Anyone know why it is that Chrome for android bypasses OpenDNS settings. I've applied the DNS on the router, other browsers get filtered however chrome just dosnt seem to work. Can anyone shed any light on this?
i use open dns on router too and chrome works just fine on my fathers tablet.check if your wifi settings for your network are set to DHCP. if it's static then maybe you have set different dns on your device so your phone bypass the router settings. this is the only thing i can thing right now. oh also try to clear chrome data and cache from app manager.

Well simply put I was inputting dns address into the wrong place on the router.
And also bought a static IP from my provider

static ip uh? thats nice now you don't have update your external ip as i do
Ah yeah that must be a pain. Static costing me like £5 a month so not a big price. Although I've heard its a lot easier to get "hacked" when on things like Xbox online.

for me my carrier sells static ip for 6 € per month.I don't think that static ip will made you open to attacks. The truth is if someone know your ip can try to attack you but your router has firewall so what the possibilities? Also close UPnP thats more unsecure to that stuff

Thanks, tried this already. I do not see any difference. I was looking for a US based open DNS
I had the same problem when using a static IP and DNS:s for the WLAN (configured it to work at home wlan) and then connected the phone to the internet via GPRS/UMTS.
Opera worked without a problem, but for somereason, IE made ns calls to my private DNS servers and after that it started to query operators DNS's. So all I did was to remove static DNS/IP from the WLAN card and things started to work. I haven't tried this with my new rom, but the problem was confirmed with the original ROM.
Hi everyone,
Simple question ... I've installed Ad free to download (I guess) a host file containing ad sources so browsing is less frustrating and probably faster.
Is there a similar way to add a list of porn websites to the host file? If it's not similar, how difficult could it be? I know a bit of Java and linux, but doing this on a phone might be out of my reach at this point.
Some direction would be welcome. Thanks!
If you know the sites you'd like to block, you could pull the hosts file yourself, edit it with notepad, and then repush it.
Just want to make sure I'm reading this right.... 3shirtlessmen wants to modify his hosts file to block pornography.
Sounds like a great setup for a joke.

on wifi you can set the DNS server to openDNS I've never used it but from what i understand you can configure it to block sites, also i believe there was a script that could be run on rooted phones to change the 3g DNS server as well but i don't know if it works on the nexus or where to find it other than on the g1 board.

I use opendns on my router to block filesharing and proxies - it works well (though someone fairly technical will always find a way around it). The issue I have is that it does not play nice with vpn's (even when I have configured the opendns account for the vpn) and I can't change the dns settings on my nexus to use google dns (even with the settings in the dns field), as it still seems to pick up the settings from the router. If you don't use vpn, and are happy for all devices to be subject to the same restrictions, then opendns may be the answer (or at least it will block that content on your internet connection).
OpenDNS is used on my home network, and it does block pornography. This is meaningless on a phone when you can disable wireless though. Thanks for the tip.
How do I push and pull the host file from the phone?

Hi!
I'm a novice in the Android, XDA world...
I recently bought a G3, and after 1 day I had upgraded to Froyo.
But I'm having some troubles with proxy...
At my home, I don't need it, so everything works fine using my wifi connection.
But at work, I configure the proxy and Web Brower, Navigation, and others apps keeps working.
OTHO, some apps can't connect (eg. market, maps, rom gripper, etc).
Anybody knows where I can configure the default way of general apps connect to internet?
TKS.
The proxy probably filters your traffic and blocks it on not well-known ports. You should ask its administrator for details on what kind of traffic it allows (if that is feasible).

The proxy only allows connections on port 3128.
Do you think that some apps just woks with port 80?
And, if that's the case, anybody knows how to change it?

^i thikn itd be easier to use a different proxy than change app ports, but im not sure

I guess you're talking about use some app that changes the proxy address for all, include apps...
I'm using native G3 proxy settings. I tried connect using proxy with other apps but anyone did it for me, just the android's stock.
I need a file on system that allows me to change the connection configurations (I mean... I think I need it! )
Hey, Nathan I'm having a similar problem except that only port 8080 is open through proxy.
I am using transproxy to connect to the net.
All apps work except Market downloads and Gtalk dont work.
Did u get a solution ?

I can't do it yet. Here, the port that is open is 3128.
Some apps just bypass the proxy settings.
Even when I let the proxy (configured because my workplace network)configured, market works at my home (where there's no proxy).
But browser and others (that works fine with proxy) don't.
I don't know if this is a built-in app configuration (if it is, the only way is to create a route, using the address called by app, redirecting to the proxy - actually, I thought in that just now! I'll test it later! ), that is present on Market, Navigation, Maps and others...
Or if this is a system configuration. If it is, all we need is to find where its defined and change that.

Is there an app that finds the password of any wifi router? Because some people forgot their password and cannot get on their wifi... I know there's a way for routers named tomson etc. but some people made their own password... Is there an app to get that password? Or do you have to change anything in your system?
don't be dumb... if there is this type of app everyone's wifi network will be used by some random guy with that app

wireless cracker (i think that is what it is called) can get the password of certain wifi's (i think you already found this app), however, do not attempt to use it to get passwords without the consent of the owners of the routers, otherwise it is probably illegal where you are

or just try to stop stealing ... lol
there are legal uses of such an app
By the way, if the router is a thomson, the only app you need is your hands and your eyes, turn upside down the router and the WEP and WPA key is on the label near the barcode

Turn the router around, and hit the reset button. No need for fancy gadgets and latest technology. So simple, even a monkey can do it!

There is an app name "Router password finder" in Google Play (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dashndot.routerpasswords) which supplies default passwords of all type of router. You can take a try.
Then all of them will use every Wifi network ......... and Jam the network ....
But definitely if there's any app i will Tell u .........

You simply set it and it block ads :
What is AdGuard DNS?
AdGuard DNS is a free, privacy-oriented DNS resolution system that blocks tracking, ads and phishing. You can use it instead of your current DNS provider.

You do nothing, it's adguard DNS server that block them directly before they arrive to your phone. That's the 'new' way to adblock, using DNS provider with adblock lists included

Private dns
It only works on WiFi. Not mobile data.
Yes it does: it works on both wifi and mobile networks, as good and seamlessly as Adaway.
No need to root only for adblocking anymore.
If non-rooted, you don't need Blokada or any VPN based adblocker anymore.
Just set:
Settings > Wi-Fi & Internet > Private DNS > dns.adguard.com
and you are good without any additional app.
* Edit, may 2023
Now it's
dns.adguard-dns.com
It blocks ads AND trackers

Just keep in mind that with using this, you cant add any apps or sites to exceptions for when they won't work properly due to the adguard DNS blocking content. Only reason why I use the adguard app (use it on my 2 PCs and phone for an amazing deal) is so I can add exceptions or turn it off easily when needed.

My phone has an uptime of 475h, so the answer is : no
But we probably don't have the same apps installed, it can be a conflict between private dns and an app.
