Hey friends,
I am facing this problem while making calls that as soon as I press call button or receive button(while taking call) the screen turns off n stay that way till the call ends.
I have tried pressing all hardware buttons,even moved the dvp awayfrom me n into direct light but to no avial.though it did turn on once or twice out of twenty times.
Did anyone else experience this? Any suggestions are welcome..

Do you have a screen protector or case that is obscuring the light sensor or proximity sensor? My first guess is that something is obscuring one or both, because during a call the screen being off is a feature.

i know about this feature n still have that plastic skin on the screen i'll remove it n check again don't think it d block light but then wats the harm?

The screen stays black during a call and this happens ramdomly. I have a dell venue pro a t mobile phone but it is a pre release so it works on att 3g and all. I have switched the sd card with no improvement. I have ordered a transender 32 gb sd that I haven't received yet. The firmware version 2250.1400.7004.025 hardware is 112.576.2.0 radio soft 2.2.50.14 radio hard 8250. I have been unable to get any of the hardware keys to hang up the phone which if I get voicemail or something means I have to power the phone down to get the dang thing to hang up. Sometimes it works fine but I cant find a commonality software or hardware that causes this. It happens right out of the box so even after a software reset it can happen. Is there any solution for this issue?
I can't understand why the button on top doesn't hang it up.

wow just got a replacement phone today and im having this problem, As soon as I go to make a call the screen goes black and cant do anything on screen during the call, so i cant enter my password when checking voicemail
I think it's related to the proximity sensor. When you put the phone close to your head, the screen switches off. When you move it away, it will switch on - most of the time .
If it stays black, have you tried tapping the power button on the top of the phone? It switches the screen on without disconnecting your call.
A coworker got a replacement the other day(they send a refurb) phone and it had the same problem. Had to go through Twitter to get Dell to send him a new retail phone since they had send him 3 refurbs prior and they all had different issues.
This is just a general statement regarding phone proximity sensors. I have had multiple phones made by different manufactures that experience this to some degree (including the Venue Pro). One thing that I have noticed is that if the phone goes from your face directly into a bright light (outside is most common) it will keep the screen shut off but if the sensor is somewhat shaded it will resume normal function.
I got the same problem too and while it may be a proximity sensor problem, it is not controllable on the user's end. Unless the phone call disconnects magically, a battery pull is necessary.
I'm gonna be on my third one soon and I hope that i won't face the same problem.

Yes i recently got a new refurbed phone and this problem has arised. Complained to Dell and they are going to send me a Brand new DVP. I see a lot of people having this same issue with the refurbs. Currently Dell is out of new DVP due to them upgraing the firmware, so I have to deal with a broke phone till the end of August. Talk about a dissatisfied customer. Im thinking about selling this brand new unit when I get it, hopefully Toshiba has their device out by then
This is a Proximity Sensor issue. You can fix it though in the EM app. You can adjust the sensor readings and the phone will function like normal. Let me know if you need the values or a step by step!

A step by step would be awesome. I like being able to see the screen during a call.
1) Get the EM app, if you dont have it dial ##634# into the dialer
2) Get into the advanced menu by double tapping the black area and typing in "qwertyuiop"
3) Select "RD test", now enter *#6336# in the box that pops up.
4) Select "Sensors", and the "Proximity Sensor Config"
5) Set the following to these:
LED strength - 1
Diode select - 2
Pulse Count - 43
6) Hit set and then you are good to go!
I have noticed that one of my DVP's needs to have this put in again everytime I reboot the phone, the other saves it. Just an FYI for ya!
I get to step 3 and when i clock on RD test, I am prompted with a white box with blue trim and an X at the top right. can you advise on how to proceed?

When I dial *#634# it says thic code is not supported.
What does that mean?

I dont know, you could just have a defective phone. I know thats hard to believe that from Dell.....
Just wanna ask if there is any temporary fix to the proximity sensor of nexus 4.
During calls the screen doesn't turn off when placed close to the face.
I didn't get the chance to test it on stock 4.2 because when i turned my phone on it updated first to 4.2.1. Ever since then it has had proximity sensor not working during calls.
And i have never had any screen protectors on the screen.
Tried many custom ROMS as well but no difference at all.

how about kernals could be a bug in franco.
return it to 100% stock make sure its still doing it under those conditions then if it is contact Google and ask for an RMA this is probably your best course of action. if it has been like this since you pulled it out of the box then contact google right now and tell them the proxmity sensor is clearly broken

BTW as for screen protectors, unless you have a giant bubble or crap on your protector or underneath in the adhesive layer, the proximity sensor should perform fine. Before you blame my screen protector, I downloaded a proximity sensor app to show the readout. The screen protector with no cutout is fine. It's not optimal to have one like that, but the proximity sensor works fine.

Using stock. No issues on the sensor. Turns off on calls and turns on when I remove from the face. Have a spigen protector on with a cutout for it

I was on stock 2 weeks ago when I started noticing it.
I am on cm now as well and its very much messed up.

There is.
I've installed and tested.
According to the app results, The proximity sensor seems to know when my hand is on it and when its off it. The value changes from 1.0 to 2.0
It just won't work on phone calls.

It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.
Sensor tests were made and the proximity sensor picks up when my thumb is placed on it.
Problem is on phone calls alone. Right from stock ROM to CM, PA, Xylon, AOKP, almost all of the ROMs.

Mine is stock and during calls it usually goes to my settings menu and changes my clock setting. When I get off the phone, screen is blank and I hit power button to end call. Still annoying at times when the clock changes.
any luck with finding a fix for the proximity sensor? Mine never works when I'm in a phone call. I have to either wait for the call to end or reset the phone by holding the power button to end the call.

I think it's a bug and not a hardware issue. Perhaps one of the other reason for having a new factory image soon.

Yes I think the fact that the app testing showed the sensor working so it points to software. Something is missing when the phone is in a call its not connecting to turn off. I thing Jellybean was flawed in many ways. My drop down brightness slider doesn't work for me nor auto brightness its OK for me cause I don't use either but still makes me mad.

While I'm in a call - the proximity sensor seems to work, as the screen goes dark... but at the end of the call when removing the phone away from my face, the screen does not come back on - making it impossible to hang up on the call (unless the caller on the other end hangs up first). It also makes it difficult to impossible to switch to and from speakerphone in the middle of a call.
Pushing the power button when this happens doesn't wake the screen either... sometimes it flashes but then goes black again. It doesn't happen on every call... maybe 75% of the time it does happen though. I've installed the proximity sensor app and it seems to recognize "covered" and "uncovered" states correctly when I cover the sensor at the top left corner of the phone while not in a call... so I'm thinking this is actually a software issue with the sensor and not a hardware issue. Drives me nuts though.
I've set "accessibility settings" to have the power button hang up calls as a temporary workaround... we'll see how that works.

Having the exact same issue here too on stock ROM.
Good idea on the accessibility settings! Will work until/if they fix it..
Also no screen protector.
I had the opposite problem to this where my screen would stay off during a call and I have to force restart to regain control.
Turns out it was the rubbish screen protector causing the issue. This was quickly fixed by cutting the screen protector so that the sensor was uncovered.

It was the same fix for mine when I first got my bse it worked fine for about a week but then over time it got worse. It was the screen protector just that lil bit worth of it wear caused enough blockage of the sensor. I got some new bse's and they now have a cutout for the proximity sensor and are screen optimized.

I had a problem with a rooted nexus 4 device running cm10.1 rom and faux kernal. when i make a call the screen goes black and has no response at all but i can hear the call through the ear piece. i cannot get the screen to come on at all during a call, i have since done a factory reset installed paranoid android and wiped dalvik cache but still the problem persists. Any help??
the screen protector on your phone is too thick, and it is causing the proximity sensor on your phone to detect it as if it were the side of your face. That's why your screen goes black.

Just use a hole puncher and make a cutout for your screen protector.
The easiest thing to do would be to cut a hole on your screen protector around the proximity sensor. Or just remove it altogether.

When I lay down on my back to talk on the phone, the screen shuts off like it's supposed to but I can't (easily) turn the screen back on, even when I hit the power button. Everything is fine when I'm on my feet or sitting down, though. I'm fairly certain my Galaxy Nexus used to do the same thing.
It sounds like the dumbest thing in the world, but maybe it has something to do with the way you, yourself, are positioned when you're on the phone. If you do lay down while on the phone, see if anything changes when you stand/sit up.
Theres an app on the market to test what your proximity sensor is doing, I do not remember the name but its easily found. I had the same problem with the first version of the xtreme guard screen protectors. There was no cutout for the proximity sensor and it thought it was against something the entire time. The screen would blank out when I received a call and only come back on if the person on the other end of the conversation hung up first. Find the test app on the market, its an easy free way of seeing if that is your problem. BTW if you decide to cut out your screen guard do not do it with it on the phone, you may leave a nice scratch in the screen.

I had the same issue with my clear screen protector, I had to take an initiative by manually cutting around the sensors to expose them and the issue was gone.
Maybe drilling holes & cutting protectors should be moved to the Ace Hardware Forum
After reading all the wise replies, I installed Smart Screen On, ver 1.6, on my Nexus 4. (Play Store, Google Play or whatever silly name they use now). Then I enabled Light Turn On and changed LG's stupid sensitivity of 50 lux to 218 lux. In "Basic" I enabled "smart screen on" and "start on boot". Then rebooted.
Lo & Behold : The device became a normally functioning cell phone. No blank screens when making or receiving calls.
The app also contains various gimmicks concerning hand gestures, finger swiping etc. but being an atheist, I ignored them lest somebody around might think I'm praying for Almighty God to destroy stupidity. But if you're onto those cheap gimmicks, your 1 $ investment in the app will also give you this perverted satisfaction.

This past summer I had my Nexus 4 LCD and digitizer replaced, after which the proximity sensor stopped working. I installed the Proximity Screen Off app as a workaround to keep the screen alive during phone calls. Ever since I upgraded to Android L yesterday, this fix no longer seems to work. Is there anything that I can do besides sending the unit in for repair? I lack the tools to take apart the phone.
This problem is rather crippling as I cannot use the dialer or speakerphone during phone calls, or even hang up when the screen is off.
I have this exact same issue, and was also hoping to find a fix. Any ideas?

Thank you. I have done this, for the time being, as it's difficult to end calls, otherwise. However, not being able to use the keypad whilst in call is posing to be an issue. Prior to the update and using 'Proximity Screen Off' app, I was able to catch the 'Home' button when pressing the power button, which allowed me to use the phone screen whilst in a call. With the new update, I am unable to do this.
I have come across a Disassembly Video (watch?v=AZDAIgwbXk4), but I'm not sure how confident I feel taking my phone apart.
The screen on my Nexus 4 has previously been replaced. When it was replaced, I'm fairly sure the Proximity Sensor did work, but then I dropped it on wooden flooring, and after that it no longer worked. It was a seemingly short drop, but this has somehow damaged the sensor. I'm not sure if the rubber cover (as shown in the video) has just moved out of place, or if it is completely broken. The light sensor works fine, in any case.

I thought I had fixed it, but unfortunately the fix was short-lived. I discovered that I'm missing the gasket covering the proximity and light sensor, and this is causing an issue.
Anyone have any workable alternatives?
My nexus 4 Lollipop 5.1 Seems to have a problem when I make a call. I hit the phone symbol, select the number I want to call from my requent call list. I hit the dial button and make the call........ The problem comes when I go to end the call the screen goes black such that I can end the call. I just have a black screen........
Does anyone out there have any idea whats happening and what the fix may be?

The screen is supposed to go black when you make a call--or, rather, when you place the phone to your ear. There is a "proximity detector" along the top edge of the screen, and it detects your ear when your ear gets close. The phone then turns off the screen sensors so that your ear or your cheek doesn't push any buttons while you are talking, and turns off the screen illumination for aesthetic reasons. However, the proximity detector is supposed to cause the screen to turn back on when you remove the phone from your ear. That isn't happening for you. When it didn't happen for me, I took it to the shop. The tech said the proximity detector was broken, and ordered a new one. But replacing the proximity detector didn't help. He finally disabled the sensor so that proximity was never detected. that worked.
This story does not have a happy ending for me. The phone worked for a couple of days. Then I tried to reboot, and it went in to a boot loop. None of the standard cures for a boot loop is helping me. I doubt if the two problems are connected.

Then you must likely have a faulty proximity sensor, as stated previously.
Download an app, like AndroSensor, and see what the output for the proximity sensor reads. When nothing is covering the sensor (top left corner) it should read 5 cm/2 inch, or something similar. If it reads 0, it's busted...

I did as you suggested and the results say 2" uncovered 0 when covered
Hmm... The plot thickens...
That means you have a working proximity sensor. No idea what it could be then.

I have the same issue. In my case, the proximity sensor may have been broken or blocked by dust.
My "temporary" solution is using the power button to disconnect calls. While using a Bluetooth headset, the screen can be turned on. I hope there is a better solution.
