Wasn't sure where to post this. For the last year or so despite having Gmail as auto sync, it would not sync unless I manually pull down to sync it.
Well I found a solution after a year long search of no results. Under settings, battery and selecting the top 3 button on top right of battery screen I selected batty optimization. And changed Gmail to not optimized. Gmail now sync with out errors.
I was thrilled to fix it and wanted to post for others who may be in the same issue.
Mods, if this needs to go to another section please move. Wasn't sure where to post this.

Not sure if you read the whole post, but by removing battery optimization from Gmail solved the issue. I'm not trying to say I have an issue. I'm sharing the solution in case anyone else is having that same issue.

Fully read your post. I had the same issue and for that reason I tried several mail clients.
Since several months I am using Aquamail. IMO better than Gmail. Aquamail has more options and is flexible and important for me there is a dark theme. That's my solution and like to add it to your nice post.

I have not made any changes to the settings but all of a sudden my phone is not consistently syncing with my gmail account. It only syncs every once in a while and it does not sync all the unread emails.
I have tried a reboot by taking the battery out.
Can anyone think of anything else I can do? Thanks in advance for the help.
Have you checked your Account Sync settings (Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync) yet? Any errors? Sometimes you'll see a red splat letting you know an account can't currently sync. Usually, this is just a temporary issue.
I'll wait to speculate anything else until you can post more info about what you're seeing in your Accounts & Sync settings.
No errors. No ideas.

Man, we're going to need some more info. Did it ever work? What does "once in a while" mean? There's no such thing as random...
It's worked for the last 4 weeks perfectly. My phone was getting gmail faster then the gmail app on my laptop.
Yesterday I received 25 gmails but it only synced one of them. Hmm, I wonder if it could be the new gmail "priority" email thing since the one email that did sync was a friend and the others may have been ads. But I don't see a setting for that.

Yeah, I'd look into that whole Priority Inbox thing. I'm not using that at all because I just don't need it - and I run my own business and still don't need it. It sounds like something "superficial" is at play here. If you weren't syncing you'd truly just not be syncing - or would have errors in the Accounts & Sync area.
As far as I can tell, the whole Priority Inbox thing is managed server-side - i.e. I don't see an option for it within the Android app. Considering no one else is having a similar issue (and those who are using Priority Inbox know what to expect, so they aren't seeing an "issue" on their phone), I would suspect a setting/configuration/option as the problem; and not an actual problem with syncing.
Keep us all posted though! What users expect from software and what software actually does, are two different things...
Thanks for the help. I don't think I did anything to resolve the problem. It just started working again. Maybe it was a gmail thing.
Thanks again.

I've noticed similar behavior once in a while.. i found that unchecking and rechecking the mail sync checkbox in sync settings will temporarily resolve it.. and it doesn't happen very often.
I've always thought it maybe had to do with me toggling the gsm only/wcdma gsm auto settings as I go to and from my house and/or the combination of manually turning mobile data on and off (all battery management exercises) so I just leave mobile data on now (still have always on data off.. this was going to be my next thing I tried if it kept up) and it seems to happen less often but still once in a blue moon it'll hang..
I also use priority inbox but haven't had any other evidence that led me to believe that this was the culprit.

Any1 having issues with their Google Calendar not syncing?
This is my first Nexus 7 - 32GB
OS - 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Stock
Can't get any entries onto my N7 calendar widget.
Is it a 4.1.2 issue or my user error?
Did you enable calendar sync in /settings/accounts/Google?
Is your Gmail account ticked in calendar/settings/calendars to display?

Yes to both!
Update: just unchecked the accounts & added back.
Lo&behold it works.
Thanks for chiming in.
Slight different problem I am having...
In settings -> accounts -> google, there is no calendar entry despite the fact that I have installed calendar from the market.
When I go to sync in the calendar app, it shows my google account, but clicking on that shows 'no calendars'. I don't know why it's not working as it syncs just fine to my phone, so I don't think it's a sharing or permission error.
Anyone with a suggestion?
Similar problem
Hey I'm experiencing a similar issue, my google calendar won't sync, tells me to add an account and when I do says it has already been added. If I try to add a new entry the app force closes.
Bough the N7 yesterday, have been using google calendar on my phone just fine. Tried resyncing but no joy. Any solutions out there for this?
Found a solution if anyone comes here with a similar problem, turns out the calendar was not visible, just click on today's window in the app and make sure all the accounts are white rather than tan. Wow, do I feel silly hehe

Hi, I am not a super-user, but also not quite a noob. I've rooted devices and feel I'm relatively competent. I am only mentioning this to simply clarify who's asking, because I am not at all clear on these instructions.
I missed a doctor appointment because my phone (which had all my appointments) did not sync to my N7. Oddly, it did sync some (when, I don't know). I've tried everything I could think of. I've only had the N7 for about 2 weeks, and have found the menu options lacking.
To be clear, my phone has the data. The N7 does not. All boxes have been checked on both Google accts. And, as one does in a situation like this, I unchecked and rechecked them to no avail.
Thanks for the help and everyone's suggestions.

Trying to help a friend and I don't want to make a mess of his phone. What happens when I "uncheck" the google accont? Does it erase his user completely with pictures and contacs and so on?
Hi Folks,
This is my first time on the XDA Developers forum so go easy on me, i've had a look around but cannot seem to find any posts with this problem.
I have a nexus 4 and have set up my 3 email accounts on the stock email app. The checking frequency is set to 'never' on each account as i only check my email once every day or so and don't want any unnecessary data usage.
So my issue is that if i load the app into combined view, so all my email accounts show on the same screen, there is no option to sync all 3 accounts at the same time, i have to click into each account individually for the sync process to start, then go back into combined view to see all 3 accounts email on the one screen. I'm sure that can't be right as that seems to defeat the object of having the combined view if i have to click into each account to start the sync, i might as well view the accounts individually. I'm sure that on my old HTC One X on the HTC Mail app as soon as i launched the app the sync process started for all the accounts on the phone.
I have tried turning auto sync on in the 'data usage' menu but it doesn't make any difference.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
The thread subject is kind of misleading which makes it look like a bug but anyway.
This is normal and not really a bug at all what so ever, you can use a 3rd party app from the Play Store to do the job.

Hey all,
I was having issues with my Moto X alerting me that it could not sign in to my Yahoo account. However, when I would go into the app, it would function correctly without me logging back in or taking any action. But, the notifications were annoying as it was happening at least once per day.
Anyway, I played around with the account settings and was able to remedy the issue, or so I believe. The fix is pretty darn easy...
- Go into either the mail app itself or go into system settings, click on the Email account, then account settings
- Click on your email address [email protected] to adjust those preferences
- Scroll all the way down and click on Incoming Settings, under the Server heading it should read: Android.imap.yahoo.com
- Remove the "Android." piece of the phrase, so it should now read: imap.yahoo.com
- Click Done
- Repeat these steps under the Outgoing Settings as well and your issue should be resolved
Let me know if this works for you, or if you continue to have issues, thanks.
Fine, good work's it. I am already done it.. thanks
Unfortunately yahoo has been doing this with android for years and no combination of settings will fix the random sign in errors. It can go weeks or even months between episodes for me.

You are right. It really has nothing to do with settings. It's on Yahoo's end not our phones. I ve been getting that sign in error ever since my 1st android phone (Htc hero) so i am used it by now. It comes and goes away.

Interesting. I have always been able to modify the incoming and outgoing settings to remedy the issue. I will let everyone know if this works long term. Thanks for the info.
I am a few days into this correction and have yet to receive any notice from the phone / Yahoo / mail app that I could not be signed into Yahoo. Not waving the flag yet, but for those of you who were having this issue, it may well be a simple and permanent fix.
Hope it works for you, this error happens randomly and intermittently so I just live with it and have transitioned most things to gmail.

Yeah, multiple days into the experiment now and still working as advertised.
After over a month of use, I can now 100% confirm this fix. I have not had any issues since the day I made the change to the settings. So if anyone is still having this issue, please feel free to use the info provided in the first post.
Glad it worked for you, only temporary fix for me. I broke down and installed the Yahoo mail app again. Its gotten much better and does not destroy the battery any more.

Which Email app are you referring to? I don't think there was a specific one for AOSP... If you hate using Gmail app for Google Mail try Inbox. It took a little getting used to but I can't use Gmail anymore on my desktop or phone.
Inbox is great.
I don't use Gmail. I want tho aosp email. The one that was posted above is the one I wanted, but it wants me to update it to Gmail.

Maybe try using an older version on the site. Uninstall first then downgrade (a few downgrade if needed) and see if it still does. Could be something they added in the app when they were moving away from AOSP originally. Otherwise you may be SOL.
I'll try it

I don't like the Gmail app either. I used Type App.
What's the difference between typeapp and bluemail? They look the same
I also hate Gmail for my work email. I've been using boxer by VMware. The company is reputable and I like the app so far. No limitations or paid features. It does everything I need and supports exchange with contact sync and push notifications which is what I needed specifically.
Nine
I use blackberry Hub app works great used it on my note 5 as-well.
Bluemail is the best out there but I cannot see the icons on the top strip in light mode. Anyone have this problem?

Nine's the best!
I use Nine, as already mentioned, which is great because it can contain a work Office 365/Exchange administrator's access to control your phone, to just within the app. Nine also syncs calendars well, which I really like. I also really like AquaMail. Both apps do fine with Google, Outlook, Yahoo, IMAP, etc.

Is this better than Outlook for Android? Is there anything that will combine one nice email app into one, for both personal and work email? Gmail sucked for my work email as well. Been using Outlook for Android, which is fine, but a bit clunky.
