After a month of using my Atrix 4G, a friend of my brother bought one for himself... only to realize his fingerprint scanner's faulty. After close inspection, I see that it's not a hardware problem, but just a cosmetic problem. At the power button, the hinge is uneven due to the tape (yes, the TAPE) that covers the sensor. And so I thought, 'could it be replaced instead of the whole panel' because if I rub on the sensor hard enough, it would actually register the print.
This is something I've found out; try it at your own risk - or enjoyment - as of now I can't find the right type of tape to replace the sensor's... so it wouldn't block the scanner or not registering the heat.
Whoa!!! Hold on there.
Unless someone has actually applied a layer of tape to your Atrix, there is no "Tape" on the fingerprint sensor that can be replaced.
Please do not even think about trying to dissassemble the fingerprint sensor. The black surface is not "Tape" in the sense that you are imaging. It absolutely cannot be peeled away and replaced.

I have effectively set up the finger print scanner and it works 99% of the time first time. However, Whenever I get out of the shower for about an hour afterwards the fingerprint scanner just doesn't work at all no matter what I do. What could be causing this? Is it maybe my body temperature? Or maybe my finger changes slightly while being in the shower enough to make the reader think iit's not me?
The scanner doesn't find the dirt at your fingertip it detected while registering the finger prints.
Serious: You skin extends while taking a shower; the longer the shower and the higher the temperature, the more your fingerprints deviate from the registered ones.
That could be the reason.

Seems legit, Yet I never have problems with the fingerprint scanner after taking a shower.

Sees fair enough, just a tad annoying that's all.
another possible cause
It could also be that the shower dries your hands out and it takes a while for the natural oils in your hands to build back up. This happens to me at work. I am a nurse and I use fingerprint scanners to remove medications from machines. I have really dry skin and when my hands get dry from all of the hand washing the fingerprint scanners won't read my prints unless I use lotion or breathe on my finger first to make it moist.
So I been wondering, since I use the scanner exclusively to navigate, is the scanner actually intended for such constant use, or is this some kind of hack by the manufacturers? And what kind of lifetime does the scanner have under constant use?
Capacitive fingerprint readers are small arrays of capacitors, much like a very densely packed touchscreen. There isn't much to break there, but they do lose accuracy if scratched (though not as much as you might think). The capacitors aren't actually directly on the sensor, they are a bit underneath the glassy surface, so it would probably take decades for it to wear out and stop working. Even with everyday use, they will definitely outlast some other components.
Does anyone have any tips on using the fingerprint sensor with the lifeproof case? Is works 1 out of 20 times. I was thinking of just taking the film of it but they it would void warrant or anything like that am I correct?
Any updates on this? My fiance just got a lifeproof case and the fingerprint scanner wont work at all for her. Works fine for me for some reason though.

Yeah it doesn't work if it doesn't sit flush, I ended up taking the plastic film of it.
For anyone who worries about scratching their shiny new phone and applies a screen protector then take note that in doing so that the motion Gestures will stop working.
I applied a glass screen protector to my phone tonight and although it does not cover the section where the cameras and soli chip are located, after I did the motion Gestures stopped working and the detection for face unlock was hit and miss.
Once I removed the screen protector it all started working again. Not sure if a plastic protector might work better.
If anyone has any ideas or experience please share.
Mind divulging what brand screen protector you used? I grabbed a cheap Pleson 3-Pack on Amazon this week to use until my IntelliGlass one arrives in November. Curious to see if it causes the same issue.

I just put a glass MP-Mall off Amazon on mine. It's got a gap on the top with two horns.
Everybody has been hating on the accuracy of the gestures, but it's been pretty reliable for me.
After I put the screen protector on I'm pretty sure it affected it. It doesn't respond as well, but then I question whether I waved correctly or not. [emoji2357].

The one I bought from Amazon is branded OMOTION. Definitely the protector because I removed it last night and motion sense started to work again. I put on another this morning and it's stopped working. I have ordered another brand from Amazon to test.
If anyone finds one which works please let me know.
Got my Pixel 4 a few hours ago. I installed a PLESON tempered glass screen protector before I even turned the thing on. It does not cover the entirety of the glass, as expected, because of the curved edges.
Face Unlock works well, and reaching for the phone is detected properly when the ambient display is on. The only thing I've found to not work 100% reliably so far are the gestures for skipping music tracks. First of all, the app has to support it. So the gestures straight up don't work in Shuttle Music Player (my personal favorite) but will work with Google Play Music. Moving your hand from left to right is supposed to skip to the next song while the reverse motion is supposed to restart the song and/or go back to the previous song. I've found that when doing these gestures, only the right to left motion (restarting / going to the previous song) works, whereas skipping the track does not. Additionally, you can see towards the top of the screen, underneath the earpiece, that a bar will light up and it follows the movement of your hand.
So the PLESON screen protector will work for now, but I have an Intelliglass on the way, which should hopefully perform properly.
I have not heard of Intelliglass protectors before, just googled and found that and also intelliarmour. Both seem to cover the whole phone so I assume for the Pixel 4 it will also cover the soli chip. Will be interesting to hear how you get on. I suspect it may stop it working. I have found my protector overlaps the screen and covers about 3mm of the notch, I assume that is what is causing the motion sense to not work. With no protector it works fine.

Sorry, gonna trim this a bit. But only for one reason and that's the screen protector debate. I always used those things until I didn't. I would drop the phone and they would shatter and I was .. omg thank goodness for the screen protector. And then I thought hmm.. let me see. Did a little research and the reviews were mixed. Until I dropped the device without one and .. nothing. No cracks no glass break no nothin'. I never got another one and I've never broken a screen with a drop either. Now don't jinx me lol but I don't think they do a thing. I did get a fabric case for my P3 and 3a and they work well with minor obstructions.
I've not ordered the $40 fabric for the P4 yet but I probably will at some point. I like to get the feel of the device before I do that and I try to be uber careful until that time. But just a few quick thoughts that don't mean much other than my own.

Yeah, I've considered rocking my phone without a protector in the past, especially because I'm usually very careful with my phones, but there have been times where my phone my phone was knocked out of my hand by some idiot or something and I just like the added protection (if there is any). At the very least when I go to sell the phone the original screen is in nearly pristine condition.
As far as cases go, I really enjoyed the Spigen Thin Fit I had on my G7 so I'll be picking one of those up as soon as it's released in white. In the mean time, I snagged a Spigen Liquid Crystal just for basic protection. Although, the idea of rocking it naked is tempting. It feels very nice in my hands.
I also have the OMOTON brand from Amazon and the face unlock works ok, however the gestures to skip songs in Spotify rarely work. I will try to remove the protector later and see if that for sure is the issue.
I discovered that if I do the gestures with a phone off to the side it's not very repeatable but when I have the phone directly in front of me it works most of the time with the screen protector still on. I am thinking the screen protector prevents it from working off to the side as well. My wife just got a pixel 4XL as well and it works off to the side.
it would be nice to have some protection on the rear square that the camera's sit behind...i'm not sure how it would affect the camera performance, but once you get a little scratch on that surface, you'll have a camera that struggles to pull focus on close objects.. thoughts?
Motion Sense hardly works without a screen protector. Turn it off to save the paltry battery life, and protect your screen
