Got my pixel XL early and all I can say is........ - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Wow. Coming from a LG V10, which I loved, I feel like this is def a decent step forward. I have yet to see how batter power is but for now I'm impressed with the software and how fast and smooth the phone is. I haven't started gaming on it yet. Mainly setting up apps for work. I got mine this morning at 10.

I'm coming from Nexus 6P and i'm equally impressed!! Enjoying it so far!!!

I haven't gotten mine yet, but I'm coming from the Note 7. I hope I am equally impressed

Coming from N7 and I am sooooo happy right now. Super super fast and smooth absolutely no lag like N7 had. All I can say is WOW (copied OP, but so true)

I like the pixel xl MUCH more than I do my 6P. I especially like the size and screen more. I always thought the 6P was too big/too tall though.

Haven't really put much thought to it but it does have a crack in top left of screen. Still works fine just hairline crack. Huawei wanted 163 to repair. Decided to get pixel xl and couldn't he happier. Best Android phone I have owned and I have had all the top tier devices.

I work for a Verizon retailer, we got our stock in today and I really enjoyed messing with it.
Makes it REALLY hard to wait for mine to ship from google in November....

I've got a November ship date also and checked out an XL today. Really nice phone. I think we'll get it earlier than stated.

can hope

I share everyone's sentiments here. I received my XL today.
A few things...
1) Coming from a 6P that I love, I am in love with the size of the XL. It doesn't feel like a big phone. It's not unwieldy and it feels more pocketable. I know the size difference isn't huge on paper, but it's more tightly engineered. It doesn't feel top heavy. It's just more comfortable to hold. It doesn't feel a lot bigger than an iPhone 7.
2) I'm not in love with the black, though. It's more of a grey. It's not ugly, I just wish it was darker.
3) I know it's early, but damn it's smooth. No hiccups or stutters on my end.
4) I was using the Pixel launcher on the 6P. I love it.
5) Like the 6P, I enjoy the fingerprint reader on the back. It just makes sense. It even feels better here.
6) The hardware is flawless. Samsung and Apple flawless.
7) This started with Nougat, but I enjoy how the contact pictures show up on my 2016 Impala infotainment center. Other manufacturers have had this, so it's a nice addition.
8) It smelled good when I opened the box.
9) The lack of waterproofing is a bummer, but whatever. I've never dropped a phone in water. (I do have my iPhone 7 in my shower. I use it only as an iPod)
10) I really like it. Google did a hell of a job.
11) I know it won't be mentioned much, but Google nailed the launch. 2 weeks between preorder and delivery! Last year we waited nearly a month. I think the same thing happened with the Nexus 6. Everyone lauds how Apple does it, Google just did it too.

this part I disagree with! lol I ordered day one and have a month wait.
other then that, with playing with it at work I'd agree.

Someone Please comment about the audio quality

^Especially the headphone Jack

I listened to music for an hour or so yesterday with the headphone jack. It sounded fine. But I admit that I'm not super picky in this area.

And some of us got them a day early. I like your review of the smell of the box. LOL. Yeah day and I'm even more impressed with the phone. looking for cool ways to use Google assistant.

Yeah I havent had a reason to use headphones. Speaker phone is loud and clear though.

I intitially balked about the screen shrinking, then I remembered how I was initially against getting the 6P due to it's large screen size lol.

Just so I don't sound like a 'fanboy'...
One thing I find a little annoying on the pixel is that the auto brightness adjuster makes the screen too bright for my tastes.
I have the brightness slider almost all of the to the left.
Not a big deal, but I'm not sure why the default brightness is so high.

same here
Was very exited to get my Pixel phone earlier than stated. Speaker phone sounds loud and clear and audio sound in general was great.

Everyone Who Loves Their Nexus 9 Post here

As I see there are a lot of of negative posts about this tablet, I wanted to give some prospective buyers a chance to see some positive posts about this tablet.
Of course no device is without its faults, however I truly believe this is a great piece of hardware regardless of some of the inherent flaws. Those have been mentioned many times so please post what you love/like about your new Nexus 9.
I personally love the size. I think its just right!
I love the screen, WiFi speed, and how smooth lollipop is on it.

ROFL!! I thought about that afterwards but I was too late! I feel like Tobias from "Arrested Development".
I love the perfect screen, the build quality, the sound, the speed, the looks and Android Lollipop.

I think I'm keeping this a long time (two years for me would be long).
Excellent screen, excellent sound. The whole size/shape/dimensions are perfect for me. Other than the terrible power and volume buttons I think the build quality is outstanding.
Very happy with it. Now if I can just get a decent cover for it I'll be set.
I had requested a cancellation for my order which couldn't be process because it had been shipped by then.
My plan was to refuse delivery so FedEx would return the package and I'd get my refund that way. Then I thought: "I'm still returning it, but why not just take a look, only a look and that's all".
Then I opened the package and.... love at first sight.
Then I inspected the hardware and didn't notice any bending at the back and the so called "light bleed" issue is nothing significant that would hamper the user experience. I'm so glad my order couldn't be cancelled.
Now, don't even get me started with the 50% fire sale by HTC...
I got mine today, minimal back flex... Which doesn't bother me personally. Minor lightbleed but this effects all IPS displays really... Its about as bad as my N5 and N7 which are only noticeable with black screens.
I had an eargasm when I heard the speakers, I can absolutely positively never go back to back or bottom facing speakers.
Screen is gorgeous, absolutely sharp and super crisp. Colors are nice, whites are solid.
I'd buy it again if I had too.
I never canceled, but with all the negative reviews I anticipated having to return the device.
Well, I received my device promptly and immediately began searching for all of the build quality flaws I had heard so much about. I was not able to find a single flaw. My buttons work great, 0 light bleed, no back flex ... This device will easily be with me for the next few years.
Cheers to Google and HTC for delivering on my high expectations!
Love mine despite minor light bleeding but not enough to bother me so not risking returning it to get one far worse. Screen is great, lollipop is fantastic, buttons are easy to press with my fingers and no panel squeaking.
Does get hot at times but hopefully an update and case will fix that.
Sent from my Nexus 9
I love mine. The battery enables my Nexus 9 to (almost) outlast my Nexus 7. Lollipop is fluidly smooth and looks fantastic on screen which might I add, doesn't suffer any serious light bleed. I watch films in bed and they look and sound great.

Mine is awesome. No light bleed, flex, lag, etc. Battery life was mediocre at first but is steadily getting better with time. I've been mystified by all the negative reviews.
I love my new Nexus 9! Best tablet for the price!

Loving mine so far, first tablet I've had since original ipad that I sold a couple of years ago.
Awesome beast . loving it .
I got mine in a 16g size and love it. I'm on the fence about returning it because the 16g space is too small but I don't want to pay full price for the 32g. Please understand I REALLY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT it except the small space of the 16g, I just cringe thinking about the 32g price. I have less than 2 weeks to decide.
What should I do? If I keep it could I end up hating myself later for having the 16g but I'm not entirely sure.
BTW I picked mine up at bb in launch day.
jumpin' on the nexus 9 love bandwagon...
im a simple little cuss.
coming from a launch day moto xoom, the nex9 is such a joy!
absolutely zero issues. i do plan to sell this and get the lte model but that just shows my love for this device...
I'm getting mine replaced but I like a lot about it. I actually really like having the 4:3 aspect ratio and the letterbox when movies doesn't bother me that much. Lollipop looks great and I really like the concept behind it. I own a HTC One M8 so really used to and love the boom sound speakers. Also using headphones on this tablet is a great experience compared to my Nexus 7 and M8. Nice clean audio while using my AT M50s. Not a Nexus 9 exclusive but battery saver mode is nice too.

Love 99.9% of the Pixel :)

Man this phone is sweet. Display, sound build quality camera software all awesome. But the one thing I do not like at all is the chins on the is phone. Man they are huge. If I compare it to the Nexus 5 or 5X or the 6P these chins are like twice as big. I wonder what the heck Google was thinking when they did that. No screen protector on mine or case, the phone is a tad slippery as well. But I got that $4.99 a month insurance from Google so that should cover me...

Loving it here too, a bit wary of the battery life so far but it is far too early to draw any conclusions as Android does take a while to settle.
Really impressed with how responsive the phone is - passed it around my colleagues at work and they all commented on it.
It is also really nice to be able to sit down with a phone in my pocket without it jabbing me and being uncomfortable like the 6P was.
Agreed. Initially when the pics started leaking and everyone was freaking out about the chins I was thinking "they're not that bad"... Once in hand I was like "yeah, they're bad".
Phone is much taller than it should have been imho.
Loving everything else about it so far though.
Can't wait to get root.

Comparing to my N5X the fingerprint sensor is higher up, almost to the equivalent increase in chin size. Really feels off when using the fingerprint sensor for me.

How did you get that? When I purchased the phone, the insurance was a flat rate of $99. I went back and checked and I still don't see a $4.99/month plan. Am I looking in the wrong area?
EDIT: nevermind...I see. You're a Project Fi customer. Y'all get the month-month payments...lucky
I've had the Pixel since Friday but only really spent time with it this afternoon/evening. I also purchased the Axon7 so I ha e been testing that one out up till today. I have to say I do like the Pixel very much. I have no case of screen protector so I was hesitant to use but since I'm 90% sure I'm sending it back I took it to work. Form factor is very nice although I must admit that going from N5x to A7 to Pix I do notice the smaller screen. It's very clean though. Way better than my N5x and not to sure about A7 because I still have factory screen protector on. I can say though it feels very delicate in the hands, like I need to be careful(slippery to). I will straight up admit that if the Pixel was $500 I wouldn't even think twice, it would stay. Just don't think I can justify$730 for a phone. Not with how nice midrange phones are and the price they fetch. Plus I have 7.1.1 on my N5x along with Google Assistant. Who knows though, I still have 8 days left to decide.

$5*24 months = $120, you paid less for insurance though...
Really, the chin is no where near as bad as I thought it would be or how people say it would be.
The design is very consistent, symmetrical and balanced. The front looks like a better version of the iPhone, with the omission of the ugly home button. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the back, even though it has grown in me. If anything, the back is my gripe much more than the chin. Never noticed the bezels.
Sent from my Pixel using XDA-Developers mobile app
Just got mine yesterday, so not much time on it.
I actually think it has really good grip naked compared to other phones, but i always use a slim case.
My only gripes are bezels and some os/launcher options or lack of options. Otherwise it's a near perfect phone for my needs. Google will fix/add some of my concerns in upcoming updates
Yes price is high but it was built to compete with apple/Samsung, so its priced right. Although appl/Samsung are overpriced...hahaha
I put mine on the t-mobile promo, so i will get some credit back. Won't get the full $325 cause i change phones 1-2 times a yr. This one will probably make a full yr.
Hmm I think the chins are about the same as 5X. The 5X did have that front facing speaker on the front. If Pixel had that I think it would save it from being complained about.
yeah... to me the weirdest thing about the bottom chin is that it's just blank. Nothing there except chin -- no button, no speaker, just unused space. Every time I pick up a pixel I just wish they could have made it about 5mm shorter
I'm ok with the chin. Actually the Caseology parallax case changed the way I hold my phone so much I barely even notice (always had a pinky rest on the gigantic chin). The back of this case is amazing for grip.
The only sad thing for me and for lots of others it seems? The downward firing speaker. It sounds clear. It's soo easy to cover. Coming from a 6p and a 5x even, it's just a massive bummer. Even the 5x was aok.

Are you guys using the regular display mode or the srgb one?
In my opinion the colors in the regular mode are too punchy and the srgb is quite nice, just the whites turn quite yellowish unfortunately.
I am completely loving this phone right now. I was a bit weary of it being an HTC phone since my only experience with HTC was the HTC One and it was a TERRIBLE phone all around. The One was probably the worst phone I've ever had, so it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
Other than that, the (IMO) minimalist feel and the fact that the phone just works is making me very happy. So far that's without root or anything. If there were a way to get unlocked hotspot without root that would be icing on the cake. I probably wouldn't even root or mod anything else if I had hotspot working

Would you buy the Nexus 6P again?

So the other day I dropped my 6P right on the power button (while it was in my Speck case) and it caused it to get jammed in and unusable. Thankfully, Huawei said repair is covered by warranty, which I have a few months left of. This got me thinking, though, that if something were to happen again, would I buy this phone again?
The answer for me is absolutely. I bought my Graphite 64GB for $799 CAD, and in my Googling, I found the 128GB variant for $775 CAD on B&H. To me this is an absolute steal, and with the Pixel phones introducing iPhone-level prices, I wouldn't think again about owning another one of these. What do you guys think, would you hang on to the Nexus line as long as you can, or get something new?
I wouldn't. Using a Spigen case and keeping it in my front pocket, it has bent. Not enough to crack the screen (yet) but enough that I can see it. Especially by the power button and volume rocker. And the games I've been playing lately are PinOut and Auralux 2. Neither seem to be all that graphically intensive, but both are apparently intense enough to tax the SD810 processor and cause it to throttle from over heating. Much happier with my Pixel.
So what's the price of the Pixel XL if you wanted one of those?

I would buy a 6P with a better SoC and same design and price. I find Pixel's design ugly and boring as hell. It is also too expensive and with that price I would rather buy an iPhone. I like 6P's design and love the stereo speakers.
I just love the way the phone looks. Nice big display, front facing speakers and great low light pics. An updated processor and ois for video is all that is really needed. Wish Huawei would do a 3T with this one. With a black rhinoshield bumper, my black 6p looks sleek and stealth like...corny as that might sound.
May be future Pixel XL 2017 model.
I've only had mine for 4 days and finally had time to root tonite. I don't hate it yet.
I thought about the Pixel XL but couldn't get around the looks or the price point.
This has been my first phone ive owned for over a year and havent even thought of upgrading yet. The pixel looks like dog sh1t and the price tag is out of control. The battery dieing at random % bug is pissing me off lately, but besides that i truly love this device.
Coming from the LG G4 and Nexus 5 . I really liked and wanted a Pixel but the Price point kept me away. Found a 128gb 6p on B&H and decided to try. So Far so good. I would love to have some of the Pixel rom's features but really do not need assistant. Overall its a nice device and I would purchase again.
Yes I would and technically I did haha. I bought one in April of this year and had it up to August when the Note 7 came out. Sold it and got the N7 and had that for a month and we all know what happened there heh. Returned the Note and ended up buying another 6P. I was originally just getting it to hold me down until the Pixel XL, but once I saw what it had and it's price point, I was like "Nah".
The 6P imo is one of the best phones ever made. It was a good price, AOSP, plenty of mod support, great performance and my god the speakers?? I don't think I could get another device without front facing speakers.
Currently running it stock, unrooted on 7.1.1 and it's running problem free. Love it.

Install the Cortex ROM for the 6P. It brings the entire pixel phone experience and is probably the most stable and smoothest rom out there.
Maybe next year's 2017 Nexus comeback after Google retires the Pixel!
I'd buy an updated 6P is a heartbeat. A better CPU and OIS and it'd be perfection.

We know this may or will not happen. Huawei and Google have moved on. As long as Google is tied to a carrier the Pixel Phone will be priced very high.
Since the 6P was notorious for throttling with VR, when I came across a good deal on a 2 day old XL on Swappa I pounced on it.

Have you returned/cancelled your Pixel 2 XL or kept it?

I was just wondering how many of you guys and girls have returned or cancelled your order of the Pixel 2 XL? There are so many threads where a lot of members said that they either are returning their phone or cancelling their order based on general reception. And as I don't think we can expect any data about this topic from Google any time soon, I thought a poll would be nice to get an overview about the percentage of returns in this forum.
I live in Germany, and as the phone isn't released here yet there might be a chance for me to cancel my order if there are many returns because of screen and/or loudspeaker issues.

Kept my Panda preorder. Actually having ages to wait is turning out to be a blessing. I'm leaving it as long as I can and keeping an eye on what's going on with the US ones. If it's still looking bad in mid December, then I'll still have the option to cancel.
Interestingly, Google will be coming to my place of work on 17th November, so I'll have the opportunity to grill them!

I kept mine long enough to go to tmobile and get the 350 visa card going and then returning it. I'll wait or get a note 8 or just just stay with my current phone. All the main phones this year seem kind of disappointing.
I canceled my 2nd order two days ago and picked up a unlocked Note 8. After all the negatives with the 2XL coming out daily I figured I'd give Samsung another go. I will still keep an eye on the 2XL with a open mind. Hopefully the issues will be resolved soon because it is a beautiful phone. Good luck to those who are keeping theirs.
I'm keeping my 128 panda preorder the google reps that I spoke to are claiming that the second batch of phone will do much better screen wise I'm assuming this will delay my panda even more and that's fine with me as long as they iron out some of their kinks.

The two reps I spoke never really gave me specifics but then again I didn't even ask I just wanted to know if they knew anything about what Google plans on doing about the screen issues and should I cancel my preorder and they said they were aware and that much of the issues have been corrected on the second batch of pixels XL I then ask will my phone be apart of that second batch and they said yes

It wasn't my first choice coming from a Pixel 5" but I am liking it so far and feel at ease with the purchase. But yeah it feels like a brick in my pocket lol. My wife got a S8+ last week so that kinda swayed me back to Samsung for a bit. As for the fingerprint, I rarely if ever use it. I can still purchase a 2XL when things get resolved but for now I'm good.

The note 8 feels like a better phone than the pixel 2 does, the only reason I returned the note was you couldn't root it at the time. Once my XL is back in the mail back to google I am just getting one with the exn chip in it and staying with the note.
Cancelled order, will wait if the screen approve with future batch. Sticking to OG XL 6P replacement.
Kept. The screen blue tint doesn't bother me really at all. Most of the time I don't look at it at any other angle than dead on so seeing the blue isn't often. I think some people are just super nitpicky about things haha. So far I like this phone better than my og Pixel.
Decided to return mine this week. Have until next week to be within my 15 days. I will keep my V30. It just feels so much better size wize, wireless charging and headphone jack. When I use the Pixel I miss using the V30...just that simple.
Got my 128gb black version yesterday. I was surprised at how subtle the blue tint is in person. I barely notice it and I really have to angle it for it to show up - like nearly look at the screen directly from the side. The supposed washed out/dull colors are only obvious if you're comparing it directly to another device with higher saturation. I've especially noticed reds on the Pixel XL 2 actually look red compared to the oversaturated orangish look of the devices I compared it with (OnePlus 3T, Moto G4 Plus, iPhone 6 Plus).
With that said, I'm not sure that I'll keep it. $1000+ is a lot for a phone with display issues. Even though they're subtle, they're definitely there and I'm not sure one should just accept them. I'm not so sure about this "second batch" of phones, but maybe in a couple months these problems will be resolved.
Or maybe I'll keep it. I have time to think about it. I'll definitely use it through the weekend before making a decision.
I've had it for a day now. Great phone! Much better all around than the Oneplus2 I came from. Much better than the Note4 I had before that.
Plus, will get huge dev support. Not too many companies releasing source code any more and encouraging development.
This is my first carrier free google/nexus phone experience (the original G1 doesn't count, right?), and already - wow!!
Will be returning. Defect just popped up for my screen. I've got a grey bar that stretches across the screen below the bar is darker than above. Pretty disappointed as the software and overall hardware was damn nice on this phone.
Edit: the diagonal lines in the pictures are from the camera, not actual visible on phone.
Keeping mine. I love it. No issues except for the blue tint. The tint is mildly annoying at best. Anyway, if they somehow fix that, or actually end up using different screen hardware, I can always RMA it for a new one at that time.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA Labs
Keeping mine, no issues and have to tilt to get it to give the light blue tint not a deal breaker to me. Really a work horse and smooth as silk IMO. Not into vivid colors that much, but might try them out if they do a software update that give it just to see what is all the fuss over vivid color.
Cancelled my order. Might just get the smaller pixel 2 instead.
My Oneplus 5 is awesome but stuttery compared to anything from Google. WiFi is awful too.
What else to get?
Dear All,
I thought about cancelling the order but what other phone would I want? Nothing. Google has acknowledged the bugs and will fix in upcoming update. My order won't arrive till end of November which gives Google time to iron out the bugs. The blue colour shift they can't fix with software but would it really deter your overall user experience? Time will tell...

I would trade my Pixel XL in heartbeat for a phone that came out years ago.

My one regret, well two actually, as an Android fanatic, was selling my Nexus 5. Not only did it unlock and root in what seemed like 10 seconds, but the size being small enough for your pocket and a screen that somehow looked massive. I had the logic an even better device would soon be on the horizon. Those being the 5x and 6p, both being a letdown, but the worst Nexus device is still better than anything Samsung releases.
Even though I'm one of the unfortunate Verizon pixel users, this is the second best phone I have owned, and that is from a long list of phones. I'm fine with not having root, but I do miss ROM customization.
Pre emptive apologize just in case I posted this in the wrong place or annoyed anyone with my nostalgic rambling, but I needed this off my chest.
Any former Nexus 5 users care to weigh in?
I really liked the Nexus 5 but it wasn't perfect. I had GPS trouble and frame cracking issues. One even broke somehow and wouldn't see a SIM anymore. As I get older I really like bigger screens for use without glasses now.
Size and feel in hand was perfect, I love that soft touch plastic like it had, like a lot of blackberrys had. Only other that came close in that department for me was the 3GS.
Was and still is amazing community developer support, which is impressive. Doesn't seem like the pixels are enjoying that.
Nexus 5 was an incredible device
**you mean the nexus 6?
Just kidding, but to me, that was the epitome of a premium smartphone. I would trade my phone in a second for a flawless N6

But what about the phone of which we don't speak of?
....Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I loved it when it dropped, but it did not age well at all.
I'm one of the few that was let down by the N5 (and I've posted this before). Yes, it could be unlocked and rooted in minutes (although I'm not sure the Pixel really takes a significantly greater enough time to make an issue out of it), but the phone felt flimsy and poorly made. The design was unspectacular, the IPS screen uninspiring, and the performance underwhelming (let's just not mention the camera.)
At the same time as the N5's release was the best Nexus phone released by Google that wasn't a Nexus... The original Moto X. What's most interesting about that phone is the extent to which its feature set went on to influence and set the agenda for future Nexus and Pixel hardware (dedicated language processing chips) and software in general, and Google Assistant in particular; in contrast, the N5 did nothing of the sort. Had El goog folded the Moto X directly into the Nexus/Pixel programme (the N6 being an entirely wasted opportunity) I'm quite sure the N5 would have only one talking point left for it: the last standard Nexus demonstrating all that was wrong with the programme.

GPS wasn't the best for sure. I did Lyft at the time and got lost constantly. The community for it was insanely good, you are dead right.

Lmao
I loved the Nexus 6, only problem was, for me at least, to fragile. But then I shouldn't have accidentally sat on it

I'd trade a flawless N6 for your Pixel XL. That was my previous phone. Got it late in the game and always kept in unicorn beattle case. The phone is def in basically new shape and no damage even in the slightest. PM me if you're serious.

If you think the 6 was fragile you should see the 6P. I always made fun of my brothers phone as he had the 6P and it was an extremely brittle phone.
My 6 is a tank and still is.

Actually it was the 6p. I was walking when I typed that
nexus 5? lol
nexus 5 had so bad camera and battery life . I replaced it second day for galaxy s5
Google improved camera from 5X/6P but battery was still **** which got fix when they released Pixel XL
I just found a guy selling 6 for 100 off letgo. Yay!!!!
That's crazy man, mine was flawless
I can't complain about the PXL since Google replaced my 6P for free, but I would love to have some Oreo ROM love in it, I'm still hopeful they'll surface soon and have my finger on Paypal for that.
Don't be mistaken, the N6P was a beast of a phone. Dual front facing speakers, an almost perfect camera, and enough storage/memory to keep every finger swipe accurate. What was there not to love?
Oh yeah, the unlimited free WiFi hotspot I miss from my .... Samsung Galaxy Nexus (R.I.P). Hmm, now that I think of it, did I lose that because I left Verizon's unlimited data plan and switched to Metropcs's or because I upgraded past Nougat?
Now with the Pixel XL, I've actually only run into one. single. problem. It never ran Marshmallow. And if you care to know why, it's simply because the best mods for the Android version of GTA San Andreas are ONLY stable on Marshmallow.
Truth be told, the Pixel XL is ALOT better than I'd thought it would be and because of that... It's boring to me because I am a flashaholic with nothing to flash.
I loved my Nexus 5 but it had it issues. I wouldn't ever go back to that small of a phone lol I got 2 Nexus 5s that had Motherboard issues and would stop displaying anything on the screen, even after replacing parts including the screen. I love my Nexus 6 and would go back to that if my pixel XL died. The pixel XL is the first time I am content with having a locked down device.
