Using SlimPort to connect V20 via HDMI to monitor - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I don't know if anybody else does it that way but I actually use my LG V20 like a computer. I did the same with my LG G4 using SlimPort.
The V20 needed USB-C so I got that.
However, I have a pet peeve.. both of them would initially show 2K resolution (2560x1440) on my monitor. Then it would downscale to 640x480 and everything got fuzzy on the screen.
I would have to take it to the Samsung television (1080p) and it would "reset" then I'd go back to my 2K monitor and hook it up and it'd show beautifully until I turn it off then it goes back to 640x480.
Anybody having that problem?

The adapter is XtremPro.. I also have a Mokin.. both are the same in terms of performance. All the cables are the good ones but phone doesn't seem to charge with any of the cables I have including the factory, but I still have to have cable otherwise it won't run.

I've got this working on my V20 currently with this adapter
Select Series USB-C HDMI® Multiport Adapter from Monoprice (can't submit a link yet)
Everything looks huge and ugly, but it works with a mouse and keyboard. Just wish there was a way to keep it forced in landscape mode.

This is what I bought, no issues yet. Does not support fast charging.

I think all you really need is a USB-C to HDMI adapter. I don't think slimport would work since its based on a micro USB connector.

Hello ,
Can you please tell me , your phone do not fast charge when you attach it to tv over hdmi ,or it do not charge at all?
I read on different forums that phone mdo not charge at all when hdmi adapter is connected .
Does the v20 charge when hdmi is attached? I do not need fast charge , I just it to charge

It charges, but doesn't fast charge

HTC ONE OTG not supported/MHL playing up

Any info on this would be well appreciated.
Don't know if this is already covered somewhere but I can't find it. I'm well gutted about this, Just tried watching a film on HTC ONE with OTG cable and it doesn't work. I get a warning notification saying " unable to charge device, please use supported charger " Gutted. I thought this would of been covered since the one-x supported OTG when it got 4.1 update. Also, don't know if it's related but the MHL (an official HTC 1) isn't working properly either as it did on my one-x. It wil be playing fine for 20/30 seconds and then cuts off for 10 seconds then comes back on. It's does this repeatedly which makes what ever your trying to watch - unwatchable.

It supports OTG
Haven't tried mhl, but otg works fine here.
Tried it with my memory sticks and fiio dac.

Seem to be working now. Must of been the memory card adapter I tried, tried another one and ok now but still getting error notification " unable to charge device, please use the supported charger " Don't know what that's all about. Keyboard and mouse work fine with OTG, never tried them before.

Definitely something wrong with MHL.just tried again with official HTC adapter and flawless on one-x, unstable on the ONE.

Isn't the one purportedly MHL 2.0? Maybe the adapter needs to be different...

I just tried MHL on my One using the official HTC M490 adapter (NOT the M500 which I think won't work). I have no problems at all with MHL. It is stable. I don't know what difference MHL 2.0 makes, but I did notice that the phone seems to be capable of outputting something different to MHL out, vs what is on the phone screen.
For example, and I have no idea why, I seem to have a free copy of Thor on the phone under the HTC Watch application (freebie?). I found that when I choose Thor as the film, the phone screen is showing a synopsis, while the TV is showing a still frame from the movie. However, when actually playing the film, both are showing the same thing. Nevertheless it is a good indication that dual screen gaming applications may be possible for example.
Also tried the OTG using a Samsung usb adapter. No problems functionally but I can confirm the misleading error message about not being able to charge the phone. No problems accessing the USB storage though and Gallery automatically will find pictures on an externally mounted SD card.
HTC M500 adapter has 12 pins and was the adapter for HTC tablets (Flyer and Jetstream). The majority of connectors use 5 pins, except Samsung (SIII and Note 2) that uses 11 pin, which allows for MHL and USB OTG simultaneously.
Regarding MHL 2.0, it has the ability to pass 1080p video at 60Hz (up from 30Hz of MHL 1st generation) and charge up to twice as fast. Samsung SIV has it, but I haven't find anything official that shows HTC One also has it, or for the need of a different adapter.
All the MHL adaptors i've seen (mine included- Cablesson) have a micro USB slot so you plug in your charger* to that, then the device to your phone, and it charges as it outputs.
Are you all doing that, or trying to output with no charger attached.
*Mains charger

I have no problems but to confirm the adapter won't even start-up if you don't connect the charger...it is totally ignored. I am assuming the original poster either has a bad USB/MHL port on the phone, or the adapter is slightly out of tolerance with its connections hence working on some phones and not others.
I've bought an adapter on ebay for my One X. Besides ths usb charging port having issues, it messed my One X usb port - it only worked with the adapter pluged in. I had to reset One X. So, mhl adapters can be really a mess.

First day with phone today so briefly trying lots of things, I had pre-bought cheap ebay MHL adaptor and tried it with a few youtube videos seems to work OK (confirm you must have a charger micro-usb MHL).
It did give about 20 secs of white snow interference at start almost as though it was tuning in channel but steady after that.
More investigations to follow I think.

can you link me to the one you purchased if all worked fine please
if anyone else has a 100% working MHL to HDMI can you post which one and where to purchase.

Sucks that I don't have mine yet. I have two different MHL adapters I could try.
I just experienced the original "HTC AC M490" MHL-Adpater with my HTC One (Stock ROM).
It was working straightaway, but the device display as well as the TV screen where a little bit slow and choppy.
Is it possible to change some settings (like resolution or frame rate) to improve the performance?
THX
Edit: Is it MHL 2.0 ? (Regarding to this thread it seems to be only MHL 1.0)?

No, it isn't.
The S4 will be the first MHL 2.0 spec device.
Is there any way to set the output resolution manually to 720p?

With a custom kernel you can do this. Flar2 did this for the one XL, I see he's starting to migrate over here.
Sent from my HTC One X
Yes obviously plugged the charger in aswell with the MHL. The picture is perfect. It just play's for 20/30 seconds then cuts out for a couple and just keeps doing that. Even though the OTG works I still get the error triangle in the notification bar, which I don't on my ONE-X, but I can put up with that.

Continuum Doc - alternative options

I thought it can make sense to list here alternative options to use the continuum feature. Here is what I use:
- Aukey USB-C to HDMI adapter
- Supremery BT Keyboard within Touchpad
Good to see alternatives are working fine
Monoprice USB-C to HDMI adapter: works for video, but flaky connection. I also don't get any audio output.
Aukey USB-C to VGA adapter: the phone recognizes a USB device is connected, but doesn't work.
Microsoft Display Dock: Works well without issue of course. However, a few comments - it doesn't work without a power connection. It also doesn't like the Google dual-port USB-C charger and refuses to power up from that (despite the Google charger being capable of 5V / 3A just like the Microsoft one).
Works without issues with Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for Macbook 12 Retina. And does not need necessarily current.
Continuum works great with the "Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter" too, sound and vision go to the TV/Monitor and phone turns into Trackpad. Just like using the dock but less hassle and wires.
I also tried my Roku3, it works but can be a little flaky
It dosn't work with XCSOURCE USB-C 56k ohm to HDMI /USB 3.1 Multiport Adapter for MacBook LT11
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311536382296
USB port works great...flash drive and keyboard works smooth...BUT HDMI dosn't work at all
Everytime when HDMI cable is inserted phone throw an error with dosn't recognized USB...
Hello,
I also bought the Aukey -C USB to HDMI adapter.
But on 2 Samsung tv , I have problems of disconnection and resolution.
If anyone can help me ....
Thank you in advance
i bought vtin vs1-vvc9h from amazon. Video works.. But i could not make audio to work.
I also bought vicTsing mx-vs1-PCL005B from amazon too. And video worked but audio did not.
I know audio works on ms hd500 with same monitor and cables
The Microsoft wireless Display adaptor v2 works well in continuum mode unless you use 5GHz wifi, in which case it is extremely poor, sound and display stutters like there is no tomorrow.
My Surface pro 2 (normal extended display) has the same issues connecting to it with 5GHz wifi used.
So in short, connect to your internet with a 2.4GHz wifi AP if you intend to use The Microsoft wireless Display adaptor.
I'm quite tempted to get the dock now as one of my office PCs is about to have a catastrophic HHD fail and continuum will kill several birds with a single stone.

Some people on reddit used this and it worked. Can someone confirm?
I have a LG 42LA660s Smart TV, with Miracast enabled. I just connected my phone to a wireless display, and the Continuum works. It is not flawless but I am satisfied with it.

With the coming of the new Macbook with USB-C, there are now quite a few new and cost effective alternatives on the market. I recently bought an unbranded dongle/dock thing which is advertised as to be used with the new Macbooks. It has a USB-C connector on one end, with a USB-A port, HDMI-out port, and USB-C charging port on the other. Works really well, got it for about 1100 INR / 17.50 USD
My display dock HD 500 with a lumia 950 does only view 720p on my full HD TV. Is there any chance to force 1080p output?
I'm gonna check this tomorrow on work where mine Lumia950 and HD500 are and a Dell 24" FHD screen.
Works fine with my Surface Go tablet and LG FHD 55" television. Surface Go with USB-C kabel and LG-tv with HDMI.
And also my Lumia950 works with it on my LG-tv or at work on HP 24".

Reliable HDMI CONNECTOR

I've tried a couple of devices that claim to connect V20 to tv by wired usb c to HDMI connector. They work for a while then the picture is lost or the phone itself freezes up. About the longest play I've gotten successfully is an hour but usually something goes wrong within 15 minutes.*
The phone has been out over 6 months now so I thought someone may have found a really dependable HDMI connector? I don't mind the lack of power in because I can always change batteries but phone should be able to play through HDMI long enough to watch one movie. That's all I really need hut I don't want to have to screw around with it 10 times to watch one movie.
Thanks so much for your help!
I've been wanting to make use of this feature, but haven't extensively yet. I have though gotten to make fair use of a micro-USB to HDMI adapter. A few trouble spots come to mind here.
Sounds like you're powering the adapter/phone from an external power source? How good is that power source? My micro-USB to HDMI was distinctly less reliable when plugged in since I was merely powering it from a normal USB port. Try running it entirely from the phone's battery. If this works better then it could be you really need a higher power source when using the adapter.
How good is your HDMI cable? Depending on how strongly the phone/adapter drives the HDMI signal, a lower quality cable could break the camel's back.
I've been running into a different bit of trouble with USB-C to HDMI adapters. I've found several of these, but whenever they've got a USB-C pass-through, the pass-through is strictly for power and does not carry the USB signals. The MyDP specification allows for USB3 to be passed through if 1 or 2 pairs are used for the HDMI signal, but allows for USB2 to be passed through no matter how many pairs are used for the HDMI signal. There are adapters which also include USB-A port(s), yet none which include an external USB-C with the USB signals. Grr!
I use C to HDMI not micro usb. V20 doesn't use micro usb. It uses slimport. I have one adapter which allows simultaneous charging and one strictly slimport C to HDMI. Both behave the same way. I have a high quality 2.5 foot HDMI wire.
Power source was Samsung tv usb powered output 1 amp. Point is I have the same issue with pure slimport and no charging.
The one that allows simultaneous charging does in fact charge and work but always craps out but so does the slimport C to HDMI.
Hmm, entertaining what you find when you do research. I suspect the V20 is using the "MyDP" specification, which is the official specification name behind "Slimport". Seems there are at least two other video out methods for USB-C.
I haven't done enough with the video-out feature of my V20 to have much experience yet. With a V10 whenever an adapter was plugged in without external power there were no problems, but when an adapter with external power was plugged in video wasn't reliable.
I'm interested in reading if you find out anything.

Sorry I haven't tried, but its seems to connect smoother the a wifi dongle.
does anyone know if there's a compatible dongle for the V20 with not only hdmi but also power input and usb host?
Happening to me too - Any suggestions
Your situation's description fits my problem exactly. I have a USB C to HDMI that was vouched as working by several V20 owners. I plug it into my Dell monitor to play games on a bigger screen. It works well for a while, then disconnects and popup on my screen says something like, "LG Bridge has stopped working do you want to exit?". Once this happens, it's almost impossible to get the V20 to share the screen again. It's not a hub, just a USB C (male) to HDMI (female).

Connect TV through HDMI cable to play games!

Hi! I got my new OP5 and I'm on the last version of FreedomOS.
I'd like to play some emulated games on my TV through HDMI cable in order to have the lowest lag possible.
I tried to put a USB - C / HDMI USB-A USB-C (charger) but it doesn't work...
Can you help me?
Thanks!

It's my second OP since the 3T and at the time I didn't need that feature
It's not possible, use chromecast
Negative. I asked customer support. The only way to connect is wirelessly. 1+ doesn't have MHL support.

Can I use "regular" USB-C -> HDMI cable instead of DEXpad? Which one?

Hi guys, is there a way to mirror the phone's screen to other display (let it be a monitor or TV) using USB-C->HDMI cable? Does it matter what cable to buy? Can you recommend one? Are there any caveats to this? Do I need to set the phone somehow or install some app?
Thanks a lot
It will just work from my experience...
I've also bought this thing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078X9N26D/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It works as dex station if connected to power supply and as hdmi if not.
The only bug for this is that it slowly discharges your phone even if it's connected to power...
it works, you don't need a Dex pad anymore.
I believe any usb c to HDMI will work, but I would recommend using a wireless charger with it.
Probably better off just getting the dex station cause either way you go it would be the same amount of money cause I wouldn't recommend going cheap
I know it's ridiculous to ask; but would a NIntendo Switch Dock actually work? Considering it's similar, and the board can be taken to a Very small case, essentially, a mini dock
