Seriously, is there really only ONE roam contrl app out there? Planning to root because my signal at home blows. Spent the day checking out my options, and right now they seen very limited.

App called Roam Control is the best one I ever used. Worth the price. In my opinion.

It works and the dev is one of the most responsive i've ever seen (he lurks on xda, in fact he might post here) so......... Buy it.
Be sure to run roam control once before you need it to configure the license so you arent up the creek without a paddle in a low signal area as the app can't check the license without internet access.
Sent from my SPH-D720 using Tapatalk
Get an airave to fix the signal. Sprint will send you a free one.
You can use Qpst to force load a verizon prl. There is a thread on the evo forum walking you through it. I would say roam control will be much easier/better solution though because you can witch back and forth as needed. Using the vzw prl will force you onto the vzw network 100% of the time.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Not going to pay for an airave even though they say its free. Price for an app is not a problem. Every other type of app has more than one to choose from. I'm sure the dev is a good guy, I just like to have choices

I love the app, but I don't find the dev responsive from my only e-mail to him.
A couple of months ago, I sent him a note with a suggestion or two, and no response. I was kind of disappointed, but was just hoping that he read them and was going to implement them in a future relaese.
Why wouldn't you use an Airave ? You can call 877.775.4886 and let them know your signal blows at home. I use my Airave with four phones on it currently and it's great always having full bars and no dropped calls even in my basement. Give it a try...
I'm in an area with decent Verizon but crappy Sprint coverage. I've heard forcing roam is used to get booted sans ETF. I'd love to do it but don't wanna get a letter from Sprint. Whatdaya think?
Currently, only good roaming app is roam control.
Like above post said, there is way to manually load up 00001 Verizon PRL using QPST. There is a thread here or in dev section. This gives you good speed but you are on Verizon 100% of the time and I heard that Sprint might catch you and block 3G access somehow.
What I am using is 11115 PRL. This is Sprint PRL that let you roam 3G. Normally when there is Sprint tower nearby, this PRL will not let you roam, but using the app, I can force roam. I use it when Sprint is giving me ****ty data.

I am actually experimenting the possibility, but I think Sprint is blocking my access to Verizon 3G when I am trying. Whenenver I start to use heavy data stuff like netflix, the 3G roaming becomes unstable and disconnects. So I just use it when I am in need of data but Sprint is giving me way to slow connection.
I just wish our phones would react properly to Roam Control. I'm in Central Florida and apparently it only forces roaming to one frequency, not all frequencies.
Q: When I select "roam only", why does the phone have no signal?
A: Chances are you have a Samsung phone, right? Samsung phones have different behavior - when in "roam only", they only roam on the 800mhz frequency band. There are areas in the US that are 1900mhz only, which means that Samsung phones will not get a signal in those areas.

f'in Samsung screws me again.
Official cyanogen mod has a force roam feature built in. You just check the box and it roams uncheck and it stops roaming
Deca's cyanogen doesn't have that functionality yet, but it will when it becomes a part of official cm

It's a bug of the phone itself. I've been in areas where Verizon 1900 was present and no Sprint signal around. My son's Touch Pro 2 had full VZW signal and my Epic had zero signal.

Oh, I understand, it's just disappointing... I also used to have a TP2 and loved the working forced roaming on it... Funny how a 4yo phone has more functionality than a <previously> flaghship 4G phone... If the HTC Shift had a larger screen I would have gone with that.
One. Its not free. I'm paying 130 per month, shouldn't have to install tower and pay taxes on it. Two. Not into helping neighbors receive better signal by pigybacking on MY internet that I'M paying for.
My question is still the same. Is roam control the only app. Pretty sure its is good. Just like any other apps, some work better for some people and not other.

I've had an airave for 2 years the cost??? NADDA They even upgraded it to the Data model after I complained about having lousy data at home too.
You can control who has access to both your wireless network and your airave. I'm sure you already know that so I say TROLL
Well, cs said I would be paying the tax on it, and I couldnt control who has access. Still no answers on whether or not there are other apps.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That has been answered, I count, 3 times already. Just because its not the answer you're looking for, doesn't mean its not been answered.
So for the last time, yes, Roam Control IS CURRENTLY the only roaming app.
Yes you can control who accesses it. I currently only have family and friends numbers allowed to make calls. It is simple and the csr is an idiot. Nothing new.
Thank you zett, will call them back. As for the question being answered about other apps, it hasn't. It was only said roam control was the best, as if there is more than one. Not looking to ruffle feathers, but I am able to comprehend what is written. When it is said the only good roam control app is roam control, it implies the existence of others. A simple yes or no will have done. Thank you all, and may the best of the day find you.

Hey guys, I was searching the interwebs for some general unlocking info and I found this from a couple years ago. Pretty interesting I think, what happened to this? Are they actually reflashing phones in-store? As far as the "gradual opening of the US wireless market"...it's gradual indeed
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/2541615...ss/t/metropcs-customers-bring-your-own-phone/
.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

Interesting. So are GSM data standards are more inter-compatible between carriers than with CDMA? (I had to look up what 1xRTT is =) )

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.
MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.
Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.
Check here if you don't believe me:

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.
I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

I was thinking about switching to Verizon, but the results you gave are for one city, in one corner of the country, I need more proof! And truthfully they need to test again when tmobiles LTE network goes active. I also thought it odd for the other 3 carriers they used HTC phones, and for TMobile they used the galaxy S. Why not use the sensation to make is fair, or use galaxy S II for all 4 carriers? My guess.....someone knows TMobile is faster and wanted to put them in a crutch...just sayin lol. I'm currently doing a comparison of the big 4 in grand rapids cause I seem to never get 4G and it's making me mad!

While the ping times leave a little to be desired where I'm at (Florida) the download speeds are awesome in my area, but the speeds are just a perk, heh. I remember why I picked them every time I look at my bill. At $60 a month (w/taxes and fees) for my unlimited data*, texts, and minutes I'm doing ok compared to some of my friend's $100+ AT&T bills.

Me likes!
Besides the lack of iPhone usability, I have no issues with them. I've gone through some painful bleeding edge technology with the G1, the Vibrant and its crappy GPS issue, and now I'm testing out a Nokia Lumia 710 which has actually impressed me, minus the availability of WP7 apps. I like the fact that they're cheap as hell compared to AT&T or Verizon.

Can anyone shed some light on this? When I'm on the subway in Boston, I'm admittedly in awe of those that can use there phones while deep under the streets of Boston. The tunnels here are wired for the GSM carriers (and Verizon too think). The day I got my phone I was riding home enjoying going through all the features and settings of my brand new phone.Under the roaming section in settings, I noticed an option for GSM Data Roaming. Out of curiosity, I checked it off and within seconds, I had a 3G signal! Trust me when I say, for where I was in the tunnel, that NEVER happens. I tested it by sending texts and even making a call and both seemed to work.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Is this something new that maybe I've just never noticed in a Sprint phone before? How much is Sprint going to soak me for if I used it on a regular basis?

Please keep us informed. I live in North Texas, an area known for temperamental Sprint service. I get the roaming messages all the time. Even call Sprint to make sure its not a problem. I don't question the roaming with them, I just show concern as a customer that they won't charge me (Shoot Verizon sure did). But the reps get all hush hush when I ask about what service level is truly available in my area. Often, they refer me to a coverage map. If I wanted that I'd just Google it.

Been with sprint for years and never paid for roaming once. Look at your plan and see if roaming is included. It means domestic roaming. I believe if you talk on roaming for an exorbitance amount of hours or use a large about of data while roaming. I think if you google the amount for roaming that is excessive you'll find the answer. So use the roaming if it's available but don't watch an online movie well roaming.
Roaming is not the issue. The phone doesn't want to connect to it even when forced.

I think pretty much any carrier offers prepaid, if you bring a device, or buy one outright with no contract.
In that case I would look and see what kind of reception you get with sprint and tmobile. Only ones still w/unlimited data.
If one of those gets you a good signal I'd go with that. Otherwise straight talk or something like that.
