Really bad system performance - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi, first at all sorry for my horrible english, but i really need help.
I've bought a samsung galaxy s7 edge, and it's lag, i mean, youtube videos is really smooth, even in 60fps, no frame skipping, games also run smooth.
But system performance is lag, animations stutter everytime, lags when scrolling... it feel like a 100$ device.
Ok youtube is fine, gaming is fine, speaker is quite good, screen is awesome, but nothing of these matter if the system performance is really bad, my mother has a huawei p8 lite and it's run a miles times faster.
I mean the device doesn't stuck, but every action i do without gaming/video is stutter, i really can't stand this, it's make me sick, why i would buy a 600$ device if i don't mind about lag? in fact i've bought this phone for superb performance.
This is not a really tiny situation, it is really important, i mean, if the system performance is really bad, all the others good things don't have sense for me, i really can't use the phone like this, ok i can use the phone like a old one, whatsap and call, but why i would buy a 600$ smartphone for that use? it has no sense.
I reset the phone yet, the system is up to date, i disable animation in developers option, i disable every app i don't use, every samsung app, and a few more.
Again, sorry for my horrible english and thanks for helping, regards.

Is it snapdragon or exinos ?

Exynos

I have exynos. It files. Scroll lag is because you are using chrome which lag on alot of devices. Use Sammy's browser amazing speed and supports ad block

Weird. Maybe try different region ROM? Like DBT or BTU?

I'm gonna try BTU rom, hope the lag will be fixed... i'm tired

No man, i even didn't mention chrome browser, i already know chrome sucks, i use samsung browser or uc browser, in fact the performance in browser is not bad, not 100% smooth but is ok.
I'm talking about transitions, scrolling in certains app, it lags a lot.

Just got my N1, kinda dissapointed....

I just came from an IP4 if that matters,
1.first thing, the speaker quality is not all that when Im watching a youtube vid or just a video I can barely hear it, music sounds good though...weird.
2.Phone call quality is very under par for me, sometimes I can barely hear the person on the other line, its very low, not sure if its just me.
3.I could have swore my first N1 was faster then this one I have know and I though 2.2 was supposed to be really quick? It just seems choppy, everything from the home screens to web browsing to the app store, just seems choppy...
Thats about it, I can live with it but I dont remember the N1 being like this...
Maybe you should Root and install a good ROM and install Launcher Pro or ADW launcher!
some people have that choppy scrolling, not sure why. try installing launcher pro, its free, its smooooth as can be. but that's for your homescreens. the browser is typically very smooth for me, but certain web pages, like web 2.0 html, are a little choppy for some reason (such as the new skin on this forum. switch back to old and look at the difference!!).
when you are watching a video, cup your hand so the sound bounces off your hand and toward you rather than just blaring out the back side of the phone... obviously you will have trouble hearing it then...
Laucher pro fixes almost EVERYTHING

Get Cyan 6.0, remove ADW launcher, install Launcher Pro and enjoooooooy....
also try to wipe your cache in recovery... once my n1 gets a lil choppy or sluggish i go into my recovery and wipe my cache and it speeds and smooths out again.. i use it tremendously so i kinda have to do it often

1. Embedded sound in a video has its own volume, which might be low. Also, try watching high quality videos - the speaker is better at high frequencies, and in low quality they're the ones that get cut.
2. Something with your phone, maybe? Try installing a ROM with kernel that includes audio hack. I can't keep my call volume on 100%, it bursts my ears even in very noisy environment.
3. Wipe everything, install Launcher Pro, and try again.
If you still don't like it after that - then sell it.

Right but his phone is brand new. I've experienced his issue first hand. I first flashed froyo, and the scrolling home screens was choppy as hell, not smooth at all. Launcher pro fixed it. But Google did something with froyo cause it doesn't always seen as smooth as it used to be.
However right now my phone is running superb, smooth scrolling every where, 55 fps easily
I've spent a good amount of time with the iPhone 4. I definitely prefer my Nexus, but here's the painful truth: The iPhone is smoother when it comes to scrolling. Sorry guys, it's just how it is.
You can make the Nexus smoother by using launcher pro or ADW launcher (ADW is smoother IMO), and load a fast rom like Cyanogen 6. It still will be a little choppier than the iPhone, though.
Android and iOS have a very different look & feel. Android does many things better, and is more capable, but iOS still has the advantage in terms of performance consistency & polish.
As a iPhone to Android switcher, it's just something you have to accept. In time, you'll get used to Android's look & feel, and then in all liklihood, you'll start to prefer it like I have.

Yup. I remember even seeing an Android OS developer say it is because iOS uses the GPU to handle those effects but Android uses software to rendering scrolling and other animations. When people got pissed off about that (we have GPUs, so why aren't they being used) he said it would be really hard to do on Android because they need to support a wide variety of devices.
I'm not sure why they couldn't just have an optimized code path for devices with the proper hardware. Hopefully it does actually get fixed at some point, but the fact that it hasn't been fixed yet makes me a bit doubtful.
I use LauncherPro like most other people here, but that's still not as flawlessly smooth as iOS dashboard scrolling, and it also doesn't fix scrolling in other areas such as ListViews.

my phone quality is fantastic. That is what I noticed first was the clear strong phone. True the speaker could be better but it's funny sometimes different videos or songs will be very loud as to how it was downloaded to begin with. I listen to music thru my ear phones and find it top quality sound. To Me the Nexus one is still the best android device made.

I agree there are certain parts of the UI that are not as smooth. But when I really sit down to compare its not as different as one might think.
So launcher pro easily seems to be smooth when using regular wallpaper, no live wallpaper, its gotta be hitting 50 fps.
Some lists have a choppy feel, but most actually do not. The settings list for example is smooth. But a list like the market is not, even after you allow the items to cache the data as it downloads. My point is I guess that really in the parts of the UI that ARE smooth, I feel its just as smooth as my ipod touch. It easily hits 50 fps in those parts of the UI and the home screens via launcher pro.
Google's official statement on their developer site is the android OS target is 60 fps. And they give examples showing that they are hitting 45 fps in first gen devices like the g1, and 55 fps in second gen devices like the nexus.
The web browser is another one. Most pages I visit scroll very smooth, easily hitting 45 fps. But certain pages with web 2.0 skins, like this forum's new theme, are choppy.
If you have a working build environment you should be able to see the fps in different UI parts of the OS. The adreno gpu isn't the best, but it definitely should be able to handle basic UI elements like what we see throughout android, and certain parts ARE optimized for smooth scrolling. The parts that aren't I guess could be a limitation of the gpu. But when I see certain web pages and lists that ARE smooth, I have to wonder if and why the choppy parts are just not optimized.
But the end of the day, when I see launcher pro sooth as butter hitting 50 fps, it makes me happy with this phone knowing it can do smooth scrolling, and maybe the not as smooth parts just weren't given as much attention in coding.
I put my third gen ipod touch next to my nexus, and most of the time they really do match each other. So I'm happy

G2 a bit laggy?

i just got my tmobile g2 and after putting my email in and unlocking it for my att sim, i feel like is a little bit choppy. the scrolling in the web browser (i dint even install flash) and the responsiveness of the buttons, it doesn't feel as snappy as the the iphone 4. i remember when i was using the n1 with 2.2 a while back is a bit smoother. is it because i been using the iphone for too long? or is it because its preloaded with too much app? i don't think thats the case since the android rom it self is stock. will the smoothness of the ui improves when you put in a different rom when permit root is possible in the future?
one more thing, is it possible to add touch focus to the camera and video recording?
I don't know what you did but the G2 is incrediblly snappy for me. No lags at all. I'm even playing some heavy duty games, like Asphalt (racing game) and I do not notice any lags at all.
thats what i was expecting too, i dint do anything to my g2 is out of the back from the store
flash comes pre-installed.
Have you tried rebooting?
What are your linpack scores?
I too find G2 a bit choppy (after playing with my friend's iPhone4) but I think that's just the way Android is. It can do so much more but we have to sacrifice some smoothness in return. Seems to lag a bit more on home screens. Browser, maps, other apps are just fine.
Also, with Android 2.2, you have to use a phone for a while for it to achieve it's full potential. Something about JIT getting better over the time.
I had the same thing happen to me after i put my work email through microsoft exchange active sync. i ended up putting the check email frequency to never cause i always check it every morning and night to reply and that seemed to clear up that issue. it might be a bug with microsoft exchange active sync or the email app itself. hope that helps.
Honestly after the G1 I didn't believe android could run without lag, but my G2 never lags at all. Well maybe twice I've noticed a tiny second of lag coming back to the home screen but that's it. That being said, one of my friends got a g2 too and his is a little laggy here and there... gotta be particular apps/widgets causing issues in my opinion... with him in particular I think its the anyRSS widget, but I could be wrong of course. I love this phone

Laggy? No, not at all. Not even a little bit. Nope. Whoosh, eat my dust iPhone. Uh, you don't have to install flash, it is preloaded...you could turn it off. Must be something wrong with your trying to run on ATT.

My g1 and my g2 BOTH lag blatantly when connected to cheap third party power cords fyi. They work fine on decent power cords, but glitch on the made-in-china, 3 chargers for 99 cents adapter cords.

The g2 certainly lags in the browser. On more complex webpages the scrolling is not very smooth at all. Load up a flash heavy site and its really bad. I find It really hard to control flash players and stuff. You have to zoom way in to get any buttons to register like on myspace music.
Set flash to "on demand."
Overall I have no lag. when i first got mine (oct 6) there was a delay when i tried to scroll the app drawer. The issues has a since disappear. This thing is snappy and blazing fast.
I think he might be referring to the "smoothness". Unfortunately all android phones have a tendency to stutter when scrolling.
There is no 2D graphics acceleration in the UI, as google did not want to have issues with the older 528mhz phones. Hopefully this will be resolved in 3.0.
The newer faster phones (Like the G2) can hide this with their raw CPU performance, but occasionally if its multitasking or doing something else it will stutter/lag. For now, Windows Phone 7, and iPhone's will always be "smoother". Until we get some decent UI acceleration .

do you have adobe flash 10.1 installed? Keep it on your phone internal memory not sdcard. If you are running stock browser or Xscope or skyfire (or even fennec) just clear the caches regularly. Otherwise there is no reason why the phone should be lagging. Also in settings, set flash player to "on demand" not "always"

I'm actually talking with flash off though and comparing the g2 side by side a captivate. So android's ui is not hardware accelerated but the galaxy s phones are able to totally mask that. Its not a big difference but a shame that the g2 processor doesn't keep up with the hummingbird. Now someone could explain to me that its because we are running 2.2 but I thought it was actually supposed to be faster than 2.1.
my phone is fast. there is a difference between lag and choppiness. lag is when there is a delay between when you tell the phone to do something and when it does it. choppiness is a lack of smoothness in scrolling. some apps are more choppy than than others. like the stock music app is way too choppy when scrolling lists. the browser is choppy. the contacts list is pretty smooth. but in terms of lag, I don't have any lag.

Yeah that makes sense. My captivate is not choppy in the browser at all and my g2 is slightly choppy. It seriously makes me sad.

I think most of the Web browser choppiness is due to the fact your use At&t network for browsing on the G2 which will only get you slow speeds since it can't use At&t's 3G. This would be expected. Try wifi and see if you still have the choppiness. I don't know about your button issue though.

Laggy/jittery scrolling in certain apps

Hi everyone. This is my first post on these forums.
I bought my first Android device about a month ago - a brand new SGS3 - and I've been very happy with my overall experience so far.
There's one thing though that bothers me and that is lag or jitter when I scroll in most apps.
I googled every way to make the phone faster over the last few weeks. Nothing gets rid of this lag I get when I scroll down in apps like Instagram, Facebook, Falcon Pro, Twicca, Friend Caster, etc.
On the other hand, scrolling in Reddit Sync or Tweedle is perfect.
What could be causing this lag? bad coding? is there a way to allow those apps more RAM usage?
Appreciate any suggestions. Cheers!
Many developers aren't taking Android seriously, therefore making crappy apps using crappy code. Facebook, however, is kinda nice after the 2,0 update but it's still got a long way to go before it's considered "good". Right now, it's not more than decent.

The only thing that bothers me is the extremely noticeable jitter when scrolling on Facebook 2.0. It was unbearable. So I switched to Friend Caster and it's better but by no means smooth.

If you think the Facebook app jitters/lags when scrolling, then you should download Tapatalk. God, that app's a damn mess, but I use it daily for my forum needs nevertheless.

Pretty unimpressed with my S6 (lag, lag, stutter ... )

I don't have a good first impression of my S6.
The stock rom eats 8G of the internal storage.
It has a terrible lag, and jitters all over the place. Even just scrolling up and down in the settings screen is laggy. The lag in Chrome gets very frustrating very quickly
Too much bloatware. A whole microsoft suite (among other things) that I will never use and cannot uninstall
Touchwiz launcher, its not really great
On the plus side
the finger scanner is good.
The screen is really nice, but I suppose rendering all those pixels is whats causing it to lag like crazy.
Pleased that samsung made a theme chooser. At last we can remove the awful default turquoise colours.
But I immediately know I'm going to have to root and put a custom rom on here to get it working to my satisfaction .... is there any ROM recommendations to remove all lags, stutters and bloatware?
Is it just me? I am surprised I don't see a ton of people complaining about this
Im on xtrestolite deo mod and have no of the problem i had with stock u could always get titanium backup and freeze all that bloat might help. I know that when i ran stock it would often run out of ram. Now i have betwewn 1 and 1.4gb free.
Wait for the Marshmallow update and judge it again then. Samsung redesigned the whole TouchWiz thing launcher, icons, performance everything. From what I read from the beta is really promising and fast.
Never saw any lag, stock or otherwise. I did occasionally have some low ram redraws on stock, but on roms those are long gone. Maybe take a look in your application manager at what's running and see if there's any unnecessary junk running that's eating your ram. Did it start or persist from any old software, or show up from new software ie updates?

Me too, no lag at all, with stock BUT... if you run MM BETA and then go back to 5.1.1 you will see a very "slow device"
This phone does lag like hell, I had one about 7 months a go and that wasn't too bad.
Picked one up last week and the difference is shocking now, have tried different launchers and no difference.
Makes me laugh how Samsung can't seem to make a phone that is smooth. I have even swapped this out for another one.
All this guff about no more lag in the press conference.
Never had any issues even before I rooted and put a stock modified rom, only thing I would have liked better is battery life, but I get a days use out of it atleast
No offense, but anyone saying the S6 doesn't lag or stutter must either not know what we're talking about or have low fps eyes ?. This phone is an absolute lagfest on stock firmware.
Try scrolling in Google+ or even Tapatalk and you'll see dropped frames all over the place.
Just about the only thing that helps is flashing a custom kernel and enabling enforced mode (try Unikernel for size). That makes a world of difference.
yes I have the s6 since 4 months now. before I had a oneplus one. this was fast. but the s6 is very Laggy. however it has the best benchmarks but the Ui it's definitely Laggy on every edge. so I had a lot of other devices before. for me the most qualcom devices are running smoother. but there are some other positive aspects on the s6

Lag?? U sure, mate? I'm using the S6 for more than a few months now and there is no lag in the UI. Maybe some minor frame drops occasionally (I'm sensitive to those , most people don't notice them), but no lag. It's not normal.
Mine is stock with some native apps disabled. Also I jave turned off the smart manager protection. And I can compare it with Nexus 5. I'v had many Android devices and I know what I'm talking about.

I've also owned countless Android devices (including Nexus). Most recently I came from an OPO and a Z3C before the S6. GUI lag/stutter is a pet peeve of mine with Android, and while the OPO was almost perfect after some optimization and the Z3C turned out OK, the S6 is frankly a joke in comparison. Especially considering its theoretically superior performance.

Do you always give up so easily?
I think I'll try the Samsung marshmallow firmware, cheers for the tip @Riardon ... if its just the same I'll try some custom roms.
I'm kinda glad others confirm the lag/stuttering and its not just me.
For comparison, the phone I am replacing is a S5 running Exodus rom, there is absolutely zero lag or frames dropped in any scrolling or animations. It really makes the S6 look bad. Not what I expected as the S5 is like 18 months old now.
Here is a quick video I made for the non-believers out there. S6 is on the left. It doesn't matter that the video is not in focus (because of my finger getting in the way), the point I am trying to make is scrolling should be smooth on a new, expensive Android phone, I am astonished at how bad it is on the S6. Other places in the phone are also bad, Chrome is the worst though.

Keep in mind, however, if you do root you will most likely trip the knox counter on your device. This could cause some problems with warranty, and you would not be able to use Samsung pay on the device. If these things don't matter to you. Rooting is okay.

Rooting/flashing ROMs/kernels can be done without tripping knox by using the engineering bootloader. You'll find great tutorials here on xda.
My S6 has never lagged, not even on stock. I found it to be smooth in generally and I am someone who looks at framedrops and any other possible slowdowns.
Also guys don't forget to check your apps. It may sound weird but some well known apps causing some extra lag on top of what TouchWiz has. For example I found out that SwiftKey on my devices creates some extra lag and it's slower than other keyboards. Some apps are just not optimized well and this the reason some guys see worse lags and stutters than others. This one is tricky to determine those apps but you have to experiment. TouchWiz as it is now yes it's laggy but not worse than older TouchWin on S5 for example. Still needs work but Marshmallow is promising. Wait until then guys you may surprised pleasantly. Unfortunately some apps on Android running like sh***t and we blame the phone sometimes. And remember to always keep your phone at minimal. Disable all extra stuff you don't use and use only the apps you actually use often or truly need. This is for all phones not only for this one.

If I understand correctly using the engineering bootloader results in the loss of use of the fingerprint scanner.

Correct. So worth it imho though.

How do you guys can live with the lag on the exynos version ( not trolling ) ?

A week ago I got myself a s8 ,I have an iPhone 7 Plus and I’m so sick of having to deal with this size , it feels like a brick, plus I don’t like the “psysical button “ , I wanted to get rid of it so I gave the s8 a try , and so I did and I loved the design , the screen , the camera ( night shots are better than the iPhone 7 in my opinion ) but the performance is just awful , innaceptable for a flagship , choppy scrolling , the framerate skips like crazy sometimes , it just ... lags :/
I couldn’t believe it after reading the rave reviews , so it turns out that the European version has the Exynos cpu instead of the snapdragon 835 and the benchmarks don’t tell the whole story , I tried uninstalling unnecessary apps , deactivating bloat apps , deactivating the side panel , using nova launcher ( without using root or freezing apps or something like that , but it didn’t help , did you guys just get used to the lag ? :/ have you read that the performance on the note 8 is better (the example version of course ) and if it is , so you think it’s because of the extra ram ?
I’m hopeful that Samsung will make the performance better with the Oreo update but that update will probably come in December / January , what are we supposed to do until then ?
Coming from a Huawei Mate 9 and resently activating my note 8(snapdragon) it ain't much better. Nothing about this phone is butter smooth.
Will be getting mate 10 next month. First Samsung since note 3/4.
Not horrible but expected more with specs/company
I honestly don´t know what you are talking about. Maybe I just don´t notice it.
I know up to the Galaxy S6 the Samsung Flagships were always lagging like crazy with StockROMs, but at least since the S7 it´s smooth like other Flagships. (Always talking about Exynos)
Where do you experience the lag? I just checked Twitter, Menus and browser an couldn´t notice any
I use Nova Launcher, which definitely improves the experience a lot. Combined with changing animations to 0.5x it almost never feels laggy. I rarely switch back to TouchWiz to see if it has improved, but always end up going back to Nova. I also use Gboard instead of Samsung keyboard, which also feels snappier and has better prediction.

Same here ! No more lag with this setup
I have the dual SIM international version (Exynos) since around launch date. I don't recall any instances of lag. On rare occasions there is the odd app crash.
I have not used an iPhone for any length of time to be able to compare, but we have a couple of iPads, one of them is relatively new and when using it for general browsing, reading, etc, I don't feel that I get a markedly better or smoother experience. Both S8 and iPad just work very well.

I have an iphone 7 256gb Red Edition and my S8 is no more laggy than my iphone, yes iphone can lag too. BTW, iphone is for sale. You need to be more specific where you see lags if you want people to help. I get lag when scrolling on Piano Tiles 2 but that's because he's a ****ty developer but the game is awesome. Need way more details.
I have exynos version with custom rom and i have no lags. If you what have fone with no lags at all buy iPhone. Every android have Little lags and glitches.
DEVELOPER OPTIONS (see screenshot) transition animation speed 0.5x
I read a post in the Essential Phone forum:

To make it more snappy, go into developer options and set the transition speed to .5 instead of 1. That should make things seem to zip."
I've attached a screenshot, but my transition animation speed is still at default 1x (i.e., not the 0.5x recommendation).

its more like the screen "trembles" , they just don't feel smooth , it feels like the phone it's at its limit, it's just "choppy"
Facebook is a horrible app regarding optimization. I also noticed horrible lags there. Ended up uninstalling and i am now using it via chrome and its great. No lags, bettet battery etc.
I dont use twitter but instagram is fine on me no lags at all. As for playstore nothing can be done about it. It was always that way.

All of this + youtube hdr playback above 720p. Seriously it should be fixed or bye bye samsung this time.
P.S The ``tremble`` is called stuttering and if you search from google you will found tons of users having exactly the same issue. In my oppinion the exynos processor throttles a lot due to overheating. Cant proove it though cause am no specialist on this matter

Lets say i visit www.rt.com with the browser , as soon as the comments the advertisments appear , performance is halved and it sucks to browse in such a way.
No lag for me, if there was then I wouldn't have the phone, I am EXTREMELY demanding. But then I dont have **** apps like twitter and facebook that are VERY badly written and drain the battery like theres no tomorrow. I also use nova so cant comment on whether any lag might be touchwiz related, not used touchwiz since my S3.

can you properly play 1440p hdr videos from youtube or even 1080p hdr without stutter and frame skip?

Weird thing-- I'm using one of the YouTube background play-enabled apps.. God I wish I could remember which one, but I got it here. Has some theme options, using one with a back background. I experience absolutely no lag with 1440phdr with this app.. No such luck with the base Youtube app
After cleaning up as many services as possible with Package Disabler, the rest of my interface lag has vanished (even in TouchWiz)
Last couple days have seemed like I have finally found the device the S8 is supposed to be, buried under the inefficient bloat and bogus it ships with.. Of course, I'm on the 835, so this may not have meant anything to begin with haha

Snapdragon isint much better either. My roommate got a pixel 2 XL and his phone is smoother (with all apps running) than my freshly factory reseted S8.
i just changed my iphone 7 with s8 exynos , i see no different in performance , in fact i loved s8 more , i can't deny that s8 have a little of lags but from my experience ios has lags too , i have 6:30H screen on time in my s8 , i never dreamed about that in my iphone 7 , in iphone I only got 5H screen on time
This is assuming the iPhone 7 suffered no lag or stutters under iOS 11. I came from the iPhone 7 and use to notice stutters while scrolling through contact lists and even the home button had delays. I've got Nova Launcher set up on my current S8 and stock rom with tons of apps and never formatted since I've been using it for the past 3months. I won't lie I did come across occasional stutters but I find it way more fluid than the experience I had on iOS. The list scrolling, app animations, etc is really smooth.

I agree to a certain extent. I used the Xperia XZ1 Compact for a month on Android 8.0. The interface felt faster than the S8 given the same developer options. You can speed up the S8 if you want by lowering the screen resolution (settings>display). But then you wouldn't have the higest (other than S7) screen DPI ever seen on a phone.
