Continuum Doc - alternative options - Microsoft Lumia 950/950 XL

I thought it can make sense to list here alternative options to use the continuum feature. Here is what I use:
- Aukey USB-C to HDMI adapter
- Supremery BT Keyboard within Touchpad

Good to see alternatives are working fine

Monoprice USB-C to HDMI adapter: works for video, but flaky connection. I also don't get any audio output.
Aukey USB-C to VGA adapter: the phone recognizes a USB device is connected, but doesn't work.
Microsoft Display Dock: Works well without issue of course. However, a few comments - it doesn't work without a power connection. It also doesn't like the Google dual-port USB-C charger and refuses to power up from that (despite the Google charger being capable of 5V / 3A just like the Microsoft one).

Works without issues with Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for Macbook 12 Retina. And does not need necessarily current.

Continuum works great with the "Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter" too, sound and vision go to the TV/Monitor and phone turns into Trackpad. Just like using the dock but less hassle and wires.
I also tried my Roku3, it works but can be a little flaky

It dosn't work with XCSOURCE USB-C 56k ohm to HDMI /USB 3.1 Multiport Adapter for MacBook LT11
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311536382296
USB port works great...flash drive and keyboard works smooth...BUT HDMI dosn't work at all
Everytime when HDMI cable is inserted phone throw an error with dosn't recognized USB...

Hello,
I also bought the Aukey -C USB to HDMI adapter.
But on 2 Samsung tv , I have problems of disconnection and resolution.
If anyone can help me ....
Thank you in advance

i bought vtin vs1-vvc9h from amazon. Video works.. But i could not make audio to work.
I also bought vicTsing mx-vs1-PCL005B from amazon too. And video worked but audio did not.
I know audio works on ms hd500 with same monitor and cables

The Microsoft wireless Display adaptor v2 works well in continuum mode unless you use 5GHz wifi, in which case it is extremely poor, sound and display stutters like there is no tomorrow.
My Surface pro 2 (normal extended display) has the same issues connecting to it with 5GHz wifi used.
So in short, connect to your internet with a 2.4GHz wifi AP if you intend to use The Microsoft wireless Display adaptor.
I'm quite tempted to get the dock now as one of my office PCs is about to have a catastrophic HHD fail and continuum will kill several birds with a single stone.

Some people on reddit used this and it worked. Can someone confirm?

I have a LG 42LA660s Smart TV, with Miracast enabled. I just connected my phone to a wireless display, and the Continuum works. It is not flawless but I am satisfied with it.

With the coming of the new Macbook with USB-C, there are now quite a few new and cost effective alternatives on the market. I recently bought an unbranded dongle/dock thing which is advertised as to be used with the new Macbooks. It has a USB-C connector on one end, with a USB-A port, HDMI-out port, and USB-C charging port on the other. Works really well, got it for about 1100 INR / 17.50 USD

My display dock HD 500 with a lumia 950 does only view 720p on my full HD TV. Is there any chance to force 1080p output?

I'm gonna check this tomorrow on work where mine Lumia950 and HD500 are and a Dell 24" FHD screen.

Works fine with my Surface Go tablet and LG FHD 55" television. Surface Go with USB-C kabel and LG-tv with HDMI.
And also my Lumia950 works with it on my LG-tv or at work on HP 24".

Some really interesting ones! Prices are reasonable.

wow some really nice looking extras, im glad they decided to add them this time around, i believe the desktop dock shown also has an AUX output in the back to play music on large speakers, however if this is true, i dont see an AUX input on the dock, so it must stream the audio thru microusb, and then out through AUX, very interesting, but seems likely, since the implementation of MHL!
Nice find, thanks.
From what I've heard it sounds like Samsung are not supplying the MHL or USB OTG adapters in the retail box, which is a great shame and rather poor really. Can't say I'm surprised, because Samsung have tended to follow this practice with their previous flagships also.
^ Correct, MHL cable listed on Clove website as an accessory...
Let me ask this. This is an MHL port, meaning I can plug in a regular mini HDMI or mini USB(or micro, if that's what it is) like normal? Or do I need a converter cable?
On the SGS II, MHL runs over the physical microUSB interface. It can output straight to 1080p HDMI w/ audio (and charge at the same time) as well as use it as a USB host OTG device. You'll probably have to use the adapter cable to get HDMI working. If you want to charge over MHL, you'll also need an MHL-compliant TV but you can still charge normally using another cable while simultaneously outputting video.
So yes, chances are you do need some sort of adapter cable, at the very least microUSB to HDMI.
For outputting HDMI you need an MHL cable, thats all. If you want to charge and output at the same time you need a dongle (soon TVs that support charging over MHL will come out, and then the cable will handle both, in addition to letting the TV remote control the playback device).

Connecting random stuff to OTG cable...

Just wondering what people have tried to connect to their SGS2s via OTG cables... I have tried the following:
Working:
Generic Logitech wireless mouse via USB wireless dongle
Logitech MX1000 wireless mouse via MX's docking station
Genius USB laser mouse
8GB micro SD card via USB adaptor
64GB SSD USB HDD via y-splitter for additional power
Wireless USB mini keyboard with touchpad (the touchpad worked perfectly & CTRL-ALT-DEL rebooted the phone!!!)
Not working:
Samsung ML-2240 laser printer (recognized but won't print)
Logitech STX webcam (unknown device)
Generic bluetooth USB dongle (unknown device)
87 views and no-one else plugging random USB **** into their phone? Just me then, lol.
i tried to plug in via usb:
generic usb mouse
many usb keys from 2 - 16gb
via bluetooth:
mouse
not working via usb:
generic keyboard
via hdmi and working:
lg lcd tv
projector philips
but via hdmi subtitles was not shown, only on phone
i will try printers today...

When my SGS2 and an OTG arrive, I will test some of my hardware(G15(gaming keyboard with lcd display), Razer Diamondback(mouse), Saitek Cyborg EVO(Joystick), HD2(Android phone) and if I ever have too much money and time, something like THIS and of course USB storage devices from 16MB-1,5TB etc. ) Will let you guys know how everything works.

I tried my Logitech G15 and didn't have much success. Connected directly, it's simply a high power USB device, and via a powered hub, it sometimes is detected, usually isn't (seems to depend in what order it's connected). Regardless, I haven't managed to make it function correctly.
On the other hand, my Logitech MX 518 mouse works great connected directly.
My Logitech Webcam 9000 Pro is detected (even directly), but is unrecognized.
I did some tests with the OTG.
Working:
All USB sticks I tested with.
Keychain Spycam. You can even charge it with the phone Only the webcame mode doesn't work
Some old Logitech wireless notebook mouse
Standard Logitech mouse (one that came with a pc)
Not working:
NTFS drive(Haven't tried the NTFS drivers)
HTC HD2-ADB: High power device. Can't test with powered HUB, because the only one I have is the one in my pc display and that doesn't seem to work with my SGS2.
Razer Diamondback:High power device.
Logitech G15:High power device. (as reported above)
Saitek Cyborg Evo (Joystick):The LEDs in the joystick are working, but whatever I press, nothing happens on the device.
Cheap keyboard with backlight:High power device.
Edit: of courses wifi, Bluetooth and UMTS/HSDPA aren't working over otg either xD
Will update when I try more devices
Has anyone tried if it works with a Logitech G700 ?
Do I need 2.3.4 for all this ? I've heard I do ..
I was wondering if a usb dvb-t tuner should work to watch tv( i didn't try).
Hope someone will test it
Connected my digital camera Sony CyberShot DSC-W300 with USB and a new folder appeared in the Gallery app with all the pictures, impressed.
Didn't work with a Canon G5.
I tried a generic USB mouse and keyboard, several flash drives and my wireless mini-keyboard/mouse-combo via USB dongle
Everything worked

Nope, works on 2.3.3 as well.
Samsung implemented the host stuff from the start on.
Just wondering which OTG cables you guys are using. Also are there externally powered versions available (to power devices with higher requirements)?
I use a cheap 9 bucks one from the ew-Bay.
One day I left the wireless dongle for my minikeyboard/-mouse thing connected - phone was in standby all day, but battery was dead empty after a few hours *lol*
Xbox 360 wired controller : recognized as unknown device, lovely it looks it's NOT a power eating controller ! Lights turn on ok
Apple iPad 1G : could work great (device well mounting at first) but it's recognized as high power device, so... Not working.
Sony PSP : Works perfect
Another android phone (Xperia x10i) : guest detects well USB connection, it charges battery (!) and USB mount works. However, host doesn't detect anything.
I tryied my usb 3 drive formated with ntfs and it worked,:good: played mkv video nice and smooth.
As for the cable I bought it on ebay just standard otg cable
I tried Logitech M310 mouse and K360 keyboard both worked.

[Q] Question about SlimPort

So the Nexus 4 doesn't have USB OTG support. That sucks. I'm fairly certain the answer on the following question will be "no", but I've still got hope.
With SlimPort, you can connect your Nexus 4 to a HDMI monitor, similar to MHL. It also charges your device. In my amazing Dell ST2220T touch monitor (well, the touch isn't so amazing, but the screen quality is), there are four USB ports. When I connect my Nexus 4 to my monitor with SlimPort, would I be able to plug in a keyboard and mouse in the USB ports on my monitor?
If not, I could use bluetooth (if you can connect multiple devices at least, both mouse and keyboard) or use the touch functionality on my monitor, but I'm not sure that works because it's a seperate cable.
It would be really cool to use the N4 as a sort of mini computer. Like Ubuntu had in mind. I can connect it to my speakers, to my monitor, I'm only hoping that I won't have to buy bluetooth accessoires. I prefer to use my wired accessoires, or if that isn't possible the touch functionality of my monitor, but I'm fairly both won't be possible.
the usb on your monitor would have a upstream connector that goes into your pc, so it won't work with phone,
you have to use bluetooth keyboard and mouse

So even if the N4 had USB Host support, I still wouldn't be able to use a wired keyboard and mouse together with the SlimPort, right? I doubt there's some adapter that can do both.
The slimport controller acts as a switch, it either routes usb or displayport signals though the data pins, the usb lanes are not connected while it's in use.
While displayport does contain aux pins for handling additional stuff such as usb (hypothetically?), those pins do not exist in our setup.

Reliable HDMI CONNECTOR

I've tried a couple of devices that claim to connect V20 to tv by wired usb c to HDMI connector. They work for a while then the picture is lost or the phone itself freezes up. About the longest play I've gotten successfully is an hour but usually something goes wrong within 15 minutes.*
The phone has been out over 6 months now so I thought someone may have found a really dependable HDMI connector? I don't mind the lack of power in because I can always change batteries but phone should be able to play through HDMI long enough to watch one movie. That's all I really need hut I don't want to have to screw around with it 10 times to watch one movie.
Thanks so much for your help!
I've been wanting to make use of this feature, but haven't extensively yet. I have though gotten to make fair use of a micro-USB to HDMI adapter. A few trouble spots come to mind here.
Sounds like you're powering the adapter/phone from an external power source? How good is that power source? My micro-USB to HDMI was distinctly less reliable when plugged in since I was merely powering it from a normal USB port. Try running it entirely from the phone's battery. If this works better then it could be you really need a higher power source when using the adapter.
How good is your HDMI cable? Depending on how strongly the phone/adapter drives the HDMI signal, a lower quality cable could break the camel's back.
I've been running into a different bit of trouble with USB-C to HDMI adapters. I've found several of these, but whenever they've got a USB-C pass-through, the pass-through is strictly for power and does not carry the USB signals. The MyDP specification allows for USB3 to be passed through if 1 or 2 pairs are used for the HDMI signal, but allows for USB2 to be passed through no matter how many pairs are used for the HDMI signal. There are adapters which also include USB-A port(s), yet none which include an external USB-C with the USB signals. Grr!
I use C to HDMI not micro usb. V20 doesn't use micro usb. It uses slimport. I have one adapter which allows simultaneous charging and one strictly slimport C to HDMI. Both behave the same way. I have a high quality 2.5 foot HDMI wire.
Power source was Samsung tv usb powered output 1 amp. Point is I have the same issue with pure slimport and no charging.
The one that allows simultaneous charging does in fact charge and work but always craps out but so does the slimport C to HDMI.
Hmm, entertaining what you find when you do research. I suspect the V20 is using the "MyDP" specification, which is the official specification name behind "Slimport". Seems there are at least two other video out methods for USB-C.
I haven't done enough with the video-out feature of my V20 to have much experience yet. With a V10 whenever an adapter was plugged in without external power there were no problems, but when an adapter with external power was plugged in video wasn't reliable.
I'm interested in reading if you find out anything.

Sorry I haven't tried, but its seems to connect smoother the a wifi dongle.
does anyone know if there's a compatible dongle for the V20 with not only hdmi but also power input and usb host?
Happening to me too - Any suggestions
Your situation's description fits my problem exactly. I have a USB C to HDMI that was vouched as working by several V20 owners. I plug it into my Dell monitor to play games on a bigger screen. It works well for a while, then disconnects and popup on my screen says something like, "LG Bridge has stopped working do you want to exit?". Once this happens, it's almost impossible to get the V20 to share the screen again. It's not a hub, just a USB C (male) to HDMI (female).

Best portable setup I have ever experienced (Samsung DEX)

I would like to share with you my setup which is like a dream come true. I have always imagined that one day I'll have single device that I will use throughout the whole day and now it finally is possible.
I bought an opened box HP Elite X3 Lap Dock of Ebay for 230 AUD in a pristine condition for my Galaxy Note 10+ (European, Exynos). Affter I have received it I had some trouble to connect my phone to the Lap Dock - the original HP cable was missing and the one from Samsung did not work. I finally figured it out - It has to be a USB C cable that will allow video transmission, quick data and power transfer - to sum up it has to be at least USB 3.1 Gen 1 that provides 5 Gb/s, 5V, 3A (Gen 2 provides 10 Gb/s). I bought https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01GGKYT7M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 and viola it works!
It is almost a perfect solution - I have been able to switch from Windows laptop instantly, I have prepared a whole lecture with PowerPoint on this setup, I use it from time to time for gaming (love the PSP games and bluetooth controller). All is extremely compact, premium made and useful. The whole set combines: Galaxy Note 10+, HP Elite X3 Lap Dock, Amazon USB C cable, 8Bitdo, Samsung 45Watt Charger, and couple of extras like additional HDMI cable with micro HDMI adapter, USB C to A cable, USB C hub with HDMI, 2 x USB and USB C sockets and foldable bluetooth keyboard with touchpad. All of these fit well in a 11 inch Apple Macbook Air neoprene bag
Connecting the HP Lapdock to the TV with HDMI (using HDMI to Micro-HDMI adapter) and then connecting phone wirelessly with it allows to display on TVs without Miracast.
In order to get regular size font while using DEX I am utilizing MacroDroid macros: Receive Notification DEX App - Change system font to 1.2 and Remove Notification DEX App - Change system font to 0.8 (my default)
The known issues are:
1. Lap Docks speakers does not work - I had to change in settings of DEX and in Developer Settings not to route sound via USB and now when connected sound is played from the phone
2. Touchpad buttons are not recognized - it works perfect other than that (gestures, zooming, scrolling, two fingers for right button)
UPDATE
Audio via lapdock speakers works! - in order to make it work just plug in the phone to the lapdock without turning it on and then turn it on by holding battery button and power button simultaneously for 10 seconds until it boots. When its on in volume panel chose play via display device and enjoy B&O sound.
There is a bad news too - after updating to Android 10 the touchpad is practically unusable - they have change the way it operates and now it moves incredibly fast up and down an extremely slow from left to right - the only option is to use the phone as touchpad which luckily is very good.
The new whole set consists of:

Updated, matured setup:
I can't get my Aussie exynos to work unfortunately.
You have to turn of lapdock first, give it a 10 sec after it has booted than connect it with a usb c 3.1 gen 2 cable (a short one, cables longer than 1 meter seems mot to work) and it should be fine. I am using a 50 cm UGreen cable, sometimes it is required to hard reset the lapdock when it does not pair properly by holding the power button for 10 sec.
An Update:
Finally audio via lapdock speakers works - in order to make it work just plug in the phone to the lapdock without turning it on and then turn it on by holding battery button and power button simultaneously for 10 seconds until it boots. When its on in volume panel chose play via display device and enjoy B&O sound.

Maybe we can send a request to Samsung to fix the problem with the touchpad because we are many users with it.
Anyone with the tab s (5e or 6). Can check if having same problem?
Thanks
Can you please check underneath your Lap Dock what the model number is?
E.g. V8H07UT#ABA or Y1M47EA#ABH, etc.
I am having the latter also with a European Exynos Note 10+ and I can't it to fully connect (no display).
Thanks!
I bought the HP Lap Dock V8H07UT#ABA for my Note 10+ Exynos (Portugal) and was never able to have it work. I bought many different cables but didn't change a thing. The same cables used to connect my Tab S4 (Snapdragon) to the HP Lap Dock worked flawlessly.
So you are very lucky to have a working setup!
Ok, I got seriously lucky.
Found the mainboard of the V8H07UT#ABA online, and it arrived today.
Replaced the mainboard of my Y1M47EA#ABH with it, and I now have a working Lap Dock with my European Exynos Note 10+. Happy camper here!

What kind of USB-C cable are you using? The one that comes with the Lap Dock or another brand? Is Developer Mode enabled ? Thanks.
Currently I am using a cable from Ugreen witch has a proper length and is very well made https://m.pl.aliexpress.com/item/32...detail&spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.307e3c00rTzEtg&mp=1
It also fits in nicely with a magnetic usb c adapter that I have attached to my lapdock https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32985884761.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dZXuZyS
Just now I have found one strange thing - I have change the cable I used with and older one which was working fine and now it did not - what did fix this issue was switching the ends of the cable the end that was going into lapdock went to phone and vice versa. I know it should not make any difference since these cables are reversible but it did mabye that will help somebody.
Well, now we got wireless dex!
Upgraded set, now based on Nexdock Touch - https://www.reddit.com/r/SamsungDex/comments/jp7940/my_perfect_mobile_dex_setup_completed/
I am trying to make the Lapdock work with LG V30 - wirelessly I have succeded to make connection as a secondary screen - so the phone screen is projected to the lapdock.
Now I want to be able to use the keyboard and touch pad: I use a ugreen PD100W cable and I can get the notification on the phone that external kb, mouse and sound is detected. no image goes to the lapdock screen. Sound does though on both LG and HP elite x3.
I think the cable might be to blame...
I tried then to connect wirelessly - I can get the image on the lapdock, the kb even works, but I cannot open apps, no mouse is detected (touchpad does not work) Sound too.
Do I need a cable that says 4k on it?
lapdock 1 P/N - Y4T07AA£ABA
lapdock 2 P/N - Y1M47EA£ABU
I bought one then another hoping to make it work, but they have similar behauviour - when connectd via cable, the screen go dark blank, but I can see that it actually works, just a black picture is displayed
Also, anyone knows what is the difference between lapdock models above?
