Battery and signal strength on 7.1.1 - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently made the jump to 7.1.1 which has been really excellent and stable. I haven't been getting the best battery life with it though and my signal strength is consistently weak (even though the phone reflects 3/4 bars LTE most of the time). I am currently on project fi
I am not sure what's causing this buy is anyone else having similar experiences?

I had that problem. I flashed the 7.0 bootloader and radio and its better.

What kind of improvement did you see?

Its hard to say really. At first it seemed like it helped but now my phone is back to not being able to hold 4g in weaker areas. Just not as bad as the 7.1 radio. Its fast and easy to flash a different radio and bootloader. You dont even have to erase anything. U literally have nothing to lose. If your signal acts worse just flash back or try another radio/bootloader.

T-Mobile Wing Signal Strength

I hope somebody can help me with this. I have a T-Mobile Wing and I can't get a signal in my office. I have no office phone to use either, so its really annoying because I miss some important calls. Also other employees in my office have AT&T and Sprint and there phone work fine. I've even had Sprint just a few years ago. At first I wasn't able to get a signal and then suddenly my signal maxed out in the same are. I'm not going to be able to opt out of my contract either. So I was wondering if anybody knows of any tweaks that can boost your signal strength. I'm willing to try anything and I'm only a slight noob (I recently just flashed my rom, first time I tried I bricked my phone but I got it back up and the second time i worked like a charm). So if anybody knows of any hacks or anything like that, that could work I will thank you forever.
P.S. No those little stickers on the phone don't work.
you can try to flash different radio into your wing. In my experience, 3.18.9 has the best performance.
Really?! Okay a few questions. I'm slightly a noob so how would I go about doing that? What would I have to change in my rom? Do you have any links that could show me how to do that? And finally I have flashed my rom by I was just changing the pagepool settings, will this flash effect anything I have already changed?
Flashing the radio just like flashing a new rom, but it only change the radio and the other is still intact. You will have to hardSPL your phone and then find the radio.nbh file, and flash it. You will have to do some readings regard hardspl and flashing. I personally don't want to give further instructions since I don't want to be blamed if you brick your phone or something. The other members had written very good guides (which should be much better than mine) on flashing and other issues.
Radio ROM 03.21.90 has the best signal with extended battery life. My signal improved and my battery lasts way much longer! Believe me on this.

I agree with the battery life, but on signal strength, 3.18.9 is better on me. I actually tried them two as the same time and same place. I flashed one and then tried the other. In my classroom, 3.21.9 has nothing but 3.18.9 has a bar. My guess is that it also depends on your rom. I heard different roms have different results. Anyway, try some of them and you will know what's best for you

Is the new radio from DMD64 working for you?

I installed the new radio yesterday and I haven't had the chance to see if it increases battery life because I was using my phone more than usual today, but has any1 noticed any improvements in battery life?

It seems slightly better (could be placebo), but I do notice that after about 14 hours or more, my 3G/network connection would suddenly disappear (nothing to do with the settings) and I would need to reboot for it to return to normal.
Signal strength seems alright. But I did not test the wifi.
Been using it for a week or 2 now and no issues so far, haven't necessarily noticed any difference in battery life but signal strength does seem to be boosted even if only slightly.
Been using the new radio for a couple weeks here too. I haven't noticed any change in battery life whatsoever. T-Mo signal is ****ty inside the building I work in and that hasn't improved. Signal outside may have improved. No 3G here to test.
Short version: It doesn't seem to hurt, so why not?
I have been using the new radio.
I flashed it on my G1, as well as my girlfriend's MT3G.
I live in a brick building which eats cell phone signal for breakfast.
I must say, since I've upgraded, I get better signal, as well as more reliable voice and data connections on my G1. I have EDGE service only at my house.
I have also noticed better 3G signal when I am at work, and I actually am able to access EDGE from the basement at work (I previously had no signal in the basement).
Now my girlfriend still seems to be having issues getting reliable voice and data connections, although her idle signal strength seems to have improved, at home, at least, on her MT3G.

POLL: Who flashed the new radio and liked it better than the stock?

So I have seen countless complaints on battery and reception regarding the new radio. I personally haven't upgraded it, but seeing as I have seen so many complaints, I'd like to hear if anyone liked the new radio.
I'm not sure if it's the ROM, peoples' location, or what is causing the issues for some people, but so far I am getting an all-negative reaction which makes me not want to update it at all...
Any thoughts specifically regarding the new radio??
i live in ohio and the radio update has improved my signal...at work i would never get an 3g signal and after 8 hours would basically need to throw my phone on the charger...after the update i feeel like i got an extended batter i never leave 3g coverage while at my desk its great i think the main thing it does is attain the 3g better thus improving battery through a quality signal...i am interested to see if it does have someting to do with location as ive seen the mass negativity about this radio update...my opinion people get cold feet about the radio and subconciously start hating it
i flashed the .03 radio. everything seems the same same same
The new radio has GREATLY improved my battery life, but I really cant tell any difference in reception.

Kind of agree. I can't tell a difference in reception but I believe it has improved my battery.
My battery keeps a charge a lot longer. Also since I've been getting better reception
Im running thr new radio with damage's rom, battery seems wayyy better and signal as well..internet browsings faster too.not sure if thats cause of the new radio or rom.goood stufffff
I haven't really noticed any difference in battery life or signal, not better but not worse either.
Don't really notice any difference after flashing the new one.
+1 better reception and battery here...
phx, az
Didnt seem to kill the battery any faster, I dont think.
It didnt seem to improve my reception
it actually seemed to make my data slower. im still testing this.
I have nothing against it, but Ive had sprint for 10years in my area and after a few months I knew how many bars I had at certain locations.
well after the upgrade I seem to get LESS reception (bars) then before. I dont experience dropped calls or missed txts, etc. so I see no point to go back to the old one. doesnt bother me
as far as battery life I have a 1800mAh battery they still hasnt had but maybe half a dozen charges so i cant really give you any better of an idea.
My battery life is a little better. My reception is not any worse or better really. I see less "bars" but bars don't mean much. My db reading is -75 in my office, which is the same as with the old radio. I do notice my data rates went from about 1100-1200 down to about 600-800 down at best. Upload rates went from 700-800 to 500-600. So I notice slower data which is a bummer.
my battery life drastically improved. i haven't noticed data difference.
I upgraded the radio at the same time I upgraded to the newest Fresh Rom. Shortly after I loaded damage control.
At first I thought my reception was worse but then noticed the signal strength bars only had 4 instead of 6, which makes it look like less signal. But my internet seems noticably faster (could be the 2.1 Rom) and I'm not dropping calls and reception is clear on phone calls.
As to battery life; again hard to say with the new OS, bit its not any worse than before. Still have to charge every night under normal use and sooner with some extra Pandora action tossed in.
I'm averaging 2.5 - 3% battery per hour with the new radio, but I also upgraded to a 2.1 ROM at the same time.
With the 1.5 ROM I was running and the old radio I was averaging 4 - 4.5% per hour.
I can't definitively say if it was the ROM or the radio that made the difference though.
I'm running an Andida 2000mah battery too.
-Daryel
I haven't noticed a difference either way...I went back to stock for the heck of it and everything seems the same...
Meh, its good. I feel like I am getting better battery life. Not sure though. Give or take.
I live in an area that no carrier has great reception, so yeah.
hey guys thanks for all the feedback. i was wondering about this too and since im on this thread i guess i can ask about what .zip file i should use for my rom? or is it the same? im running damageless. thanks!
I say there needs to be an experiment... would the same "differences" come up if a "radio update" came out that only changed the #'s of the baseband version, but said it was better?
just a thought.

radio improvement

Anyone know what the best way is to improve reception? I have a hero, my sister has a moment. In the same room right next to each other over a period of 10 minutes, my hero had 1 bar, while her moment had all full bars. Something's not right.
I am running ZenEXP 0.9.5 with the Radio Rom Update from 2.1 provided by Damageless (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681703)
bars are a poor reading of signal. If you really want to compare, check the actual signal strength in "Menu>Settings>About Phone>Network". The higher value (lower negative number) is better.
I have noticed the original radio 1.04.01.09.21 works better than the newer radio in my area.

I agree. But on the stock radio, my battery drains like it's going out of style.
I have never upgraded my radio and I get 15-25 hours easy depending on usage. If you are getting less battery life than that, you are in a poor area.
And bars don't mean anything. Check signal strength.
Also some radios work better in some areas then others.
Try using a different radio.
I use the desire radio that flips release for cdma hero and it gives me a muchh better signal then the newest radio that was released.

Phone is now terrible. Flash Nougat CP/CSC on latest Oreo?

After the Oreo update, my s7 active has really sucked. A lot. It overheats, battery drain is through the roof, it lags constantly, the camera takes a solid 20 seconds to respond at times, and it just generally sucks. The problems sometimes seem to be heat related, as it slows down even more when on charge. I'd seen on another forum that flashing the older CP file would fix the heat issue. Anyone have any luck with this? I haven't done much android modding since the days of ICS/JB/KK, before knox and all of that. Would doing this brick me or trip knox? Any alternate suggestions besides ditching the awful carrier AT&T is in favor of a lesser evil that allows me to use a third party phone with WiFi calling or VoLTE support? That's all that's keeping me with ATT branded phones now, as where I live has little 3g reception for an urban area, so having to drop down on calls without VoLTE is a no-go for me.
Thanks guys!
Have you tried doing a hard reset on the phone first? It sounds like you updated to Oreo with all of your junk on it. No wonder it caused so many problems!
There isn't a way to downgrade from Oreo.
No way to downgrade from nougat but as I understand it, isn't it just the boot loader that can't be rolled back?
I'm not sure if what you're proposing is actually compatible but you could always check.
Best way to keep all your bits and pieces in my opinion is Samsung backup.
Just did it myself and I am getting better battery and cell signal than I ever have! On a two+ year old phone!!
I just got 4 God damn days of light use between charges!

Sorry, been away for a few days. I have done a reset and it works alright for a day or two then back to total suckage. I managed to drop 55% battery in a matter of two hours this afternoon with moderate use. Bright side, it was cold outside, so I got a nice hand warmer. What did you try? Flashing the older CP/CSC?
I was under the impression that the older OS wouldn't work with newer bootloader.

Yeah, I've done two hard resets so far. No luck, but I'm backing it up again for one more shot.

Before doing anything drastic like attempting to flash CSC from a previous version, have you tried clean flashing the following rom in latest modified Odin including all relevant wipes?
G891AUCS4CRJ1_CL13639069_QB20030093_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT_meta
My original comments were more towards the fact that radio behaviour on this rom has been totally different for me than every other version I've had on the device, as a result I seem to be getting much better battery life. I'm not sure what CSC it comes with, but it is certainly acting in a different fashion to all previous versions: Lots more time with 4G icon, less with LTE. Far more readily jumping over to 3G when the signal is stronger etc.
After charging my device is still getting hot, but not during general use. I think my battery is just dying a slow death - it only has 3000mah capacity now. A real shame that it isn't replaceable without defeating the waterproofing.
If the Sonim XP8 were a little bit better specced I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Nice, I'll give that one a shot. I was going to flash a clean install of CRJ1 tomorrow after it downloaded. Don't have very fast internet here. I appreciate the input!!!
If it weren't for AT&T restricting VoLTE to their branded phones, I'd jump ship to oneplus or anything in the pixel lineup. Or the LG g7. Or literally any third party phone that wouldn't force botched updates and bloatware down my throat constantly and re-enable crap I've disabled with every update. But where I work has great LTE signal, very very little 3g/HSPA+, so not having VoLTE isn't an option. Same for wifi calling where my parents live, poor signal so no use having the phone when I visit if I can't use wifi for calls/texts.
Currently using my old g5. Whew. I forgot that this thing would fry eggs with light use. But at least the battery is replaceable. Tried replacing my aging S7 active battery on my first one. Four days later the bottom half of the screen died. Oops.
