attaching files with default messaging app - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

I've recently just switched back to Samsung after being on iPhone for the last two years, and was wondering if it is possible to add access my files to add docx, and other files in the text messaging app.
I remember when I used to have a note 2 I was able to add any file within my text messaging app and with my s7 edge it doesn't seem to even bring that option up.
Is there a way to enable this feature or is there something that I'm supposed to do like rooting or whatever.

I cannot add via stock Messaging app, nor from Google Messenger. I also couldn't Share it from the stock file manager app, nor Root Explorer. I don't know if you can send those via text...?

[new release] VJSlippyPalm - Toggles Palm Messaging

VJSlippyPalm
Guys, a quick app:
see here for the Palm Messaging App
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=280256
Once installed, you lose some access to the normal inbox, which you may still want.
Using VJSlippyPalm, you can assign the app to a hardware key.
Running VJSlippyPalm will then launch the Palm Messaging app.
However, pressing it again will close Messaging and instead switch to the normal Inbox. And vice versa.
If you have one of the apps already launched in the background, it will jump to that app (eg if Inbox is open, and you're on the Today screen, it will jump to Inbox)
By default it will close the other app.
You can launch it with a command line -min to minimise instead, for whatever reasons.
-about will show information about the app.
Download from my website.
V
PS: please note, this is not an app to uninstall the Palm Messaging App. It just switches between the different screens. Backup your system before installing Palm Messaging!
lol...well, that was fast!
Will give it a shot now...thanks.
Very nice, although I get a slow screen redraw between Messaging and Outlook E-Mail. Any ideas? On a i-mate JASJAM.
Okay this probably has something to do with Messaging closing, rather than minimising.
I understand creating a shortcut with "-min", but how to assign this shortcut to the Messaging hard key?
hmmm... i installed the palm messaging app and did the registry. i lost the sms/mms on inbox. is using this software will bring the sms/mms in the inbox or will this just switch between the two?
beatrix - it's nothing sophisticated, it just switches between the normal inbox and the palm app. It won't modify registry or fix anything that's already been broken
To assign the -min version to a hardware key, go into your start menu, find the existing shortcut to VJSlippyPalm, copy it, paste it, and then edit the copy. You want to amend the shortcut to just say
"....blah blah\vjslippypalm.exe" -min
Click to collapse
Rename the shortcut to VJSlippyPalm Min.lnk
And then launch that in the normal way from Settings > Buttons.

Legend, thanks!
What is the difference between the Palm threaded app in that link above (that was removed) and the one here on freewareppc.com?

That one is the triangle powers .Net app. It's not integrated nicely like the Palm version and was very buggy when I tried it and very slow to load.
cant install cab from site on phone
hey, i tried dling the cab from your site directly from my phone, but it just brought me to a webpage with a whole lot of source code and stuff.
Seems ok to me:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/releases/vjslippypalm/vjslippypalm.cab
paste it in to your browser, should work.
V
hey, tried it again and it still didnt work. tried in pie and opera.
Weststar - I didn't know you were using your PDA to browse. I could attach it as an attachment, but I don't like doing that as I like to update the cabs on my website as I develop them - attaching it will cause a static link of course. Could you use your PC to download instead? Worst case I'll attach.
V
well im at school right now, so i cant do it on my computer. but whatever works out for you is fine with me =)
do you /anybody know if the Palm's thread messaging implies all the SMS will go from the default inbox to the Palm's own database? i.e. if you open the default mail application, will it still be able to read all old sms.
to Zenkins:
I'm guessing you already have your answer by now, but to you or in case anyone else wonders, after install your SMS will NOT go to the old messaging database. I assure you this minor drawback is not worth passing the Palm threaded messaging app up though. It works beautifully! The lack of threading was my biggest and only serious complaint about my CHT-9000 (Hermes/TyTN/8525) since leaving my Treo 600. I use SPB backup to backup the databases daily in any case so for me at least, it's a non-issue.
Err, just realized I misread... I'm pretty sure the install killed my old SMS database. I'm not 100% certain I did have anything in it since I had just flashed the ROM and started fresh, but I'm pretty sure i did.
I don't understand. Which install killed your db?
VJSlippyPalm certainly shouldn't, it doesn't touch any databases, and AFAIK the Palm app shouldn't destroy it either, hence the use of VJSlippyPalm to switch between the two apps, which can co-exist well. However, I don't use the Palm app so can't say definitively.
V
thanks, I have figured that the old SMS will be lost. in anycase, I tried installing the palm messaging, it hung on me when I try to compose the message, or if it manage to compose and send, it goes straight into the sentbox, but the message doesn't get send out at all.
any idea?
Really no idea, as I said, I don't use it. Try googling for VJSlippyPalm and it'll take you to the another website that packaged up the Palm app. They've discussed bugs etc there.

Thanks for this. But I think i got a problem, coz I got custom deoxed ROM - I cannot install it.
is there any way to get audio postcard to communicate via Gmail and not via text msg (MMS)?
i don't have msging on my phone, but do have unlimited data - don't feel like paying $10+ for 2-4 uses a month
but it is a decent option for those who haven't tried it - hit it, camera opens, take a pix, another screen opens for the user to record a voice msg, then it asks who you'd like to send it to
as email addresses are one of the options, i assumed it would email - no luck - found the 8 attempts in the notification window showing me "MMS service not available"

I haven't really messed around with it but if it gives you an option to just save the file then you can do that. THen open gmail and attach the file.
tks for the suggestion, just checked - no option to save
Did you look in the gallery, I use this app all the time with the kids and it always saves the pictures, you don't have to choose save, as soon as you snap it, it's saved. I haven't changed any settings on mine and they save to /dcim/camera (or /sdcard/dcim/camera if using root explorer) Hope that helps.
they're there, but no voice attachment
tks - found "talking photos" on android market, it's a little cruder ie not as polished or as fluid in use, but works
Up!
Anybody got a version that I could install on international i9000 ?
Or maybe somebody got an idea for an app with this kind of funcionality ?

I got the .apk and the .odex file. How do I apply them? I tried to install the .apk manually and it failed. Do I add both files to a zip and flash via Clockwork Recovery?
Use root explorer and copy both files to system/apps folder
try using this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10223438&postcount=1

[Q] Changing file association? SMS App.

Is there any way to unassociate a file-program relationship?
Allow me to elaborate...
I used handcent for texting on my g2. I sold that yesterday and got a mt4g, but I have a problem. When I installed it on my g2 and first opened a text, a message popped up and asked me which program I wanted to use and I clicked handcent. Ever since then I never had a problem with it on my g2, it would always open my texts with handcent. But when I opened a text on my mt4g it didn't ask but I didnt think anything of it at first. But i noticed now that when I get a text, i get 2, one for the stock app and one for handcent. Is there any way to "unassociate" the program with the text files? So then my stock messaging app won't work? i also tried going to "manage applications" and tried to uninstall the stock app but the box is greyed out and you cannot delete it, nor did I know if this was a good idea or not.
TIA
Disable notifications in stock app and you should be good to go.
1. Go to Manage Apps, find stock messages.apk and click the "Clear Defaults" button at the bottom
2. Use titanium if you wanna freeze or uninstall Messages.apk (not recommended since messages.apk have the auto-retrieve option for SMSs)
3. And yes disable any notifications in Settings of stock app

Multiple SMS Applications

Hello,
i own an OnePlus 2 which is rooted with the Exodus ROM with android 6.0 also the xposed Framework is installed.
At the Moment I try to use two SMS apps because i like some stuff in both but they both have disadvantages.
Is there any possibility to send SMS via both apps? Because everytime I try it I have to change the default messenger app.
I also try to change the permissions of the apps but it didn't help
have a nice day
Sir Hamburger
Hi, what you are hoping to do cannot be possible since the system accepts one sms app at a time, it's deeply coded and works with the sms push and the network provider. so you can't have both sms apps corresponding to the same network, system or device. the option is just not available yet. you have to choice either way.
First of all thank you steps parku for the answer.
I solved it now with a tasker profile with the secure settings extension
If you start an other sms app tasker sets it on default.
Kind regards
Sir Hamburger

Sent Messages (SMS/MMS) - Can't Backup or View Using Non-Stock App

My phone is an H910 running Oreo (stock; never rooted). I have used the stock Messaging app for SMS/MMS.
I am trying to backup all SMS/MMS and move to a different device so that I can delete them on my H910 to save space. There are about 1,200 messages to move. Ideally, I would like to be able to save all sent/received messages and open them in a messaging app on a different non-LG device. (I would like to open them via a messaging app installed to BlueStacks. My preference would be to save them to my email; I previously used SMS Backup+ with great success, but that has not worked for years now it seems, so I am not counting on a solution like that.)
The problem I am running into is that I cannot seem to save my sent messages. In other words, I can see all of my received messages when viewing them on the new device, but none of the messages I have sent.
I have tried switching to new messaging apps such as Google Messages and Textra on the H910. However, this only shows my received messages (no sent messages).
I have also tried using a backup/restore app such as SMS Backup & Restore, but my sent messages are not backed up that way, either. (I have used a number of different methods to view the file with the backed up messages. The only messages shown are received messages.)
Does anyone have any recommendation for how to solve this? Why can't I backup/save my sent messages?

SMS Backup & Restore works for me on Android 8 (US996).
A search came up with this:
https://community.t-mobile.com/accounts-services-4/not-able-to-backup-sent-text-messages-12778
where RCS messages are the problem, are you using RCS?

Thank you for your response.
Yes, that appears to be the problem. The H910 is AT&T-branded, and I am using it on AT&T. It automatically comes with "advanced messaging" (aka RCS) enabled. So, that is the problem... that is why SMS Backup & Restore will not work. (It looks like SMS Backup & Restore might work with RCS if I had been using Google Messages from the start. Unfortunately, that was not the case.)
I am now wondering if I can get another V20/other capable device with a better messaging app installed prior to the process and then use AT&T's Mobile Transfer to move everything over and back. I may pursue this.
If anyone has a better method of backing up SMS/MMS/RCS messages, please let me know. Otherwise, I guess the moral of the story is to always use a third-party messaging app that allows for backup of RCS or stores the messages via cloud/alternative means that you can actually access.
This might be a solution:

Thank you. I actually was attempting to use that last night. It seems that using this allows you to backup all messages (SMS/MMS/RCS) to AT&T's cloud, but you can then only access them via AT&T's messaging app. There does not appear to be a way to export them from that app to a different device. So, it is great if you just want to view the messages on a different device... but not so great if you actually want to move the messages from one device to another.
