Can't Enter Download Mode - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
I've recently come across a LG G2 VS980 that I'm trying to root. However, after constantly trying, I can't seem to enter download mode on the phone. Nearly every website I've been to says to hold volume+ while putting in the usb into the phone. And I managed to get into it once, but now I can't seem to get back into it. Every time I hold the volume+ button and put the usb in, the phone vibrates and restarts again and boots into the phone normally. The phone works perfectly fine. It's not rooted and there isn't a custom recovery. I can enter the Factory Data Reset perfectly fine. And I've done a factory wipe on it three times already. I've tried holding the power and volume+ buttons, I've tried turning on and off developer options, I tried deleting everything off the phone, and nothing seems to work. I've read online to download "(VS980) LG G2 AutoRec-Lollipop APK", however, because my phone is not rooted, doesn't it run the risk of being bricked? I just want to be able to enter download mode which seems to be impossible at this point. If I try anything, the phone simply vibrates and boots regular skipping the download mode altogether. Is there anything I can possibly run to fix this? The phone works perfectly fine and it is not rooted. Also it is running 5.0.2.

Autorec will not work without root. Turn on USB/ADB-Debugging in developer options and try to enter download mode again. Btw the timing while pushing Power+VolUp is extremely tricky. 0.1 second too slow and it won't work. If this doesn't help try one of these tipps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63327417&postcount=4
But none of those will be easy.
Good luck!

Grrrr, Why Me! Help

Well I've had my Vibrant for about a month now but have not been in a rush to root because there aren't really any ROMS available yet. I've donated so I'm excited to see what comes about. Any way I decided to go ahead and root today because frankly the bloatware was getting on my nerves. So I rooted the phone basically just flashing the upsate.zip and then flashing recovery via rom manager. Now I'm a bit frustrated because immediately after rooting:
1. My Vibrant is laggy as all hell!
2. Google apps crashes repeatedly
3. My damn market no longer works! Can't download apps via market anymore
4. My Sync is now broken, it says synced but definitely does not sync anything any time anymore.
What gives? Others have obviously had no problems and I'm certain I didn't do anything wrong, I've been rooting and flashing since the days of G1 and have had a Mytouch and most recently a Nexus One. I'm not fantastically versed but I'm no n00b all the same.
Also what's up with the radio? My phone rings and the ringer is low then a few seconds later gets loud also the delay between the time I dial a number and the number rings is pretty big, I've taken two phones and called one to check.
Any way I'm frustrated and unroot is not working, I attempted to unroot but yet remain rooted with all the same headaches.
Some help would be appreciated.
Go ahead and use odin to get back to stock. Yes you will lose your data.

You should be back to stock at this point. Then use this file to get root.

There really isnt much else to do. You dont even need the recovery, yet, but use clockwork through market to get it. Choosing Vibrant as the recovery option. Download the busybox app from market to get the newest one.
unfortunately my phone does not boot into download mode. I've tried holding volume down and power, no dice it just boots up normally. ive also tried holding volume up and power to the same result....And I don't know of any other way to use Odin without download mode. After rooting my phone nothing works properly.

You have to hold volume up and down while holding power. Once the screen goes black release power and continue holding volume up and volume down.
Your other option is with adb to do "adb reboot download" and it will reboot into download mode.
Once you get the hang of holding the volume up and down it's a piece of cake.
try installing one of eugene's ROMs through Clockwork, and see if that fix's anything.
Make sure you have the samsung drivers installed on your computer.
Odin can be tricky, here's my sure fire way that i get into Odin every single time.
DO NOT HAVE YOUR USB PLUGGED IN YET
1) Start odin load your .pit file and rom into PDA
2) Go into stock recovery
3) Now plug in the USB cable, Odin should recognize a phone is connected
4) In recovery select Reboot System
5) Immediately press the Volume Up/Down Button all the way in, (2 clicks)
6) should load the yellow triangle and say download mode plus Odin should recognize it immediately
Okie doke, thanks guys, I went ahead and used Odin to return to get back to stock so I'm going to just root again, I have no idea why things got so screwed up when I rooted and flashed before. Getting into download mode was annoying but this is what worked for me:
1. Turn off phone
2. Plug USB in
3. Wait for green charging screen
3. Hold Volume Up, Volume down, and Power.
5. Let go of power as soon as the screen goes black.
Open Odin and load files then hit start....and back to stock I went.
Thanks again!

[Q] Software Update Softbrick LG G2 D802

I know that there are loads of threads on XDA regarding bricked G2s (and how to fix them), and believe me, I have scoured every one I could find. None of them had the same situation as me. Here it is:
- tried upgrading rooted G2 (d802) to KitKat through PC suite
- on reboot, phone gives repeated "Unfortunately, com.android.systemui has stopped" messages
- this prevents me from doing anything - cannot start developer tools/USB debugging; cannot software factory reset; may as well have a broken screen
- tried booting into recovery - there seems to be no recovery
- I have booted into recovery before the update; I tried using the same method - nothing
- I googled for alternate methods, none of them worked either
- has download mode - what does this enable me to do?
- tried using a 'restore to stock' flashing tutorial on XDA - didn't work
- it is here if anyone was curious
- cannot access through ADB
- TWRP gone
- have no idea how to access through fastboot
Any other options available? Is there any other way to enable USB debugging, trigger fastboot, access the phone through ADB, or factory reset it?

ok well first entering factory reset(or custom recovery)
-before d80220d the key combination to enter factory reset is with phone fully powered off hold volume down+power and when lg logo pops up let go and hold volume down+power
-after d80220d(or any update that includes knock code) the combination was changed(pretty sure it had to do with the fact that on kitkat we used stock recovery to install root and everyone who couldn't get in via adb just had to use button combination which everyone knew) and the new combination with phone fully powered off is to hold volume down+power and when lg logo pops up let go and hold onto volume up+down don't touch power, if you have tried these then you should mention it

You are an absolutely beautiful person. I think I have fallen in love with you. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! I swear I found at least 5 different tutorials and none mentioned this.
If your name doesn't go down in history, the world is cruel and unjust.
Sorry. But thanks. SO MUCH.
Im facing the same problem, wanted to go back stock and had CloudFlexy 2.3 installed. Did the firmware flashing, got stuck with procesesses stopping and couldn't boot into factory reset.
Found this thread and got to factory reset, tried factory reset but now my phone only has android figure with spinning thingy inside of it going on in my screen. ADB wont recognize the phone.. I think i need to flash stock rom or something but not sure how to. Please help, how did you proceed rtswan1211 after getting the factory reset screen?
Edit:
After waiting for 'bout 10mins for something to happen i just tried to reboot the phone and still the same spinning android logo came on. Finally plugged in the USB cable and phone booted up with working software. Had me really worried.

[Q] my tmobile g2 is hardbriked :( help me

such friends have a big problem with my G2 I want meti up the volume on the stock rom kit kat and so we change the audio xml file I saw in a tutorial here in HTCMania, but restarting the phone will stay locked in bootloop where it says tmobile.
then proceeded to do hard reset thinking that would be solved well but after performing hard reset STAYING was still locked.
well I'll have to reinstall the software and told me when I headed to want to put the phone in download mode (off the phone and press Vol + connect usb cable) to my surprise the phone did not enter the download mode. the only thing it does is connect the cable to charge on and get off.
and since then I can not find a way to revive him because I can not install the software, and "NO I HAVE INSTALLED A CUSTOM RECOVERY" so do not'm desperate someone could throw me a light? if somehow you could do enter download mode on the phone in an alternative way?

First i would try getting in to recovery using the hardware keys. Look it up on you tube. Then you should be able to use a back up if you made one.
To get in download mode you need to power off then while powering on hold the vol down key and plug in the usb cable. That will get you in download mode. You shouldn't have to do that though if you have a back up. Your phone isnt bricked?

sorry friend, but is that as explained in the previous post: long press volume + but does not go into download mode, this as locked or not happens.: Llanto:
Jesus Christ.
Press and hold power and volume down until the display shuts off and the LG logo appears. Then, try pressing and holding volume up and volume down until a hard reset option appears. Reset the device and try booting it up. You will lose all data on it, but that's what you get if you're not smart enough to back it all up.

A hard reset will not help if he made changes to the system partition (which it sound like he did). If he has a recovery installed (kind of a weird sentence in the OP) this would take him into the custom recovery though.
@tuberodx7 If all else fails I'm convinced you can get it into download mode if you do it right, something like that should definitely not kill that. From there you can flash a factory image (Search for the return to stock thread in the General forum)... Your device is far from hardbricked, please do your research...
THis is general thread. Post it at Q/A.

Ok, if you're absolutely definitely positively sure you're doing it right and it still doesn't work, you might have to manually reflash some of the partitions... Refer to this thread (and be careful) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582142
(Although you might want to wait for someone to confirm this as I'm no authority on the subject)

Cannot boot even into download mode after changing Fast Dormancy setting

Hi,
I thought I could enter the Hidden Menu and change the Fast Dormancy setting into disabled, so I did it and wanted to reboot my phone. The phone turned off, and was doing its boot up procedure, while it started behaving abnormally. The LG logo popped up for about 5 seconds (so it didn't leave the bootloader), turned off for 10 seconds and then again the whole process repeated. I thought that was a bootloop, so I turned it off, entered Factory Reset menu, chose appropriate options and waited for the reset, but the phone didn't perform the action. Then I tried to get into download mode, but to no avail - the phone kept going with bootloop. I'm still struggling to do this; the only menu I could get into was the Factory Reset one.
Could anyone help me get my phone back into function?
D802, 20G stock
Thanks in advance!
That's weird. I always disable fast dormancy after a reset or a new rom flash and I've never had any issues.
What comes instead of download mode? If nothing, Are you sure you're doing it correctly?
Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds.
Plug the phone into the cable, then press and hold volume up and plug the cable into the computer. That should trigger download mode.
Thank you for your help.
I know that's weird, I've entered Download mode numerous times using the combination that you provided and can't do it this time. The strangest thing actually is that the factory reset menu does show up (though it does nothing), while Download mode does not - it seems to be actually unaffected by using the combination and is still stuck in a bootloop. I have no idea what steps should I take in order to recover my phone.
I forgot to mention that the phone wasn't even rooted then, which makes it even more mysterious...
Ouch! Well what comes up when you enter download mode? Fastboot? Black screen?
If you're still covered by warranty take it for a replacement. I doubt fast dormancy alone has messed up your device. If it truly has, then try booting the phone without a sim card.
Normally when I insert the USB cable with vol up button pressed, the LG logo shows up, then the notification of Download mode and finally the Software Update screen. But this time, only the LG logo shows for about 5 seconds, as if I normally booted it using Power button and does not get me into neither Download nor Fastboot mode.
Well, I took a look at other options in this hidden menu, but still, could it brick that hard even then?
I doubt whether I'm still eligible for a replacement, as the device had been rooted already (though it's not at the moment). The whole process also takes quite a lot of time, which is why I wanted to avoid it. Is there any method to bring it back to life?
I wanted to revive my phone using the method linked with flashing the whole partitions onto my phone, but Ubuntu didn't even notice that any drive was connected...
Am I doing something wrong? I mean e.g. is the combo Vol Up + cable still the same in D80220G? Is there any other way of accessing the phone through my computer? Can I somehow stop this bootloop from continuously happening? Doesn't the fact that I can get into Factory Reset menu help in any way?
Thanks for your help in adavnce!

Stock AT&T phone: no download mode

I've rooted dozens of phones over the years, but I have a G2 which has burned up many hours now and, despite my efforts, is still fully stock AT&T other than a SIM unlock.
LG-G800
Rev 1.0
5.0.2
Kernel 3.4.0
Build LRX22G
Version D80030f
Every amazing one-click root script/app I've tried falls at the same hurdle. The phone simply will not enter download mode. When I manually try to enter download mode (power off, volume up, attach USB), I end up at the battery charge status screen. In this state, no USB device appears to be exposed, unrecognized or otherwise. Using adb reboot recovery simply reboots the phone as normal, starting with the LG logo, then the AT&T logo. I guess this is what all these scripts are doing because the behavior is the same and they all fail because they give up trying to connect at this stage.
The only references to this state I can find online are from people who have been rooted, installed a custom recovery and then taken an OTA update. That is not my problem. This phone has always been stock. I started the whole process with a factory reset, so I doubt there's any point in doing that again. I've even found references to shorting pins on the main board to do the hardest of hard resets. It's hard to see how that could help in my case, but all advice is welcome!
Well you probably cannot enter download mode due to the fact you aren't pressing the right buttons. You need to power off the phone, hold volume up, and while holding plug in the USB.

Yes, I did make a typo in my original post, but be assured that I've tried every combination. The volume control does not work very well on this phone*, so there's a chance that could be stopping me from getting into download mode manually. It does not explain why the USB commands do not successfully boot the phone into download mode.
*I've been living with the bad volume control, but I've just ordered a replacement part on the off-chance that this is what is stopping me from rooting.
Since you are rooted try nuking download mode then reflash it.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
Nope, I'm not rooted because every method of rooting I've come across requires download mode in some way. Getting root is really what this thread is all about. The phone is still fully and stubbornly stock right now.
