Buzzing Sound - Zuk Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
A couple of months after I bought zuk z1, the sound just disappeared for notifications and when music was played through speaker, the speaker would make buzzing noise and it would fluctuate. Also, the sound level would fluctuate without even me touching the volume buttons. Sometimes, when I decreased the volume and increased it, it wouldn't increase and if I decrease it to zero, then even when I would increase it to full I wouldn't hear anything.
Flashing nuclearom fixed everything except the buzzing sound. To get rid of buzzing, I installed Viper4Android but instead of fixing it has brought back all the problems that existed earlier.
Also, the problem is only with phone speaker. The headphones and everything work fine.
Please help me!! I don't think it is a hardware issue because all these problems turn up on their own and they get fixed on their own for a time being.

Seems like you have nearly the same problem with the speaker:http://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z1/general/low-speaker-sound-t3500648
I think the sound problem could be an hardware issue

I said it's not a hardware fault because sometimes when I would clear data and cache of Audio FX and force stop it, everything would come back to normal. However it worked most of the times but not always.

And without audio fx? Did you wipe system, data every time you install other roms?

When I would force stop audio fx the sound would become normal. Yes. I follow the normal procedure before flashing roms which includes wiping everything.
I forgot to mention one more thing. The ringtones would work when there was no notification sound. And after I unlocked the bootloader, the notification sound problem was gone but the buzzing remained. I know it sounds freaky.
And if it's hardware or speaker problem the buzzing shouldn't be there at low volume. But in my phone, it's always there. In my experience, I feel like it's a software bug. When i listen to some song and it buzzes, I can notice that the volume increases and decreases on it's own as if the system is trying to create a balance.

HISS during normal operation.

I have searched the thread for other similar issues but mine seems to be unique?
Occasionally if I put the rear speaker to my ear I can hear a hissing sound, and more often than not when it's doing that I get no audio notifications for incoming texts or email.
Others have reported hissing when listening with headphones that lasts for one or two seconds after a system sound, but with my handset it last for a couple of minutes and prevents other sounds from coming to the surface!
Anyone else having this problem?
Any known cause/solution?
no one getting the same issue then?

i got the same issue , if u use custom roms that tweaked and lowerd volume then it will be solved but still have a little hisss
what rom do you use?

Sound too quiet, try this.

Hi all,
I've always felt that when playing music on my DHD that it's too quiet, when I've listened to music through my headphones I would say it's acceptable however when I've plugged my DHD into a HiFi or into my stereo in my car I could crank the volume to full control without it been deafening. I happen to find a fix yesterday by accident, I had my DHD plugged into my car stereo and the phone rang, I pulled the audio cable out and answered the phone, when I was done I put the cable back in and immediately I was like WTF just happened now, the music was much louder than what it was before I answered the phone, I would say it was about 30% louder.
I tested my theory by stopping the music and unplugging the cable, plugged the cable back in and started the music, while it was playing I opened the phone and simply dialled any random number and ended the call immediately, when it went back to the music it was most certainly much louder. I've tried it several times now and every time it makes it much louder than what it was before I make a call, I can now no longer turn the stereo full blast as it is simply too loud, just by turning it up to half way I would say it's the equivalent of what it was before when I had it turned up to the maximum.
I'm using Poweramp and I don't know if it's got anything to do with that, I will test it with the built in music player and see what it does. I originally downloaded Poweramp as I thought that the built in music player may be the problem.
i'll repet what you do and post some results... really want a louder volumen in headphones. I plugged my headphone in a Wildfire and it's incredible louder, no talking about an ipod! last week in a party i was ashamed when my friend put off his $50 cell phone and i plugged mine on stereo, so low volume....
wtf, that's true.. really don't understand what the phone turns on!! probably the same thing that volume boost turns on!!
Aha that actually works

Good news, it must be a software bug with the volume control.
works here too.. atleast on poweramp and soundcloud, didnt hear any difference on spotify

let's hope someone let this bug permanently turned on, with no call trick...
Haha! Tried it myself, and it works! Awesome!
I found using shazzam or sound hound while music was playing caused it to go louder. Seems to be when the mic is initialised. Noticed this two days ago

Interesting find.
I've noticed a couple of ROMS which suggest better audio volume by 20%.
For example this one. (Speaker Boost +20%)
So somehow, somewhere the bug or issue has been fixed or improved.

Not really, i'm using that rom right now, and what it makes is improve SPEAKER volume, not from headphone. I made my tests in Android Revolution rom and can confirm that headphone is as quiet as stock rom, and it is improved by the "call trick"!
Thanks for sharing! I was experimenting a bit, and it seems like the simplest way to boost the volume is to make a call while music is already playing. The call MUST connect though, or the volume will revert to normal levels. Tested with Winamp.
Maybe have one of the dev's ask to look into this.
If this is different from the already increased speaker volume output, it probably is a bug that can be fixed / feature that can be 'un-featured'
works fine
I had similar experience with my laptop. When listening a mp3 file, the sound coming out from my laptop seems like no effects, standard sound without bass and treble effect. Have to play a movie file first together and stop the.movie make the song hear with the effect.
I believe this issue coming from my sound driver. Using another OS in same laptop. The sound play normally with no issue.
For our Android, it's about the sound driver too?
well well, i just noticed that in the Android Revolution 4 (leaked gingerbread based), the sound is improved by default, no needing the call workaround, looks like HTC fixed the strange bug for the next version...
i just wanted to share!
edit: if someone could try to confirm it, i'll appreciate! =o)

I had the same problem, go to the Market and download "Volume Ace".
MarkieSA, you're an accident hero.
I noticed sometimes my DHD volume suddenly were loud . If I restart the phone, it will go low . I couldn't find out how to make it loud again until reading your post. I'm using PowerAmp too . I think it plays a role in this case.
Thank you for this great finding.
Really useful little trick for 2.2 users, especially for peeps using stock ROM's without the 20% boost via custom kernels. I had tried some of the volume boost type apps before rooting but all they do is invert the phase of one of the stereo channels. All this does is give you a very tinny mono output which is no use to say the least.

Weird Audio Issue

I've been having a weird audio issue with my Nexus 7 and was wondering if anyone else was having it. I search before starting this thread and couldn't find anything similar, which leads me to believe the answer is 'no', but thought I would ask anyway.
So my N7 was one of the first to be released. For a couple months I've had no major issues. A little screen lifting, but not enough to make me send it back. Some issues with the screen (what looks like burn in, but goes away) which has been heavily reported, but again, I can live with it. Both of those issues are well known and common, but this one just started up.
Every so often, when my N7 has been sitting idle and in standby mode for a while and I unlock it, I hear a "click" sound from the speaker. It normally makes that sound, but on occasion it sounds weird and clipped. When this happens, I lose audio. The only way to regain it is to either reboot the device, or manually lower the sound to zero, wait a few seconds, and then raise it up again. The latter method usually works, but once in a while I have to do it multiple times before the audio is restored. When the audio stops, it doesn't matter if it's the built in speakers or headphones - nothing.
This problem seems to only occur right after I wake it up. In other words, if I'm using it actively and I have sound, the sound works fine.
Again, this problem only started occurring about a month or so ago, and is only sporadic. At first, I thought it might have something to do with a new app I downloaded, but I eliminated that variable.
It's not a major problem, but it does get annoying every so often.
My N7 is stock firmware with a custom kernel (Motley) and rooted (obviously) with CWM recovery.
The logs don't indicate any issues. And since the audio comes back with me turning it off/on (usually), it seems more like a software issue.
Anyone else experiencing something similar?
Also, when the sound is working properly, it sounds great. No static or distortion or anything like that.
I have the same problem, at first i thought it was because of the kernels so i switch kernels from stock to motley then now i am on clemsyn. I do not know whether it is a software or hardware problem because my speakers sound perfectly alright, except the symptoms which you described.
My case is then sometimes when i unlock it, the normal click sound on unlock might be distorted and then for a period of time there will be no sound. The quick way to solve it is to plug in a headphone and then pull it back out, this will get the sound back immediately OR i can just wait for a while and the sound will be back. Again because of the speaker not having any other distortion during normal music playback, this might actually be a software problem, but it seems not many pple have documented this behaviour so hardware problem is also likely.

I think it could be a hardware defect with ours. Since you are the only other person to report the exact same symptoms, it seems to be rare. In my case, it occasionally happens even with the headphones in, so I don't think it's a speaker issue - more likely a sound card problem. If it was software, I think it would be much more commonly reported. Oh well.... Weird that it only started happening about a month or two after I owned it.
juz an update on my nexus 7 audio issue, i recently just flash franco kernel and the audio issue seemed to go away completely. i amnot sure whether its the overclocking or the undervolting that caused the problem but i am glad it is gone. Juz FYI.
I have a similar situation where the sound stops working randomly. It's rare, but maybe once a day. The volume buttons remain high but there is no sound. I have to reboot for the sound to come back. I am on Kaos Droid 3.8 Beta, with the Clemsyn Elite Battery Saving kernel.

Then I have no idea, sorry. My other guess would be is that you're accidentally pressing the volume key in you pocket or something without realizing it. You could try factory resetting the phone. It can sometimes fox weird issued like yours.

have u check the adaptive option under the settings->sound->adapt sound?
Could it be that the adaptive sound is processing at certain point of time trying to give you the best sound that its think of?
Yes, I have experienced this under the following conditions:
-Phone just purchased, unrooted, completely stock. Playing music with PowerAmp with and without the EQ/Tone/Limit features, also happened with stock music app. The effect nearly blew out my eardrums once, but it happened several times. Music would play and very suddenly there would be a violent increase in sound, almost as if an EQ crashed. Sound went back to normal after I pressed the volume rocker in either direction. I am not so sure that this has to do with Adaptive Sound because I remember experiencing the same problem before and after i configured it. Overall, incredibly annoying and dangerous for my ears.
-Phone rooted, Viper4Android installed as a user app. The same problem happens using PowerAmp, Xenoamp and stock music app, but the increase is not so violent (not sure why, yet). Marginally tolerable, but still very annoying.
I have not found a fix yet, but still keeping an eye open.
That being said, my phone has music playing almost all day every day so I probably encounter the problem more often than others. I use earbuds, headphones and my car stereo. There is a Droid-Life.com review that mentions the issue and credits it to the phone's audio jack: http://www.droid-life.com/2013/10/01/samsung-galaxy-note-3-review/
See the subsection for Audio Jack Issues. Here is an excerpt:
"Then, after a few minutes without touching anything while at full volume, the volume just explodes and you are left deafened by the surprise volume attack."
I would be interested to see if anyone reports the problem when playing music via the phone's speaker.

[Update] Looks like this is not an isolated issue. My friend's wife also facing the same problem and she sent in to reflash the unit at Samsung Care Center and the problem just disappear. My friend told me factory reset doesn't help though.
I have exactly the same issue you have. Same XXUBMJ1 ans using the device for a month now. Unknown and just reported to Samsung and was asked to walk in to get advice.

speaker is REALLY LOW only during phone calls

hey there,
I use speakerphone a lot while talking on the phone and had no problem with it.
one day it stopped producing the loud volume it used to and it's REALLY LOW since then. As if it's not on speaker at all.
there's NO problem with the volume while playing/watching media; NO problem while talking on the phone with my ear near the phone or with an ear piece. ONLY WHILE IT'S ON SPEAKER.
1- it's NOT connected to any update (it started on 7.0 and yesterday i updated to 7.1.1 hoping it will help, but nothing has changed)
2- my 6P in not rooted
3- it has stock rom
4- MAYBE it's related to an app i installed called "DRUPE" which affects the phone, but it didn't start immediately and didn't get fixed after remiving this app, so i can't be sure.
5- i've tried SAFE MODE, but it didn't solve the problem
6- i've tried looking for a solution in the settings but nothing there affects the volume of the speakerphone or limits it.
7- i've wiped the cache - NOTHING
the fact that the speaker works fine during media playing shows me that it's not a hardware problem, but YOU ARE THE EXPERTS' so please help me.
