31 deadline. I sat there and looked through the AT&T website, and told him there was no deadline listed there. He said, "Well, it says that in our info."
I also went through the online chat when I got home. They said I couldn't get any credit for the installments already paid.
After going back to the store today, I did at least get them to remove the $613.77 charge they had put on my account (which they acknowledged was an error, charging me to pay off the Next plan on the Note7).
It's great you got them to give you a refund. Maybe I'll take another crack at calling customer service after I actually give them the phone back.

Dude, I would be threatening them with a call to the Consumer Protection Agency.
I didn't receive anything that says I had to turn my Note in by Dec 31, have them show you where they sent that message to you.
AT&T Store Return
I was a victim of Samsung's mandatory update last week, while still waiting to (hopefully) exchange it for a S8+. I had originally bought mine full price at Best Buy, then activated it at an AT&T store, exchanged for the 'safe' version etc.
The update disabled the USB-C port and charging, so I was forced to take it in. With a promotion on the S7 Edge I also received a Gear S2 watch, a Galaxy TabE, (both 99 cents without requiring a new contract; just 10$/Month device fee) And was able to use 99$ out of my 200$ + credit on a Gear VR.
I was sad to finally let go of my Note7 after so much resistance, but suffice it to say I walked out pleasantly surprised at the extras I received.

But they didn't give you any problems with the exchange like the other guy here saying you're screwed because you didn't exchange in December ehhh?

I was told that myself at an AT&T store when I inquired about it in mid-December, even knowing both AT&T & Samsung's website said differently. However I know a lot of those guys are working on hearsay or don't bother to look it up, so I'm the type to just drive to the next AT&T store and try again. There never was and still isn't an end date to the recall according to the ATT website, which is exactly what they refer to. Even regardless of the N7's condition.
EDIT: Can't post URL's yet but it's ATT website article KM1122948

I looked at that article, never saw anything about a Turn in date deadline
I remember seeing a sign at my ATT store which is an authorized dealer that said to get refund you had to turn in by DEC 31. So maybe it deals with third party stores that are not corporate stores? I have heard people say DEC 31 was the deadline but never found nothing official on that. Still no matter what they should take the phone and give a refund as its an official recall and they can't make you eat the money lost. Maybe you need to go through Samsung now to get a refund? Who knows as companies loves to do the run around game

They should have provided a Loaner until the replacement was available, like they originally said they would and like they did in some markets.
The only replacement for a Note is a New Note...
Well I am hoping when the new note 8 comes out Sammy doesn't forget about us note 7 owners and how we was done wrong. But I'm sure they will. Heck I would take a fixed note 7 but they are not to be sent to the US market from what I read.

I'm picking up my S8+ on Friday, at which point I'll drop off my Note7 at the AT&T store.
My plan is to wait a few days then contact AT&T, saying "Now that you have my phone back, when do I get a refund for the money I paid in installments and sales tax?" My hope is that this gets automatically refunded once they physically get the phone, despite what the store manager said about a December 31 deadline.

Why don't you just hand them the Note 7, get refund, buy S8+, or it should be swap?
That's essentially what I'm doing. But the manager said no refund after December 31. Actually, they initially charged me $600 in remaining payments, but I got that reversed (they admitted the charge was an error).

Note 7
Can anyone who has had success exchanging their phone tell me their store location? Seems random but I am at the point with att I want to leave. I am trying to return my note 7 and the stores keep telling me no. The call center is telling me they have to but every location I go to its the same crap. Both corporate and other have the same stuff about dec31st..... doesn't make any sense to me but maybe if I can prove locations are in fact honoring the exchange I might have some luck.
At this point it seems like more a choice than corporate policy and all the hoops I've jumped through just this week I am at my breaking point.
I returned my note 7 for a full refund two weeks ago at the highway 151 store in San Antonio. They also gave me a refund for my case that I purchasedI'm picking up my s8 plus on Friday. Got a $100 off coupon for purchasing the phone at best buy mobile.
They refunded all my money on my debit card. They told me I couldn't get cash because they didn't have enough money in the store to give cash. They told me they could put it on any debit card of my choice.

S8 refund
I was also given the same story about no refund being issued after Dec 31 but I refuse to take that as an answer. I called customer service at least 6 times and was placed on hold many of times, everyone kept telling me the same story and I just kept asking to speak to a manager and kept climbing up the chain. I mentioned taking legal action and they said a manager would call me back within 72 hours and he never did. I called the 7th time and the operator issued me the refund on everything i had paid except the tax (she said i had to try to claim that at the store where the phone was purchased. Will return once I get my phone today in the mail.
Good luck and don't let them take your money!!!
I took my Note7 back to the AT&T store today, having received my S8+ yesterday. After an hour there (most of it while they were on the phone with customer service), they said they couldn't take it back at the store, but they printed out a shipping label for me to return it.
At this point, I'm debating whether to mail it to AT&T and try to get my past payments refunded, or just keep the thing--maybe use it as a music player or something.

I'm confused, did they give you your money back for it?
