Does Moto G4 Plus support Samsung Gear VR headset? - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

I'm looking for a VR headset, and I want to know whether the Samsung Gear VR headset is compatible with Moto G4 Plus or not. Kindly help me.

Yes Moto G4 is VR capable. Any phone a gyroscope is VR capable.
For running a VR app, all that a phone must have is a gyroscope. It is something that helps a phone to judge rotations.
Moto G4 comes with a gyro. The resolution is 1080p which is decent. The screen is decent too, but the pixel density is scant. Just 401 pixels per inch. For VR I would say anything above 450 ppi is okay, the more the better.

Why don't we have a gyro sensor?

That's a bummer, the Moto X Play doesn't have a gyroscope, nor does it have a pressure sensor (barometer). Those two sensors are usually included in the lowest priced phone. I guess, it will mean no PhotoSphere and CardBoard for us.

I can live without Barometer as I can check the data of my location using internet and apps. But the lack of gyro sensor is a big NO for me. I was down for this phone and I overlooked Snap 615 because of the monster battery. It's a shame that you wouldn't be able to click photospheres with this awesome sony 21mp sensor. There was a tweet from motorola that gyro could be there in hardware but it may be disabled. So we will really know for sure after Moto X play teardown. If this has gyro then it can be enabled with some coding. Moto X style on the other hand has IR sensors, gyro etc. But Moto X style battery is not gonna be great. Looks like I might have to wait 1 more year to upgrade my phone.

You can still use cardboard, but not able to rotate the screen with the phone.
I mostly use the cardboard for movies and computer games, I don't miss or notice the lack of gyro.

No there is no option for google cardboard installation on google play for this phone
I just returned my Homido VR box back to the store.Tried it with my old moto g 4g (gyroscope) and with the moto x play and it totally sucked. You can only play some simple demo games with the graphics of a playstation 1.The most anoying thing is that you will spend most of the time putting your phone in and out of VR box to control simple things. Most apps dont support a controller yet and are frustrating to use. I realized i dont mis anything with VR on android and decided to wait a few years.

Sounds like you'd be trading more performance for a better camera if you went with the G4. It's kinda up to you with what's more important.

Camera is a priority but performance stands higher.
But the Z2 also costs 50$ more so I can't decide.

All I hear is that OP5 won't have daydream just because the screen is IPS-LCD, not AMOLED like Pixel or Pixel XL. Daydream only enable by Google when the phone use 2K AMOLED screen. IPS-LCD won't get any even it has the same resolution.
So, probably OP5 won't feature any Daydream.
No amoled? Are you sure? Are they going to sell a much more expensive handset with no amoled? That would be a huge mistake! I'm really willing to buy one, but with no amoled I won't do it!

That's the first time I've read any source claim that the screen wouldn't be AMOLED, so what's your source? Whether the phone has QHD seems to be in grave doubt though. Next week and all will be revealed.

The OP5 will definitely have an AMOLED, dont worry
It will be an amoled, it might just be 1080p tho...
It will most probably have the same screen as Oppo R11 which is a 5.5" Full HD AMOLED. I'm so very disappointed. This OP3 screen is horrible in VR -- it's slow, the pixels are huge, there's the glow that shouldn't be there...
It has 401 pixels per inch, which a bit lower than HTC Vive & Oculus Rift at 455.63 PPI which both felt way too pixelated for me when I tried them. I returned the Vive for that reason, VR content was not enjoyable at all. Samsung Gear VR with the S8 is more acceptable and with that I can see the stuff on screen better and I don't have to go very close to the objects like with Vive & Rift & OP3. The new Pixels should have 2K+ screens AND be faster to meet the Daydream specs, so I'll personally just wait for those and go test when they come out...
These HMD's for Windows Mixed Reality have screens that have much more usable PPI at 704.66: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/acer-hp-windows-mixed-reality-dev-kits,34389.html
1440x1440 resolution, 2.89" size, 90 hz refresh rate..they're most probably LCD, though, not AMOLED, so it remains to be seen how good they are for VR/AR/MR.
TL;DR: If the OP5 had a 2K screen it would have 33% better pixel density which would vastly improve VR usage over 1080p. Better to wait for the new Pixels if you're like me and would love to use mobile VR
Hey guys, Does anyone know about the Daydream support for OP 5? Before it was just speculations, now the phone has launched does anyone have any update regarding this topic? I have searched the net but no one has mentioned anything about VR. Infact no one has covered this point in their review etc.
Thanks!

No one covered because there is no official support. Officially the OP5 is not compatible with Daydream, and OP does not sound interested. It is unknown (at least to me) if this phone covers one of the requirements: a surface temperature sensor. Since the main purpose of the OP line is to provide best processor/memory for less price, is likely that this sensor is absent.
That being said, there is a thread about how to force a rooted OP3T to support Daydream. Should be the same with OP5.

Gear VR vs Cardboard for VR movies with S8

So I bought an S8 and I am quite happy (my only complain is that the touchscreen is not as responsive as the HTC 10)
I tried it on my Fiit VR with AAA VR player and it went 100% full-screen + edges!!
Yes the picture quality is better than with the LCD of HTC 10, but not tremendously better.
I could buy a used Gear VR for S8 next month, though even used they don't come cheap (80$), so is there a better image quality than with a Fiit VR or any good Cardboard headset knowing in the end it's the same S8's screen that will play the movies?
Again it's for VR movies only that I ask, not for games

Proper Motorola replacement for Moto X Pure (Republic Wireless compatible)

Motorola sent us a Z2 Play as a replacement for my wife's X Pure. It seemed on the surface like an upgrade, but I looked up some specs and benchmarks on passmark and phonescoop and I'm second guessing our decision.
I don't think they'll go for something higher priced like a Z3 Play (It's $100 more than what we paid), but I'm looking for suggestions on what I should ask them for. It has to be a Motorola and it has to be compatible with Republic Wireless.
I realize no matter what, we're losing out on the camera. I have yet to see anything close to the 21MP camera on the Pure. I also don't know if they would give us a credit for the full amount and we could buy the higher priced z3 play.
Advice greatly appreciated.
Here are the supported BYOP phones for RW.

The speaker isn't as loud on the z3 play but it sounds really clear. The screen isn't quite as bright in bright sunlight but the battery life is so much better with the z3 play. I love it. Am not sorry I got it. Best buy met Amazon's price. I just wish I could figure out a mod compatible case to use with the battery pack they throw in with the deal. Can you tell what I think you should do?!?
