disable long press to access settings on secondary screen - LG V20 Questions & Answers

hello, kind folks.
cant seem to find a post (or a setting on the device) to disable this functionality. kinda annoys the hell out of me since my fingers tend to linger on that part of the screen. any leads?
TIA

Hello there, @shoktong
While I do realize this thread is older, I have the same exact problem. My index is used for support when holding my phone while laying down and occasionally will long press the second screen, taking me to the settings. I find this annoying and there is actually no way to remove the setting without root.
I do have some good news for you though: Root has now been achieved on most V20 American varieties. It's set to be released sometime this week.
Here's the link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/sprint-att-locked-bootloaders-root-t3491498/page1
Read it at your leisure, it's quite intriguing. And like I said, it's for all American varieties (Sprint, AT&T, VZW) so you have that to look forward to.

NCK bypassing, unlocking, and/or rooting? Lollipop help.

Okay, so, yes, I know to use the Search function, but alas all information is either outdated or there is no concise answers / solutions to be found. Trust me, I have scoured.
Overview: Okay so Thursday I bought an SGH-i337, being the nerd that I am knowing that I use MetroPCS (can't beat unlimited 4G LTE for $60) I scoured the net and researched ALL models of the S4 and G3. Decided the screen size of the G3 too big coming from a 5C. Decided Sprint's version might work, but not on 4G. Verizon, would switch from LTE to 2G with no 3G support, so that would be a desperation act, haha.
So, my main options were T-Mobile, then AT&T, because MetroPCS and T-Mobile were one and the same. All the people that had T-Mobile based phone sellers were being a pain in the butt to deal with... so, I found an AT&T owner that was ready.
The tragic love story: So on once I used the MicroSIM card in the S4 to cut an old full-size SIM to scale a border around my Nano SIM and finally got it placed perfectly to read... I was happy... which faded quickly as it was locked, how could I be so dumb!
So, the previous owner is now awaiting an unlock code as I found EVERY method to use the UMTS Menu is impossible to get to "[6] Phone Control" option. Due to that silly Auto Updating AT&T bloatware and Kernel upgrade/Firmware.
Okay, I should wait, but... does anyone know a way to get to the Phone Control menu using a secret code?? I have noticed some of the many codes go straight to the Debug Screen or go straight to the other menu options... so could there be one for Phone Control?
Also, maybe is there a way to get the phone to output the NCK Key manually connecting it to a computer and using a prompt? I may have heard about such a thing on SureWest routers through TelNet, to get the administration password... not that I personally have done this. Just feel like if these websites are able to use an IMEI number to charge you for a code... it has to be stored on the phone somewhere right?
Rooting and Downgrading
Also, has anyone tried the Odin way of downgrading and rooting these phones, has personally worked for them? I have found the threads on here and it seems pretty interesting... when I look at previous versions of Droid they look to allow more functionality for more advanced users than this 5.0, so if that be the case I am interested in taking this back to stock and beginning removal of all AT&T programs.
Maybe I am sounding like an idiot, but I have been on a Jailbroken 5C for... probably 2 years now and even with that it seems limiting to the curious, nerdy, mess with things side of me.
Summary:
- Should I just wait the 2-5 days for the code? / Would downgrading firmwares negate the entered NCK code if used prior to downgrade?
- Are there any known ways to unlock this model fully upgraded?
- Should I use the Odin methods of downgrading to stock? / Do you prefer previous versions over 5.0?
- What problems should have you guys faced / should I consider prior to doing anything?
- Should I just try to find a T-Mobile model of the S4??
Phew, sorry, if you read all of that and hate me for it, haha. Please, be knowledgable and not tell me how dumb I am for being so antsy to be able to use this phone w/o WiFi! Haha, you guys try using a 5C forever and see the screen difference / abilities you've been missing out on for so long!
Thanks!
The method of downgrading to 4.4.2 (aka NB1) then rooting and then going to lollipop by keeping the root has worked for me. There is no direct way, to root lollipop atm.
First downgrade to stock rootable 4.4.2. You can do this from any base, and/or use it if you mess your phone up (bootloops, etc). Link here. Second post on that thread, step 1. Make sure you download the rootable one.
To root it use TowelRoot. Run it - Tap make it ra1n - After a succeseful root, install SuperSU.
The follow this post here to goto stock rooted lollipop 5.0.1 (aka OC4). I recommend downloading the deodexed version, so you can install xposed if you want in the future.
Thats it for rooting lollipop. And now that you have root you can get rid of that bloatware.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I personally, don't really fancy lollipop. High Ram usage.
Secondly, i bought this phone on eBay and it came unlocked, and even after flashing different firmwares, its still unlocked. I think if you unlock using that NCK code, the phone will stay unlocked forever.
Thirdly, the T-Mobile version has an unlocked bootloader, which is a big up in comparison to the i337. We are restriced to only using one costum recovery, that is SafeStrap. Others, don't work.
Thank you
I will probably have to go through that whole process. Got it unlocked thankfully, but am feeling as though based on specs and the little apps I have installed the phone should be a bit smoother in basic functionality especially Web browsing.
So yeah definitely already feeling your point in resource hog and though I disabled the bloatware, I don't think it helps being installed.
Also, figuring out after using the phone in my car that Galaxy has very quiet audio output via the 1/8" headphone jack. Seems that you can find volume controlled headphones easier than just straight cords! However, found this a known issue for all Galaxies and rooting it may be the easiest workaround.
Thanks for the organized list of information/insight! Now I will have some more stuff to geek out on... ?

I don't know, but cranking the volume to full on my phone using earphones, makes my ears hurt . The audio output on mine is great, nothing modified.
Oh, if you decide to stick with kitkat, check out these posts. I'm sure they will come in handy for stock roms. Simply to make life easier.

Yeah, I'd say it's probably fine with headphones, but through a car's auxiliary it is probably 25-30% quieter than my iPhone even at "full" volume.
Read that there are files to modify, but you have to be rooted.
What is this Mobile Data Toggle? Would it be really at all useful seeing as I have MetroPCS? * I assume that ridding AT&T is just a general tweak, which I do like getting rid of the carrier.

Mobile data toggle is used to enable Internet from your carrier/sim. Ridding the AT&T thing is sorta general because you need to have root.

screen sensitivity too high!

Can this be reduced?
Using this phone is near impossible (browsing, ex) without so many false touches!
This has to be fixed.
No root = no build.prop edits.
Anyone know of a solution?
May have to keep my Note 5.
I've noticed that the screen is crazy sensitive. It's almost like i didn't even touch it yet and an app will open or the screen will swipe... Interested if there is any was to adjust it a bit as well.
At first I thought this was just a subjective thing that random people were experiencing but last night I was playing monkey King escape and it kept swiping me to the side when I would swipe up and vice versa. Also getting random clicks when scrolling through menus and webpages... And I'm using cases so it's not edge sensitivity. As much as I like everything else about this phone I can't deal with something as basic as that going wonky on me for this amount of money.

I'm having the exact same problem. It's very frustrating. It is difficult to do anything without unintentional opening apps and links. I'm hoping this is a software issue that can be resolved with a firmware update. If I cannot find something where Samsung acknowledge this issue before my 14 day return period is over. I may just have to go back to my S6. That's a shame because I really love everything else about this phone. There is a discussion about this issue here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/galaxy-s7-edge-touchscreen-overly-t3326936
I experienced the same problem when using without a case. But with my case on, no issues at all. I have a Spigen neo-hybrid case if it matters to anyone and love it.

Daze I see you also have/had a S6 Edge. Did you have any issues with the screen sensitivity on the S6 Edge? The S7 is my first Edge phone. Thanks.

The S6 definitely wasn't as sensitive as the S7 without a case, but I kept the same model of case on my S6 as well. I tried using the S7 around the house without a case and it definitely is touchy. No issues with the case on though.

Thanks for the reply. I do have a Spigen Air Cushion Ultra Hybrid case. It does help with the edge but I have an issue with the entire screen being over sensitive. I don't have that problem with my S6. Apparently I'm not the only one. It's even mentioned in a couple of reviews. I'm just hoping that it is resolved in a firmware update.

I'm getting that same case!
yeah, I think a firmware update should fix that sensitivity and bring it down a tad. Not sure if all variants (Sprint, T-Mobile AT&T?) have it set this high or if it's just Verizon. To me, it's not like a dealbreaker or anything, but ideally I would like it lowered some.
I have the same issues with extra screen sensitivity, so does my wife's regular S7. Actually when typing responses on this forum, I often hit the wrong thng on my SwiftKey keyboard on accident and it closes out everything lol. Then I have to start over. I'm not even sure how the heck it's happening.

The S6 Edge+ was nearly flawless.
Tapatalk browsing on this (S7 Edge) makes me want to throw the damn thing! LOL
Maybe this is Samsung's answer to TW lag. Just like in the old days (I'm talking i486 w/ Win 3.1 LOL) of making the mouse tracking fast to make the computer feel faster.
Just posting to say my screen is too sensitive as well. I fixed some false presses with a case, but still regular scrolling and clicking can be hit or miss if I'm hovering too close to the screen.
I've noticed this also, trying keeping your finger not so close to the screen when using it lol.
I found a solution for my over sensitive screen
I really feel stupid for my last post. I should have not jumped the gun so soon. I should have given it some time. Anyway after working great for the hours as I played around with the phone yesterday the over sensitive issue has returned today though not quite as bad as before. I just left a local Verizon corporate store to make an exchange. The problem is they do not have any S7 Edge's in stock nor have they ever received any S7 Edge's in their shop. Almost 2 weeks since the official release and not one Edge phone. They did have the regular S7 in stock and I considered switching to one. I also had my S6 with me and considered re-activating it. I ended up leaving with my Edge. I pre-ordered my Edge online and have one more day to decide to send it back or not. Sorry if anyone used that Verizon repair assistance and it didn't work. I meant well.
I called Verizon tech support today in regards to the screen sensitivity issue. He first had me boot in safe mode to see if the problem was present without any user installed apps. Problem still existed in safe mode. He suggested that I run the Verizon repair assistance to see if reflashing the firmware would help. He emailed me the link to the website. I didn't think that it would work but I figured I would give it a try. If it didn't work I was going to take the phone to the local Verizon corporate store for an exchange and maybe even switch to the regular S7. To my surprise it actually worked. My phone's screen is normal now. I'm still in kind of disbelief because it is such an enormous difference. Before flashing, just barely touching the phone would open apps. Scrolling on websites would open links. Now it only happens when I intentionally tap apps and links. The repair assistance is easy to use. It backs up your apps and settings and restores everything for the most part when it's done. When the phone first boots up it starts the setup wizard. When it gets to the part where it ask to restore backups from the cloud I wouldn't let it because it wasn't yet connected to wifi. I learned the hard way what happens when your phone installs a complete backup on data and repair assistant re-installs a backup and settings. Anyway the program will tell you when you have to make manual selections during the process like what USB connection to choose. I don't know if this will work for everyone but it definitely worked for me. I'm going keep testing it though in case the issue returns. I have only 2 days to return the phone for a new replacement if necessary. Here is the link to the repair assistance website.

Please keep us up to date on this over the next couple days. If this is the fix it seems too good to be true! Also, do you mean when you said - you learned the hard way about letting it restore the backup via data instead of wifi - that the restore simply eats thru a ton of data? Or was that some other meaning? My home wifi is slow as crap compared to LTE so I don't know if I have the patience to wait for a full restore on my wifi lol.

Ok I did this and since I don't have much on my phone I chose NOT to back it up.
It downloaded a big file (the latest fully updated ROM, presumably) so if you don't have a fast connection this may take some time. We were getting good speed so it only took a minute or two.
It does seem to be better.
It needs to settle in before the jury's out.
Definitely worth the set up as new if it turns out to be the solution.
It was driving me nuts.

See my update on my original post please. As far as the data issue, I purchased my S6 last November from Best Buy. They set everything up in the store as far as my Verizon and Samsung registration. On the way home unbeknownst to me the phone was restoring all of my dozens of apps from a backup on Verizon. I was in my car with no wifi and I didn't realize what was happen until I received a text message from Verizon informing me that I was almost out of data. I shut off mobile data right away but I had very little left at that point. Apparently downloading loads of apps eats a lot of data.
I have sensitive S6 (it may be similar to other S)
This suggestion is from somebody else but it worked for me.
try this:
setting | personal | accessibility | dexterity | press and hold change it from 0.5 to 1.0
Changing that setting didn't work.
This phone is useless IMO for browsing in most apps. Every time I touch to scroll where there's an item that's clickable it selects it. VERY annoying. NEVER had this before in any device. Methinks this is going back.
I hit the twitter or Facebook link in posts when scrolling occasionally but it's few and far between.

Fingerprint reader half working on lockscreen?

I am still new to the fingerprint reader so my old habit of swiping, which takes you to an pin pad. It says to Use fingerprint or enter pin, but about half the time it doesn't take the fingerprint. I'll either have to let it time out and get it on the main lockscreen or just enter the pin.
Actually the first day it was so bad that I didn't even think it was accepted on that pin screen. It wasnt until last night when I even saw it say "use fingerprint" but it works about half the time.
The fingerprint scanner works pretty reliably everywhere else so I don't think its a hardware issue. Just curious if others are having problems scanning on the pin screen.
Only time I have an issue is the first time Samsung Pay reads my print. 99% of the time, I have to put my finger on it again. Best way to solve your issue that I found is by unlocking your phone as follows:
Press and hold the home button with a finger that you have saved. When the phone unlocks, remove your finger. This way your finger is firmly on the reader. If it is still giving you issues, try making the fingerprint again in the settings.
I have big fat fingers lol. And I use my thumbs to unlock. In the fingerprint settings, I now have multiple fingers set to unlock the phone, that way, if I'm having maybe a problem hitting it right with one finger, I can get it with the other. I've got both hands covered. Multiple fingerprints to me is key. Also, when I was first learning to scan my prints, it took me a little while to get it right. For my thumbs, I'm pretty methodical... I start at the bottom left, lift up bottom middle, lift up, top left, lift up, etc... Basically let it scan a small quadrant of my thumb at a time. Seems to work really well. I have very few bad readings. Usually happens when my fingers have something on them, or the button has something on it, or my finger is laying too far sideways...
Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk
No its not about reading my finger. I have multiple fingers setup (4).
I dont have an issue unlocking via fingerprint from the main lockscreen. The problem is when I try to swipe and it asks for a pin. Its this screen where it works half of the time. Its not that it isnt "matching" because when it works it will throw an error like "no match". But half the time it doesn't even recognize me trying to scan a finger.
I've been testing it more and more and it is a bug.
I understand what you're saying now. I haven't run into this problem yet. I do have some issues here and there, but it's not like an all the time situation.

I just moved to the Note 5 and grabbed Marshmallow. I can say that the issue was specific to the S7E. Even on the same screen, it is responsive regardless of whether it was successful or failed, at least it prompts and responds.
On the PIN screen, it just would recognize a fingerprint input half the time.
Update
My Note 5 did it a few times today too. Aggrevating.
When you have a bunch of notifications, you select one to open, the pin screen comes up, and occasionally doesnt take fingerprints. Its like it's looking for ONLY the pin. Weird.
Im having this exact issue as well. So annoying to be not able to unlock via fingerprint at the PIN screen!!!!
Having exact same issue, and it pretty much makes the
fingerprint unlock method useless. I'm using a Galaxy S7 Edge, in Australia with an Australian carrier, so it's a safe bet the issue isn't isolated to Verizon (perhaps move the thread in the main s7e thread to get more attention?)
*The fingerprint works
100% time on the main lock screen, but whenever you tap a notification or swipe
to unlock, and you are presented with the PIN/Fingerprint or
Password/Fingerprint screen, the fingerprint unlock method rarely works. You
either have to enter the pin/password, or go back to the main lock screen and
use your fingerprint there to unlock the phone.
Seeing as multiple people have reported the issue, safe to say its not an isolated issue. I'm surprised more people haven't complained
about it, as it really defeats the purpose of fingerprint unlocking.
*Is there a way to raise the issue with Samsung so they can address it in a future update? Or does anyone know of a temporary fix?
To solve the problem you can have your home and work address saved as a safe place and the phone will not lock at those locations.
For me this helps to not use the fingerprint scanner all of the time. I also never have a problem with it anyways.
Sent from my SM-G935V using XDA-Developers mobile app
Good suggestion, thanks for that : )
I'm hoping Samsung acknowledge the issue and fix the problem soon. TBH, I'm surprised more people haven't encountered and complained about the issue. I noticed it within a day of getting the phone. Perhaps people don't bother with fingerprint unlock? Either way, fingers crossed an update comes soon.
I traded out for a Note 5 and its MM update is doing the exact same thing. I switched to a pattern backup and I think its working much better.
I am going to try that new Good Lock that updates the UI. Running good and will report if its still broken or if it fixes the fingerprint reader.
Did some testing of my own. Issue is not present with goodlock. Did you find the same mate?

Same identical problem here. It worked only one time, after that it doesn't worked anymore.
Good Lock is a modified (perhaps the next gen?) TouchWiz silently released by Samsung that is still very much in its alpha/beta stages.

Ironic that the fingerprint bug plagues touchwiz, but doesn't seem to be present in this new good lock system UI.

That's a really good question. It's am extremely annoying bug that I keep running into multiple times on a daily basis.
If anyone knows how to officially report bugs to samsung please share. I'm not going to hold my breath though. Seeing as I am on a carrier firmware, the update could take quite a while before I see it on my phone. That's assuming samsung even fix the bug in the ubranded firmwares.

Could it be an hardware issue? Has anyone installed last Samsung's update? Maybe it solve this issue too.
I doubt it's a hardware issue. the fingerprint reader works fine, it's only on the screen described above is when it works inconsistently. And it doesn't happen on the good lock interface. All of this clearly points to a software bug, not a hardware issue
I haven't received any need update yet but if you do please post your results!

hi to all how any one that has the same setup will help me understand i will try and keep it short first im using samsung note 4 running 6.0.1 now

From the Google Smart Lock support page (https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6093922):
"Note: When you don't use your phone for 4 hours, and after you reboot your phone, you'll need to manually unlock it with your PIN, pattern or password"
It's a security feature.
EDIT: ...and, wow, yes, that was some run-on sentence!
Is there a root app to disable it or not

Ok, so here goes:
I use my gear 2 together with my note 4 as a trusted device. You know like every time the gear 2 is close, the device must stay unlocked. But it does not stay unlocked and there is no Bluetooth disconnecting, anything like this. I looked at that. Battery is full, the gear 2 and phone stayed together and there was no setting like disable and enabling of Bluetooth at any stage.
I connect it now and its fine, but after a while (don't know the exact time here ), say after 3 hours of no use, i press the power button and it asks for my pin or fingerprint as if the gear 2 is not near. The gear 2 is still on and there was nothing like disconnecting. As if the phone on its own make sure that it asks the finger print every now and again.
For example, i leave it overnight the next morning first fingerprint then you can use the phone.I hate this. It kind of bugs me if they steal the phone and the range is to big, the device will lock any way. Why lock when he gear 2 it near the phone? Any help please.

Fixed that for you
I really had to break that down to make it readable for me. But as others said, it's an Android feature. Afaik there is no way of disabling that all together. There might be some xposed module i haven't heard of, but with my moto360 i couldn't get it to work the way you'd want. Sorry mate

As the programmers use to says: Its a feature, not a bug
Some people are just plain jerks, and I wish XDA would take these "grammar police" trolls a bit more seriously and penalize them.
Perhaps OP is using a translator, or is from another country, or is young. That should not matter to any of us and we should offer our help regardless of whether he/she includes proper punctuation or not. I'm sure the effort he/she put into typing it was much greater than that of the ridiculous responses some of you gave.
thanks Crossvxm i appreciate that you came up for me its just i love the new 6.0.1 but there are a few new thing that google does not say and i thought it was a bug like my Bluetooth failing

The Note 4 is problematic all around, but 6.0.1 is a problem for every device that has it. It is the reason I left my Nexus 6P, and my Nexus 6. I have a Xiaomi Mi Max, also on 6.0.1 and it has the same major flaws I experienced on all devices running 6.0.1. The problems I speak of are the WiFi and Data stop working briefly while browsing the web, or downloading something. However, I believe this is an issue related to the security patches related to Qualcomm devices on 6.0.1. It seems like an overall radio problem.

Second screen: What can be done with it? Useful alternative to multicolor LED?

Hi V20 community,
At the moment the V20 is top of my list to replace my LG G3. Love the G3, but I'm itching to upgrade. The main thing holding me back is that I know the V20 doesn't have a notification LED, and for the last 7 years of my life, I've lived by my multicolored LED driven by the Light Flow app. I often have sound off and vibrate off, and just being able to peer at the phone discretely or across the room, and see the LED blinking a certain sequence of colors, tells me what voice mails / texts/ emails are waiting.
Can the second screen --paired with whatever app-- be used this way? What apps are available for it and what scope of control is possible?
If it matters, I plan to get the H918 variant (T-Mobile) because it is apparently among the more rootable / dev supported variants of the phone. I will be using it on the ATT network.
There are other phones I'm looking at, but I've loved my G3 for a couple years and would not at all mind sticking with an LG.
Thoughts appreciated!!

Well, as for as I have found, the second screen is rather limited for the kind of functionality you are looking for. I does offer an array of shortcuts, but changing them is rather limited, i.e. recent apps, 4 or 5 contacts (which you can choose), some q-tile shortcuts (not sure if that is customizable or not cuz I haven't tried), and a couple other things like date/time with screen off and even shows your signature (or header of your choosing). It also shows notifications of sms and calls, which you can handle directly from the 2nd screen. I have found it is a rather useful tool overall.
As for the notification LED, the LG V20 DOES have a notification LED on stock (not sure about custom OS as I'm still on stock)...ish. Here's the deal, you can enable the flash to act as a notification LED. I only tried it once and didn't get into any true settings on it, so I'm not sure if you can change flash sequence or not. The downfall is that for one, IT'S SUPER FREAKING BRIGHT!, and second, it's on white light. I'm in the middle of system dump and can't really check it out either.
Another downfall of the second screen is it doesn't currently work on ANY custom roms; hence why I'm still on stock. This of course, is being worked on. Not sure who exactly, other than myself, is working on it though.
Overall, coming from the Nexus 6, the device is truly amazing and I don't regret upgrading.
For what it's worth, I am on the H910 (AT&T) version.

Thanks Thomas for that detailed review. As for the camera LED ... I did that on my work-provided iPhones, in the past, and eventually it got too annoying (albeit, not as annoying as iOS more generally).
It looks like the second screen is not much help to me notification-wise. Sigh. And I just found out that the H918 (T-mobile variant) doesn't support LTE band 17, which is a big problem for me since that's the band strongest at my house location. I was going to get the T-mo version for its easier rooting/modding. I've heard even the ATT variant (H910) doesn't have band 17... has that been an issue at all for you? Perhaps I'm misinformed on the the ATT specs though.
Thanks for your help. Looks like I might have to pass on the V20, if there's no good notification replacement for the multicolor LED, and lack of the band I need at home. Appreciate you taking the time to help, though!
Im on WETA custom rom. It has 2nd screen support. I really like the 2nd screen. Shows text, VM, other notifications, rooted mine and added battery display to it.. Other benefits are when doing something on the phone (browsing, pictures, really any app) an incoming call wont take over your screen, you can decline the call using the 2nd screen and continue or you can answer.. At that point the dialer will come up.
if you are in an app and want to switch to one of your recent or 'quick apps' you can do so w/o going home or to the app drawer. Even better for example trying to calculate something using 2nd screen to switch from browser to calculater tben hitting the back button to go straight back to the browser... Its actually pretty handy!

WETA is a stock rom not AOSP based, what thomas meant by custom roms are aosp based roms. The second screen will always work on the stock rom no matter how you repack a stock rom(this is what weta literally is),unless of course you disable the screen somehow. So yea to clear the confusion for op , only aosp based roms cant use the seconds screen, beware though they are making progress on it, and are already displaying stuff on it , just text for now.
I like (not love) the second screen. I am on stock rom, rooted. It's mildly useful. Always has the date and time up there. When you turn the main screen on it has a button for clock and settings. I can easily go in and set the alarm clock. When a phone call comes up you can swipe the second screen to accept or decline the call.

My mistake on the wording about custom roms. I did mean AOSP based. And a couple good points by kaluna00that I failed to mention.
As for not having band 17, I don't have any connections issues. At home, sitting in front of my computer is where I have the worst reception/signal on the shamu. I would only have 1 bar on a good day. But the V20, has 3 bars right now. Take that for what you will though. Maybe adding VoLTE and VOIP calling would be beneficial for you in that aspect. The bad part about baseband related issues, you don't really know if it's gonna work till you or someone else tries it.

Like you, I made the move from the G3 w/ Light flow (actually, I think it was light manager), and since the original Motorola Droid release day, I have refused to own a phone without a multicolored notification LED.
I made the move to the V20 in December and was apprehensive at first but don't miss the notification LED at all. The second screen is always on and will show the icon for any missed notification. Functionally, I find it no different than an LED. At anytime, I can peak at my phone and see if there is a missed notification in the upper left hand corner and can easily identify what kind it is by the icon.
The notification LED on the G3 is rather small and had a narrow viewing angle anyway so it doesn't provide any more visibility than the second screen IMO.
I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor.
As far as band support, the US unlocked version should have all the bands and is easy to root. If you do end up going with another variant, I can help you with the Dirty Santa process (I've done it to a number of V20's). But, yeah, I wouldn't worry about the notification LED. It becomes a non-issue after a day or two.
