If you're on NMF26O, and you try to sideload last month's V, it will fail. It will not allow flashing an older version over a newer.

I thought we can downgrade thought that's one or the points of having a unlocked bootloader can't even run the flash all or fastboot back to a older firmware?

Well yes. If your bootloader is already unlocked, you can fastboot flash an earlier factory image.
I misunderstood your question. I thought you were asking about a device with a locked bootloader.

[GUIDE][XT1540][1GB&2GB] Updating to Marshmallow

Disclaimer:
I'm not responsible if you mess up following this guide and result in a dead phone with tears.
About this guide: This guide is intended to destroy all confusions that are arising from the MM rollout in US which many users like myself have failed to receive. Let me point it out that if you own an XT1540 Moto G and have not yet received the update, grabbing the MM OTA Update manually will NOT let you upgrade as the version required for the upgrade won't match with what you'll have. This is why one needs to follow these steps (regardless whether you own a 1GB or 2GB model) in order to successfully update to MM:
Required:
- XT1540 1GB Retail Latest Build from here.
- Knowledge on how to flash Motorola Factory Images. (Use this guide as a reference to learn)
Procedure:
1. Download the firmware image and extract it.
2. Put your phone in Bootloader Mode (Use the reference guide mentioned above).
3. BE CAREFUL. Flash away using the marvelous reference guide. However there is one upside IF you are coming from stock 5.1.1 with NO ROOT or MODs, you can skip the following commands in fastboot in order to avoid ERASING AND WIPING DATA:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot erase userdata
4. Now power on your phone, and check for updates and there will be an OTA update just waiting for you there.
5. Download it and enjoy MM.
Questions:
Q: Can this method be used on XT15XX versions?
A: No. The firmware is specifically for XT1540 and so is the guide.
Q: My phone got stuck on bootlogo. What to do?
A: Wait patiently. If you have followed all the steps in the reference guide and this guide properly, there should be no problem.
Q: Wouldn't flashing a 1GB firmware on a 2GB device malfuntion it?
A: I, personally own a 1GB model so I haven't tested. But many 2GB users have reported working with absolutely no issues.
If there are any more questions, feel free to PM me or comment below. If you want this thread to stay alive, refrain from posting the same questions again and again. Check OP for questions and answers before posting as I will keep on updating it with new questions that are asked.
Thanks to: @lost101 for the reference guide and factory image.
I got a "Preflash validation failed" error when flashing boot.img. I have a locked bootloader, and didn't want to mess up the phone yet, so backed out and rebooted. I'm guessing this is for unlocked bootloader devices only then?

Factory images work with locked bootloader.
okay that's weird. Any idea why I'm getting that error then?

It will also happen if you try to flash an older bootloader than you have on your phone.
will this wipe all of the data on the phone like past call list and texts?

I just read your post and also figured out...
IF YOU ARE STOCK => you do not have to do these commands..
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot erase userdata
Unfortunately for me, I did those commands and my wife is pissed.... (moral of the story... Backups, Backups, Backups) To be honest I thought that text history was being backed up by Google Backup.
UPDATE! My wife's 2G version is working flawlessly on MM after doing this update. Phone still has 2G of ram.

Followed guide and update is downloading!!! Great work guy!
is there a reason you need the stock image from your link?
Can we not use the stock image for 2GB models from this thread?

No, you can't because 2GB model does not have 72-65 version image. Only 1 GB model does.

No you should not. Maybe your zip file has been damaged. Try redownloading and then try again. If the problem persists, PM me.

Checked md5 sums and they match. Perhaps it really is just an older bootloader than what I have?

EDIT: I just got the prompt (like an 1hr ago) to download/install Marshmallow OTA on my 2GB model using the image I mentioned above, everything went successful! Screenshots below
If I'm running the soak test mm rom will this method affect me as far downgrading the bootloader? I doubt it will but I'd like to be sure being that this is my first time flashing with fastboot and a moto device. I'm accustomed to odin for Samsung so excuse my noobness but I'd like to not turn my daughter's Xmas gift into a paperweight. Thanks in advance

Even though I don't care to use an OTA, I did decide to try flashing it over the soak. It wouldn't work, because the soak is apparently looking for a Lollipop rom. I don't really care about going back just to go forward a little. I'm going to wait on the full download of MM when it's available for the XT1540. The latest soak is running perfectly for me, so I shouldn't be in any hurry to change anything, but I'm just a tinkerer and I'm not happy unless I can try something new weekly.

Does 11 Toshiba eMMC matter if already unlocked

I think that my phone is already unlocked. To be honest I'm not 100% sure. I am running a deodexed rooted version of lollipop right now, but I did all this stuff almost 2 years ago and haven't messed with any of it since. I do have an icon of unlocked padlock when booting up my phone. I think that means the bootloader is unlocked, but I'm not sure if that is what it means or not. Someone on reddit shared a link to an article by jdrch (Sorry can't link to it, still new here) about unlocking the bootloader and installing CyanogenMod 13 for G900V. The first thing he has you do is check your eMMC, but the article says this:
"As of this writing, it does not work for S5s with 11 Toshiba eMMCs. Due to the possibility of the bootloader unlock exploit being patched in the Marshmallow update, I’d highly suggest doing this BEFORE updating to any stock Marshmallow OTA."But if I intend to go straight to CM13 (if that is possible) does it even matter that I don't have correct eMMC?
EDIT: Nevermind. I see now that my bootloader is not unlocked and after doing some more searching through the forums. I have found that it is not possible for the Toshiba eMMC chip. :crying: I need a new phone.

You are NOT unlocked and do not pretend you are.
You cannot flash CM13. The unlock icon when you boot is simply a result of having a custom binary installed.

Nexus 6p nougat bootloader

I have a major problem, I need to know if it will be possible to flash a custom rom on a nexus 6p. It seems that it will be hard because of that new bootloader.

The bootloader does get updated. But you can unlock any bootloader, and updating it doesn't lock it again. Take a look at my guide:

Oh, because i was afraid of the phone won't boot because of the android n won't boot if the phone has a unlocked bootloader.

Nope, nothing like that to worry about. The locked/unlocked status won't stop it from booting.
Thanks. I can now upgrade in peace

Flashed Wrong Firmware

Hello friends of the XDA community. I have a Sprint unlocked variant. I'm on T-Mobile, but after September's update, I got sim invalid message. I thought this would be an easy fix to downgrade back to the previous stock Pie Firware. So I went to the Essential website and downloaded the wrong firmware and flashed it, it was open market but I have a Sprint device. Now the device just bootloops every time I try to flash the correct firmware. When I try to flash the correct firmware, it says wiping data and than it starts transfering data and a second after it reboots and bootloops. Am I doomed? Thanks guys.
Open market works fine on Sprint devices. What did you download? Did you unlock your bootloader? Unlock critical?
Thank you so much for you help. I finally got it back up and running.

Maybe essential will release a fix in a few days for the relocked Sprint phones. Otherwise, if you wanted to unlock it yourself so you can run the latest update, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77532356&postcount=20 since it sounds like you already have your bootloader unlocked.
Do you mean bootloader or sim in terms of unlocking? Bootloader is fine. I'm sim locked.

With an unlocked bootloader, you can either root and flash sim-unlocked modemst images with dd, or downgrade the bootloader and use it to flash.

Pie Factory Images Released

Haven't seen anyone say anything yet about it...
MR0 and MR1 Pie factory images released for Global
MR1 for CKH
Sorry ATT variant, not yet..

I'm on ATT variant too, already ditched their build and using global firmware. No issues so far. Hope this helps someone else.

Yup! Just be sure the unlock bootloader. Reason why I waited a while, was ATT usually doesn't like bootloaders to be unlocked, so they'll lock that down. Not the case with this phone.
So I unlocked the bootloader, which factory reset the phone. Then flashed the global firmware for Oreo. But you'll be lucky, you can flash the latest pie firmware from the start. I had to flash the Oreo global, then update from within settings to get pie.
Good luck.

Yes and no. If you don't root, you'll get ota's no problem. Rooted, you will still see the update, but there is a more involved process to update.
Once you're on global firmware, consider yourself an unlocked variant of the phone. Forget ATT.

Nope. Just follow the instructions on the Razer site. Easy.
