October Update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

Why no update for the October Security patch yet? Giving Verizon's long track record, no surprise. Here lately though, with the S7 and other devices, they have been pretty on the ball! Ominous prediction of holding off for better, more feature packed, update? Or, is this just Verizon being Verizon.

Too much for my blood, only working one in a family of 3. Won't go Verizon as that would look bad on my part working for an MVNO. And that earspeaker cloth though would get annoying. I will probably pick one up later on though. Maybe rig up a metal grill to replace the cloth.

There's 2 probable answers to the OP's question.
1). Samsung is busy getting Android Nougat to our devices. After all the ETA for Nougat on the S7 is In the next 2 months.
2). Samsung is busy dealing with the brand slander and profit loss from the Note 7 incident. But this is unlikely as they just released the S7 in a new color, meaning they're shifting their focus to the S7 because it's their only current flagship at the moment.
3). Newsflash, Samsung sucks at updating their phones.
Now of course those could both be wrong, but as far as I'm concerned those are the only plausible explanations.

Where in the world is the Verizon 5.1.1 update?

Seriously, why so long? This seems absurd even for Verizon.

Yes. Sprint got it a month ago.
I was thinking that it was taking abnormally long too, but since AT&T and T-Mo haven't gotten it yet, it makes me wonder. Especially since part of T Mobile's Note 4s have it and the others don't. (The ones with a different model number have them, but the original model numbers don't.)
Perhaps they are fine tuning stuff for the Qualcomm models and used Sprint as a guinea pig since Sprint barely has any subscribers anymore, it probably makes a great lab rat!

It is quite possible they are just going straight to Marshmellow. T-Mobile announced 6.0 update soon, perhaps AT&T and Verizon are doing the same.

I don't think so! I believe that we won't get 6.0 update in 2015. It's most likely that US carriers (VZW, ATT, TMB, and USC) will follow the international variants and push 5.1.1 update in 2015 (probably, it's due in October) and wait too long for the next big thing (M) sometime in 2016, after releasing it for the 2015 flagships (S6 and its family) in the next few months. However, I hope you're right.
Verizon always seems to be last and not fair to the older phones in the cue. To me we paid out our cash way before the S6 owners , no offense. I think the S4 will be the cut off so, why not be fair and start from that. Verizon, at least on the phone and in the stores, always bring up loyalty, show it!
But I wonder if it has anything to do that Verizon is a CDMA system

Leaks seem to be a thing of the past...rarely see them anymore. The 2 new nexus devices won't ship for another 3-4 weeks and that is more or less the official unveiling of 6.0, even though other Nexus devices are getting updates starting now. Then about a month after that you will see other devices getting updated. Samsung has to incorporate TW, HTC has to incorporate Sense 7, LG - LG Home, so those will take a little longer.

This is Verizon. We'll get 6.0 next year if we're lucky.

I read some carriers in Canada are receiving 5.1.1 on Note 4 via OTA.
AT&T got it today. I'm guessing T-Mobile will be next and We'll get it in January.

6.0.1 in February...

According to Pocket-Lint, Android 6.0 update is set to land on the Note 4 next month.
Of course.... who knows when VZW will acquiesce. Can't wait to move up from KK to a decents OS. :good:
Knowing Verizon they will be the last ones to release it. I'm betting we don't see it until at least April or may.
I doubt it will land on our devices in February. The international Note 4 will be getting it in February however.

If you recall, last year our Lollipop update came after some carriers updated the GS4, GS5 and the Note 3. That stupid virtual reality porn headset thing (oh, you can use it for stuff other than porn??) delayed our update.
Let's hope something comes up and delays it for the Note 5 and the GS6. LOL
I'm not going to hold my breath.
Me neither. They just released 5.1.1. It'll be months and months before they can be bothered to release marshmallow.

I still don't even have 5.1.1 and yet it was officially released from Verizon. I'm heavily considering going to a Nexus 6P or waiting to see what the next Nexus phone is in 2016. I love my Note, and will seriously miss the S Pen and note taking capability but I really hate how much unnecessary control Verizon has over the phone I own.
Samsung has delayed their Marshmallow upgrades by two months. Woohoo! I'm assuming the update will roll out the week after my last Edge payment when I switch phones. :eyeroll:
Then again, maybe that is a blessing. Usually the last update they give to a device is the one where they royally screw up the software to the point that you want a new phone anyhow.

I got the Note 4 for the large screen and the S Pen. It was only after using it a few times, I realized that my handwriting is terrible, I have no artistic talents at all, and the S Pen makes each of these more apparent. I haven't removed it from it's little home inside the phone since. The large screen is nice, though my screen has all sorts of quality control issues.
I too would like my next phone to NOT be tied to Verizon. I was fortunate in that I was able to get back to 4.4.4 when I realized what a train wreck 5.01 was, but it annoys me to no end that they let people sit with that on their phones for six month while trying to blame user habits for all of the issues with battery life and crashing. Total scumbag corporation move. I would leave Verizon if I could, but they're the only game in town here. Just the other day, I was explaining to my wife that my main reason for not liking this phone is that I've had it for a year and three months, and there hasn't been a useful update to it. The only updates for it have been awful.
My contract is up in October, and I'll be looking at Nexus and whatever they have at that point. Either that, or some other phone that will allow some control over what's on it.
I haven't attempted to update yet. I'm still on 4.4.4. I'm not going to update until I'm 100% sure that my phone will end up on 5.1.1. Even better if a safe upgrade path is created at some point.
I've upgraded to 5.1.1 and have not had any issues whatsoever. One thing I do though is perform a full factory reset after a major upgrade. Never had issues by doing this. I make sure my important stuff is backed up to SD card or Google drive. All apps auto install when prompted.

You might have answered this with saying Verizon is the only game in town but have you looked into Project Fi? It runs on Nexus devices and uses Sprint/TMo, I get a pretty nice employee plan with Verizon currently or I would gladly make the switch to Fi, a lot of friends back home in Michigan have and they say the service is awesome.
Still no 5.1.1 btw lol

I'm not sure if that's available where I am. I'd have to look in to it. I too get a decent discount on Verizon through my employer, and I'm stuck on this phone until the end of October. After that, I'll do my usual looking at all of the options, to find the best one. Unfortunately, cell phone providers aren't that good where I live. None of them are as good as Verizon was when I lived in the Chicago area a few years back.
Last night after talking to Verizon tech support again about not having the 5.1.1 update, I factory reset my phone after backing it up, and once I had it restored I checked for the update, it was there. In case anyone still wants it that doesn't have it, give that a try. Samsung Kies worked well for my backup/restore.

Nougat Official, where are you?

Anyone else tired of waiting. PLN beta is soooooo bad. Everyday I think about going back to 6.0.1 but I get so lazy lol. Nougat couldn't come soon enough. My phone freezes multiple times a day this last 7.0 beta is so terrible. Hurry up Sammy

Bull **** how long we are having to wait! Lol
waiting for this update to try the s7 edge.. In the meantime, enjoying the LG V20
We buy these phones to have a premium experience and they already rolled out N to entry level and mid level devices...Samsung won't ever learn. These phones are the slowest for updates. Ever since the S4.

Indeed! I've been using the high end Galaxy phones and tablets since the early days, and they've consistently screwed us on updates. One thing we can count on is that Samsung will give us the updates last, if we get them at all.
Yeah I'm not sure I'm going to get th s8, although sprint has me on the galaxy forever plan, I can get a new one every year and trade in my current one. I was really banking on google bringing the pixel to all carriers but these butt heads went Verizon only or buy unlocked. Maybe the next pixel phone will find its way on all carriers so we can lease it.
Apparalently the next Pixel may have waterproofing, but no edge. But tempting becuase of how bad Samsung is with keeping their devices up to date.

I'm not sure. I was on T-Mobile, sprint had a switch to sprint and we cut your bill in half promotion. So they cut my bill in half, took my note 5's and gave my wife and I both new s7 edge phones on the galaxy forever plan. I don't think we pay anything for it. If I did, I'm not seeing it on my bill because I was paying around 230 with TMobile now with sprint I'm paying about 135 lol.

Nothing for Tmobile for an update yet. Last we know it went into testing mode 2 weeks ago. Sprint was suppose to roll and update this month for LTE 3 carrier aggression. Who knows when we will get updated now. T-Mobile S7 users on Marshmallow are still on November security patch.
Sent from my SM-G935T using XDA-Developers Legacy app
It's all Samsung. Not Sprint. Even the G935U (Unlocked US) have not received the update. Samsung hates Americans, LOL! But really, I don't understand how Apple and Google can update the entire world on the same day and Samsung can't. Even their sorry excuse for voice (S Voice) or Cloud (Samsung non-existent cloud that can't be accessed through an internet site, only your phone....so **** if something happens to your phone...) is disheartening. I miss my Note7. It was running Marshmallow. I would just be happy if Samsung brought the UX to the S7. Same processors, same ram....should've pushed a Touchwiz update a long time ago. But they have our money and they really don't care about the US. We are a speck of their Asian customers with their billions in population. Plus, the FTC has to approve **** here left and right, and then the carrier bull****. They have to make a different update for each carrier and their bloatware. If only I could get the Honor 8 or P9 to work on Sprint, but their network is ****. Maybe the Verizon unlimited plan is exactly what I need.

Is it to late to buy a S7 Edge with only a year left on guaranteed security updates?

Getting tired of my iPhone 6S+ & fancied a change & wondered if it was to late to buy an Edge as Samsung will only guarantee another year of security updates.

No. It s gr8 phone But now you can think about Galaxy S8 or other phones like Xperia XZ Or LGG6
but if you want to taste something totally different go for s8
:good:
The nice part about a model such as the S7 edge is that, for the most part, most of the hardware issues should already be solved. (think the Note 7 batteries blowing up and causing fires, microphone issues with the Pixel, Battery issues with the iPhone 6 & 7).
Security patches and such can be an issue, but with nougat out on the S7's, and that it's been out on other devices well before this model, hopefully by the time that Samsung no longer provides security patches, most of the major problems may already be corrected.
The S8 looks like it's going to be one hell of a phone, it will receive updates / android upgrades long after the S7 will.
But, once the S8 becomes available, that is usually the best time to get the older model.
Stores will be trying to dump as much of the previous generation as fast as they can, to get more room for the new, shiny toy.
Tapatalk for Android - Works awesome on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
I'm on the fence too and am getting tired of my iPhone 6S Plus as well. I'd probably wait and see if stores try to bundle a SD card, wireless charger and the VR headset together if you're buying brand new. Or you may just find someone desperate trying to dump their phone for a dirt cheap price once the S8 is announced.
There's a difference between os upgrades (aka feature enhancements) and security updates. I'm confident you will get the later one still for some time as e.g. the S5 still receives security updates despite being already a bit more than three years on the market.

Thank you for that. Not doubting your word I thought Samsung only guaranteed security updates for two years?
You can check here by yourself: Firmware for Galaxy S5
Just if something is not guaranteed it does not mean they stop providing updates exactly after two years. I guess for this part it is at least two years after end of sale of the product and (former) flagships may be preferred regarding such policy.

Waiting for the note 9 also. But how we can see, Samsung is horrible with the updates. So I my next phone maybe won't be Samsung.
I won't and I'm done with Samsung. I'll not buy another phone in which the manufacturer locks down the bootloader and decides what applications we can and cannot have. And, unless and until others start doing the same and quit buying products that limit our ownership rights manufacturers are only going to continue pushing the envelope as to how much they can limit and restrict what we can and cannot do with OUR phones.

They lock them down because the providers don't want you messing with them, not so much Samsung's fault as it is the Verizon's, AT&T's, and the Sprints of the worlds, gotta get the unlocked versions from the manufacturer if it's important to you.
Back to the original question, I haven't seen any major upgrade that would make me want to change.

I would generally agree with you, but as I understand it Samsung locked down the bootloader on all Snapdragon variants, whether carrier locked or unlocked.
Just traded in my S8+ and got a Pixel 2 XL. I loved the hardware but just can't stand touchwiz, Bixby and most Samsung apps.

I won't. Samsung seems falling behind in the AI race too and based on the leaks, there will be no significant improvement in the S9 this time. I will probably stay with the S8+ and wait for a unique phone.

(im just joking)
Probably will. I have an S8+ and love it. I get why some of the folks here will be sticking with it -- especially since the S9/9+ represents almost no visual overhaul to the existing S8 line.
That being said, I actually had a free carrier Note8 that I sold immediately since it represented merely a side-grade (I put the money forth on a new MBP); I was intending to get an S9+ instead when the time came so following my plan, I'll be getting an S9+ to replace my S8+.
